Extremely Confused

Does airport express act as a router? For example, right now I use a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Can i completely get rid of the Wireless Router and replace it with an Airport Express and still have all my computers connected wirelessly to the internet? I guess the only downside of this would be that my base computer that has the router connected to it right now would also have to become wireless because there is only one port in the Airport Express, and that port would be occupied by the cable running from my modem? Am i correct?

In my opinion there is nothing that justifies the difference. There are a number of differences between the Express/Extreme, but none that would make such a big difference in my opinion.
The Extreme can handle more wireless clients than the express so is aimed at the corporate environment. It can have an analogue modem and can be powered over ethernet but there doesn't seem to be any physical difference that would account for the difference.
To be honest I think that when Apple introduced the Extreme it was cheaper than most other wireless equipment at the time but unlike the others brands they haven't reduced prices in-line with competition. They bought out the express to be the low cost alternative that would compete with all of the third party wireless routers. I'm supprised that Apple still sell the Extreme there can't be that strong demand for it these days. Maybe Apple had hoped that the 802.11n standard would be complete already and the Extreme could be replaced with a new model.

IMac 5K - 3TB fusion, bootcamp damaged, removed and now extremely confused in reading answers for fix

Two days ago I rebooted to Bootcamp Windows 8.1 and it blue screened. I have been trying for two days to fix my system following helpful posts here and I'm just digging myself further into confusion and complications. At this point I'm extremely in over my head. I have removed the Bootcamp partition using Boot Camp Assistant and tried re-installing Windows again and again using BCA…
At the moment I am back to no Windows partition, just a 3TB OS X partition, but when I try to create a Windows partition it gets created as a logical core... heck, I don't understand enough, just know it's not right.
How do I get my drive tables all right again and then be able to create a working Bootcamp partition? What screenshots do I need? I appreciate any help I can get.

Okay, I used Bootcamp to create a EFI-bootable USB drive with Windows 8.1
I had my drive back to a single 3TB partition.
I created a Free Disk (empty) partition of 750GB (which was then set as 876.82GB).
I rebooted.
Created a new partition, got the notice that Windows will create a smaller 128 MB partition.
It did create the 128 MB partition, or showed such.
Then when I go to format the other, last free space partition it seems to work.
When I go to install Windows 8.1 in that partition I am told Windows cannot find a partition to install into.
Here is my diskutil list as it is now.
… and I just saw the "must be under the 2TB limit" again… I don't know how I had Bootcamp working until last week. It was cleanly set up on my new Mac as ~750GB the first time with BCA and worked for months until whatever changes were made with 10.10.3.

Extremly Confusing Library Problem - Please Help

Ok, I am so confused by this. I drag my music folder to my itunes library and all my music is added with one HUGE problem. Randomly I get anywhere from 2 to 7 or 8 copies of each one of my songs. Only for particular albums though. Some are fine and there is only one of each song, but others I've got like 6 copies of the same song! They are the exact same song, they aren't from different albums or anything like that, they are somehow continually duplicating themselves and I don't know what to do. I tried using the Add to Library... too with the same results.
Any idea how I can fix this so I only have one copy of each of my songs in my library? Any solutions would be greatly appreciated thanks a lot in advance.

Keep in mind that iTunes is an extremely sophisticated visual and organizational aid, but the songs themselves are on your hard drive. It's possible that you might have more than one copy of the same song on your hard drive and each of those copies has a different name. It is also possible that the same song with the same file name is duplicated in several different folders. Another possibility is that you have the same song in more than one format (such as mp3, wav, aiff, m4a).
In order to clean up your hard drive and hence your iTunes, find the songs on your hard drive in the Finder or by getting info in iTunes by right clicking on the song and see if you have the same song under a different name. For instance, if you have, say, "Midnight Rambler" by the Rolling Stones duplicated in your iTunes applications, it might turn out that you have 06MidnightRambler-RollingStone.mp3, MidnightRamblerStones.mp3, and RollingStones-MidnightRambler.m4a. Or it is in multiple folders, say "Rolling Stones" and "Let it Bleed."
It appears that the newest version of iTunes gives you the option of deleting the song itself from your hard drive (moving it to the trash), as opposed to just removing it from the library.

Extremely Confused about Airport Extreme.

I have a macbookpro which is a little under a year old, my family runs on PCs and just got a "N" Wireless router - is there a way to update my computer so it will run on the N, or will an update only work to run on the new N airport extreme base/wireless console.
I know there is a downloadable update for $1.99, but the updates (AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001) is says needs to be downloaded first won't run on my computer - am i missing something?

