Extreme and b/g router

Hi,
Can I use my current Netgear b/g DSL modem-router to provide a b/g network and connect a new Airport Extreme via ethernet to supply an n network. (Obviously separate SSID and channnel)
If so, how would the NAT / DHCP settings look?
Thanks for any help,
Matt

Yes you can do that.
You would configure the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to act as a bridge and not distribute IP addresses.

I have an AirPort Extreme and a linksys router. What is the best way to get 6-8 wired connections with ac speeds?
    Appreciate your assistance.

The answer depends on whether the AirPort Extreme is your main router....or...the Linksys device is your main router.
In either case, the two devices must connect together using a wired Ethernet connection using CAT5e or CAT6 cabling.
Any version of the AirPort Extreme produced within the last 5 years will have Gigabit Ethernet ports. In order to get the same speeds from the Linksys router, it will also need to be Gigabit Ethernet capable.
If you need additional Ethernet ports, you will need to add a Gigabit Ethernet switch to either the AirPort Extreme or Linksys router.
It is assumed that your other devices connecting to the AirPort Extreme and Linksys router will also have Gigabit Ethernet capability.
Not sure why you mention "ac" speeds in your post. This relates to wireless connections, not wired.

  • Airport extreme and a second router

I have an airport extreme upstairs in my office with attached NAS drives. Downstairs in the family room I have 3 devices that need to be networked (tivo HD, Xbox & sling). It is near impossible to run any CAT-5 cable from the upstairs AE to the downstairs devices so I am planning on using a network powerline adapter (Netgear model xe102g) to make the connection. Once I have the network powerline connection downstairs in the family room I need a router/switch to connect the 3 devices. I have an old D-link wireless router (model DI-524) with 1 WAN port and 4 LAN ports. I do not need the wireless connection (although it wouldn't hurt to have) all I really need is for this D-Link router to act like a switch. These are my questions: Do I need to disable DHCP on the downstairs D-Link router? If so, will each device have its own IP address or will I have to assign them manually? Do I connect the receiving powerline adapter into the WAN or LAN port of the D-Link?
Also, off the subject - how do I determine the IP address of my laptop and of the USB external Hard Drive I have connected to my AE?
    Thanks

Do I need to disable DHCP on the downstairs D-Link router?
    Yes
If so, will each device have its own IP address or will I have to assign them manually?
They will all get IP address from the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).
Do I connect the receiving powerline adapter into the WAN or LAN port of the D-Link?
    Probably LAN port.

  • What are the differences between aiport extreme and linksys wireless router

We currently have an apple macbook connecting to the internet via a linksys router. We are considering an airport extreme wireless router, we are considering the cost. What are the advantages of purchasing an Airport Extreme router.... ??? Currently my wireless access appears to be more than adequate.

Besides Bob Timmons' comments, an AirPort Extreme supports these things, which your Linksys router may or may not support:
    - A USB-connected networked disk drive
    - A USB-connected printer that can be shared by all computers on your network
    - MobileMe access to your local resources from outside your local network
    - Configuration via a dedicated program, rather than via a browser interface
If none of these interests you or if any that interest you are already offered by your current router, and if you're happy with your Linksys router, then I'd keep the Linksys router.

  • I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use?

I have an airport extreme and express, if I use the extreme as a base station connected to my old router can I use the express to extend the signal while also creating a new network that only I can use? Essentially having two wifi connection off the same network? If so how do I set this up?

Extending using a wireless connection always results in a performance compromise.
If the Express is going to extend using a wireless connection, then the Express will need to be located about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area where you need more wireless coverage. The more that you have line-of-sight between the Extreme and Express, the better the network will operate.
Remember......the Express can only "extend" the quality and signal speed that it receives, so it needs to be located where it can get a very good signal from the Extreme. Although Apple cleverly uses the term "extend", a more accurate term for the Express would be "repeater".
If the Express will extend by connecting to the Extreme using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection......highly recommended for best performance.....then the Express can be located exactly where you need more wireless coverage. There is no signal loss at all through the Ethernet cable, so the Express gets a full speed signal no matter where it might be located.
Post back to let us know which way to you want to go.

  • Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections

Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express?  I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."
For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb.
In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.
Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on optimal base station placement.

  • Will adding AirPort Extreme to my fios router improve my speed and distance to led tv.. The tv keeps dropping network and 50% of the time it tells me my broadband is too slow. I have upgraded to fios faster internet speed.

Will adding AirPort Extreme to my Fios router improve reception on tv located about 50 feet away..have new top of the line samsung smart tv and it drops signal every other day. When trying to watch netflix or amazon it transmits in SD only says bandwidth is not high enough for Hd. My ipad laptops and iphone work fine in this room. Any help will be appreciated or am I better off with a booster.

The AirPort Extreme will not be able to wirelessly "boost" or "repeat" the wireless signal from the Fios router, since It will only work with another Apple router for that feature.
So, if you plan to extend or repeat the FIos wireless signal, you should use a product by the same manufacturer as the Fios router....or possibly a "universal" repeater from a company like Netgear.
Make sure that you understand the store's return policy before you buy any kind of extender or repeater.....since you cannot know if the product will help until you try it out in your home.
The TV really needs a wired Ethernet connection from the Fios router if at all possible.

  • AirMac Extreme and Airport Express not working with Netgear N Router?

I've been using an AirMac Extreme (old model) as a wireless router, and Airport Express for it's airtunes functionality (conected to my Hi-Fi).
These used to work fine, and both would show up in my Airport Utility on my Macs.
I've now just upgraded to a 50MG broadband contract, and the engineer gave me a Network router as my old AirMac Extreme couldn't handle that bandwidth.
When I connected my AirMac Extreme to my Netgear router I then got conflicts, sometimes it wouldn't show up, and it really slowed down my wireless signal. As a result the contractor for my broadband recommended I disconnect my Air Mac Extreme from the router. Speeds went up for the internet, but now I can't get my airtunes to work.
What I want to know is can I just use my Netgear to transmit the broadband signal so I get maximum internet speeds, but then have my AirMac Extreme and Airport Express connected so that I can still listen to my itunes wirelessly?
Ideally I'd like this to all be set up so that I could be conected to the internet through the Netgear wirelessly and listen to my itunes through the Airport Express at the same time.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I am sorry that I don't have a definitive answer but I also have Windows computers and I have "inherited" some older Apple devices from my son and am trying to learn about them so in addition to searching this group,  I "Googled" "1st generation airport express" and it listed many specific posts in this group - I read them all and they might answer your question - good luck

  • I am running an older airport extreme v7.6.4wireless router with a new netgear rn104 server and cant get the server to show in the MacPro hardware or the on the wireless router

How do I adjust the settings to get this Netgear server to show and use the Airport Extreme and show up on the hardware of the McPro?

The server is never going to show on the airport extreme.. it is not wireless.. unless you happen to run v5 airport utility. Most are running v6.
Is the Netgear setup for dhcp .. the display on the front of the netgear should be showing its IP address.
    What is it??
What IP is your Mac getting?
I presume both are plugged into the AE by ethernet.. if not please do so now.
To open anything but Apple products like AE you open the IP in the browser.. simply type that IP on the front screen of the NAS into your browser. If it doesn't connect you have the setup wrong and something is not using DHCP.. in that case tell me exactly what you are getting.

  • Cisco router RVS4000 with Airport extrem and Time capsule.

Problem droping connection to internet when is Time capsule in extended wifi mode. When I turn off wifi on time capsule Airport extreme work fine.
Airport extreme and Time capsule is conected via ETH.
    Any idea ?
    Thaks

If you use ethernet to connect the AE and TC .. you must NOT extend wifi.. you use Create a wireless network. And setup with same name and security. You are using roaming network.. not extended wireless.. if you want to use extended wireless no ethernet

  • How do I use my airport extreme with my FIOS router?

