Extreme Heat... again!!

OK... now I'm getting a little frustrated here.
I am on my 4th phone, and it looks like I will soon be saying my 5th.
Phone #1 - Battery life very poor, extreme heat in use and when charging. This developed after 2 weeks of use. WiFi and Bluetooth off, auto backlight, ~20% brightness.
Phone #2 - All radios died (WiFi, Bluetooth, GSM, EDGE) and a message popped up saying "Service Required: iPhone cannot make or receive calls." Restore did not fix the issue, and in fact, bricked the phone.
Phone #3 - GSM signal loss, with no return until phone was turned off and back on. This is in 5 bar locations, all other phones in same location no issues. Sent in via Apple Care and replaced.
Phone #4 - This phone has now developed the same issue as phone #1. Extreme heat during use and charging, VERY poor battery life (drains in standby after 12 hours w/ WiFi and Bluetooth off, auto backlight, ~20% brightness, in a strong signal strength area.) This has developed after 1 week.
The phones have only been connected to the charger and cable supplied. Dock is used sometimes.
What is going on? This thing is so hot, I can feel the heat coming off of the glass screen when hovering my hand about 1/2 inch above the glass.
I don't want to get a refund for the phone... but this is frustrating getting a replacement week or so.
Any suggestions as to what is causing this? Anything I can do to troubleshoot the issue?
I tried a hard boot thinking possibly a software issue (infinite loop.) No deal.
I have an infrared thermometer I can shoot it with when I get home to see what the actual non-subjective temperature is.
As I write this... I'm starting to smell that "overheated electronic component" smell... but I haven't seen the "Ghost" come out yet.

I wonder if it is related to the problem I had the other day. I had checked email and done a few things, then went to my friends house. When I pulled the iphone out last it only showed half the battery life it had no more than an hour ago and it felt very warm near the top half. I went to check email again and it just sat there saying it was checking at the bottom, but the top did not show the usual 'iphone beachball' that it usually did. I could not get any new emails nor browse the web, only a hard reset took care of it. It was almost as if it was had been stuck in transmit mode for some time and was locked up. That is why the battery life dropped drastically and felt warm.

  • Extreme heating, full noise fan and kernel 150% cpu

My MBA is protected by Apple care and always had this heating problem.
Specially in the summer I have extreme heating problems, and kernel 150% of cpu slow down the computer irreparably, fan is at full throttle 6200 rpm and heating reached 85 degrees Celsius.
I have upgraded all the software, i read all the thread here, I have called the Apple customer care but i NEVER found a solution to this big problem.
Does anyone can help me to address the situation?
    Thanks!

No, the cause and effect is opposite
It's not happening on mine. Here is my 1st generation 1.6Ghz MacBook Air w/Snow Leopard running a YouTube Flash video, Hardware Monitor and System Load maxed out at 100% for over 10 minutes.

As you can see, the kernel task is only 3.0, CPU core temps are about 68C and the CPU clock frequency has not lowered. I might also add there is a Speck SeeThru case attached to the computer.
I suggest trying the same test. If your CPU core temps get considerably higher and kernel tasks rises at the same rate, I would say you have a cooling issue--possibly with the thermal module. The CPU/GPU may need more grease.

    1.  any updates to corret the extreme heating with use of safari 5.1?  running same webpages on this vs 5.0.8 gets the computer >2x hotter! any way to correct it?

If you have Private Browsing enabled, that's why you aren't staying logged into websites. Same with Google maps.
Private Browsing doesn't  "remember" AutoFill information.
Click History in the menu bar then click: Clear History

  • Extreme heating while closed in backpack

I'm running the most recent iteration of the MacBook 15" - 2.4GHz that I have had for nearly three weeks now. Twice in the last week I have pulled the laptop out of my backpack to find it very hot, so much so that the colors on the LCD were not displaying correctly (no color, just shades of gray) and the battery life was down to about 5%. I shut the computer completely down and let it cool off for an hour or two before turning it back on. When it came back on the LCD worked just fine and the battery charged up to 100% just fine again.
In both cases, the laptop had been plugged in just prior to its being closed and put in the backpack and was at (or very near) 100% battery. The laptop was in the backpack both times for only about an hour. The lid of the laptop had been closed, but the computer had not been manually shut down.
At first I was worried that I had placed the laptop in front of one of my car's heating vents on the way home to create the heat, but the second time that it happened the laptop's bag was sitting in the seat with no vents directly on or near it. Has anyone else experienced this kind of "exceptional" heating while their MBPs are sitting in backpacks/bags? I've just installed the iStat widget so that I can provide more accurate temperature numbers if/when it happens again.

