Extreme Network Problem - Ethernet versus Airport

I will try to make this problem/question simple.
I have a home network with various computers around the house. I have an Ethernet switch in the closet, and various nodes running throughout the house to various rooms.
Also attached to my switch is a Time Capsule, which is used to create a wireless network and distribute DHCP addresses to other wireless computers in the house.
I also have an Airport Extreme in my home office that is configured, via Airport Utility, to extend the Time Capsule network, and is on the home network wirelessly. In other words, the Extreme is not hard-wired to the network with an Ethernet cable.
I have two Ethernet printers connected to the Extreme in my home office (by Ethernet cable), which I wish to use as network printers throughout the house.
In my home office, my iMac is hard wired to Ethernet, but also has the capability for an airport connection. I prefer, of course, to use the Ethernet, for speed reasons.
Here is my problem/question: In my home office, I can only print to the two Ethernet printers connected to the Extreme if my iMac is on the home network via its Airport setting (in other words, Airport is above Ethernet in the network connections order). In that case, the printers print fine.
If, however, I switch the iMac’s network connection to Ethernet (by setting the service order to put Ethernet above Airport), I cannot print to the two Ethernet printers connected to the Extreme - I get caught in the “attempting to connect to host...” mode.
First question: Why is this? The Ethernet and Airport network settings appear the same, except for the computer’s IP address (i.e., the subnet and router addresses are the same on Ethernet as on Airport). Seems to me that if the printers are on the network, they are on the network.
Second question: Even if I am on Ethernet (and therefore cannot print to the printers attached to the Extreme), the two printers attached to the Extreme do show up in the Print & Fax window. In other words, I can select them and add them as printers, but I just can’t then print to them.
What am I missing here? Shouldn’t I be able to print from the iMac when it is on the network via Ethernet? If not, why not?
I can always, of course (I guess), attach the Extreme to the network via an Ethernet cable from its WAN port to avoid the problem. But that would require running a LONG Ethernet cable, drilling holes in the top of my desk and bottom of a bookcase, etc., and I don’t wish to do that.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks..

Yes, it’s Verizon FiOS coming into the modem, the modem to the switch. Make and model unknown, but don’t see how that would be an issue here.
I am trying to ascertain, whether or not, your entire network is on the same subnet. If you are using an Ethernet switch and not an Internet router (with a built-in Ethernet switch) directly connected to the modem, then your basic network will not work ... as the modem is only expecting a single device to be connected to it.
If you had the TC directly connected to the modem, and then, the Ethernet switch connected to one of the TC's LAN ports to provide additional network nodes throughout the house this would be workable.

  • Extend Airport Extreme Network via Ethernet to Airport Express

I am trying to extend a gen 4 Airport Extreme by hardwiring ethernet to a 2nd gen Airport Express and will add a second Airport Express if I can get the first one to work.  I have a large network with a 24 port switch and aiport utility 6.3.2 (most recent as of this date)
    First question:
When expanding my network using the hardwired Airport Express can I name the new network anything I want or should it be exactly the same as the Extreme Network.  I would prefer to name it differently so I can keep track of which network my devices are acturally joining but I will be happy simply to get this to work either way.
    Second question:
After repeated attempts to configure my hardwired Aiport Extreme, I get the following yellow status error:
    Yellow Internet Connetion
    Yellow No DNS Servers
    Yellow Conflicting DHCP Range
    Observation:
Many of the suggestions here and the link posted in a previous post are not based upon the most recent Airport Untility software so that may contribute to my lack of success so far.  I am using the most recent version.