If your MacBook Pro has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, than yes...and no, it should work with most "n" wireless routers.

A very unique problem but extremely confusing

I have a servlet based application using JSP's and also some xml config stuff. It is throwing a Internal Servlet Error:
java.lang.NullPointerException
I would have sorted out had it just been a NullPointerException as I am not a newbie by any means but the confusing part is that it is being thrown on only 1 of our 7 installations. I have tried to install previously tested versions on this machine as well but they all throw the same exception. and run fine on all the other machines.
Whats going on?????????????????????????????????????????????

If it works differently on one machine then that suggests that one machine is somehow configured differently (e.g. misplaced properties file, badly configured connection pool, etc.)

Airport Extreme confused by frequent login failures

My AEBS seems to get hung up when a device tries to connect to get an IP address and fails the WPA handshake. Here's what the log says:

This will go on indefinitely and while this is happening the network is unreliable. Restarting the base station fixes the problem.
I can't figure out which device this is (may be a neighbor's!) How can I stop this barrage from freezing up my AEBS?

I only have one base station. I have been unsuccessful in finding the culprit. I ended up changing the name of my network which has solved things for now. The previous name was "Airport", which a mobile device nearby may recognize as a network it can log on to. New name is a bit more creative

HELP! Extremely Worried for Film Project (lost files) (please read urgent)

Okay so here is the dilemma-
Here I am tonight, plugging away at the editing process for a short film that I filmed in California back in February, and have had various other film producers and buddies filming at random times out there since. I had all of my footage on a WD Storage drive (this included pretty much all of the video files), and I had already imported all of the files into premiere and was about to begin editing the footage with them. Suddenly, I noticed that I was going low in memory space on my hard drive that I was working on, so I saved my Premiere File, then selected it, dropped it over into the WD Storage Drive that also contained all the footage from the film, and clicked on it to open it from there. However, when I opened the premiere file this time, it asked me to located "MVI_6104.mov", the first .mov file out of 400 that I had in there... and I couldn't find it. I looked for the source files in the new hard drive I'd just moved my premiere file into (where they just were at), i looked for them in my old hard drive, and in the three additional hard drives I have sitting next to my Mac... but the files had simply vanished without a trace. I checked the trash, nothing, and I havent deleted any files all night. They're simply gone, and I've hand combed every inch of every hard drive... will someone please help me? Without this footage I am dead and I am willing to get it back at all costs. Already ran a few of the free data recovery scans, but to no avail.. they picked up nothing. I literally have no idea what happened and I am currently having a panic attack. Thank you so much for your time and I really hope you can help me find an answer.

The files used to be in a clearly marked folder on my hard drive labelled "Death Rides The Apocalypse Source Files" (the name of the film). I've searched every hard drive I own for the files and nothing. I can't find even a trace of them existing in the first place. The entire folder that used to be there is gone along with the files! Very strange.

Thanks. I searched the external drive first with data deletion recovery services, then by myself and I hand combed through all of the folders and video files. I even specifically searched the drive for file names in case I missed something, but nothing. I run OS X 10.6.8, and Premiere Pro CS5.5 The original source files were on the external hard drive with a tetrabyte of space that I attempted to move the PPro project onto, but now their original folders, names, files and everything have literally vanished. The project file doesn't matter since I just started editing but I lost all of the footage in there. The external hard drive still has around 765.3 GB of space left so I doubt I killed it simply moving a project over , but you never know. It was odd, when I moved it, the "Move In Progress" window with the twisting progress bar flashed for a second that it was to move 186.5 GB (which would accurately be around the amount of footage we had), but suddenly flashed and just moved it over in a second. Maybe this will shed some light. I'm extremely confused and worried. Thank you.

E1500 - Extremely difficult setup for experienced user

This is about the tenth wireless router I have configured, and it was by far the most difficult. In their effort to make setup easy for newbies, the wireless setup was extremely confusing for me. For example, it asks for a name and password for the router. Nowhere was I told that this was the network name and password! And nowhere was I told what kind of authentication was being used. I still don't know. It eventually took over an hour to get working, and I still don't have bi-directional wireless communication with my printer established. Bottom line, I sure wish that Cisco provided an "experienced user" setup!

