Extreme/Express Questions

I have encountered several interesting issues. I have an Airport Extreme dual band
in my basement, and an Express (n) extending my network two floors up. I set it up
this way to provide better connectivity to my g devices that are also two floors up.
I have my new iMAC in the same room as the g devices and the Express. I also use the Express to stream itunes from my iMAC to my stereo. Both Airport devices are set to default values concerning n/g/frquency etc. I left them "as is" because the guys in the Apple store told me doing so would work best for my configuration.
Here is the issue, this morning I had my PC laptop (n) 1 floor up from the Extreme
(n) connecting to the internet at 17-18 Mbps (speedtest.net). My iMAC 2 floors up
would only connect at 4-5 Mbps. No other devices were powered on at that time (g
devices were off). I thought this was odd, so unplugged the Express. Speed tests on
my iMAC then produced an 8-9 Mbps connection. I plugged the Express back in and the
speeds decreased to 4-5 Mbps. I changed the Express to join the network rather than
extend and the speeds on the iMAC increased to 8-9 Mpbs again.
First question: Does the Express decrease network speeds when extending a network,
even when only n devices are active? If not, have I configured something incorrectly? Is there a fix?
I then moved my iMAC next to my PC laptop (one floor above the Extreme) and tried
speed tests again. The PC consistently came in at 17-18 Mbps while my iMAC came in
at 12-13 Mbps even though they were so close they could be touching.
Second question: Do I have something configured incorrectly? I recognize that the
speedt ests are not the best measure of network speed, but there definitely is a real
difference here.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

1. You cannot connect a hard drive to the Airport Express USB port.
2. The speed of wireless networking is faster than the speed of most cable internet services. Therefore, you won't notice any difference in your internet connection speed between (a) a cabled connection directly between Mac and modem or (b) a wireless connection between Mac and base station and modem.
3. Apple has not published any specs on the speed of hard drive access for the Airport Extreme N Base Station. Several people have posted their own measurements (do a search in this discussion forum), and generally those results are not very good.
4. Apple has not placed a limit on the number of drives you can attach to the Airport Extreme N Base Station (with use of a hub). How many do you want to connect?
5. You cannot remotely sync an iPod using the Extreme Base Station.

  • Extreme - Express question

I am using the new Extreme in my home with a G4 iBook. No problems. I purchased an Express to extend my network to my music studio which has a quad core Mac Pro and bad signal reception. Do I load the s/w for the Express on the studio machine or does it matter on which machine the s/w is loaded.
Also, how do I switch the Extreme to 2.4 GHz spectrum, as a lower wavelength may penetrate my music studio walls more effectively.
    Thanks,

Note: If the Mac is running Leopard, the necessary AirPort Utility is already installed. You will want to install the utility on any device that you will use to administer the base station.

Changing Radio Modes on the AEBSn
Either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network, or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN ports of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility in Manual Setup, check these settings:
    AirPort - Wireless
o Radio Mode: <Select the desired radio mode from the drop-down list.>

  • Few questions about Airport Extreme/Express

I have a few questions about Airport extreme/express:
1 Can you access hard drive trough express?
2 I have cable NOT wireless modem. What would be the best option (speed-wise) to connect to internet- connect modem to Extreme and access internet wirelessly from it? To connect modem to Extreme and imac?
3 How fast is read/ write from hard drive connected to Extreme?
4 How many hard drives can you connect to Extreme (or Express if that is possible)?
5 Can you remotely sync Ipod nano/ shuffle using Extreme?
I really hate wire clutter around my desk. What I intend to do is to connect hard drives and printer to Airport Extreme and access them remotely. That would leave empty desk:).
    Thanks

  • I am unable to see my Airport Extreme/Express on my MacBook via Airport Utility

    I have two issues:
    1. I am unable to see my Airport Extreme and my Airport Express via my MacBook Air's Airport Utility when I scan for Base Stations. However, the computer is happily connected to the wireless network of my Extreme (the Express is used to extend range)
    2. I am unable to see a HDD that is connected via USB cable to the Airport Extreme.
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thanks

    Further info:
    Setup
MacBook Air running OS X 10.5.8
    AirPort Extreme Base Station
AirPort Express used to extend range
    AirPort Utility v5.5.3
The MacBook Air is actually connected to the wireless network provided by the two AirPorts!
Oddly, I see both AirPorts just fine when using my older PowerBook G4 with an older version of the AirPort Utility.
In addition, I cannot see the external HDD connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station, and my wireless printer (HP D410a) suddenly stopped working via the MacBook Air. However, it works just fine from my iPhone, which is connected to the same AirPort Extreme/Express wireless network.
Recently, at the request of Sky Broadband, I switched to fixed IP addresses instead of DHCP, as I was having issues with the DHCP set-up.