Even though the express was hardwired to the extreme during the set up process it was choosing to "extend" the 5 ghz network which I have activated on my extreme.  I assume this is okay.  It seems to be.  It offered me no other option during the set up.
Both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands will be extended if the extending device supports dual bands.
I configured the express by plugging it directly into the LAN port of the Extreme.  Once configure, I plugged the express into my 24 port switch. It worked.
That's a good way to do things. If the Express works when connected directly to the Extreme, and doesn't when you connect it elsewhere on the network, then you know that you have a wiring or switch issue somewhere.
I choose to keep the express network name and base station name the same as those on the extreme.  They worked.  Since I really want to keep track of which network I am logged into, I later changed both the network name and the base station name for the express and it seems to all work under the new names.
Either will work, as long as you don't mind logging on and off of networks to switch. Most users prefer to have one "big" network. Then, they can walk a laptop from one area to another, stay on the same network and the Mac will automatically switch to pick up the strongest signal from the closest access point.
I activated the 5 ghz on the newly configured and newly named express.  It seems to work.
    As it should.
While configuing the express I got the error message metioned above a couple times.  I kept trying the same procdure with out changeing anything and eventually it worked.
I can't duplicate that issue, but glad that things worked after a few tries.
Since my AppleTV on the second floor has difficulties connecting with the extreme, I am thinking of plugging it in to the express directly.  How do you feel about this?  WOuld I be better off running another separate ethernet wire off the switch?
Always the best plan to connect any network devices using Ethernet if you can. The best networks are the ones with an Ethernet "backbone".  You can connect the Apple TV to the Express or the switch, whichever is easier. Personally, I prefer to connect devices to a switch if possible just to keep things simpler and make any troubleshooting easier.
This whole system with an extreme, 3 expresses, 3 appletvs, 12-14 cameras, a 24 port switch and up to 50 devices on the network at one time (computers, phones, ipads, etc, etc) works reasonably well considering the demands I put on it.
That's quite a home network. Glad that things are working. I am sure that you notice better wireless performance now with the two AirPort Express devices wired into the Ethernet backbone.
If we could get more users to set up their networks this way, most of the complaints that we get about slow wireless, intermittent connections, etc would go away.
It's not easy to run the Ethernet cable for some users, but I have yet to hear from the first user who ever regretted doing it.

  • Extend airport extreme network via ethernet to airport express (special case)

This question has been asked many times on the forum, and answered many times, but I have a special case and would like to know if it can be made to work.
As you can see, the issue is that the LAN port of the Extreme is not connected back to the switch, I've only connected the WAN port of the Extreme to the switch.  Therefore the express doesn't get an IP over the CAT5e cable coming from the switch, and will only extend wirelessly.  The reason I don't make that connection is because the switch/modem is in the basement, the Extreme is on the second floor, the express is on the far side of the first floor, and I don't want to run another cable through the house.
First question is, can the given topology be made to work?
If the answer is no, then would it work to put an additional switch on the second floor like the following?
    Thanks!

That is exactly what I am saying.
Remember, the modem has only one Internet IP address that it can deliver to a router.  It is the router that assigns "local" IP addresses your other devices to "share" the Internet connection.
If you connect the Modem to the Switch, then it will be matter of chance as to which device......the AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express will get the valid IP address.  The "other" AirPort will not be able to connect to the network.
Bottom line.....if you have a simple modem, as you have pictured, then it must connect directly to the WAN port on the "main" AirPort router. Something like this, for example:

  • How to extend the range of my Airport Extreme network by adding an Airport Express

How to extend the range of my Airport Extreme network by adding an Airport Express?

You have to make sure that the AirPort Express is in Factory Default Settings. If it is straight out of the box, it is ready to be configured.
The instructions that I will provide are for using AirPort Utility 6.0, which you have.
Locate the Express in the same room as the AirPort Extreme for the configuration. Power it up and allow a full minute for the Express to display a blinking amber light.
Make sure that the wireless is turned on your Mac
Open AirPort Utility 6.0 and look at the small rectangle in the upper left hand corner of the display. It should now read something like "Other AirPort Base Stations (1)"
Click on the rectangle, and then click on the AirPort Express xxxxxx listing
AirPort Utility will take a minute or two to analyze the settings on your network and then suggest that  the Express be configured to "Extend" your wireless network.
Edit the Base Station name to your liking, then click Next in the lower right hand corner
Allow a full minute or two let AirPort Utility do its work
When you see Setup Complete, click Done at the lower right of the window.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is approximately half way between the AirPort Extreme and the area that needs more wireless coverage.
    You should be in business.

  • Extending wireless network through ethernet using airport express

I am running a wireless network using a time capsule. When attempting to setup an airport express, the utility first could not find the IP address. I went back and set the express to act as a bridge. It seemed to work correctly, however the express is not broadcasting a wireless signal or my Mac cannot see it. i have used the Utility for all of the setup. Both the time capsule and the express are new. The mac is running os10.5.8.

