Extreme slow start up, even after reinstallation of OS

My MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) started to take several minutes to start up. The desktop comes up but the menus and dock are completely frozen for 3-5 minutes. All I can do is move around the pointer. After a long long wait, everything is back to normal and the computer works just fine.
After freeing up space, turning of start-up applications, verifying the disk with Disk utility, SMART Utility etc without improvement (disk ok),  I erased the disk completely and reinstalled OS X (version 10.6.8) from original CD. I had to try this 6 times before installation was successful, it just kept freezing in the middle of the installation so I had to start from the beginning erasing the disk. Finally the installation was successful but the same problem persists with 5 minutes frozen desktop after start-up. After that the computer works perfectly. Anybody had a similar experience?

Since a brand new, clean OS install is not working right, you should verify there is no hardware issue.
Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.5 to 10.6.7, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Applications Install Disc 2 and was included with your computer.

If yours shipped with 10.6.8 follow the instructions on the link.

  • Hello, I have a macbook pro late 2011 15 inch with 4 gb ram. My macbook runs extremely slow when logging in after waking up from sleep, locking up and I am unable to use the keyboard. Is there a fix?

My macbook runs extremely slow when logging in after waking up from sleep, locking up and I am unable to use the keyboard. Furthermore, when just using safari to watch streaming television, my computer gets really slow, and locks up, and the dock appears blank and I sit here frustrated. Anytime i wake up my computer, my keys don't respond and I've waited at most 3 minutes untill i can type in my password. Even sometimes when i type in my password and hit enter, it takes forever to open up my mac. I have barely used any storage in my macbook, since i only use it for college, and I have run clamscan wiht no viruses showing... Any ideas?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • TS3274 Extremely Slow Starting Up

I have an iPad 2nd Generation that is extremely slow starting up.  I have made sure that all apps are closed and all software is up to date.  Any ideas?

Before you do anything else backup your computer.
Next run Apple Hardware Test 3x back to back in extended mode. If any errors appear this confirms a hardware issue and a repair is necessar. Please post back after running AHD in extended mode 3x back to back.

When I click PDF file, the file does not open and  installation software for creative suite automatically begin to start. Even after re-installation of creative suite 5.5, only acrobat reader dose not work and the same phenomena occurs.

Did you ever install Acrobat? It is not installed automatically with CS, but requires an extra installation step.

  • App will not open even after reinstallation

How do I resolve this?  Reinstalled multiple times, tried shuttting iPad down, is it a settings issue??  Running iOS 5.1.1 still, is that the issue?

I'm sorry to hear that you have trouble running
PS Touch.  Please try to install via iTunes. This normaly helps.

  • Extremely slow working Satellite 1800 after OS reinstallation

I bought a second hand Satellite 1800. I collected all the drivers from the producers website, but when I formatted the HDD and installed WXP (my own copy, not any bundled software) the notebook works extremely slow... before during HDD read/write process you could hear that typical for it sound... now the hard drive is perfectly noiseless during operation as is slow as hell...
I tried to follow up with the web and it turns out that if I reinstalled the OS from Toshiba Recovery CD it should do the thing... too bad I didn't know I should have such CD when I was buying it... so now I don't have it... Is there anything I could do about it?
    Plz Help
    Q.

    Hi
As far as I know this unit is delivered just with W98SE and WME. The recovery CD with WXP operating system for this unit is not created by Toshiba.
You can install WXP and use all drivers from Toshiba download site. I dont know how much RAM has your unit, but if the unit has under 128 MB RAM you can not expect that your unit runs fast.

  • MacBook Pro extremely slow start up, Rainbow wheel of death. HELP!

