Extreme Lag While Editing Videos

Hello everyone, my first topic. On iMovie I get lots of lag while trying to edit videos of any length-EVERYTHING lags. In activity monitor the CPU usage sometimes even goes over 100%. Now the lag is not just when I try to put different videos together, but even when I only have the default slides things (the things you can select under the "T" button). I get lag with other apps as well, but iMovie is by far the worst.
If it helps, I'm using iMovie 09' version 8.0.6.

hard to tell form remote ...
slow-responding apps could have two main reasons:
• not enough room for 'breathing' on internal hard-drive; any MacOS-app 'swaps' hidden files while processing onto the internal drive (if partitioned: the MacOS partition). keep at last 15-25GBs free!
• 'wrong' installation, usually done by cloning an old/'alien' set-up from some backup onto a newer/different Mac.

  • IMovie lags when editing video

    Hey guys
So I just updated iMovie to iMovie '11 and no I have problems with editing videos. I had many clips and I imported them into the program and the whole thing was about 45 minutes long. I started editing and everything was absolutely fine, no problems at all, although it was that long. Now the movie is only 8(!!!) minutes long and now iMovie started lagging. I can still watch the video alright, but when I try to edit, I have to wait 3 secs till the curser moves and it also sometimes turns into the buisy sign ...
I dunno what to do, I need to get the video done by today so pleeeeeease help me!
    Thanks!

How much free space is there on your hard drive?

  • Video lags while editting

When I am editing footage and I would like to watch the video before I was to export as a movie, well when I do this I notice that the playback is extremely laggy. The audio comes out fine, but when I watch the video it jumps around ALOT, basically making it impossible to really find bugs before you export the video. A good amount of the time I make pretty long and large videos so this is becoming a big problem for me, especially having to wait for the videos to render.
Please help me make this lag go away. Any help is appreciated.
    -John Snow.

John, we'll need more information about your source media, the project settings you're using and the setup of your computer hardware. All these things are necessary to get an understanding of what might be the problem.
These issues tend to be because the person is using a different format source file to the project settings in Premiere and hasn't rendered the video.

  • IMovie lags when editing video and audio

I just bought iMovie yesterday from the Mac App Store. I recorded a DJ set and wanted to edit my Video with better quality audio that i recorded seperately. I find that when editing my video and audio (Matching up audio), there is alot of lag. Especially when scrolling through the video to drag the audio to a certain point to get the audio in sync. This is very frustrating and i feel i just got cheated paying for iMovie 11 when it cant even do a simple job. Please help me resolve this. Thank you!

    Hi
This is not easy in iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 -
What and how did You record the extra audio ? With what tool ?
To be able to keep audio in sync should be recorded with a device with TimeCode. Else it will be near to impossibly. Or extremely tedious even if FinalCut is used.
I would use FinalCut and keep original audio on track 1 and 2 - and the extra on track 3 and 4. Then Show Wave-form - then see if they can match up to each others.
But doing this in iMovie - is nearly impossibly.
IF AUDIO HAS - TimeCode - and there are no drop outs on video or audio then You should be able to exchange original audio with the extra recorded one in iMovie and even move it frame by frame (1/30 sec or 1/25 sec) - in FinalCut audio can be moved much more exact eg 1/100 sec or within a frame
(my miniDisc recorder - is FAR away from exact enough for this)

  • How do I take advantage of high frame rates while editing video in iMovie '09?

I have a GoPro Hero2 Hi-def video camera. It's capable of shooting up to 120 frames per second. How can I take advantage of that smooth slo-mo in iMovie '09?

    hi kyle,
sorry, but just to elaborate on your response a little while ago here:
    - i captured the 24PA footage using the advanced pulldown
    - i captured the 24P footage using no pulldown
    - i am editing in a 29.97 timeline now, as most of my footage was shot with 24P
please let me know your thoughts on how i should go about working with this footage!
    thanks!

  • Aperture 3 display wrong image while editing (video example)

Aperture 3, clean install, running on an upgraded Aperture 2 library. Whenever I make a change to a photo, Aperture displays the previous photo on the screen. It correctly edits the photo I have selected, it just displays the wrong image while doing so. Anyone else have this issue?

It seems you have a rare problem.
If the advice already given regarding upgrades fixes thing then all well and good.
If not you might try Matthew Bergsmas tip in:-

    This reads as follows:-
Go to the finder and move everything in these folders to the trash:
    Hard Drive/Library/Caches
    Hard Drive/System/Library/Caches
    Hard Drive/Users/Your username/Library/Caches
    Then reboot.