+Do I need to turn of NAT for the roaming network to work?+
If your AirPort Extreme is connected to a modem (only one ethernet port on the device), then you need to configure the AirPort Extreme to handle both DHCP and NAT. This will be done for you automatically when you do the following:
Open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
If your AirPort Extreme is connected to a gateway (a combination modem and router that will have 3-4 ethernet ports), then you need to setup the AirPort Extreme as a "bridge"
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
All of your other devices...Time Capsule, AirPort Express must be configured as follows:
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme network
Radio Mode = Your choice, but should be similar to the AirPort Extreme
    Channel = Automatic*
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme
Wireless Password = Same password as AirPort Extreme
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Update to save settings
    * With a lot of devices, you may want to set the Channel manually. Set up separate channels for each device and keep the channels as far apart as possible.

  • Wireless Networks Problems with Xbox - Airport express

    Hi Hope someone can help
    Wireless setup & Hardware
I have a PC running XP and the wireless Router is connected directly with RJ45 cable into the Netgear DG834GT
I have a iMac G5 which has no problems getting onto the wireless network
I have a Airport Express unit where all my music is streamed into another room and that works fine, but my problem is I cannot get the xbox I have just purchased to work ie (xbox Live etc) which is attached with RJ45 cable direct to Airport Express.
I have installed lastest firmware for all devices, ie Airport Express, DG834GT
My Wireless Security settings have been set to WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi protected access pre shared key) I must admit I tried to set WEP security at first but had no Luck, so I don't know if I've done right thing
When I look at attached devices on router software it shows me correctly that there are 3 computers on network I can view IP address and MAC address
My Question is should the Xbox work ok with my setup?
Should the Xbox not get all network infomation automatic
Do I need to manual set the xbox with Network settings?
Or am I missing something, any help would be Great

    Hello,
I don't know if this link will help but, give it a shot. I have the same setup as you but, I have a PS2 instead. I believe you have to manually adjust some settings on the XBox.

  • Weird network problem: Ethernet link going down for few seconds, and up again

    Hi,
this problem is driving me nuts for weeks now, and I've not had any success with solving it myself, so I hope someone might have a clue...
A few weeks ago, maybe 2 months, when downloading VOD content from iTunes, the download suddeny stopped after a while, saying that there is a problem with my network connection. I can then resume the download until the next connection drop occurs. iTunes was and still is the only app that makes the problem noticeable (FTP, browsing, Mac App Store etc. are working fine), however, as this also affects iDevice firmware downloads and basically everything I download via iTunes, the problem started to really annoy me. I'm not sure, but the problem might have been introduced after upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion/10.8, which I needed for Logic X.
    So here is what happens:
I have an iMac12,2, Mid 2011, 27inch, i5 2.7GHz, 16GB RAM, 256GB Apple SSD + 1TB HDD. When using ethernet, the iMac randomly loses its link to the network. My router is a FRITZ!Box 7390 (german make). There are no switches between my iMac and the router. When that happens while running ping, this is how it looks like:
    64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=3558 ttl=64 time=0.542 ms
    64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=3559 ttl=64 time=0.424 ms
ping: sendto: No route to host
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 3560
ping: sendto: No route to host
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 3561
ping: sendto: No route to host
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 3562
ping: sendto: No route to host
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 3563
ping: sendto: No route to host
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 3564
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 3565
    64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=3566 ttl=64 time=0.508 ms
    64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=3567 ttl=64 time=0.493 ms
And this is what the logfile contains at the same time:
    28.10.13 21:36:35,000 kernel[0]: AppleBCM5701Ethernet [en4]: Link down (womp disabled, proxy idle)
    28.10.13 21:36:37,099 configd[18]: network changed: v4(en4-:192.168.1.188) DNS- Proxy-
    28.10.13 21:36:37,106 configd[18]: network changed: Proxy
28.10.13 21:36:37,112 netbiosd[12000]: network_reachability_changed : network is not reachable, netbiosd is shutting down
    28.10.13 21:36:40,000 kernel[0]: Ethernet [AppleBCM5701Ethernet]: Link up on en4, 1-Gigabit, Full-duplex, Symmetric flow-control, Debug [796d,0323,0de1,0300,cde1,3800]
    28.10.13 21:36:40,237 configd[18]: network changed: Proxy
    28.10.13 21:36:42,544 configd[18]: network changed: v4(en4+:192.168.1.188) DNS+ Proxy+ SMB
So the ethernet interface loses the link for a few seconds, and gets back up again. It's not long enough to affect average TCP connections, however it is long enough to completely screw iTunes.
    What I've tried:
    - changed all cables (save the one that's going from the ethernet outlet on my room's wall to the server/router room, as it's not replaceable (running within a wall) and I really don't know why it should become faulty offhandedly)
    - cycled ethernet ports at the router to make sure they're not faulty
    - ping'd the router from different computers on all its ethernet ports, all working fine
    - connected my iMac to router via wifi, all working fine
    - bought a Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter to make sure onboard ethernet card isn't faulty: problem still there
    - installed 10.9 over 10.8.5, problem still there
What I didn't check is what happens when ping'ing the router via my cables, but from another computer, as I don't have one. I will try to borrow a MacBook and check that.
So I figured it must be a local problem, as the network infrastructure itself works nicely and all cables seem to be sound. It is also not a hardware issue, as the problem occurs both with the onboard NIC and the Thunderbolt NIC. What mystifies me is that it doesn't happen when using Wi-Fi (but switching to that is not an option - it's too slow).
I tried to use both DHCP and fixed IP addresses, different IP ranges, made sure that static IPs don't collide with the router's DHCP range, updated the router firmware, updated the firmware of all Airport Express and Time Capsules I've got in my network (just to be sure), switched all energy saving settings to "Never" (as it has been suggested here from time to time), but nothing helped ... and I don't know what else to check.
I hope that someone has an idea of what's happening here!
    Thanks in advance!