    Hi there
My Mac has just suddenly started becoming very slow. Upgraded to Mavericks 2 months ago. Had an issue at first install that was resolved with re-installation.
Has become very slow to boot, freezing at the Grey Screen with the Apple and spining cog. (Kernel I think?)
It is also very slow once logged in. Nothing has changed system wise. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I'm not too Mac savvy, so the help is very much appreciated. So here's what I've done...
Had already tried to delete CleanMyMac. So I got EasyFind, and used it to delete/destroy the rest of the files. Did the same for Roxio, Sierra Wireless and Seagate. PaceAp would have been installed with Pro Tools, which is now gone.
There are several files associated with Sierra, PaceAp and Seagate (.plist & .bom files) that I cannot delete, as I get an error saying that cannot be deleted.
Tried Verifying and Repairing Disk Permissions - All was OK
Ran through the Sleep, then Restart, then Shutdown sequence. Noticed no difference.
    Reset P-Ram.
    Reset SMC
Rebooted again, holding command + R and ran the disk utility.
First Verified the disk. Got errors:
    Invalid Directory item count
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
The volume Machintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
So I then ran Repair disk, it ran through and then said:
The volume Machintosh HD was repaired successfully.
    The battery condition is normal
      Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh):          5420
      Fully Charged:          Yes
      Charging:          No
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh):          5482
      Health Information:
      Cycle Count:          806
      Condition:          Normal
      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          0
      Voltage (mV):          12401
I then rebooted, but nothing has changed. At the moment it boots to the grey screen with the Apple logo and cogwheel. Takes about 10 mins to then go through to log in. Often the fan will start running as if the system is under load.
When I click login the rainbow wheel pops up and it freezes for a while. Then it eventually loads the home page. Takes another 10 - 20 mins to load everything, the clock and wifi connections in the top right take ages to load.
It will be extremely slow for another 20 mins or so. Cant open folders or do simple tasks without getting the rainbow wheel. Then after a little while it seems to run OK, but still sluggish.
There are no programs that are launched on startup, and I close all programs before shutting the system down. I have over 100 GB free space on the harddrive. Yet I notice in the data from EtreCheck, it states there is only 66 Gb.
Haven't used Time Machine, as my external harddrive is formatted to FAT32, and I have nowhere to store all its contents to reformat it to Mac Extended Journal.  I have backed up all the files from the system that I need.
So is there anything else I can try? Should I try a full system wipe and reinstallation? If so, how do I go about this?
I'm assuming unlike PC's, it's not just a simple task to replace the harddrive, if it is failing hardware?
I'm in rural Australia, so not readily near a Mac Support Shop. But if it is hardware, I'll just have to figure out some way to get to one.
Here's the updated info from EtreCheck, if its of any use..
Thanks again everyone the help, muchos gracias!

  • Problem with In Design CS6 Unexpected Quit and will not re start up, even after computer restart?

In Design CS6 Quit Unexpectedly and will not start back up, even after restarting computer.  Tried to do a CS6 re-install. It finished and said ready to use, but still getting same Unexpected Quit and In Design will not work.  Did not "Un-install CS6 first" Should I try installing CS6 again, un-installing version on computer first?

    Hi Ivesprepress,
You might also try resetting your user preferences
You can delete the replaceable InDesign SaveData and InDesign Defaults files by holding down the following keys while InDesign is launching:
    Windows: Shift+Ctrl+Alt
    Mac OS: Shift+Control+Option+Command
Taken from: InDesign preferences and support file locations

  • Tabs reopen on the start up even after force quitting

I'm having the problem where Safari reopens my previous session even though I force quit the browser. Usually when I start up safari after a force quit, it opens the homepage only. I don't know if it's OS X LION doing this or what. I've already tried going to preferences - general/tabs and setting it to the default stuff. I also tried resetting safari, and it still doesn't work.
Basically speaking, I want safari to just open my homepage after I force quit and reopen; not reopen the tabs I had going from session prior to the force quit.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It's possible that OS X got damaged because of this update.
Hold the Shift key while your Mac is starting to try to start up in safe mode. If you can start up, reinstall the update that got frozen, and finally, restart.
If you can't start up in safe mode, you will need to reinstall OS X or restore a backup. Which Mac OS X version do you have? If it's 10.6, you will have to insert the Snow Leopard DVD and hold the C key while your Mac is starting, and if it's 10.7 or 10.8, hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start in Recovery

  • Dreamweaver CC extremely slow start up

Dreamweaver CC does eventually open, but it stays on the splash screen for about 5 minutes before launching.
I've tried removing the OOBE folders, using the CC Cleaner Tool to remove Dreamweaver and also deleted my saved website/ftp setup inside the program.
    Nothing is working, please help!

Reinstalling via the Cleaner Tool is generally a last resort that clears up any possible problem cause by a faulty installation/corruption within the program.
Does your computer meet the minimum requirements to run it?

  • My iphone 5 wont start up even after i tried holding the home and start up button!

Can someone please help me figure out whats wrong, or do i need to go to the apple store?

I assume you have connected it to a power source to recharge the battery.
Otherwise, be sure you have done the following completely...
    Reboot the device.
Shut down the device by holding the sleep/wake button  and the home button at the same time.
Hold them both until you see the screen go black. In some cases, you may need to keep holding them even after the red power off slider appears. If it does, just keep holding it.
Wait until the white Apple logo appears.
When this happens, you can let go - the iPhone is rebooting

  • Internet is not working on cellular data after updating 8.0.2 in iphone 5s , wifi connectivity is fine , but no internet connection error message is start blinking even after cellular data is on , please help .