  • CPU Usage % While Editing Video

We get quite a few questions on why CPU usage is below 100% in some operations. This applies to both PrE and PrPro. Here is a THREAD (on PrPro, so there are some Pro-specific comments involved in the thread), and Harm Millaard has distilled the possibilities nicely in Reply #1.
Note: there is a link to the PrPro CS5 Benchmark. The site, and benchmark files and tests are not available for PrE, but when comparing hardware, the spreadsheet of the performance data from users' configurations, can tell one a lot, even if they are running PrE, and cannot actually participate in the benchmarking - the data in that spreadsheet is still VERY useful, when looking at various computer configurations.
Good luck, and hope that this helps others,
    Hunt

    1) Why video rendering is taking about 3h to render 2.2Gb wma file to make it HD 720p 29.97  with H.264 codec? CPU is loaded only 16-20%, have alot of RAM. Ou and tried both OpenCL and system only renderer no change in time needed or CPU load.
Because of the source material and the hardware. Wrong CPU, video card an not enough memory.
    2) Does Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL) means GPU usage mostly and system only - CPU usage?
Exporting is CPU based, the Radeon does not help at all. Tweakers Page - Exporting Style
    3) Why is so low CPU usage I thought that doing something big like video editing CPU should be fully loaded..., but here I see that it as I said is using only 16-20% and 2-3 cores aren't even in use.
Again because of the source material / codec and the hardware. Typical of ill-threaded codecs and the CPU.
    4) Is it ok for a recorded game video to be big like 2-5Gb after rendering in HD format, because I think if  films 44 min HD quality are 350-400MB  than game videos should be about the same.
44 min. of HD material can never be 350-400 MB of decent quality. 44 min of SD material (DVD) is already over 3 GB for decent quality. For HD, even on YouTube, count on at least 4-5 GB for 44 minutes or more.
    5) Maybe there is a better video capture app than Fraps, Overwolf, raptr GVR (well looked fine but I couldn't edit the video, Adobe element showed black screen and played audio) so that I could easelly edit it with adobe apps.
You can't capture with any of the software you mention, Capture is only possible with tape cased cameras over firewire.
Your AMD 8-core CPU is not suited for video editing, it is even slower than a 4-core Intel, because of the lacking SSE support. See Tweakers Page - What kind of PC to use? Your Radeon is pretty slow for editing, Tweakers Page - What video card to use? and the amount of memory is limited.

  • Reduce noise while editing video from Cannon 550D

    Hi Guys,
I recently purchased a Cannon 550D and with that a 50mm 1.4 USM lens for my short film that I would be filming because I was on a budget and this was one of the better Video Dslr's out der!
Anyways the video quality in meduim to good lighthing is amazing but when it comes down to low-light I see a lot of noise in the final product so wanted some help.
In low-light I make sure I dont go over ISO 400, well I could do IS0 200 but then the video image gets dark because of the lack of good light so ISO 400 is what I do and the Apperture is at 1.4 with the shutter speed at 1/30.
Couple of points I have noticed..
The video from the camera exports out in H.264 format but as you know editing with that codec is not very smooth,so I convert it to any one of the apple codecs (Apple pro res 4444 or Apple Proxy etc) and when I do that the picture quality goes bad, I mean the video becomes a shade darker and I suspect that it created some noise.
Can you help me with any workarounds?
    -A

    >I'm actually using embedded FireWire on the motherboard. I do have a PCI FireWire card, so that's worth a try as an alternative - I forgot about potential motherboard issues with embedded controlflers.
If you do that, it's worth noting what MOTU have to say about it:
    >MOTU recommends using strictly FireWire PCI/PCMCIA cards based on the Texas Instrument chipset.
    Very specifically, they say:
    >There's an incompatibility between the NEC chip found in some FireWire cards and the MOTU FireWire line of interface.
I have a Belkin PCMCIA Firewire card with a Texas chipset, and that works fine. I also have a card with a VIA chipset, and whilst it's okay, I get the impression that the Texas one is more stable - had at least one unexpected crash with the VIA one. One one desktop machine I actually bought a Firewire PCI card
after reading MOTU's advice(!) and with those, it's relatively easy to get the right chipset if you look carefully.

  • Lost audio while editing video

I lost my volume while ediing my video, I checked my volume and it wasn't muted, what else can it be?

This morning I replied to your follow up where you told of your success and overcoming your audio issues for your Premiere Elements project. But, after I replied to your news of success, I could not find your latest post nor mine in your thread.
I finally found them, but in the old 2013 thread of another. Here is the copy/paste from the 2013 thread to your thread here

I was trying different things and I went to tools to narration. I removed the mute audio before recording, then deleted the narration I previously did and then pressed undo, to bring it back and my audio returned on my video. Very strange but it worked. I wanted to thank you for taking the time to try to help me with this situation.I really appreciate it.

    Thanks for the update.
Later today I am going to try to get narration to cause the rest of the audio to fail. If I can, I will try what you said worked for you, that is,
I removed the mute audio before recording, then deleted the narration I previously did and then pressed undo, to bring it back and my audio returned on my video.
If this works, it may be the answer to this type of situation, and it will be a major contribution to the Premiere Elements community.
Congratulation on your success. Great job.
Best wishes to your daughter, her cousin, and you.