It would seem that the Mac is waking up or hadn't gone to sleep in the first place.
A little bit of detective work analyzing the system logs can be used to determine if this is the case. If you've never delved into what the logs contain, try this procedure. First put the Mac to sleep, making sure it is really sleeping (pulsing LED pilot light, no sounds from the HDD). Wake it up and open Console, found in Utilities. Examine the contents of the Console Messages window, as well as the system.log output: correlate the time stamps to the various messages the computer puts out as it goes thru the process of going to sleep as well as waking up afterwards. Once familiar with what kind of messages both events (sleep/wakeup) produce, go back in time in the logs to those occasions when you have had the overheating incidents. While the Console Messages output may be truncated, you can usually find older system.log files archived further down the list (i.e., system.log.0.bz2, system.log.1.bz2, etc.). Check and see if the computer is, indeed, waking up when it shouldn't, and the info on the logs is the most reliable way to find out what's going on.
Why? I have the suspicion that the magnetic closure on the new models is not working correctly and that the lid is popping open inside the bags due to a bump or jarring motion. Yours is but the latest of a ever-growing list of similar reports. On previous models you had to push a recessed button to get the lid to open.

  • Airport extreme frustration again

Don't know why, my first post didn't send a complete topic, sorry, trying again.
OK folks, I've an airport extreme base station connected to a G4 ( with no airport card) via ethernet, it shows up ok and i can configure it. I've a mac mini in another room with an airport card. I've another mac in my office connected to a BTVoyager which has worked out of the box flawlessly since I got it. My mac mini connects to the voyager wirlessly, flawlessly every time but I cannot get the airport base station to allow my G4 to connect to the voyager.
What do I have to do to get this to work or am I beating my head against the wall?
    Peter

...It seems odd that the AEBS can't connect but the card in a mac mini can...
Because the AEBS doesn't know how to be a wireless client. The Mac mini does.
if I get one of those PCI airport cards for the G4 would I be able to connect to the Voyager network.
Yes something like that will work. Just ensure that it is compatible with Mac and the version of Mac OS that you are running.

  • RX9800 extreme heat problems

I have an MSI RX9800 TD-128 (Radeon 9800) and the problem is the card gets EXTREMELY hot; by that I mean so hot I can barely touch the heatsink for more than a few seconds. There are no problems regarding stability or image quality (like rendering errors), though. So I'd like to know if temperatures that high are normal for this card (remember, I can barely touch the heatsink, it's that hot).
It is definitely not the result of an insufficiently ventilated case, since the results are the same even with the case open. Also the case is very well ventilated (4 fans), with the CPU (Pentium 4 3GHz) barely reaching 45 degrees centigrade during highest load and all metal parts inside the case, including the harddrive being virtually cold to the touch.

does that VGA silencer cool the ram chips too ? what about those on the back of the card ? as I said, there are no stability problems, even when overclocking, so the temperatures don't seem to be that much over the top; but it still seems waaay too hot for me.
btw, you can't touch the ram chips on this card (not that you'd want to; it would probably help if you wanted to remove your fingerprints permanently... ) because the heatsink covers them on the front and a simple heatsink (read: metal plate) on the back of the card.

  • Extreme heat when on charge

    hey everyone,
i just bought my macbook pro yesterday.( new 15" 2.2GHz i7 processor)
i put it on charge while using it and it became really hot.
also when I'm on Skype the fan starts spinning a lot and my macbook heats up and i cant keep it on my lap.
    why is this so?
any1 got this problem with their mac?

Yes, take it back to Apple... you have a one year warranty. Assuming they replace it, make sure you try the new one before leaving the store.
You'll probably need to make an appointment at your local Genius bar... http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/

  • Extreme heat on an 2008 MBP

    Hi,
My MBP has been heating up quite rapidly.
The CPU has gone up to 74 degrees (Celsius), and the GPU to 76.
About the same thing happened once when I was trying to load Windows 7 VIA Parallels. I figured I was overloading the CPU and therefor it was heating up.
    The problem now is different:
I'm not running any heavy applications.
As a matter of fact the only applications I'm running right now are:
Skype, Adium, Adobe Reader, Firefox and Mail. One would think that the processing power needed for these Applications are low...
What's more the fan speed does not increase at all(!). It just sits and stays at 2000Rpm...
Enviroment: Room temperature - 25 degrees Celsius (airconditioned).
    OS: OSX 10.6.4 Snow Leopard
    Processor: Intel Core2Duo 2.5GHz
    GPU: nVidia Geforce 8600M
this is NOT the unibody version, it's the previous aluminum version.
added a screenshot to better explain my problem:

Have you used Activity Monitor to check for runaway background processes? If so, did you change AM's "Show" window from its default of "My Processes" to "All Processes?" This is important because the typical rogue background process is not owned by the logged-in user but by the system.
Also close all user apps when you check for a runaway. It's easier to spot if the computer is at "normal idle." Anti-virus software is notorious for eating up background processes. So can third-party backup programs
Are you using an external monitor with the built-in display closed? That can trap heat.
Open System Profiler (In Applications > Utilities) and see what "SMC Version system)" reports. There was an SMC update after the discovery of the nVidea 8600 issues that changes the fan behavior presumably to provide better cooling. If installed, the Profiler entry for SMC version should start with 1.3.
I take it you have the MBP positioned so air can get to the case bottom? That's an important part of the cooling system.

  • Extreme Heat melted glue I think, phone is flooded.

Hello im currently in a holiday in Indonesia where its really hot right now. My phone is overheating constantly when i play games such as asphalt and i think it must have melted the glue on my brand new sony z1 which is only 4 days old!!! When i gave my phone a quick rinse to let it cool down, the touchscreen stopped working. I checked all the flaps and the indicator turned red . I read that intense heat can melt the glue and it seems like a common problem. Will i be able to get warrenty for this if i live in Hong Kong? Or will they think that its my fault that i didnt close my flaps even though i check every time it gets close to water? Im just really sad as ive been saving up for this phone for about half a year and it didnt even make it a week
Thanks to everyone that can help me

    @mouseboyz
    Here is my case:
    04-Dec-2013 - Bought Sony Xperia Z1
11-Dec-2013 - Wash with normal pressure water tap for less than a minute. All the flaps are closed tightly and after 30 minutes, the phone went dead and unable to start. All flaps indicator are remain as white and the phone has never drop or flawless exterior.
11-Dec-2013 - Send in to Sony Authorized Service Center at The Curve, Mutiara Damansara,Malaysia. All flaps indicator checked are in white. Suspected leakage at the glass area.
12-Dec-2013 - Call up Sony Service Center (Singapore), customer service representative insisted a repair to be carry out on the phone. I have request for new replacement subject to consumer fairness as a factory defective unit are being sold to a consumer.
If I could not get a new replacement or a full refund with a defective unit, I am taking legal action against Sony.
Today is 16-Dec-2013, I am still waiting for my phone to reach their technician hand.

  • Extreme Heat On Macbook

Lately I've been playing World of Warcraft on my Macbook, and when I play it my Macbook gets really hot. Whithin 10 mins the bottom is hot to the touch. Is there any way to reduce this heat or should I even worry about it?

I actually called apple support for this very reason. Temps were originally getting up over 84c, made me just a little uncomfortable. Chuck over at apple support did a little digging, and the thermal shutdown limit on the CPU is 115c, GPU 110c. I thought the same as the above, that my high temps were on GPU, not CPU, and chuck corrected me on this. He said the 9400 actually runs COOLER than the processor due to how the proc was designed.
As far as getting your temps DOWN, Smcfancontrol is a great freeware program for manually controlling your fans. Also, 10.5.6 included a gfx update that has made HUGE improvements on my macbook in terms of temp, as well as a decent boost in my FPS.
You didn't specifically specify your temps, but if you're under 100c you're good according to apple. Also, macbook fans seem to be notorious for waiting until the last second to spin up [originally mine wouldn't start to spin up until my temps hit 90c!] and even then it was a gradual 500-1k rpm spinup.

  • MacBook Pro (Mid-2010) - Loud Fans and Extreme Heat

    Hi all,
When just playing simple Youtube videos or facebook games, my fans spin at high RPM and are very loud and the underside gets extremely hot (CPU > 80 deg. Celsius). Running OSX 10.8.5. What may be the issue here? It has only starting becoming apparent recently.
Thanks in advance! Im not sure what other information to include right now.

This is with a youtube video playing.
Hope this works, I appreciate the help!
Google chrome helper can read anywhere from high 80's to just under 130 percent too. Likewise, when I have skype active, that does the same thing.