So the concern that you said is the configuration of the Router ( E1500 ).. So could please inform us the name of the ISP( Internet Service Provider )... Because the configuration depends on your ISP( Internet Service Provider ) setup...
If you want to configure the router with the help of the CD......so for that you need to unistall the existing Cisco Connect Software from the computer...
Reset the Router for 30 sec...
and power cycle the network... ( Unplug the router and the modem for 30 sec and then plug them back in )
Make the following connectivity -------- Modem ----> ( Internet port ) Router and then from ( port 1 of the router ) to the -----> Computer... Then install the Cisco Connect Software... It will help you in configuring the Router...Secondly where it will ask for the Router name and Router password that will be your wireless network name and the authentication as well as that will be the Router username and password to get into the Web Interface....

Why is my bill so confusing!? Can't it be simpler?

On October 23rd I purchased an iPhone 5S from Verizon Wireless, and started a Unlimited Talk & Text (2GB) plan with Wireless Phone Protection from Asurion. The monthly charges are $88.73. The total amount paid to activated the account, pay the first monthly charge, and purchase the iPhone 5S was $136.55 which was paid in full. After my phone arrived I changed my phone number from a temporary number that a Verizon customer service agent had set me up with, and then ported in my regular number - closing the other line. At this point the Oct-Nov bill was paid in full at $136.55.
After a week or two of enjoying my new Verizon Wireless service I decided to check my next bill in advance. Due in Nov-Dec was $119.44. This is a lot different than the monthly charge of $88.73 I was expecting to pay. I began scanning through my statement trying to figure out what the $30 difference was for. I discovered that I had a 1GB overage on my data plan, and the fee was $15. Okay, that explains half of it. What about the other $15? I called Verizon Wireless support, and spoke to someone who explained to me that because I had changed plans in the middle of the month that overage was charged on both plans. Baffled, and confused I tried to explain that I had made no changes to my account other than changing from a temp number back in October. Apparently not listening to what I had just said, she then stated that she was sorry I wasn't aware that changing plans in the middle of the month can cause fees to carry over onto a new plan. She added a credit of $30 to my account that would show up on the Dec-Jan bill. Well that doesn't help me much, or explain anything! She still didn't understand that I had not changed plans!
Knowing my balance of $119.44 is still due in just a few days I decided to be very conservative getting a few groceries for the week this morning. Upon checking out at the register my debit card was declined. I paid with credit instead, and decided to check on my Wells Fargo account using the iPhone app. There was a $89 charge from Verizon Wireless that had nearly emptied my checking account. Confused yet again I go home to see if there was a change in my $119.44 balance, and there was not. Lo-and-behold the $119.44 is still due by this weekend.
So as you might imagine I'm extremely confused at this point. I have paid plenty of bills online with many different services. I don't understand why my Verizon bill is so confusing.

24p assets confused

I'm confused and the documentation doesn't help much.
Source clip is 1080/24p *.mov in AIC.
Now I want to create a HD DVD where the original 24p clip is preserved. I understand DVD has to be tagged as either PAL or NTSC so the player knows whether to telecine the original 24p to NTSC or speed it up to PAL when the player outputs the interlaced signal. (this requirement is kind of old as most new players and HD TV can handle the original 24p).
In HD-DVD/PAL or NTSC project no problem, the clip shows up as 23.98 fps in asset window, and 25fps or 29.97fps respectively in asset inspector.
Per documentation, 24 fps QuickTime assets will be re-encoded and will not longer be 24p when you build the project.
Question 1. How is it done? Will the original 24p be preserved, in case of PAL just simply labeled now as 25p (i.e. clip playback sped up 4%) or will they attempt to preserve clip duration by manufacturing some extra frames?
In case of NTSC will there simply be a flag telling the player this is 24p material so telecine in on the fly, or will they write telecined footage to the disk.
Documentation suggests that in order to preserve 24p material, one should import 24p assets in MPEG-2 (that would indicate that the answer to the first question is, no we do preserve the original 24p media).
Well I transcoded the original QT clip in Compressor to 24fps/MPEG-2 asset, and it shows as such in QT inspector. (there is no Compressor option to select either NTSC or PAL flagging in the output contrary to what DVD Studio documentation implies).
Well that clip can be imported into NTSC project but not PAL (presumably because it is quietly labeled as NTS). What I don't understand now is:
Q2: why this clip is labeled now as 29.97 fps in both assets and asset inspector window? That would imply that the original 24p will not be preserved and DVD studio will write the actual 29.97fts stream to the disk. Correct?