How do I use my AirPort Extreme base station with my FIOS Router to extend my network?  I have hard disks connected to my AirPort Extreme and would lik to access them.

Probably can't answer all your questions - but.... I use a Linksys (wired and wireless) router as my primary entry point for FIOS. I use a Time Capsule and an Airport Express as a common wireless connection. So I have two visibile wireless networks and use them both depending on where I am in the house. Both the TC and AEx can be seen either wirelessly or wired from the entire network. Note - the Linksys provides all the DHCP - you set the apple routers as "bridge mode."

  • How to for HP CP1525nw Apple AirPrint and Netgear WNDR3700 router

How to setup AirPrint on an iPhone & iPad with a HP CP1525nw and Netgear WNDR3700 router
    Date written:  April 17, 2011
I did this twice. It took 2 days the first time and 3 hours the second time.
    Equipment used:
    iPhone 4 on AT&T
    iPad 2 on Verizon
    HP LaserJet CP1525nw color laser
Netgear  N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNR3700 v2
Abstract: Upgrade Apple products software, upgrade router firmware, upgrade HP Printer firmware and installer. In that order. Reboot a lot. Test as you go.
APPLE - Upgrade iTunes to the latest version  10.2.1.1 Released around mid April, 2011.
This will Upgrade iPhone 4 to version 4.3.2 (AT&T) Check in Settings under About.
This will Upgrade iPad 2 to version 4.3.2 (Verizon) Check in Settings under About.
NETGEAR - Upgrade the Netgear 3700 router from version 1.0.0.6 to version 1.0.0.8 using the built in webpage to check for updates. The router will download and install the updates. This will also update the built in Web setup GUI from 1.0.0.56 to 1.0.0.67.  Power off and on the router.  To see your version, check Status under Maintenance
Now is a good time to setup Wireless security in the router. Set to WPA PSK (TKIP) + WPA2-PSK (AES). Uncheck Enable Wireless Isolation.
Enter a password for both bands 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz, I used the same for both. (the iPad can use the 5 GHz WiFi band but not for printing {?} so use 2.4 GHz when you print.) You should give them different SSID names, like NETHOME and NETHOME-5. These will show up on your wireless devices (like the iPad but not iPhone)
Make sure your computer, iPhone and iPad can connect to the internet before you go on.
HP PRINTER – Go to HP’s website and down load the latest Installer and firmware for the CP1525nw.
    Printer webpage
This is the webpage but you can just search for CP1525nw at the HP website.
Select your Operating System, such as Win 7 32 bit. And look at the list of downloads that appear below.  Under Drivers (2), you want to download the HP LaserJet Full Feature Software and Driver. It says it is version 2.0 The Installer you will use is version 3.0.3.5253 as you will see.  The Installer on the CD is much older (1.4).
Now under Firmware (1)  download the newest firmware utility for the printer.  HP LaserJet Firmware Update Utility.  The file name is  CP1525_Series_FW_Update-20101125.exe [1/1, 6.87M]
Note the date is 20101125. My Printer had 20100430. These are the firmware version numbers.
So 2 programs from HP. One is the Installer and the other is the Firmware Updater. You can just click on the HP Full Feature Installer to run it. No CD needed anymore. You have to get the printer working on the USB port next, and then you can update the firmware in the printer.
You should uninstall any old drivers if it asks you. You are going to uninstall and reinstall 2 or more times. Uninstall old stuff, install new USB drivers from the new download, uninstall USB drivers, and install Wireless drivers.  But first get the USB working and printing. Print Config from the printer control menu to see your firmware version…. Reports/Config Report. Look at Firmware Date.
Now you can double click the 2nd HP program to upgrade the Printer firmware.  The file is called CP1525_Series_FW_Update-20101125.exe  This will upgrade the firmware over the USB port. When it is done you will get a yellow Happy Face. You can print Config Report from the printer controls to see the firmware version… 20101125.
Power off/on Printer.  Turn off cell phones, go into Airplane mode on the iPhone and iPad. You can turn on the iPhone and iPad WiFi but leave the 3G phone stuff off. This seems to be important, I think some of the “not found” problems are RF interference with the WiFi.
Run HP Installer again. Uninstall the USB driver and then run it again to install the printer as a Wireless Device. You will need to pick the router and enter the password so the printer can log on to the router.
Once you reboot the printer, check for the blue light on the front. Make sure the Wireless is turned on in the Printer Wireless settings.
Your iPad and iPhone will go through the Router and back out to the Printer to print. Uninstall Print n Share, Print Pro and other printing helpers.  (for now) Try printing now.  It doesn’t work with Notes, so try printing in Safari with the BoxArrow icon.
The first time you print, you should see the Printer in list, but I had to get out of the app and get back in to Print the first time. After that is works with the CP1525nw without picking the printer again. You will see a big print button.
We so excited…. AirPrint works.  (Needs some printer settings…landscape?)
Disclaimer – I don’t work for Apple, HP, Netgear, AT&T or Verizon. I work for free…  I would be willing to beta test for them, they need help.

