Extreme lag since updating to 10.8.1

I have a Mac Mini 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8GB of ram that ran like a champ up until the very latest update of Mountain Lion 10.8.1.  Since then, it is agonizingly sluggish.
The mouse always plays 'catch-up' with me if I move it around too quickly, using the Internet is an exercise in frustration as my Mini just sits and thinks about the link I've just clicked on, then finally begins loading the page but at such a slow rate that I'm almost convinced I'm back in the bad old days of 56k dial-up (heck even that seemed more peppy and responsive now that I think about it).  Once a page begins loading, I can't do *anything* with my Mini till it is finished, usually between 30-45 seconds later.  It is the same whether I'm in my favorite browser Chrome, or Safari or Firefox or even Aurora.
Don't even get me started on the near-tears I'm brought to when I fire up iTunes or iPhoto.    Is my extreme performance degradation isolated or is there something going on with anyone else?
Oh yes, I have ran Disk Utility and it states everything is fine.  I make sure I run only 1 app at a time just to make sure system resources aren't being hosed for some reason, but I've ran out of ideas.
I just don't understand why a simple update would have so completely ruined my user experience?  Mountain Lion 10.8.0 was just fine.
Help!

Hello BDAqua,
I've ran Disk Utility and everything including S.M.A.R.T. checked out fine.
Here is a screen shot of the Activity Monitor as it appeared just a moment ago...
The first thing to stand out to me from what you asked is the large number of Page outs.
Here is the Disk Usage tab view...
Finally, here is the Console view but I haven't the foggiest idea of what I should be looking for...
So far, I've locked onto the Page outs and will start researching what that is referring to and go from there.  If you or anyone else has any ideas or suggestions, I'm all ears here!
Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro running extremely slow since updating to Yosemite

    Hello All,
I am new to the community and I'm hoping your pooled expertise can assist me with my issues. I went ahead and posted the results of my diagnostic scan below. My main concerns are that my Macbook Pro is now extremely slow after OSX updates. Also, laptop is running extremely hot to touch. I have mentioned other ongoing issues. I offer thanks in advance for any assistance.
    Problem description:
    Macbook Pro 13":
    Purchased in mid-2010.
    Most Recent Issue (Main Concern):
    (1) I recently updated OS X from Mountain Lion to Maverick. Computer began running extremely slow and “jerky.”
(1.1) Shortly after this I updated to OS X Yosemite. Computer runs, and types, even slower than before.
Ongoing Issues (Greater than one year):
    (1) Extremely short battery life (may last two hours on full charge)
    (2) Macbook runs extremely hot to touch (fan runs continuously but can’t begin to keep it cool)
    (3) SD Card reader doesn't recognize/open an SD card when inserted.
    Lex Cschellings Requested the Following:
No obvious elements in the list.
This may well be a dying disk and/or a very bad battery.
    Do following:
make a new etrecheck list and in the problem description put what Applications->Utilities->SystemInformation says about the battery (under the Power heading in the left panel): give cycle count and battery condition.
Then post the link in a new thread.
In the meantime the crash report is probably a French Dictionary issue (font? garcon garçon) you have installed, uninstall that and see if it happens again.

  • Response time is extremely slow since update

Since the update over the weekend, my phone takes such a long time to respond to a touch that I wonder if it has completely frozen up.  It's like this no matter what screen I am on or what tasks I am doing - all apps, pics, texts, etc...EVERYTHING IS SLOW!!! The signal suddenly drops when on calls and internet - 4G, 3G, wifi - they all just stop.  I have tried rebooting, have taken the battery & memory/SIM cards out - no improvement at all.  Is anyone else having these problems?? Any helpful hints??