If you give DVDSP a 24p QuickTime movie (an .mov file), your second guess is correct: DVDSP's internal encoder adds 3:2 pulldown into the resulting file to create a telecined, 29.97 MPEG-2 video stream.
If you provide DVDSP with a Compressor-encoded 24p MPEG-2 file (an .m2v file) DVDSP sees that as a 29.97 non-drop frame stream because DVD-Video (for NTSC) must be playable as 29.97, so, yes, Compressor simply adds flags that tell the DVD player where to add 3:2 pulldown during playback. DVDSP, like a DVD player, reads those flags upon import but the video stream - as you've determined by playing it in QT - is still 23.98 fps.
This is extremely confusing, I admit, because the manual adds to the confusion - it's flat out wrong, if memory serves - but trust me, if you're looking to maintain 24p playback, using Compressor-encoded assets is the way to go.

Windows PARTIALLY reconises iPOD - Yes to iTunes, No to Windows Explorer...

Right, I've read all of the posts on the fourms about connection to Windows, but this one is slightly different.
My ipod nano (4gb), has been working just fine for a couple of months (has just been replaced by Apple). I use it primarily for music through iTunes, but also sometimes as a portable hard drive.
All of iTunes and music is stored on my PC at home, but I also connect nearly every day to the PC's at my university.
Ok - so I'm sitting right now at the uni with my ipod connected (to charge), and the uni machines immediately pick it up and add it as a device. It is currently showing in Windows Explorer, and I can view it, edit it, and access all of the information that is currently on it - no problem.
The problem happened yesterday at home. For the first time ever, when connected my PC no longer recognises it properly. When you connect it initially, you get the "new device" sound from Windows, and the "new hardware" icon in the system tray pops fine. If I have Windows explorer open, it shows the Ipod fine, and allocates it a drive letter.
HOWEVER, after about 5 or 6 seconds, the ipod entry in Windows Explorer disappears again, never to be seen again. From this point on, it is inaccessible through Windows explorer.
FURTHERMORE, iTunes still picks it up fine! Even after it has disappeared from Windows explorer, it is still sitting there in the left hand menu of iTunes just fine. I can still access and update ok within iTunes - from the iTunes point of view, there doesn't seem to be any problem at all.
Therefore I am extremely confused.
It has been a couple of weeks since I last used the ipod with my home machine. The ONLY thing that has changed, is the SP2 updates which the machine automatically downloaded and updated. Therefore, I am concerned that this is the direct cause. I use Norton Internet Security 2006 on my machine, and it kicks up all sorts of fuss, if you don't have Windows updater set to automatic. I am aware of several Windows updates that it is has downloaded automatically (which you can see installing during the shut-down sequence).
* I can eliminate my apple data cable, as it is working fine on the PC that I am using right now.
* I can eliminate the ipod itself, as again, this is working fine with the PC that I am using right now.
* I can eliminate my USB ports on my home machine, as they too work fine with several other flash sticks connected to them.
* I have NOT downloaded or installed the recent 23.6.06 ipod updater which seems to be causing everyone lots of bother!
If I disconnect and reconnect the ipod, Windows Explorer, then briefly picks it up again, but then loses it again after about 6 seconds!
Also - the ipod is picked up fine (when connected) in Device Manager. It is listed under the "disk drives" icon, and when probed, Device Manager claims that it is working properly.
Also - the ipod is listed under the "safely remove hardware" icon in the sys tray. It simply isn't given a drive letter, which is the only apparent problem.
I remain CONFUSED, as it to what is partially blocking my ipod - it is clearly linked to Windows Explorer, and my guess is that some sort of security feature is causing it not to have a drive letter. I have Norton in charge of my security settings, and have mostly disengaged Windows in-house security settings.
I would be VERY, VERY grateful if someone can please help me, or let me know if they have suffered the same problem, and identified the resolution.
If I can't find an answer - I will try the 5 R's - which I didn't have time to do yesterday, and update if this is successful.

