Extreme versus Express for computer connection and network extension

I somehow posted this message in the Windows section, so let me try again:
I have an older Mac Pro that I have moved to a location that does not have a convenient wired connection to our home network. We do have one Airport Extreme box on the system, so I was thinking that I could kill two birds with one stone and purchase a second box to not only give the Mac Pro a wireless connection, but also to extend the network.
Will either the Airport Extreme or the Airport Express work equally well for this purpose? Does the Extreme offer some advantage in this situation?

Yes either the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) or AirPort Express (AX) will do the job. In this situation neither offers an advantage.

  • How do you allow SQL Server 2014 Express for remote connection and in firewall?

I'm sorry if this was answered here before.
I installed SQL Server 2014 Express and it is working perfectly. I want my server to be accessed through LAN. It is a named instance.
I searched the internet and here's what i did:
    1. Through the SQL Configuration manager, I enabled all the Protocols of my Instance (TCP/IP, Named Pipes and Shared Memory). I changed in the IP Addresses the "IP ALL" TCP Dynamic Ports to 1434.
    2. In the Firewall I made an Inbound Rule to allow the Program (%ProgramFiles% (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.MyInstance\MSSQL\Binn\sqlservr.exe)
    3. I also made 2 Inbound Rules to allow (TCP/IP Port 1433) and (UDP Port 1434).
    4. Restarted my instance. SQL Server Browser and  SQL Server Reporting Services are also running.
    5. No Luck I cant still access the server using a different computer in the network.
    Please help.

    Hello,
In Express Edition by default remote connections are disabled, you have to enable it first:
Configure the remote access Server Configuration Option
It's always a two way communication, so you have to create also outbound rules, not only inbound, and this on server as well as on client side; see
Configure a Windows Firewall for Database Engine Access

  • Can anyone recommend apple extreme vs express for Mac pro and 2x iPads in home setting?

Looking for advice on use of express vs extreme for home use

The Extreme is dual band, so faster devices will connect to the faster band while slower devices connect at their own pace. The slower devices will not slow down the faster devices, as would be the case with the single band AirPort Expess.
The USB port on the Extreme will support a hard drive and/or a printer. The USB port on the AirPort Express will support only a printer.
The Extreme uses a new antenna array that will result in better coverage and deeper penetration of the signal. The Express uses a simple antenna arrangement.
If you plan to connect any wired devices to the the router, the Exteme has 3 Ethernet ports.  The single Ethernet port on the Express will be used to connect to the modem, so any other wired devices will not be able to connect to the Express.
The Express will handle a total of 10 wireless connections, while the Extreme will handle up to 50.
For an $80 premium the Extreme probably provides 3 times the performance capabilty of an Express. That makes it a no brainer for me,  but you and others may disagree.

  • Can I use Ethernet for Internet connection and Airport express for printer

How / can I use Ethernet for Internet connection and use an airport express to set up wifi for printer and Apple TV?
    Macbook Pro. OS X 10.9.4

I've never tried it, so I don't know what the results will be.
However, you can move Ethernet to the top of the Services list in Network System Prefs which will cause it to be the Internet source. There is a command in the gear menu to set the Service order.  However, after thinking about it, if there isn't an internet connection via Wi-Fi, it might automatically drop down to the Ethernet connection.
Then, you can set up your Wi-Fi so that it doesn't connect to the Internet, as Linc stated. How to do that would be dependent on the Router.

Using Airport Express for External speakers and Apple TV.  When I'm on MAC computer adn using internet sound from Internet does not go through external speakers.  Instead it comes out of Mac computer speaker.  Why?

As far as I know, the Airport Express only transmits sounds via Itunes. So every other sound (internet, but also incoming mail) will be coming out of your mac instead of your external speakers.

  • AP Extreme and AP Express drop internet connection and/or can't be found.