  • Airport Extreme/Express vs. third-party routers

Do the common glitches in network connectivity with Leopard occur almost solely with third-party routers, or is it fairly commonly spreads between them and Extreme/Express users? Just curious.

In my line of work I setup various brands of wireless routers on a monthly basis.
I have not experience any network connectivity issues with any macs running leoapard. However there are on 3 models of router I have used since leoaprd came out.

  • Airport Utility - Not detecting Extreme/Express,

    Hi,
I've just upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7. I've installed the Airport Utility but it isn't detecting either the Airport Extreme/Express. I can manually connect to them through the utility by entering the ip addresses and I can connect to the wireless network.
The problems are that itunes isn't detecting the Airport Express therefore making it redundant and the wireless internet connection keeps dropping internet connectivity. I'm using a Netgear WN111v2 USB adaptor to connect. It was all running smoothly on Vista but not now.
I have tried disabling the firewall (AVG) and restarting everything but still no luck. The internet will work fine for a few minutes then every page will fail to load for about a minute even though it is still connected the the airport network. Eventually is will just start working again or if you disconnect/reconnect it will too.
I really am stuck at this point so need help. If any more information is needed just ask.
    Regards,
    Ivan

  • AurPort Extreme/Express?

    Hello,
I have high speed internet with a cable modem and am using the D-Link DIR-825 Xtreme N Dual Band Gigabit Router (2.4 & 5GHz) this - http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DIR-825-Xtreme-Gigabit-Router/dp/B001F7HLRC/ref=sr14?ie=UTF8&qid=1301712548&sr=8-4
Do I need the AirPort Extreme/Express then? My internet works flawlessly and I see no real use for those 2 fancy schmancy gadgets from Apple. Thanks.
P.S. I'm old school - when I want to listen to music I pop in a CD and blast my stereo.

Does not sound like you need it. You got a router that is working for you.
Hey, thanks! I was just curious to see if they offer anything mind blowing to justify the need to replace my D-Link which is only 2 months old.

  • Extremely dumb question

    Hi,
              This is really basics, but...
Replicated JNDI is the most obvious answer to the following questions,
but considering that bindings are removed on a failure of the host, it
              doesn't really work for failover.
Let say I have a stateless bean that provides a description of the
capabilities of a service implemented by the server application.
Doesn't really matter. Importantly, it is not related to any
particular session. A requirement states that the bean must not be
created till the first request to functions it provides is issued. So,
pre-instantiating it by the start-up classes is discouraged.
Where should I keep the reference to the stub after the bean is
created by the front-end servlet, so that it would survive failover
and would be available to all the servers in a cluster? Servers are
brought into the cluster dynamically over a period of time.
A similar question. Let say a user object is an application-wide
resource. Where do I keep it, so that it would survive a failover?
              Thanx

  • Extreme/Express network problem - short wave intereference?

    Hi,
I have an extreme base station, an imac core duo in the same room and an express in the livingroom about 20+/- feet away. I want to stream music to the livingroom and extend the network so my ibook gets a strong signal in the living room. I had this all set and life was good for a few months. Suddenly weak or no signal, music cutting out, losing connection on the ibook. Often no connection in the LR and blinking orange light on the express. I reset express, triple checked and restarted everything to the point of starting from scratch. Thought maybe it was microwave (when not on?) fridge or cordless phone (phone now in a different place). I do have concrete walls. The kitchen was recently remodeled, the only new appliance is the microwave, and there are new cabinets and a wall was removed. But no conclusions to the problem.
Then the other night a friend looked at my neighbors yard and said "what is that big antenna?" It's not new, but the neighbor appears to have a shortwave or CB or some setup. It's been there all along. Sometimes I heard voices on the cheap speakers I used to have in the office... I thought is was CB from the nearby highway but come to think of it ... always the same voice.
So... I know NOTHING about shortwave or CB stuff. Is this likely my problem? I am waiting to see them in the yard so I can ask what it is. If it is my problem, is there anything I can do to resolve??
    Thanks!