A hard reset isn't that bad.  I removed my SD card before doing it.  So lots of personal pictures and things like that all remain intact.
A fresh start on reloading apps isn't always a bad thing either ;-)
It was less than 15 minutes to have it back functioning as a phone... then re-customizing began.
I was seeing a number of apps not available to me since the TBolt was on the Gingerbread version of Android.  While the newer OS may be more heavyweight, hopefully there are some efficiencies too.  Time will tell ;-)

  • Totally frustrated - Internet moving extremely slow since update

Just started happening recently out of no where - I browse with Safari - but just realized it also happens with Firefox - takes forever to open a page - and forget it if even the simplest of multimedia, like pictures, happen to be on the page - for example a simple imdb.com page - and if i go to YouTube to play a simple 5 minute movie - well i can't wait long enough for it - could be twenty minutes before the thing will actually play without stopping every two seconds.
I feel like this started happening ever since I did my last updates which was for Safari... It is usually always something like that, being that once I installed a quicktime update, and all my videos lost audio - It was crazy. I thought updates were supposed to help! And apple does nothing about this stuff.
I have already "emptied the cache", "reset safari", and "repaired disc utility' - to no avail I should not have to be doing a ton of other stuff, and finagling with my computer in areas i shouldn't be, and don't understand, just to fix something that an update from Apple has upset. So frustrating!

    Hi Eww - Thank you...
Sorry, I thought I did say the update I did was "Safari" - Safari 3.2 to be exact on Nov 19th. This only started happening right after, that I know... And I am finding around the internet the same problem with no resolution. People noting a very similar problem since doing an update, some having done the most recent one (this very week's update which I don't even want to go near now), with more devastating results:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1804312&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8530167#8530167
I agree that it shouldn't be effecting Firefox - but it is... I don't claim to understand how that would work, but if things always made sense, we wouldn't constantly be needing to find "third party" fixes to things...
My hard drive is just above 100 GBs, and about half remains. no huge storage files have been adopted... I have not changed any network settings. I get a strong wireless signal, however, I am not sure what you mean by running OS X maintenance tasks- Could you please advise?
I have cleared the cache, reset safari, and repaired permissions on the HD...

  • Since updating to ISO 8 my iPod touch keeps dropping me from from wifi.i have to keep rebooting. I have an airport extreme which looks like a white space ship. Can anyone help.thank you

Since updating to ISO ate my iPod touch fifth-generation keeps dropping me from Wi-Fi I have an older AirPort Extreme that looks like a white spaceship does anybody have any solutions I have an iPad first-generation and my girlfriend has an iPod touch fifth-generation that she hasn't updated yet and there is no problem with those two units

I would either say that the iOS is correpted due to a software glitch or y have have a hardware problem like bad memory locations that are corrupting the iOS.
    - Restore from backup via iTunes. This will install a fresh copy of the iOS. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.   This will elimate corruptin in the backup causing the problem.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Since update. My 4s phone is using extreme data. All settings have not changed. Had to turn off location settings. Got any ideAs.m

since update iPhone 4s is using extreme data that I have had to turn off all locations. Why has this happened as before update no problem. Any feedback welcome.

I would try to identify what is using the data. You can go to Settings > Cellular > Use Cellular Data For and that will show a list of apps with the amount of cellular data used by each. At the bottom of the list you can tap on System Services for details of system service usage. The numbers can be reset at any time via Reset Statistics at the bottom of the screen. Watching those numbers for a period of time should identify the cause of the problem and be the first step toward the solution.

  • EXTREME LAG after latest update, unable to playback.

I've been rocking on Premiere CC for many months and ran the latest update on my way out of the studio Friday, coming in today on Monday I am unable to even edit anything due to extreme lag. I press play on a timeline and then it may be minutes before I get control of Premiere again and I see a frame every 15secs. All other apps run fine. What could be the issue and how can I fix it ASAP?

Apparently this is the issue I am running into.   http://forums.adobe.com/message/5931221
I am dropping back to 7.1 for now until I can figure out what else to do, not that this was a major update that I'm missing out on much.

  • Extreme Lag/Crash on New iPad iTunes App

when browsing the store, i get extreme lag on both page updating, touch ( when scrolling on screen, no response), and in a couple cases the iTunes App just flat out crashes to home screen

it does NOT do then when in the App Store, or any other app
crash logs show a couple Low Memory's with only "MobileStore " as largest process ( only app running )
as well as a couple crash's under " com.apple.Mobilestore failed to resume in time " and

    same with my iTouch 4
I have been getting many LowMemory and MobileStore crashes since 2012-04-29
I updated to iOS 5.1.1 today hoping it would fix the problem but it is just the same.
    I have 2.3GB spare.
most problems seem to be with podcast pages with multiple entries.
mobileStore has been painfully slow since they added the DOWNLOADED symbols.
I had difficulty getting iTunes to see the iTouch, even after updating to the latest version (10.6.1.7)
since 5.1 I have normally had to stop and start apple services before seeing the iTouch in iTunes.