There have been a few posts about Airport's losing their connections and whatnot with Leopard and newer things, but not exactly the issue that I've been dealing with:
I setup a brand new Airport Extreme and Airport Express in our house because we needed the extension to get internet into the front room, and we wanted to link our stereo to iTunes.
The problem is, when my wife and I close the computer and then later reawaken it, the connection will show up as full strength, but then upon opening Safari, we are told that we are "not connected to the internet" and need to run network diagnostics. Running network diagnostics restarts the router, and it then will work.
The biggest and most irritating problem is that it doesn't always do it. Right now I just picked up my Powerbook after not being used all day and it works great.
Also, when I open AirPort Utility, it may or may not find both the Extreme and the Express. Sometimes it only finds one or the other (sometimes only the Extreme, which makes zero sense to me because the Express is between me and it).
Suggestions? Clarifications? Directions to another post that I may have missed?
    Thanks,

Erin I am sorry you are facing difficulty downloading the Creative Cloud software.  It can be frustrating when you do not have access to high speed stable Internet.
You can attempt to download the base installers and updates by following the directions listed at:

You may want to attempt to utilize some form of download management as the main issue seems to be the stability of your connection.
There is not currently a method to resume downloads within the Creative Cloud Desktop application.  There is download management included though it may not be enough to compensate for the current Internet connection.  If you are curious you can find additional details on how to resolve download errors at Error downloading Creative Cloud applications - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/error-downloading-cc-apps.html.

  • Using Airport Express for wireless printing and possibly streaming music

I have had the toughest time figuring out this Airport Express. It seems there are so many different ways to set it up. I've tried to read forums but just can't seem to wrap my head around what I need to do. I tried awhile back to join my network wirelessly but was having problems.
I don't really care about extending my current network. My internet service is through Verizon Fios and the router they provided works just fine and don't have any issues with connecting anywhere in the house. I bought the AE to be able to print wirelessly and stream music from my iMac in another room.
So to print wirelessly obviously the printer has to be plugged in to the AE, but does the AE have to be plugged into my router? Or can I have the AE anywhere in the house wherever the printer is? When I print, am I using my existing network or do I have to disconnect a computer from the wireless network and access a 2nd network to be able to print?
My first priority is to print wirelessly. If I can get it to work It'd be cool to stream music from my iMac. Obviously the AE needs to be where the speakers are, but again, does the AE have to plugged in to the router? And again, is this done through my existing network? Or do I have to stream music through a 2nd network? I apologize if i'm asking the same questions that have been asked in previous forums, I just haven't been successful thus far so wanted to see what response or tips I could get. Thanks.
My existing network has "WPA Personal" security set up on it if you need to know that.

but does the AE have to be plugged into my router? Or can I have the AE anywhere in the house wherever the printer is?
If you configure the Express correctly to "join" your FIOS wireless network, you can position it anywhere that it will receive a good, strong wireless signal.
The trick to setting the Express up to "join" is that you must choose exactly the same type of security for the Express as your main router is using. This is tricky when you are using devices from two different manufacturers because they often use different names for the same thing.
For example, when you say that the FIOS is setup to WPA Personal, we really need more information. There's usually a TKIP or AES associated with WPA. You have two choices on the Express for WPA settings, WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal. We can only guess which one might be the correct match for your FIOS network and if you don't choose the right setting, the Express cannot join the network and you have to start the configuration all over again from scratch and try the other setting.
Does your Fios have a setting for WPA2 Personal? Some manufacturers label this WPA2-PSK (AES). Or, maybe you find that your FIOS is using WPA-PSK (TKIP), which is the same thing as Apple WPA/WPA2 Personal. It's confusing. That's why we tell users to choose wireless gear from the same manufacturer. It's much easier when two devices talk the same language.
When I print, am I using my existing network or do I have to disconnect a computer from the wireless network and access a 2nd network to be able to print?
If you have a compatible printer plugged into the USB port on the AirPort Express and have "installed" the printer by setting it up, you will be able to print over your existing wireless network.
First things first. You need to get the Express setup to "join" correctly and get a green light. Then, tackle the printer setup.

  • Time Capsule to Extreme to Express via Ethernet Connection ?

