Extreme slowness with Airport after installing 10.5.5

OK, I've been nailed by "sudden browser slowness", which, if you look at the number of Google hits in the past few days, seems to be a wide-spread problem. It began for me on evening (~7:00 PM CST) of September, 30th.
I'm running Version 10.5.5, and have been since the public release.
Like most others, I'm sure, I assumed that it was my ISP or router. I recycled both the modem and router, neither of which cured the problem. I cycled my MacBook Pro as well... no dice. The problem has been persistent and affects both Safari and FireFox (v3.0.3). I have a second MacBook Pro that I use for work, so I fired it up and hit my Wierless (D-Link); it was working correctly.
I managed to dig up an ethernet cable and jacked my "poorly performing" MBPro into the router... it was lighting fast. I belive there is an issue with the MBPro's AirPort card and the new 10.5.5 release.
My personal MBPro (the afflicted unit) is approximately 1 year older than my work MBPro, which works correctly on the same network/router.
I've ruled out viruses/malware and even switched router broadcast channels... and yes, even applied OpenDNS IP addresses.

Hi,
1) Everyone would see it
I don't believe everyone would see it; just those with a particular combination of items, say like the physical chipset used for the wifi (note that I have two MBPro's that where manufactured ~1 year apart and they have different AirPort specs) and any number of sub-components.
Additionally, the fact the 10.5.5 release was supposed to patch bugs relating to AirPort specific issues... issues that I have not experienced on either of my machines over the last 18 months, would indicate that is in fact possible for some people "see" problems that I don't "see". Therefore I must conclude that I or others might experience issues that yet another set do not seem to suffer.
2) Other things would be affected as well
Not necessarily. In fact:
1. Physically connecting the MBPro to the router via an ethernet cable, thereby taking the AirPort out of the path, and witnessing "spot on" normal performance in both browsers, would suggest that the problem isn't related to the bowsers, their plug-ins (or the OS in general).
2. I can uses my 'work' MBPro on the same wifi router side-by-side with 'personal' MBPro and do not experience any degradation in performance what so ever. This reduces (if not eliminates) the chances that my issue is with my wifi router (I even switched my routers broadcast channels to to every possible setting and the findings remained consistent across both machines).
Network hardware doesn't know the difference between DNS requests and any other traffic (HTTP >> requests, streaming movies, etc.)
I agree. I wasn't clear in my posting, but this was supposed to be a 'tongue-in-cheek' statement. I had seen numerous postings where this was a recommended solution, so I hoped to avoid getting that advice, by mentioning that I had done so. (I did it, just for the heck of it anyway... of course it didn't solve anything)
It could be someone nearby who just bought a Wi-Fi router that's suddenly interfering with yours, or a neighbor who bought a 2.4 GHz cordless phone or any number of other things.
Have you tried downloading iStumbler to check whether there are any new routers in your area that may be interfering with yours?
Good call... but I did verify that I'm not in proximity to any other wifi devices.
Further, the fact that it "just began" implies it's something in your architecture rather than a software issue per se.
Speaking as a software engineer with decades of experience, that problems "just begin" are sadly the norm, not the exception. Especially when you code to the metal. I could be something as simple as a property file that was cleaned out in a background process that was missed in testing or something more elusive, like hardware/software combinations that are impossible to mock in a testing environment and are only discovered once the product is "in the wild".
Knowing this, I have attempted to communicate my "discoveries" here and on other sites, to help speed along a solution.
All of that being said, I truly do appreciate your time and effort helping me with this issue. The best way to get these problems resolved is through open cooperation.

  • Craigslist extremely slow with Airport Extreme

Odd problem - Got an airport extreme last week. Each of the hundreds of web sites I visit on a daily basis loads fine, except craigslist, which is extremely slow to load every page and every image etc. I can browse craigslist easily on the same laptop in other locations. How can I fix?

Thanks. If the problem occurs on every Mac or other device using that base station, there really is not anything else worth checking. It could be a DNS problem associated with your ISP, or it could be a corrupted parameter in the base station. To fix the latter would require a "hard reset" followed by configuring it again:
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.
If the slow page loads still occur, you might temporarily try a public DNS such as OpenDNS, which will bypass the DNS your ISP uses. You can try that before or after resetting the base station.