It looks like hooking an ethernet switch between my iMac and the router did the trick. I didn't get any timeouts after I did that. It must have been a really weird incompatibility between my iMac and the router. Still have to see if iTunes gets through without losing the connection, I hope I'll be able to check that tomorrow night. I'll report back.
So maybe try just hooking another ethernet switch between your mac and the other side. It might actually help!

  • Extending a (non-Apple) Wireless Network through Ethernet with AirPort Expr

I have two Airport Express base stations and a Linksys Wireless Router/Modem - I want the AE's to extend the network in locations the Linksys can't reach.
I'm currently doing this through having the AE's set to "Create a wireless network" and set to "Bridge mode", they have the same SSID and WPA password as the Linksys.
Despite this, when I walk from one to the other, my laptop can't seamlessly hop from one to the other. I have to turn off AirPort and search again.
Can anyone help make this work?

Power everything down and then start the modem first and let it run a few moments, then start the Linksys the same way, your AirPort Express next, etc., and finally your computers.
If no luck, you might try matching up with WPA2 Personal. That is a more compatible setting among routers.
I assume that you are using the exact same Radio Mode on all devices. For example, 802.11 b/g
Sometimes security settings are just not compatible between different manufacturers. That may be the case here if you continue to experience problems. I've had the same problem that you have now in the past except with a Netgear router and the AirPort Express. The only way I could solve it was to replace the Netgear with an AirPort Extreme.

  • 802.1x over ethernet and airport impossible together ??

I am connected to my University network (and to the internet) through a 802.1x network (Through Ethernet, not Airport).
I have an iPod Touch with which I want to connect to the Internet.
I went under Sharing, and created a Wireless network sharing the Ethernet internet. I was able to connect my Mac WITHOUT 802.1x to the internet for some time (authorised for a short time by the university) and was able to access the Wifi network and the internet with the iPod Touch.
However, as soon as I connect to the 802.1x network, Airport dismisses it's network, it just disappears ...
Why does it do that, can I prevent it and if not, is there any alternative for my problem ?

Yeah, I was just going on/hoping for... the 802.1x likeness.
    Have you repaired Permissions lately?
Might try trashing these files & reboot...
    /Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
... of course you dont have to trash them, you can just move them to the desktop to drag back if it doesn't work.

  • Can I extend my network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable? I have CAT5 cable throughout my house but have a wireless network w/ 3 airport expresses

Can I extend my wireless network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable?  I have a wireless network with 3 airport expresses and 1 airport extreme functioning as the base station. I have CAT5 throughout my house.

