Extreme hard disk formats

Is exFat supported for the disk sharing in the airport extreme,
I want to keep the disk format in a readable form for windows and mac, this a external hard drive that i carry with me sometimes for file sharing.
I know Fat32 is supported, But this limits me to copying files to it that can be no larger than 4gig. I don't know if any of the mac formats will be supported in windows.
Basically the question is, what format can i use for disc sharing that is support on both mac and windows when plugged in directly via usb and the airport extreme can support. Also without file size limitations?

Is exFat supported for the disk sharing in the airport extreme
No, exFAT (aka FAT64) formatted HDDs are not supported by the AirPort when connected by USB for file sharing. As you are probably already aware, the AirPort File Server will only work with drives, formatted in: FAT16/FAT32 or HFS+. Note: Regardless of format, the AirPort will use both the SMB & AFP file sharing protocols to share out the drive to Windows, Linux, or OS X clients.

The only option for this would be FAT32. However, the AirPort works best with HFS+ and you can mount HFS+ volumes on Windows with third-party solutions. One example is: Paragon Software's HFS for Windows

One other option you might want to consider is exFat.
Its supported on Mac and Windows, and even my TV!
Its got very large file (128PB) and volume size support.
    Cheers.
    Not again.
The OP wants this to use with a PS3, which does not support exFat. So that suggestion (while quite correct on its face) won't work.
    Maybe this will help you.
Check what the File System type is. Do this by going to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Manager. Select the external drive and read the "File System" type. The file system type must be FAT32 in order for the PlayStation to recognize it.
Split larger, high quality files into smaller files, if necessary. FAT32 has a limit of 3.9 Gigabytes per file, which means some high quality HD movies might have to be split into smaller files, and that makes it less than ideal for some HD content.

  • Ultra Sparc 10, WD 80GB Hard Disk format problem

How does one get over the - Contact manufacturer for formating error ?
I have an US10, and am trying to install a 2nd Western Digital 80GB hard disk.
The format command sees this disk as a 2nd disk but only of 11GB capacity.
It does not let me format this disk further.
    Any help appreciated.
    Arvind.

    HI ARAVIND,
First of all I have not so far seen any limitation to disk size on ultra 10. Recently, i.e., 3 days back, I
installed an 80GB Seagate Baracuda HDD on Ultra 10, of course with some teeting problems. At first
I could get only 11.3 GB by default, or 64.5 GB by forcing the disk geometry. I really tried hard to make
this work beyond 64.5GB. As this was for a customer of ours, we had to make it work. I was frantically
searching the internet, and landed in some forum, where somebody replied to exactly similar query to
install Solaris 8 for HDD of capacitiies higher than 20GB. So Bang, I changed the OS to Solaris 8. But
Alas! I got only 74.5 GB capacity. Again went back to Seagate site and found that the figure of 156,301,488
MAX SECTORSwhen multiplied with 1024*1024*1024 you arrive at 74.5 GB, whereas if multiply this
number by 1000*1000*1000 you arrive at 80 Billion Bytes. However I am able to use this disk without any
problem now. So first install Solaris 8 and continue your R&&D. I wasted 4 days in getting this info.

  • Please help me.ı delete mac os on my harddisk and ı format it ntfs.now ı have a mac os x install dvd but not working.ı think it is not working because of my hard disk format is ntfs.what can ı do?????

ı delete mac os x lion on my hard disk and ı format it ntfs.ı install windows xp.now ı have a mac os x snow leopard install dvd but it isn't working. ı think it's not working because of my harddisk format is ntfs.what can ı do for install mac os x ?thanks

The HD must be partitioned with GUID partition map and Mac OS extended (journalled) file system. Do not partition the drive into two. When you have a working OS X system, use Boot Camp to create the Windows partition and install Windows.
If you're trying to install Snow Leopard on a Mac that was delivered with Lion installed =
    1. It may not be possible at all depending on the Mac.
    2. If it is possible, it cannot be done with the retail SL disc which is 10.6.3
    3. The only way it can be done is to obtain the original grey discs which would have come with the Mac if it hadn't had Lion installed in the supply chain. They will be at least 10.6.6 and more likely 10.6.7 or .8. You can try to obtain those from Apple Customer Services.

What Brand is it? What connection method (USB, FireWire or Network) are you using? Why and what do you want to change the Format to? Is it new, old, was it working before?

Is the box for ☐ External disk check in your General Finder Preference? Have you checked in Disk Utility or your System Profiler to see if it is recognized by the iMac?