Anything that operates at 2.4 GHz can cause interference with your wireless network. I don't know if shortwave or CB operate near this frequency but I don't believe so.

  • Westell/Airport Extreme/Airport Express question

I've read so many different options to extend a wireless network my head's spinning.
Have Westell DSL modem; Have had the Extreme also routing (but causing double NAT problems) so want to bridge it. Just got Airport Express, which I want to also put in bridge mode, connect to AEBS via Ethernet, providing wireless coverage in a distant room in the house.
    Question 1:
Can both the Extreme and the Express be put in bridge mode, so that all they're doing is providing wireless coverage? I'd do all my Port forwarding in the Westell then.
Question 2: I thought I had the Express plugged into a port on the Extreme, but discovered it was actually plugged into the Westell (two wireless networks "side by side". If they're named the same, will it work that way? I would like access to the hard drive plugged into the Extreme, no matter which wireless network I'm accessing.
My suspicion is that the setup will work, but it's not *really* extending my Extreme network at all; it's just another network. All the IPs though are coming from the Westell.
    I'm very confused!

    Question 1:
Can both the Extreme and the Express be put in bridge mode, so that all they're doing is providing wireless coverage? I'd do all my Port forwarding in the Westell then.
    Yes.

Is your goal to have both AirPorts be connected back to the Westell gateway by Ethernet? If so, you can configure the entire network as a roaming network. If on the other hand, you will only have the Extreme connected to the gateway by Ethernet and the Express connected to the Extreme by wireless, then you can configure the AirPorts for an extended network?
Please check out this Apple Support article on extending networks with AirPorts.

  • Express/Extreme Connection Question

can I use my Express to connect to my home Extreme network to use as an AirPlay speaker connection and, at a later time, use it alone as a network for when I travel by plugging it into an ethernet cable in a hotel etc?

Open AirPort Utility, select the AirPort Express and click Manual Setup
Shift the focus of your eyes from the window in the center of the screen up to the very top of the screen and you will see the AirPort Utility menu items in the same toolbar as the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
Click the Base Station menu item at the top of the screen

  • Extreme & Express (hopefully) simple question

    Hi
I've got an AEBS that I'm trying to connect to an Express to play iTunes on my stereo. Do I also need a PCI Airport card in my G4 to enable this feature?
I thought the AEBS just plugged into the ethernet socket and acted like an external version of an internal Airport card. The Airport icon doesn't show up in the network connection or menu bar.
Bit of a first timer in the whole wireless connection area, does it show? I guess there's a simple answer, help me people.

    No.
I thought the AEBS just plugged into the ethernet
socket and acted like an external version of an
    internal Airport card.
    You're perfectly right.
Here is how your chain should be connected:<pre>
    Ethernet AirPort stereo cable
    Mac ======== AEBS ~~~~~~~ AX ------------ stereo</pre>
    The Airport icon doesn't show
up in the network connection or menu bar.
That's normal. You don't need an AirPort connection from
your Mac to your AEBS. You may use the Ethernet connection.
Your will have to configure your AEBS through your Ethernet
    connection.
I advise you to carefully read your documentation about
the way to make such a configuration.

  • Question: What's the difference between the Airport Extreme & Express?

I have read the specs on the Apple site a couple times and while I can see that the Extreme costs $80 more I cannot see difference from a functional or performance perspective.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks.

  • Networking Question with Extreme & Express

If I am standing within 1 to 40 feet of  A  my phone connects to the network through A with a strong signal.
If I am standing within 1 to 20 feet of  B  my phone connects to the network through B with a strong signal.
If I am standing within 1 foot of  C  my phone connects to the network through B with a very weak signal and will not connect through C.
B and C are set up to extend the network at A.
Obviously C is not extending the network, (and is set up to accept wireless clients like B).  Is it possible to select the point at which to connect?