Recently purchased all three to help simplify my Home/Business network but having issues connecting and communicating between all three.
Whole home is hard wired for ethernet in every room so I assume this would be the fastest method of linking all three together but would also like all three to broadcast wireless for full property coverage. I beleive I am using airport utility 5.6.1 for setup. I am working on Windows 7 machine.
    Setup so far is:
Motorola Cable Modem with Charter Service to Wan Port of Time capsule (Seems to all work well)
Then in other room/level Airport Extreme with ethernet from time capsule to Wan Port of Extreme
and this is the point where I lose it... I haven't even gotten to the Express on the basement level..
Could anyone chime in with more understandable instruction on both hard wire configuration and software using
    airport utility?
Or maybe point in right direction? What other info needed?
    Certainly appreciate any help..

The roaming document explains adequately how to setup... at least the principle of it.
    It isn't hard at all..
One device is the main router.. You create a wireless network from this router.
All other devices are bridged.. (that is router bridge not wireless bridge)
They all get IP address from the main router.
All of them create a wireless network..
if you want roaming you simply use the same name SSID (wireless name in apple speak).. same security setting WPA2 Personal = WPA2 AES and password.
But you can setup different networks if you want.
Channels are supposed to sort themselves out automagically.. but I don't believe in voodoo.. try voodoo first and if it fails, no biggie.. set manual wireless channels.. set simple short names no spaces pure alphanumeric.
It is perhaps new for you and the lack of html setup is a pain.. but it isn't hard to do. Apple have cut back the number of options to barest min to do the job.
Come back and ask specific questions if you run into trouble. We have some very clued up people here.. who spend their life energy answering the same question every day with a cheerful attitude.. never seen the like.. on a windows forum you would be told to RTFM.

  • Apple Airport Extreme Base Station for PPPoE, DHCP and NAT with ActionTec DSL modem

I just spent several hours trying to track down proper instructions for setting up my Apple AEBS to do the PPPoE, DHCP and NAT while connected to an ActionTec M1000 (no wireless module).  It turns out my initial set ups on both devices were correct, but that the order for rebooting and reconnecting the two devices is critical.  All of the threads I found on this forum and on many others suggested this was not possible, but it is.  What I don't yet know is whether it is the best method for running my home network DSL connection to my ISP (CenturyLink).
The instructions I found that worked come courtesy of Brandon Konkle's blog and are both simple and clear:  http://brandon.konkle.us/post/19637529637/centurylink-actiontec-q1000-airport-ex treme-bridge
The proper settings for the ActionTec DSL Modem can be found under Advanced Setup/IP Adressing/WAN IP Address
Click RFC 1483 Transparent Bridging then click on Apply.
    (see also http://qwest.centurylink.com/internethelp/modems/m1000/pdf/M1000_BRIDGE.pdf )
To reduce time, do this BEFORE you reset your AEBS then set the AEBS so that you don't have to wait for the AEBS to reboot.
In contrast to what Brandon described for the Q1000 modem, my AEBS never reconnected to the modem (he describes his as getting an IP from his ISP, then dropping it then getting another over and over - mine never got an IP).  Once you have reset both devices as described, the critical steps I have not found described elsewhere were:
    1.  Disconnect the power from both the modem and the Airport Extreme.
    2.  Disconnect the Ethernet cable between the two devices
    3.  Restore power to the 2 devices and allow them to fully reboot.  For the ActionTec M1000, this is indicated when the lights stop blinking.  (Note that the Internet light will NOT be lit in this instance since the modem is acting only as a bridge.  You will NOT have an Internet connection until the AEBS is reconnected.)  The AEBS will be blinking yellow.
    4.  Reconnect the Ethernet cable between the devices (make sure on the M1000 that you are using the connector with the circle icon over it, not the arrow icon).
Within about 60 seconds, the AEBS light went to steady green and the connection to the Internet was restored.
Now I have to see if this is a more stable configuration than the flaky one I had before while using the AEBS as a bridge and the M1000 to do everything.
Does anyone think or know if it will make a difference?

No one can accurately predict in advance what the actual results might be. I've tried both ways with different products and cannot say that one method is better than the other.  What works is best.
In theory, it is preferable to have the modem provide the PPPoE connection service since it is the device connected directly to the Internet.
In practice, results vary depending on the service provider, products used, phase of the moon, alignment of the planets, etc.