  • Hard Disk Format Question Ple

Had a thought the other day that I wondered if anyone new the answer to...
I was reading that some people had damaged their hard-disks of their players via shocks and dropping. With a PC hard-disk, when you format it it can detect damaged sectors and marks them and then ignores them, making the disk smaller but still usable (Forgive my ignorance if this is not the exact technical method it uses).
When you perform a format on a Zen-type MP3 player does the format program have a similar function I wonder?
    Thanks a lot
    Alex

As far as I know even a normal PC scan disk when done on thorough mode will identify damaged sectors and mark them for ignore (Could be wrond though) and if you do a pc format through MS-dos it tends to tell you how many sectors etc there are and notify you of how many are damaged and ignored.
This is all only half-knowledge though (Maybe less than that ) and so im not sure how it relates to the players.
I had a damaged hard dri've earlier this yeat on Win2000 and everytime it developed erros and I formatted, it got slightly smaller. Eventually it totally died though.
Id just wondered whether there was this kind of recovery for the mp3 zen's as I keep worrying about dropping the thing
    Thanks for the reply
PS: Good name BTW, read quite a few of the books.

  • I need to re install creative cloud and related desktop application after hard disk formatting. Please advise?

My hard disk got reformatted recently, please advise how to re install creative cloud and related desktop application like LR & PS on the same machine.

    Hello,
to reinstall CC shouldn't be a problem. You could download all the programs you need in the "try" Version from Adobe's download website. Because you have all needed serial numbers and so on, you can change your programs into "real" versions.
Maybe it'*s necessary, that you have to activate/deactivate pleae have a look there:

  • Windows can't find AirPort Extreme Hard Disk

I just moved and am trying to set up my wireless network again. I have my AirPort Extreme hooked into my router and my external hard drive hooked into the AirPort. My Macbook Pro can see the hard drive and access it without any problems but my Windows machine, which is running XP and is wired into an AirPort Express, cannot seem to access the hard drive. Is there a trick to this? I remember I got it to work before but I wasn't using the AirPort Express...the Windows computer was wired directly into the Extreme. Any ideas?

My Airdisks are no longer visible in "My Computer", but I can find them (and mount them) from "My Network Places". Mabey a 7.4 thing? I have never set up a windows workgroup, just PnP'd, and everything worked.
Make sure you have airport disk utility (for Windows) installed also, but if your network worked before, I assume you have.

  • Folders that I copy from my Macbook to my External Hard Disk does NOT appear on any other drive that I connect the Hard disk to (TV, PC, ... etc.)

    I'm facing a bit of a problem.
Any folder I copy from my Macbook Pro to my External Hard Disk does NOT appear on any other device that I connect the Hard Disk to (TV, PC, etc).
The Hard disk format is "MS-DOS (FAT)".
The folders that are copied from Macbook appear when I connect the Hard Disk to my Macbook only, yet, the folders that I copy from a PC to the Hard Disk appear on Macbook, PC, and TV and are also available from editing from both Mac and PC.
I was advised to install "Paragon" software and I did but I'm not sure how to use it to convert the folders on the hard drive to any format that can be read on other drives or devices (NTFS or otherwise).
I'd appreciate some help. Thank you.

Hi Simon.  How is it formatted, FAT or NTFS?
I only ask as OSX will only read NTFS partitions unless you install an App such as Paragon NTFS or Tuxera NTFS.

  • Migrating root hard disks

Hello, fellow Arch users. I'm running a small and private ftp server here at my university with 4 hard disks, and I'm limited to 6. The disks are organized as followed:
    - 2x500GB with a boot partition formatted with EXT2 in a RAID1, a swap partition in a RAID 1 and a third partition in a RAID0 and part of an LVM volume group
    - 2x1000GB, all in a RAID0 and part of said volume group
The VG is split into a 20GB root partition and the rest is space for the ftp server. Migrating the data inside the volume group should not be too hard with pvmove. But I'm a bit concerned about the computer being able to boot afterwards. Has anyone done this before? My approach right now would be:
    - Insert the new hard disks
    - format them like the old 500GB ones (i.e. 100MB for /boot, 250MB for swap, the rest for the LVM volume)
    - create the RAIDs
    - add the big RAID to the VG
    - use pvmove
    - mount the new /boot partition to a temporary folder
    - copy all files from /boot to the temporary boot
But what do I do next? My guess would be to edit /etc/fstab accordingly, reinstall grub like described in the wiki and then editing /boot/grub/menu.lst. It's not urgent, but it would be nice if anyone here had ever done something similiar and could confirm if that's the right way or tell me how it must be done. Thanks in advance.

Those steps sound pretty accurate. Even if something does go wrong, you can always boot the Arch LiveCD and fix Grub from there.

    BACKUP DISK

Your backup disk is case sensitive, your system disk isn't. While your backup disk treats "Test.txt" different then "test.txt", your system disk wouldn't. You can't copy your backups to the system disk.
Why is your backup disk case sensitive? That's usually not necessary. To change that you'd need to format the disk.
If you want to keep your backups your only option would be to get another hard disk, format it case sensitive and copy your backups to it.
The other option is to format your current backup disk, but this time make it "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and start a fresh backup.