  • Has anyone encountered drastic shorter battery life both on iphone 5 and ipad since updating to iOS 6.1.2? How can this problem be solved?

    Dear all,
I am new to this community even though I have been a Apple user for years, so please forgive me if this question is not in the right section.
Has anyone encountered drastic shorter battery life both on iphone 5 and ipad since updating to iOS 6.1.2? I've always been happy with these two products until the update - now the battery life is considerably shorter which is extremely frustrating.
How can this problem be solved? Is there any way to go back to the previous version?
    Thanks for your help.

If you update using iTunes the phone is first wiped clean, then the new OS is installed, and finally the backup is restored. After this finishes if you sync your music should be restored. Music is not in the backup, because it is already on your computer and duplicating it would use up a lot of hard disk space.
An OTA update just patches what has changed; it does not disturb content.

  • Uninstall Airport extreme 2008-004 update and go back to previous version

    Hello
This morning I installed the airport extreme 2008-004 update. Since then, I have not been able to access the internet when my VPN (Check Point) is active. I can access the internet if I "stop" the VPN. I use a Netgear WNR834M router and I have not had problems between this router and the AirBook before. Even when I am unable to access the internet, it appears that I am connected to the wireless network. I have stopped and started modem, router, and Mac several times, to no avail.
I had a good deal of trouble with a VPN before, and rather than attempting to fix this, I would like to just uninstall the update and restore what I had before. Is there an easy way to do this?
    Thank you very much

    Warren,
If you haven't yet, try these suggestions. They have worked for others.
*_Slow & Dropped Internet Connection After Airport Update_*
The suggestions below have recently helped others after a System or Airport update. Consider each topic separately, If one does not resolve your issue, move on to the next one.
    *Reset/Change DNS Settings*
    Launch Airport Utility.
    Select Airport device on left.
    Click "Manual Setup".
Select "Internet" from the toolbar above.
What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"? Try putting in these servers from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click "Update".
Next, on all Macs affected, launch System Prefs --> Network Prefs.
Select the service you usually connect with on the left (Airport or Ethernet).
    Then click, "Advanced...".
    Click the "DNS" tab.
What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"? Usually "10.0.1.1" will be listed first in gray. This refers back to the settings in the Airport Utility.
Nevertheless, it doesn't hurt to add the DNS servers noted above here as well.
    Click "OK" then click "Apply".
    Finally, reboot your Mac.
Now see if you have internet access all around.
    *Reset Airport Service*
Launch System Preferences --> Network Preferences.
Highlight the Airport Service on the left.
Click the Action menu (tiny gear button) in the lower left.
    Select "Make Service Inactive".
    Then select "Make Service Active".
    Click "Apply".
    *Delete & Add Airport Service*
Launch System Preferences --> Network Preferences.
Highlight the Airport Service on the left.
Click the “-” button in the lower left to remove the Airport Service.
Next, click the “+” button and add an Airport Service.
    Click “Apply”.
Note: Removing the AirPort interface resets your preferred AirPort networks.  You will need to add preferred networks again.
    *Reset Network/Airport Settings*
    1. Go to Macintosh HD --> Library --> Preferences --> SystemConfiguration Folder
Drag the following files to the desktop:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    com.apple.network.identification.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
    Restart your Mac.
    Go System Preferences --> Network.
From the “Location” menu select “Edit Locations”.
Click the “+” button and name it “Home” or “My Network”.
    Click “Done”.
Highlight “Airport” on the left, and verify that your network appears beside “Network Name”.
    Click “Apply”.
    Click “Advanced…”.
Click the “Airport” tab, and add your network to the “Preferred Networks”list.
Click “OK” and then click “Apply” once more.
Now see if your connectivity issues are resolved. Later you can Trash the .plist files you dragged to the Desktop.
    *Archive & Install*
As a last resort, an Archive & Install using your Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) installation DVD will usually resolve this issue. Then use Software Update to bring your system up to date. It appears that reapplying the recent updates in this condition, does not cause the problems to return.
Let us know if any of the above suggestions helped to resolve your connectivity issues.
    Cheers!