  • The extreme heat that comes from my macbook pro

my macbook pro gets so hot where my left palm rests on the laptop that it becomes unbearable. This happens often when I have alot of processes running and I could understand if the laptop just got a little bit hot from doing this task, but this intense heat generation is unacceptable and generally occurs more when I use the apple OS on my computer than the windows OS (even when i am playing hardware intense games on windows it never gets this hot)
I am currently downloading files wirelessley, listening to music, the keyboard is illuminated, the fans are spinning at a normal 1999 rpm's and the temperatures of my hardware seem normal, I am typing on my lap in a chair, but I am allowing proper ventillation from the back of the laptop and it still gets this hot occasionally when I am using it on a surface.
The heat only comes from that one spot underneath my wrist, any suggestions?

Hi, I have the exact same problem. You can read my thread on:

Well, besides FanControl, there is also the CoolBook utility were you can undervolt the CPU (without decreasing performance). However, the area we’re worried about is where the HD is located, lowering the CPU heat might not help. But since the entire case is in aluminum, it just might
I haven’t messed with CoolBook yet, as it doesn’t fully support Santa Rosa yet, and would also like to hear more experience from other MBP users.

  • Watching flash-based movies (youtube) causes extreme heating.

By overheating, I mean a sudden jump to 80+ degrees C. Activity Mon shows safari using 100-101% proc capacity. I have no idea what is happening.
This problem never used to occur. I do not remember altering anything significant with my machine, other than normal updates. I did not install any safari mods or anything of the sort. Nor have I installed any apps that interact directly with Safari (that I know of), which would cause such a thing to occur.
    Any help appreciated!

Latest version of Flash - 9.0.115 is somewhat buggy. Probably the reason for the spike in CPU activity. Alternative is to downgrade to Flash 9.0.47.
Here's how to "downgrade" to Flash 9.0.47.
You can obtain a copy here. Download "Flash Player 9". When you open the package, open the "9r47 Folder". There, select flashplayer9r47ubmac.dmg.zip for your Intel machine. This installs Flash 9.0.47, which seems to be the most stable version of Flash.
After Flash is installed, Safari automatically opens confirming the installation of the plug-in. Quit Safari. Then per above "repair permissions".
Restart Safari and try a Flash site.

  • HP ENVY 17 - Heating issues

    Hello,
Has anybody found a solution for the extreme heat generated by HP ENVY 17.
    Thanks,
    Sanjay

I own an HP Envy 17, and I am highly dissatisfied with it.  This computer was purchased when I made the decision to go back to school.  I wanted a computer that would last me for at least four years.  I honestly thought that this was the computer.  I have always bought HP when it came to computers.  Not anymore though.  Since I have had this computer I have had to send it back twice for over heating.  The first time they replaced the thermal module.  I got the computer back and it worked okay for a little while.  Then it started to overheat again.  So I sent it back again.  When I got it back the second time they had to replace a speaker, the optical disc drive. and reseat the thermal module.  To me it was more than obvious that the over heating had caused some other issues within the computer.  The day that I got it back it over heated again!!!!  I called, and was told that it was my wireless mouse that was causing the issue.  I tried explaining to the person that my mouse had nothing to do with over heating.  This person also told me that when they had it the computer never over heated.  I find that kind of hard to believe since they have replaced so many parts, and had to re-seat one of the parts.  Through out this whole ordeal every person that I have talked to has told me that I needed to keep the computer on a flat surface.  So that is what I have done.  Yesterday I called HP yet again because my computer is over heating.  They told me that they would send me the package to send it in for repair.  I told the person that this was unacceptable, and asked to speak to a supervisor.  I wanted one of two things.  I either wanted a brand new machine, or I wanted my money back.  At this point I was told that he did not have a supervisor, and he would have a case manager call me back within 24-48 hours.  I received the phone call today.  The case manager said that he had two options for me.  One option was to have someone come to my house to look at it (but that would be the long way because it could take a couple of weeks), or I could send it in for repair again.  By now I am more than irritated.  I explained to him that his options were not acceptable, and told him the two options that I would accept.  I also asked to talk to his supervisor.  He told me that there was not a supervisor available, and that I would have to call back later.  By this point I am so irritated that I see red.  Before we hung up the phone he told me that whether or not the computer was replaced was under the discretion of HP.  That is all fine, and well.  However this computer has been nothing but problems since it was purchased.  With that being said it is not my fault that the computer is over heating all the time.  The only option for HP is to give me a new machine, or my money back.  [Legal Discussion Removed]  I should not have to send my computer back every couple of months because they have no idea what they are doing.  I will never again buy any HP product.