  • Premiere elements 12 lagging/running very slowly, impossible to edit videos

Hello, recently I've been experiencing very slow performance from premiere elements, this includes playback, rendering, opening the application and it constantly crashes. It was not that bad of a problem up until about a week ago when I started experiencing severe lagging while editing a video. I thought rendering the video would solve the problem because this has happened before and rendering has solved the problem, unfortunately this time and for the past few days, it hasn't helped at all.
Just some more info:  I use a 64 bit Gateway windows 7 laptop ( I apologize if I don't sound like I know what I'm talking about, I'm a video editor in high school, not a computer programmer)
Any help would be great, I edit videos for my school district's student news and my school's varsity sports teams so I need this problem fixed urgently.
    Thank You!

    jubgh
    You are communicating just fine.
Let us see if we can get to the core of the Premiere Elements 12 performance issues that you mentioned.
    1. Please remind me if you have installed the 12.1 Update for 12. If you have not installed it yet, please do so using an opened project's Help Menu/Update.
    2. You say that rendering helped previously. It could be that you have a pile up of preview files in the Adobe Premiere Elements Preview Files Folder in the Adobe Folder.
So let us explore that idea. Please go to that folder and see how much you have in it. (The default is Libraries/Documents/Adobe/Premiere Elements/12.0
Every time you do the Timeline rendering of a clip, the project automatically generates a preview file which is stored on the hard drive at the location that you designate in preferences.
Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disks and the VIdeo Previews choice. For SD project, the file is DV.AVI and for the HD project, the file is MPEG2.mpg (this is the case if the file rendered is a video or a still). Also check out the contents of the Media Cache Files Folder for pile ups of conformed audio files.
The exact location of preview files and conformed audio files (Media Cache) can be found under Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disks.
Also, go to Edit Menu/Preferences/Media and its Media Cache Database area and hit the Clean button to get rid of pile ups of conformed video files.
    3. In the quest for computer clean up, you can consider a run through with the free ccleaner product.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Please let us know what you found and if a clean up improved the performance of computer and Premiere Elements? Based on your reply, we can
    decide what next.
    Thank you.

  • Extreme lag in CS5

I'm experiencing extreme lag while using photoshop lately. I'm running CS5 on a Mac OS X 10.5.8. My computer is about three years old but the hard drive was replaced about 6 months ago.
Basically what happens is that the program runs incredibly slow especially when opening files and saving files, no matter what the size. I have ample space on my hard drive and ps is not using the scratch disk for RAM or anything. I've also uninstalled or unchecked a variety of features that I don't use. This only started happening two days ago. I've installed all updates for Mac and PS but nothing has changed. I'm an art student so I'm using PS all the time, so it's become a real pain. Thanks for the help.

  • Play through apple tv while editing? imovie using apple tv as live video monitor

HI. I have imovie HD running on my macbook pro and would like to play back the video i am editing directly through apple tv - while editing - without having to render first - . i know there would be latency - but that would be fine.... is there anyway to do this?????
    nic

    Hi
Are You using iMovie HD6 and want a live full screen video playback during editing ?
If so - that's what I've done all the time since iMovie 1.
BUT - to get this I use either
    • a miniDV tape Camera with DV-in - or
    • an A/D-box as Canopus ADVC-300
Then in iMovie I set - Playback trough Camera (in iM preferences)
    Camera/A/D-box connected via FireWire
To Camera or A/D-box I've connected a reference monitor - but any standard TV will do
A function lost in iMovie'08 to 11 - but also fully functional in FinalCut Express and Pro (How it is in FinalCut Pro X - I DO NOT KNOW - and doubt sincerely - as it feels much more like iMovie X Pro)

  • Video playback lagging while buffering

Having a problem with video in my iPad app. The video is loaded from a server into an FLVPlayback component. While the video is buffering, the video playback is extremely choppy (like 1-2 FPS), but as soon as the buffering is complete, it plays smoothly. So obviously, the buffering itself uses too many resources (I've tested both on an iPad Mini and an ancient iPad 1).
Is there any way to reduce the resource usage of the buffering process so I can start playing before buffering is complete? YouTube is able to buffer while playing the same devices, so it should be possible. The videos are pretty low quality and around 70mb, and the bufferTime is default, not that that should make a difference.

But that's not the problem. The problem is that I cannot play the video smoothly while buffering is going on. It doesn't matter how much has actually buffered. It's as if the iPad's CPU is too bogged down by the buffering to play video at the same time, but I don't understand why, since YouTube and other apps (not made by me) are obviously able to do it on the same iPads.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro to edit videos export process extremely slow!

    Hello,
I use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit videos, and until recently, it’s been working smoothly. The last few times I’ve tried to export, the process has been extremely slow—for example, yesterday the program told me it was going to take 22 hours to export a 527MB video.
My computer has an i7 processor and a decent video card (Radeon HD 7470) so I don’t think that’s the issue, but I can’t see it being the software since I had been successfully exporting videos until recently.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated—thanks!