I am using iPhone 5s , internet is not working on cellular data even after it is on , wifi is working properly . Please help apple team.

    Hello Mario:
I'm actually surprised that Apple continues to push out 8.02 without addressing these issues. The problem will only anger more users and certainly finger-poking at Airplane Mode isn't the answer. This is an iOS8 code problem and no amount of 'resetting' is providing a reliable fix/solution that sticks.
These issues with loss of cell connectivity, apps that have lost functionality, etc., which are all directly associated to the arrival of iOS8, are so widespread in the user community and pervasive within individual iPads that it's clear there are significant fundamental problems with this release. Given the problems are so blatant, it's fair to ask the question of how they got by the Apple validation team.
What is the status at Apple on rolling out a fully V&V'd version to resolve this?  Respectfully, when it comes to some of my more useful apps, my personal iPad has become a paperweight. The user forums are full of these iOS8 complaints for several weeks and there doesn't seem to be a competent answer from Apple.  Even a "We're aware and we're working on it" would be well received.
Any hope that you can provide will be appreciated. (I'll be monitoring the thread on my Dell laptop because, well, my iPad is i-Inop!).
    Thanks!

  • 3D rendering extremely slow in awesome wm after migrating to systemd

    Good evening, fellow Archers!
Once again your expertise and assistance is required!
    The problem:
3D rendering is very, very, slow after switching to awesome wm and/or upgrading to systemd. Things like turning 3D plots generated in GNU Octave (via gnuplot), as well as glxgears, are running extremely slowy.
Typing "glxinfo | grep direct" into a terminal yields a "yes", though.
    Longer version of the problem:
My Asus Eee Pc 901 has been running OpenBox for a long time, but I haven't used that machine for 2-3 months now. Recently I booted it up again, and discovered that Arch Linux is now using systemd while updating the system. Migrating to systemd was rather painless. However, while doing these upgrades I decided to ditch OpenBox in favor of trying out awesome wm. Everything worked superb in awesome wm, which I would say is now my window manager of choice.
Then I discovered that 3D rendering is very choppy/unresponsive/slow (other than that, the computer is as fast as before). What is going on here? My netbook has an integrated Intel graphics card, by the way, that worked fine before.

I think you're on to something here!! Thanks for the pointer.
Didn't mention it before, because I thought it was unrelated, but this might have something to do with the issue: when logging in, just before awesome wm starts up,
    -bash: /home/username/.bash_profile: Permission denied
    is displayed.
How do I know/change what tty is being used for awesome wm (which seems to be using tty1)? When OpenBox was running before it might have been using another tty (think it was tty7).
I read the information you linked, albeit it was not very clear to me (I don't know how to add my user to different groups, to see if that works better).
    This is what glxinfo says:
    name of display: :0
    display: :0 screen: 0
    direct rendering: Yes
    server glx vendor string: SGI
    server glx version string: 1.4
    server glx extensions:

  • Extremely Slow Time Machine Backup after upgrading to 10.8.3

Time machine backups are taking an extremely long time on my retina MacBook Pro 13 inch after upgrading to 10.8.3. It's taking many minutes just for a kilobyte to be backed up. I've tested transferring something to the disk and it's lightening fast so there's nothing wrong with the disk.
Is anyone having similar issues or know of a fix?

I had the same problem with slow backups. Called Apple 5 times and went through all the hoops checking plists, airport, and then erasing using my airport utility and the first backup of about 25-30 gigs went fine, but the second backup would take between 1-2 hours. By the time it was finished it was ready to do another backup.
After looking at community fixes I found that my Comcast Norton Anti Virus was the problem. Upon speaking for the 6th time to Apple I was told that should have been the first thing they asked, since antivirus programs check each file going to the time capsule. Even unchecking the scan external drives did not help.
I removed the Norton AV from my system and replaced it with the IAV from apple store (free) and my backups are back to normal. I timed a 100 meg using Ethernet/LAN and it took 9 minutes 32 seconds from clicking backup now, searching for backups, preparing backup, backingup, and cleanup. My Wifi connection on 10 megs took only 1 minute 29 seconds.
Now my backups run so fast I don't even see them working. Also the constant updates to Norton were casuing my backups to be 100 megs or more each time due to daily Norton updates. Now I get backups in the order of 10-20 megs - depending up what I have put on the machine. If I put music on it increases the size of the files installed.
I recommend anyone having this slow time capsule problem to turn off your full antivirus program no matter what you are using and watch the difference in speed. I am so happy! No more 2 hour backups and 45 minutes to 1 hour preparing backup! good luck
