Extreme (n) not recognizing old Express in Airport Utility

I recently bought a new Airport Extreme (version 7.3.2).
I replaced it on the modem and set it up to configure the internet etc and it is working fine ( its set to i) Create a Wireless Network,ii) Allow this network to be extended as well as iii) the Radio Mode being set to 802.11n ( 802.11b/g compatible).
The problem is that the old Express can not be seen in the Utility when the Exrtreme is highlighted in the Utility. I repeatedly 'rescan' but the old express just is not visible.
However, if I turn off the new Extreme, the Airport Utility can then 'see' the old express's and then would allow me to set them up - (however I can't, as when I ask them to be a remote or to extend an existing network, they tell me that there is not WDS in operation - which is true seeing that the main Extreme is turned off.)
It's almost like the Extreme 'over-rides' the Express and vice versa in the Airport Utility - I can't see them all 'together'.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Paul

I believe that you have TWO wireless networks set up. One from the Extreme and the other on the Express. You cannot be connected to both, hence you cannot see them simultaneously under AirPort Utility. I would suggest you turn on the Extreme and write down all the settings under the Wireless heading. Via AirPort (not AirPort Utility) see if there is another wireless network that corresponds to the Express. If so, connect and you should be able to access the Express settings under AirPort Utility. Use that to Join an existing network (your Extreme, which should be still ON). Once that is accomplished and you restart, you will lose your Express wireless network, but be able to switch back your AirPort settings to your Extreme network.
Good luck!

  • AirPort Extreme does not see printer, hard drive, AirPort Express!

I just got an AirPort Extreme (802.11n), to replace my AirPort Express. I have a Brother 665CW wireless all-in-one printer, which had worked perfectly but now I cannot find it. I have also hooked my USB hard drive into the Extreme. I can see the hard drive in the AirPort Utility, but I don't know how to find it from my iBook. I'd also like to put the Express in another room to use the AirTunes feature. Unfortunately, almost nothing is working!
Here is how it's set up:
    Den:
    AirPort Extreme - hardwired to:
    - DSL modem
    - hard drive (via USB)
    Brother 665CW (wireless)
    Living Room:
    AirPort Express
Advice would be appreciated. I'm usually able to troubleshoot my problems, but documentation on this Extreme is really bad! Thanks!

I had problems adding Airport expresses using Airport Utility. However I found it worked fine if I used the manual set-up option and not the Assist me option.
Reset the airport express then, in manual set-up, set the express to 'join an airport network' add the airport network password and see if that works

Unfortunately, you are describing the symptoms of an AirPort Extreme with a failing (or failed) internal power supply.
As a last resort, try a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme as follows:
Power off the AirPort by pulling the power cord
    Wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Now try to configure the AirPort again.  If you continue to see the same symptoms as before, the AirPort will need to be replaced.

  • Airport Express and Airport Utility

I have an Airport Extreme base station and two Airport Express' connected to it.  Since upgrading to OS 10.8, and consequently Airport Utility 6.x, I no longer have the ability to edit, configure or manage teh Airport Express stations.  The note on the graphic on Airport Utility says " This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support."
When I download the older version of AirPort Utility (5.6), it won't intall, saying that the current OS won't support it.
How am I to manage my AirPort Express stations?

Both these methods will work to install the old version of AirPort Utility.

  • Unable to find Airport Express in Airport Utility

I am using an Airport Extreme hooked up to a cable modem an Ethernet Printer and a Dell PC. Wireless I have a MAC with the most current OS and a HP Laptop. Everything has worked great for months.
I am trying to add an Airport Express to hook to my TIVO and cannot seem to have it recognized in the Airport Utility. I have done every reset on the AX, but it only flashes yellow and I cannot see it on the left side of my Airport Utility. I am not very tech literate, so I might be overlooking something simple, but I do not think it shoudl be this difficult.

I am not familiar with setting it up with your TIVO, but it sounds like you are having trouble with having your Express join your network. You configure the Express via AirPort Utility. If you cannot see the Express when you open the AU app, click on the AirPort icon (of your Mac) on the upper menu. See if the Express network shows up there. If so, log into that network and open AU again to configure it. If that does not work, get an ethernet cable and connect the Express to your computer. If the Express still does not show up on AU, do a hard reset and try again. Once in AU, you can configure it to try and join or extend your network.

  • How do I prevent other Mac users from changing my Airport Extreme Network Name and Password within the Airport Utility?