  • Extreme slowness with WRT610n, after much research

    Greetings,
I'm hoping some networking gurus here can lend a thought.
I have a WRT610N v1.  Updated the firmware, reset the router to factory, conenct to it unsecured.  Speed tests max out around 4Mbps after I've hunted through the bands to find the best-performer.  My throughput when connected directly to the cable modem is 8-12Mbps.  A big loss.  What's even weirder is that when I wire in to the router, no wifi, the throughput is 2Mbps tops.
Under these conditions, why can't the router perform even marginally?
Why is the writed speed slower than WiFi?
I have read other discussions where people with underperforming WRT610n routers were able to get them to deliver 30Mbps and above.  What do I yet need to do?
    Z

Try changing the MTU size on your router and see if that makes any difference.
Change the MTU size to 1365. Save the settings and power cycle the router.

My computer is extremely slow, with the rainbow wheel appearing with every click. It is one year old, and has all the most recent updates. Why is it so painfully slow?

That sounds horrible. There are a number of reasons it could occur.
The first thing to do is ensure you have adequate backups, because what you describe can be a symptom of impending disk failure.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting. There are four separate parts to it; read everything first.
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Don't download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

  • Usually i back my IPhone with ICloud, after installing IOS 5 it asked me to restore from I Tunes what i have to do?

usually i back my IPhone with ICloud, after installing IOS 5 it asked me to restore from ITunes what i have to do to restore all my contact, applications and others?

If your iPhone does not search for a wi-fi connection before you are asked whether you want to set it up as new phone or restore a backup from iTunes, then I guess you have the same issue as highlighted in this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19638850?ac_cid=tw123456#19638850
iCloud back ups can only be accessed via wi-fi that's why you are not granted this option, I have the exact same issue.

  • Cant get ical to sync with iphone after installing OSX

cant get ical to sync with iphone after installing OSX

I too was a mobileme user and have just migrated to iCloud on mackbook pro w/OS 10.7.4. Transition caused my sent mailboxes to rearrange themselves so that I have no comprehensive 'sent' mailbox as I did previously and the view on both incoming and outgoing mailboxes keeps rearranging itself no matter how many times I set preferences. One result is that search function no longer works.  Is anyone else having problems like this?  All was fine for a week after transition but after having an evening when my password was repeatedly rejected I had to log in and out of iCloud (as directed by tech support) and w/in an hour or so the mailbox problem began.

  • Anyone have trouble with IPad3 after installing OS6.1.3?  keeps crashing

Anyone having trouble with iPad3 after installing OS6.1.3?  Mine keeps crashing.

Mine seems to be just fine.
    Try a reset,
Reset your iPad by pressing the 'Sleep' and 'Home' button at the same time for about 15 seconds or so. Your iPad  will then go through a reset / reboot procedure and will be ready for use within about a minute.
Don't worry about doing this as you will not lose data or settings.
Good luck and do report back.

  • PC running extremly slow with iTunes

    Hello all,
Question is why my laptop would be running extremly slow with cover flow when it has more than enough horsepower to run almost any application (2.33 dual core, 512 graphics card, 2gig ram). iTunes runs just fine on my work laptop with cover flow, and its specs arent on par with my personal laptop. The only difference i can think of is that the work laptop (the good one) is running xp pro and the home is running vista 32bit. the other difference i can think of is that at home, all the music is stored via external HD while on the work laptop the files are stored locally on the laptops hard drive.
any advice would be greatly appreciated
    Cheers!

Vista has been reported to be a bit more buggy/laggy/unstable with iTunes. Music running of an external will also be noticeably slower and more jumpy than running off an internal. You answered your own question.

  • Extremely slow wifi speeds after Yosemite install

I "upgraded" to Yosemite and now my wifi speeds on this machine (iMAC) are extremely slow, like crawling. Was fine this morning before update. All other devices in the house (iphones, ipad, macbook pro) are all running normal fast speeds. Does anyone know if there is a fix for this? Missing Mavericks already.

I saw a big (huge) change in wifi speeds after Yosemite upgrade, it was more noticeable the farther away from the router I was. I moved closer to the Router and speed was back to normal.
You can check your connection by pressing at the same time alt(option) and the wifi icon (at top of menu bar), a drop down list will show the connection's stats, look for TX Rate towards the bottom. After upgrade my TX Rate dropped to 5 Mbps! I moved closer to the Router, and TX Rate improved to 146 Mbps, Safari was browsing at normal speeds again.
I read other discussions, found a suggestion to rename my location, in System Preferences - Network - WiFi, at top of panel Location, mine was named Automatic (the default). As suggested, I clicked on the arrows, selected edit, and renamed the location, name it anything you like... I restarted the computer, and luckily enough my TX  Rate at the farthest location from Router improved from 5Mbps to 39 Mbps. Still slower than before, never saw it below 80's. Don't know if the restart or the change of location name did the trick, maybe it was that Yosemite needed time to adjust to its new environment, regardless, there was some improvement.
I think there is an issue with Yosemite and WiFi that causes the TX Rate to drop more than with Mavericks as the distance from Router increases. Does not sound logical, but that is what the connection stats are saying!