    Welcome to the discussions, mib88!
Can I extend the network a second time with another Airport Express...
The short answer would be no. If you want more details, please continue to the next paragraph.
Apple's "extend a wireless network" works just like the hub and spokes of a wheel. Your main hub is either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme and the AirPort Express is at the end of a spoke. You can add more devices at the ends of other spokes, but these devices will communicate directly to the hub, not to another device at the end of a spoke.
Apple does offer an option which is is known as a "static WDS", which can consist of a "main", "relay" and "remote" device. The problem here is that this type of setup has two huge drawbacks:
    1) All of your faster "n" devices will drop down to much slower "g" speeds
    2) The bandwidth or speed capability on the network will drop down to only 25% of the original bandwidth with a "main", "relay" and "remote" on the network.
Don't think you want this on your network. Your best option is to connect the new AirPort Express to the "hub" using an ethernet connection. If you can't run the ethernet cable, take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by sending the ethernet signal over the AC powerline in your home.

  • Problems extending Airport Extreme network

I am sure this must have been covered but I can't find it here, and feel a bit foolish asking this, but I bought a new AE base station (the new flat 'n' variety).
I set up my network fine (I have a Netgear wireless router connected to MacPro with AE card). I also have (1) an older flying saucer AE base station and (2) an Airport Express. I want to boost my signal so the whole house can get a good signal. However, when I try to add 1 or 2 I am told it can't be done because "this computer does not have an Airport Extreme card" (it does!). I have obviously done something wrong because 1 and 2 show up in the network as if they are networks (they have the default names like "Apple Network e371b8" but obviously they have no Internet access. I have tried this several ways today and failed every time. Should I give 1 and 2 the same name as the main network so only a single name shows up in the network list??
Can someone who has successfully extended their network using the new style AE + older flying saucer AE +/- Express please tell me what settings they used?
    Cheers
    Drew

Do NOT install AirPort 802.11n Firmware 7.1
This Firmware 7.1 update for AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n should definitely NOT be installed.
    Here was my problem:
I used AirPort Utility 5.1 to install the update. It is automatic - launch the utility and it asks if you want to install the update. I said yes because I had problems getting two AirPort n base stations networking together to extend my range (I gave up finally and just used an AirPort Express to extend the range).
After the firmware update, some sites would not load at all (www.nytimes.com) and others took forever to load. And worse, I could not send any email from any of my IMAP accounts. It seemed to be a DNS problem.
I have two 802.11n AirPorts, so I finally went back to the other one (7.0) and everything worked fine. The Apple tech support guy offered to replace my broken (7.1) AirPort.
Foolishly, I wanted to make sure the problem was actually with the 7.1 update and not the AirPort itself. So I updated my second 802.11n base station with 7.1. And it casued the exact same problem (some sites not loading, no outgoing email).
The Apple tech (at this point I was speaking with a wireless specialist) put me on hold to test a few of his AirPorts to see if he could revert back to firmware 7.0 or (ii) install a clean version of 7.1 (in case the version on my drive was corrupted).
Unfotunately neither option was possible, which is a design flaw in AirPort Utility.
Apple is sending me two new AirPorts in 1-2 days, which is great service, but I will not be installing firmware update 7.1 again. Fool me once...

  • PROBLEM: Trying 2 add an AIRPORT EXPRESS to an already existing AIRPORT EXTREME network

I'm trying 2 add an AIRPORT EXPRESS to an already existing AIRPORT EXTREME network in my home.
I see the EXPRESS in ARPT UTILITY but when I click on "CONTINUE" or "MANUAL", the only option I'm given is to SWITCH networks, which I do not want to do.
I am using a MACBOOK PRO (MAC OS X 10.6.8)
Can someone offer me help with this?
    Thanks!

Hi, I have a similiar setup.  When you click onto the express, and it asks you to switch networks, it's not actually asking you to "change" networks.  It's just actually switching to the xpress.  When the xpress comes up, you'll input the name of your existing network, which you set up and named for the extreme.  You'll have to change the extreme to "participate in a network", which is what you'll also do for the xpress.  In the extreme under the WDS tab, you'll input the wds mode as "wds main".  And then put a check mark in the "allow wireless clients".  Where it says wds remotes, you'll input the the airport id's for the xpress's.  In each of the xpress's, you'll set up as participating in a wds network.  In the xpress's, under the wds tab, you'll set the wds mode to remote, and check
mark in the allow wireless clients.  You'll have to input the airport id of the extreme in the wds main block.  Under the internet icon on top, in internet conect tab for connect using: airport (wds), connect sharing: off (bridge mode).
Remember to insure that the express's show the same channel as the extreme, if you're using 802.11n (80211b/g compatible).  Of course the security that you decide to use should also be the same.