How do I prevent other Mac users from changing my Airport Extreme Network Name and Password within the Airport Utility?  My company is using an Airport Extreme in our office now and I want to prevent other employees from messing with the network/settings.  Is there a way to place a password on the settings to allow only the admin to access the network name and password?

Hi - you have will have to change the device passwords on all the base stations and then don't give them to anyone except the administrators and tell them not to save them on their computers that use the older versions of the Airport Utility - for the newer versions like the mobile apps, as soon as you enter the pasword it is saved and is visible in the advanced pane along with the network password - so if anyone gets a hold of your iPad or iPhone, they can edit the whole network - I have this same issue with my networks in the office and it is inconvenient but doable - I hope this helps

  • Cannot See Airport Express in Airport Utility

I've been browsing the other topics, but don't see one with my exact problems.
I got an Airport Express for Christmas and was able to get it to work on my parents network; but now that I'm at home, I can't get it to even show in the Airport Utility. I've reset the AX by holding down the button for over a second. I've set my Airport Extreme to be extendable and to be n/g compatible.
I've seen advice like making the name and pass match the base station, but I can't even get to a point where I can see it...
    Advice?
    Thanks,
    Chris

I had similar problems and was able to resolve my issue like Simon. I think you need to hard reset your Airport Extreme base station first, then open Airport Utility and reconfigure it using WAP2 encryption. Then hard reset your Airport Express (by the way, you need to unplug it, push the reset button using a paper clip and keep holding it down while plugging it back and wait until it flashes green 4 times, then release) then you should be able to see your airport express in Airport Utility, and reconfigure it to use WAP2 (I used the same password for both base stations) and, at least in my case, voila! all lights turned green and worked. Good Luck,
    Ron

  • I am trying to setup my new time capsule but it is not working. after entering the airport utility and locating the TC, after I tell the program to continue, the unit just disappear and the setup menu says there is an error. Any idea of what is happening?

I am trying to setup my new time capsule but it is not working. after entering the airport utility and locating the TC, after I tell the program to continue, the unit just disappear from the menu and the setup menu says there is an error. I tried using the wireless connection, and also the cable, but none worked. Any idea of what could be happening?

What are you setting it up as.. join wireless network .. the very worst setup, it will disappear.. reboot the whole network in order modem. router TC.. clients and it will likely reappear.
Tell us what network setup you are using..
If you setup with cable to a computer completely isolated from the network with TC also isolated.. finish the setup of everything you want. .before update.. then plug it into the network. .then restart everything in correct order.. it will work most of the time.

  • Is there a capability to save/export the time capsule settings file when using the iphone/ipad airport utility. the "file" button does not exist on the latest airport utility app.

is there a capability to save/export the new airport 2TB time capsule settings file when using the iphone/ipad airport utility. set-up wasn't a problem but the "file" button does not exist on the latest airport utility app v6.3 to save the configuration file.

the "file" button does not exist on the latest airport utility app v6.3 to save the configuration file.
Sounds like you are a bit confused with version numbers.
Latest AirPort Utility version for the iPhone / iPad is 1.3.3.  There is no option or capability to export/import settings on the iOS version(s) of AirPort Utility.....although you could take a series of screen shots and save them for future reference.
AirPort Utility 6.3.x is found on a Mac.....not on iPhone / iPad. Export and Import options are found under the File menu in 6.3.x.

  • Airport Express and Airport Utility won't communicate

    Hi,
I have this strange problem that whenever I setup the configurations for my Airport Express in Airport Utility I get an error message saying that the unit and it's network capabilities is temporarily uavailable. I get this message everytime and no matter what changes I whish to make.
Do anyone have any idea about what I should do?

This usually can happen if you have weak signal strength. What happens if the APX and your computer are close to each other?

  • Mac not recognizing AP Express after AP Extreme password change...

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and a Airport Express as an extender. I went on Airport Utility and changed my wireless password. Since then my macbook pro is unable to recognize my Airport Express and the yellow light is flashing on the unit itself. I am still connected to the internet through the Extreme Base Station but am no longer picking up the express's signal and there is no output. Any suggestions? Very frustrating

    Welcome to the discussion area.
I suggest that you temporarily, move the AirPort Express close to your computer and connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express to see if AirPort Utility can communicate to the Express that way.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
You will need to enter the same wireless network password that you gave to the AirPort Extreme so the Express will be able to join the wireless network.
Click Update to save your changes and move the Express back to the desired location.