  • Since updating to ios 7.3 motion between everything is worse! Can it be helped?

Since updating to ios7.3 which was supposedly meant to improve motion transition, it has actually made it a million times worse.
Browsing, typing, moving between apps EVERYTHING lags, the screen drags and in lock screen the screen flickers and pixelates.
Is there anything I can do to help this? Should I take it to the apple store to replace my phone? It is honestly that bad.

    No such version exists, yet.

  • Extreme lag in CS5

I'm experiencing extreme lag while using photoshop lately. I'm running CS5 on a Mac OS X 10.5.8. My computer is about three years old but the hard drive was replaced about 6 months ago.
Basically what happens is that the program runs incredibly slow especially when opening files and saving files, no matter what the size. I have ample space on my hard drive and ps is not using the scratch disk for RAM or anything. I've also uninstalled or unchecked a variety of features that I don't use. This only started happening two days ago. I've installed all updates for Mac and PS but nothing has changed. I'm an art student so I'm using PS all the time, so it's become a real pain. Thanks for the help.

  • Wireless connections drops after AirPort Extreme 2007-001 Update

Hello, I am getting a lot of wireless connection drops since I installed the AirPort Extreme 2007-001 Update. Anyone has similar issue? Any fix?

Well, I was conneting to the University's wireless server (which is maintained and huge) flawlessly prior to the update. My friend has a macbook pro and didn't apply the update and he has no problem. I installed the update and since then I'm having a hard time connecting to ANY wireless server/router.
I came across the following, looks like a lot of other persons are having the same issue:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070202141024604
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070126190822382
Looks like my solution would be to perform an Archive & Install and to not reinstall the AE 2007-001 update.

  • Issues since update to yosemite

    Hello everyone,
I've been having all sorts of issues since updating to yosemite which I am struggling to fix on my macbook.
I've had the mac since 2010/11 and the first thing I noticed after updating to Yosemite was the fan constantly running from the moment I boot the machine and that the icons on my desktop were extremely slow to load up as are any files in the documents folder and finder.
Then watching videos on youtube etc were refusing to play fully. I have since updated to the latest flash player but it is still slow.
I ran the activity monitor and a kernel task file is operating at around 120% all the time.
I have read numerous posts on the internet to try to fix and have upgraded to the latest yosemite, reset the printers and many other things.
Now the trackpad is no longer working and not recognised and now the final straw for me is the keyboard refusing to be recognised at startup. I am currently using a wired mouse and bluetooth keyboard to get around these problems and everything is working fine with these but is a real pain.
Has anyone had any similar problems to the above and know how to sort as this is taking up way too much of my time.
    Thanks

What is the exact, complete text of the error message you get?

  • Iphone 4 bluetooth connectivity problems since updating to ios 5.01

My wife and I both have an Iphone 4 through verizon.  I updated my ios to 5.01.  Hers is still 4.3.10.  Since updating mine the bluetooth feature have gone crazy.  When I get in my truck (2008 Nissan Frontier) it just continually connects and disconnects with the built in blue tooth system in that vehicle.  I cannot make or take a call on the system it just keeps dropping the connection then re-connecting.  Funny thing is my wife's phone doesn't have this problem.  It connects and functions normally.
I wanted to just roll back ios 5.0.1 but I've found out you aren't allowed to do that.  Nissan has no updates for their bluetooth system either.
I have gone the extreme of completely wiping out my iphone and re-installing everything fresh and that has done nothing.  I have also tried completely deleting all the phone saved in the truck's system and re-setting them up and that too has done nothing to fix the problem.
Anyone have a suggestion?  I have to think that there is something in ios 5.0.1 that is messed up with bluetooth.

Interesting discussion. I too am having connection issues with an original iPad. I have an olde' linksys wrt54gs router with a Linksys RE1000 wireless extender (repeater). I can connect to the router just fine when I'm in range but can't use the repeater signal on this iPad only. Even when I'm right on top of it. One thing that may have helped is changing from WPA2 to simple WPA encryption in the routers settings. So far (crosses fingers), it's working ok.