When using itunes - I had thought that you could literally dump ALL of your music into the itunes library and purely select what you want to appear on you ipod, by selecting the check-boxes, next to each track listed in the main library!?
I have my ipod full all of the time - and I would like to think that I can add more to my itunes library than actually appears on the ipod itself. However, I find that when I add a new folder to the itunes library - if I update my track listings by unchecking the older stuff in the itunes library that I want to remove from the ipod, and leaving the new stuff checked - when you click on update ipod - it does not delete the old "unchecked in itunes" stuff as I want it, and merely tries to add the new tracks. Because the ipod is already full - it cannot continue, and tried to offer a compromise of adding as much as it can etc etc.
The only way I have found to remedy this so far, is to physically "clear" all of the unwanted songs from the itunes library (but keeping the files where they are located on the HD), and then adding the new tracks/folders - and then itunes DOES delete the removed songs from the library, and adds the new ones.....
Is there a better way of doing this?

yeah, i'm wondering about that too. the settings
in that preference tab are (mostly) stored on the
ipod itself, which is how if you switch an ipod to
"manually manage" on one PC, it connects manually to
a different PC also. so, initially, we're going to be
trying to work out which PCs (home or Uni) you're
getting the anomalous behavior on.
perhaps take a note of what preferences you've got
engaged when you're plugged into one of the uni PCs,
too? that might help with the untangling process.

ITunes 10.6 has stopped working on windows 7

I just bought this Lenovo H415 desktop with windows 7 home premium.
I installed a earlier version of iTunes and it worked fine. Then I updated it to the latest 10.6 version, and it gives me the following error after I click "agree" for the agreements whenever I start it.

I've been unable to use my iTunes ever since upgrading to v10.6 Today with the new roll out of v10.6.1 I ran the fresh update hoping the issue would be resolved... After the update, Same CRASH issue at opening... I was able to FIX this on my own after messing around with an extremely confusing support article. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717
Try doing this troubleshoot and see if it helps you, it worked great for me! After I moved the first folder location listed below, my iTunes was fixed! I have since deleted that folder I had moved earlier and iTunes it's still working like a charm. I've also re-wrote the instructions for you more clearly then apple did.
Remove iTunes Preference files
Some of the files that iTunes uses to store it's settings and preferences may be unusable and cause issues. iTunes has two folders where it's preferences are saved. Move one of the folders to another folder location ie. (my documents, etc.) and try opening and running itunes to test. This is to see if the issue persists after removing these files. If the issue does not persist, simply delete the moved folder and enjoy using iTunes! However, If the issue still persists, move the folder back to where it was originally and try the same process again, this time moving the second folder. The location for the two preference folders are:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes

Before 8.3 update when I saved photos they were added to my camera roll. Then I could access the photo I wanted from any app. Now when I SAVE a photo it is not added to the camera roll at all. iCloud photo is on. AND my Photo Stream is GONE entirely.

Hi all. Since updating my iphone 6 a couple days ago, I have discovered awful glitches in photos. When I save photos they do not get added to my camera roll. My Camera Roll and Photo Stream used to match. I would take a photo on the camera and I would see it on my photo stream. Yesterday, I added an edited photo to my camera roll by saving it (I thought). But it was not there. In the past, if I wanted a photo to post in any app, from Twitter to Facebook to Yelp, in order to retrieve it easily (if I had a lot of photos on my phone) I would sometimes text it to myself and then save it. It would be added to my camera roll. Then, when any app asked me to upload a photo, I could find it right at the beginning of my camera roll photos. Now, when I save a photo it does not appear on my camera roll. I discovered this yesterday when posting a Yelp review. I found the photo I wanted to use on my camera roll and it was way back at the beginning of the camera roll. I edited the photo. I saved it. It did not get added to my camera roll. So then I looked for the photo on the camera roll where I had originally found it way back at the beginning. The edited version of the photo was gone. Could not find my photo to upload to Yelp. Then I discovered it was the same with every other app on the phone.
PHOTO STREAM DISAPPEARED! This was my main problem and primary question until I tried to resolve the issue. I saw a message on my phone that said (I thought) that I needed to connect my phone to my laptop to restore icloud backups. So I manually connected my phone to my Mac Pro Laptop (2011) and backed up my photos. I made sure iCloud was turned on for photos. I have it set to Download and Keep Originals. It is also set to Upload to My Photo Stream. And iCloud sharing is turned on.
WHEN I connected my phone to my computer I got a message on my phone about setting it up for personal hotspot and it would not complete the update unless I replied. At first i did set it up, but it seemed to be an issue, so I simply let my phone and computer use my home wifi network. I don't need the personal hotspot, but it seemed to affect the photo issue further.
Now where I used to see Photo Stream and Camera Roll, it simply says All Photos. I am extremely confused. This is a mess. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I restored it twice, once from icloud backup and then from my computer back up. I just restored again and set it up as a new iphone and now my photos are saving again. I was then able to sync apps and music from my itunes to my phone... So happy you wouldn't believe!!