  • Reset airport  extreme ac not finding old extreme 802.11n

Have supplanted an Airport Extreme 802.11n with an Airport Extreme 802.11ac.
I have performed a hard reset on the .11n.
I have configured the .11ac to functionally duplicate the network as managed by the .11n.  Uses the same network ID as before. Works fine.
I now want to extend my net using the .11n, but it is not visible to the Airport Utility. In particular it does not show under the "Other Wi-Fi Devices" drop-down.
Any ideas on how I might recycle my .11n to do as I want?

It is always a good idea to perform a Factory Default Reset whenever you want to re-purpose an AirPort router, since a "Hard Reset" may not fully erase the older settings stored on the device.
Power off the older AirPort for a minute
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding for an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Restart your 802.11ac AirPort and the Mac computer, then check to see if AirPort Utility will find the older AirPort so that you can set it up again.
If you have an iPhone or iPad handy, those devices actually work better than AirPort Utility on a Mavericks Mac, so you might want to try the setup that way.

  • Extending the range of my Extreme n Network with an Express n Airport

    Hello,
I've been reading some of the questions but couldn't find my specific situation, so here I am posting again. Sorry for the double-post.
I currently have an AEBS 802.11n acting as my main base station and connected to our DSL modem. In a different room across the house, I have an Airport Express 802.11n which is joined to the network (not extending), and there is a printer connected to it via USB.
I tried to extend the range of my network, but since I'm using it in dual mode (2.4 & 5GHz), the Express gave me an error of "operation not supported...", or something similar, so I just gave up and instead of extending the network to solidify its strength, I just added the device as a client and hooked up the printer to it - which is working fine.
Another reason why I'd like to extend the range of the network is because I spend most of the time in the "remote" room, which is 3 rooms away from the AEBS, so I'm not receiving a very strong signal.
I thought of running an Ethernet cable from the AEBS to the Express, but that would require me to crawl in the attic... not worth the trouble because it's not my home, and I'll be moving out some day.
I'll also add that I'm somewhat tech-savvy, but wireless networks have always been my weak link (no pun intended).
How should I set up my equipment in order to get this accomplished?
    Thanks!

Here's the general step by step for setting up the "extend" feature on the AirPort Express.
Because you have a dual band Extreme, you may need to assign different names for the main and guest networks to keep things straight. In AirPort Utility - Manual Setup under the Wireless tab, click on the "Options" button to do this.
The "main" network is setup as 802.11n 5 GHz by default, so that is what the Express will "extend". If you have "b" or "g" devices at your remote location, you will need to change the Radio Mode for the main network to a compatible setting like 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible).
    _On the AirPort Extreme:_
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons
Wireless Mode should be "Create a wireless network"
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Update to save settings
    _On the AirPort Express(es):_
Open AirPort Utility, Click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode should be set to "Extend a wireless network". If you don't see this choice, hold down the "option" key when you click on the selection box
When you select "Extend.." your wireless network created by the TC will appear as a choice to extend. Select the main network and enter the wireless password.
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
    Update to save settings.
Whenever you plug the Express in, it will automatically "extend" the main wireless network from the Base Station. Your computer will automatically connect to the device with the strongest signal, so if you are near one of the Express devices, you will be connecting at that point.
The ethernet port on the Express is also "live" in this setup so you could connect an ethernet device to the Express if you wish.
For more info on the "extend" feature, refer to the Designing AirPort Networks guide, pages 43-44.

  • Airport Express not showing up in my Airport Utility

So my network is based on an Airport Extreme, which I just bought. The network works fine. I've had an Airport Express until now, which I want to use to play music off of my Bose system. I've done a hard reset to reset all of the settings so that I could set it up as an extension of my new network. However, when I go into the Airport utility, only my Extreme shows up. I've reset the Express over 5 times, but it doesn't seem to want to pick up. Any ideas on what I should do?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
First my apologies, I'm not so good at English.
I've the same problem. I've discovered the problem shows up every time I close the Macbook Pro (goes in sleep-mode).
    Network configuration :
Airport Extreme with 2 airdisks, Aiport Express, iMac intel, Macbook Pro, Mac mini intel, separated wired router. The 2 airdisks are used in 'bridged' mode.
All the network devices are configured manually (manual IP address, not DHCP)
Every time i close the upper case of my Macbook Pro, the Airport Express disappears, I can't see him in the Airport config. program, and the airtunes doesn't work anymore.
But an IP ping is ok, there is no packet loss, so he is still active in the network.
The only way to get it back at work is resetting the Airport express or pull it out of the wall-outlet and back in, AND rebooting my Macbook Pro.
So this is very strange, isn't it?
A few months ago there was a simular bug : closing the Macbook Pro causes some problems with the airdisks, they disappear also from the network. This problem is solved now.