  • AirPort Extreme + AirPort Express for AirTunes

    Hi there,
I've just unpacked my new AP Extreme station (v7.3.2) as a replacement for the AP Express (v6.3) and it works just fine. What I now have been trying for some hours is to set up AP Express for AirTunes, but it doesn't work.
I just want to add AP Express to the wireless network created via the AP Extreme not to extend the network, but simply use AirTunes.
I tried the guided set-up via the Airport Utility, also the manual one. I tried to create a closed and normal network. The problem is always the same: After the update of the AP Express station, the station can't be found and needs a hard reset to start just another try for a set-up...only the AP Extreme shows up.
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance.

...I solved it myself this morning at about 1.00 AM, but this page was down, so I couldn't post my message earlier...sometimes its easier than you think: I just forgot to enter the MAC address of the AirPort Express under the "Access" menu of he AirPort Extreme. That was the reason why the Express couldn't join the network created by he Extreme. The rest is as Nee Kun stated above with one difference: Once the Express is plugged in, I of course see/access (frankly you cannot see it, because its "closed"=invisible) only one network, but in my AirPort Utility I can see both, Extreme and Express

  • Airport Express G cannot connect to network

    Hello,
I have the Airport Express (G version) running the 6.3 firmware. My problem is that I cannot connect to my home network. When I use the airport express to create the wireless network, I can connect the Windows and Mac machines to it to stream iTunes and all works perfectly. When I connect it to my home network (Linksys WRT54G running dd-wrt) I cannot connect anything to it once it is configured. I set it up from the mac and all the network settings are transferred to the Airport Express. It seems to connect for a minute then the connection drops. Sometimes iTunes sees the Airport Express and it tries to connect but is unsuccessful. I cannot edit the airport settings from either machine without resetting it to factory defaults and reconfiguring.
The problem seems to be the Airport Express doesn't want to play nice with the home network. Does anybody have any suggestions?
As I am writing this I cannot remember if I have had the Airport Express working since I've installed dd-wrt. I know it worked pre dd-wrt and am hoping that isn't the issue.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Jared

Express works fine with third party routers including the WRT54G, but once you modify it you're on your own. I'd go to the dd-wrt forum and ask around.

  • Only one computer connected to network?

I just purchased a new Airport Extreme to replace a Linksys router that was dropping signal too much. I used the Airport Utility on my iMac to set up a Wireless network for my iMac and Macbook to connect to.
Right away, my iMac showed full Airport bars and the wireless network was connected, but no web pages could be displayed. Meanwhile, my Macbook in the kitchen was working just fine. I restarted my iMac and that seemed to fix the issue.
Later that night, I was on the internet on the iMac and my wife was unable to connect on the Macbook, getting the same issue I had earlier on the iMac...full bars and it showed it was connected to my wireless network, but Safari said there was no internet connection.

    Welcome to the discussions, brado09!
+I just purchased a new Airport Extreme to replace a Linksys router that was dropping signal too much.+
Based on the information in your post, it's likely that the Linksys was experiencing the same type of challenges that your AirPort Extreme is now facing...wireless interference from another source such as cordless phones or other nearby wireless networks, security systems, microwave towers, power lines, the list is unfortunately endless.
See this Apple Support Document to learn a bit more about this epidemic problem.
If you have cordless phones there, please power them and the base stations all off for 60-90 minutes to see if your wireless performance improves. Even if you don't have cordless phones, the neighbors probably do. My neighbor...across the street....can bring my wireless network to a crawl if he's in his front yard talking on his cordless phone. But, not much you can do about the neighbors except know that they can be causing problems.
Next, we'll tackle some possible adjustments to your wireless network, but first, we need to understand a bit more about your layout to provide the best suggestions
How far from the AirPort Extreme are the iMac and MacBook located?
How many walls must the signal pass through to reach each device?
If the iMac is used as a desktop, is it feasible to connect it to the AirPort Extreme using an ethernet cable?