My question is if its possible for the N devices to still use N network while the G devices not demoting the whole wireless network to G?
Yes. To do so, you would need to connect the Netgear to the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) by Ethernet, and then, reconfigure it as a bridge (disable both its NAT & DHCP functions).
In this configuration, the AEBSn & AXn can provide the 802.11n network and the Netgear can provide the 802.11g network.

  • New Airport Extreme and iPhone Issues

I've had the networking day from ****. I previously had a 3rd Gen Time Capsule at our restaurant, connected to a Cisco 26port gigabit POE switch and Comcast digital voice and internet. Over the past few days, employees have reported trouble accessing the the Wifi network. After several restarts and firmware upgrades (including the dreaded "firmware problem" to fine update), nothing worked. I changed channels, back to auto, back to specific channels, back to auto. Made open guest networks. Nothing worked consistently. My iPhone might connect and my friend's might not. Nor his laptop consistently. Our Axis network cameras might take a bit extra time to connect. All quite random and quite frustrating.
So I swap out an older Airport Extreme (4th gen I believe) using the same configuration as the TC (Time Capsule). It works fine, except for the last port not working as expected. No matter, I plug the mac mini into the Cisco switch and off we go. Nevertheless, I'm still told we are suffering random Wifi issues. So I buy a brand new AE (5th gen) today to replace that one. Should work like a charm I thought. Right....
Several hours later, I finally have the new AE working, but only after doing several hard resets/factory restores, the works. For some reason, the mac mini could not successfully update any of the connected AEs - whether connected directly into the same AE, or if the Mini was connected to the switch. Nothing worked. Every time I tried to update the AE, it would hang and force me to unplug and plug it back in. It would also never save setting changes. I finally resorted to a friend's macbook to be able to restore it successfully. And once that worked, the mini was able to update the AE flawlessly. Our Point of Sales (POS) machines connect fine, our cameras connect fine, wifi printer connects, and the mini connects, and everything has internet.
Except my iPhone 5. Of course. It gets a signal fine (full bars). It gets an IP address. But I can't surf the web. Or download email. Or iMessages. Anything. No internet access. I try hard restarts on my iphone. I try assigning IP addresses by MAC address. I try resetting the AE. I try renaming the WiFi name. Nothing. I can make a guest network that works (on a different IP table, btw - 172, not 192.) But other than that, no access. Grrrr.
So I have a "working" AE router where some devices successfully connect (through wifi and ethernet) and some dont' (wifi iPhone). My iPhone connects fine to my home TC. So shouldn't be anything to do with that. But I'm at a loss. I'm going to go back and restore everything and power cycle everything tonight or tomorrow night. I don't know if that will help, but it's worth a try. Lord knows it feels like I've tried everything else.
Anyone have any good ideas of where to start besides voodoo dolls and baseball bats?