  • No internet with Airport after update to 10.6

since i updated my macbook to 10.6 i have no internet connection
i can connect to my airport base station but then the internet is not working. i have an IP address but i can not connect to the internet and to servers.
if i'm plug-in an ethernet cable, the connection is working. My iphone can also connect without any problems.
The network utility says, that i'm connected over Firewire and not over Airport. That's really strange!! At the network interface Airport (en1) the model of my airport extreme card is wrong! There is the model of my Firewire card.
Do anybody know how to fix this?? There is something very strange!!

Solutions to this problem seam to be fleeting for those with the problem. So far I have had some success on my Macbook2,1 (late 2006), for about 4 days, by changing my wireless router network setting form 802.11 b/g to b and some have had success using g only. Last night I again started having problems and noted that the verizon wireless router was dropping the internet connection. Called Verizon and they fixed "something" which seamed to fix the problem, sort of for a while, so I downloaded the Verizon firmware updater for my Verizon wireless modem which, after installing via Windows XP in BootCamp, was immediately successful in maintaining the connection using 802.11b. I tried changing back to b/g but connection slowed web page loading again, so back to 802.11b which has been rock solid for about 6 hours. I also have quit using Safari due to lags in loading web pages and switched to Firefox 3.5 which appears to load web pages faster. My best guess at this time is that Apple "tightened up" the 802.x protocols in Snow Leopard but of course I have no proof. Using dslreports.com>Tools>Speed Tests appear to have restored DSL speeds to the 2700 KB from the 2100 KB range.

  • MacBook Pro 13 " going slower in performance after Installing LION OSX

    Hey Guys ,
I had noticed some problems in my MacBook Pro 13" which I bought in the MID of 2011 ( i5 processor ) , I had purchased and installed LION OSX and observed after installing that my Backlite ( Keyboard ) dont get on when I start up at the LOG IN , which used to work in SNOW LEOPARD .
Booting takes SO SO SO long as when comapared with the previous OS .
Heating Problem is also a must to mention .
If you guys know how to reduce these problems please help me out !
    Thank You .

I'm curious if you ever found a solution for this issue.  I recently purchased the SanDisk Extreme II 480GB, replacing my OWC Extreme Pro 240GB.  The OWC never experienced the "slow to wake" issue whereas the SanDisk drive does, consistently.  To make sure I'm having the same symptoms, this is what happens to me:  Put the mac to sleep (either manually or letting it do it on its own, waiting for the led to pulse showing that it is asleep), then wake it up (press a key on the keyboard), the logon screen shows almost immediately but as soon as I try to type the pinwheel/beach ball shows up, I wait between 20 and 30 seconds and then I'm able to type and all is well.
I contataced SanDisk and their support was horrible.  They simply told me "contact MAC for this issue" (no joke, not "contact Apple" but "contact MAC", in all caps).  I explained that it works fine with the OWC drive just not the SanDisk.  They replied with another article showing that all macs have trouble waking from sleep (not true). I replied again indicating that I've never had this issue with any of my 3rd party drives, only this SanDisk.  Then the replied simply stating that all mac's have issues with 3rd party hard drives when waking from sleep.  At this point I threw a fit and yelled at my screen, even though it wasn't my screens fault.
In any case, their support has not been willing to do any actual troubleshooting.  I'd love to return it and I might have to - but as you stated, it's annoying to have this issue but the performance is fine the rest of the time.
Thanks for any input you have.
    Bryan

  • Syncing has become extremely slow with iOS 5.

After install of iOS 5, syncing from my PC to my iPhone 4 has become extremely slow. I've uninstalled iTunes, and restored my iPhone 4.
    Anyone have a solution?
(by "slow" I mean I've been working on it for 16 hrs. Still not done.)

I did two things that made syncing an iPhone 4 with iOS5 a lot more speedier; not sure which did the trick but my iPhone now syncs in seconds rather than churn on and on and on.  Here's what I did.  First, in iTunes, under Edit, Preference, Devices, I checked the "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically".  Second, I deleted all my old iPhone backups.  After doing these two things, my iPhone 4 with iOS5 in iTunes 10.5 syncs in seconds.