I took mine back, because I was having these very same issues. We use contivity too. I was able to connect only to one of three of the servers we manage (in Europe). I couldn't connect to the servers in Asia or here in the USA.
Replaced the Airport Extreme with my trusty old d-link 624, and no issues connecting to any of the three hubs.
Otherwise, I liked the Airport Extreme, and I'll consider buying it again when and if they address this VPN issue. I work at home so its obviously a "deal breaker" for me.

  • How to setup a network with a time capsule, airport extreme and an airport express?

    Hello.
First I want to make it clear all my knowledge off wireless networks is going on forums on the internet, before a couple of months ago I didn't realize wireless networking was so intricate so forgive my lack of experience.
I just bought a time capsule (today, 4th generation), I have an airport extreme bought in January 2011 (they just got refreshed so mine is now one generation old) and the same with my airport express (bought in January).
I originally bought the airport extreme and setup a wireless network using the dual band setup.  I have no issues with the 5ghz network and most of my devices run on wireless n so I had no issues with them.  my only two wireless devices that can not use the 5ghz network is my iPhone 4's which use wireless n but it has to use the 2.4ghz signal.  Problem is in my apartment I am bombarded with other peoples 2.4ghz networks so my signal is terrible 10-15 feet from the airport extreme.  Near my extreme I am getting signal ranges around 15mb to 20 mb.  When Im about 15 minutes away in my bedroom (so one wall in between) my signal plummets to 1-2 mb. sometimes as low as 0.17mb which is not good.  I got the airport express to extend my range and placed it in my bedroom. .  After setting up the airport express the signal still was terrible.  I researched and realized that if the signal strength ***** then the airport express cant boost the signal as much which makes sense in hind sight.  I then researched setting up a roaming network or a WDS network.  Per research a WDS network was not recommended b/c I was not using a wireless g network.  I attempted to create a roaming network and then realized that you can not use an airport express in a roaming network.  This has led me to now buy a time capsule.
First, in my setup do I or should I have the time capsule as the primary?  I believe its more powerful than the airport extreme but Im not sure if that matters in a network that is distributing wifi from ethernet (thats how I am connected the extreme and the time capsule)
    so can I do
cable modem ETHERNET  Airport extreme(in the living room where its always been and works great in that immediate area) (3rd generation)  ETHERNET Time Capsule(in the bedroom where I usually get poor signal) (4th gen)  and then an airport express connecting to the 2.4ghz signal in the bedroom where the time capsule also is EXTENDING the wireless range?
or should it be the time capsule first bc its more powerful?
I tried setting up this setup and everything is green but I don't know if what I am doing is actually working on full cylinders b/c I am confused on some aspects.  mainly  on the airport extreme which is the primary device I have under the wireless tab selected create a wireless network and on the time capsule it also is on create a wireless network with the network name being exactly the same.  Should it be changed to extend a wireless network? and then bridge mode?  Should I have different channels for the different devices that are on 2.4ghz?
I am open to hear ANY suggestions, or ideas to improve my setup.  PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!, lol  its been 5 long months of poor internet in my bedroom where my wife has her setup with a roku box and wifi tv (I have those hardwired for now) but mainly for her iPad and iPhone b/c its so bad sometimes she has to turn wifi off and use 3G.  I have same issue in my bathroom, sometimes Im getting decent signal and sometimes its so bad I can't open the link on an RSS feed in safari which I have to assume doesn't require that much bandwith?
I have no wireless g devices.  The only device I need 2.4ghz for is my iPhone 4's but they both use n also.  All my other deivices connect on 5ghz and my 5ghz network is decent, a lot better than the 2.4ghz network atleast.

You wrote so much that I find it hard to address all your concerns.  However, here are some thoughts:
    1) I'd configure the Time Capsule as the "main" router, connected directly to your cable modem.  Configure it to "create a wireless network" and to "Allow this network to be extended".  Configure the other devices to "Extend a wireless network".
    2) Put any device that's extending the network half way between the main router and the wireless clients.  If the signal from the main router is weak at the cllient's location, then the extending device will also receive a weak signal.
