Extremely High Fan Speed

A few times in the past month I've left my computer on and left the room, only to return to a computer that won't "wake" from hibernation and has an unbelievably high cooling fan speed. It's not like the normal hum of a fan, it's almost like it's a room-sized air conditioner is running. The fan is moving (or sounds like it's moving) massive amounts of air. The Power Mac won't stop unless I press and hold the power button until it shuts down. I've read many posts about fan noise, but nothing like what I've experienced. Is anyone familiar with this problem?
PowerMac G5 2.3Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.5GB RAM, 250 GB HD

Hello, thread viewers.
I also have a G5 (dual 2.7Ghz) which is stock, from Apple, with 2GB RAM and the same intermittent problem of "freezing" while sleeping. The fans are running at full speed when I find the machine like this, though the case isn't particularly hot (making me think the temperature feedback has failed more than that the processors are cooking).
Extensive examination of the system log has revealed no obvious common message prior to this situation. As it happens only once or twice per month and I cannot predictably reproduce it, I cannot guess as to what is causing the problem. If I recall, it occurred with OS 10.3 as well as each release of 10.4.x.
I have run every test I can think of without an obvious problem. I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM. I have repaired permissions and verified disc status multiple times without change (and without detecting any unusual errors). I am a veteran Mac user and I cannot think of further diagnostic routines to get to the bottom of this vexing problem.
I don't have odd peripherals attached, and the ones I do have are usually off (FireWire drives, for example). I have tried several times to ssh and rlogin from other machines to the system when it's in this state without avail. The computer simply fails to respond to these commands, as well as to ping requests. The core OS is not responsive to outside prodding.
Anyhow, I can say that, at least in my case, the solution to this problem is definitively NOT the usual suspects, as outlined above. I am reluctant to give the machine back to Apple at this point because (1) without an obvious trigger or cause, the repair is likely not to fix the problem, and (2) I don't want to spend the time cloning, cleaning, then reinstalling my system for a shot-in-the-dark hope that they'll replace some faulty component that can fool the diagnostic software into thinking it's OK.
Please post any progress made so we can focus our efforts! Best of luck! I'll be following this topic anxiously!

I have a MAc book pro intel based, the fan goes on whirling at the hihgest possible speed even when there is about 30% of cpu usage i tried the SMC and the PRAM reset but it hasn't helped me at all.
Does any one ave any idea how to fix this problem?

  • Mac mini slow and high fan speeds

Hello!  I have a 2011 mid range mac mini and love the machine, however I have noticed a few things.  First off, it seems to be a bit on the slow side when multitasking.  I have the standard 4 gigs of ram installed, but running programs like MS Word and Safari at the same time, the machine seems to struggle a bit.  Also I have noticed when doing a lot of file transfers via USB, the fan will kick up to high gear for a few minutes and then drop down.  Is there something wrong or is this normal?  I'm doing a time machine backup of 120Gigs, have safari open and activity monitor open.
Activity monitor states 1.16Gigs free, 792MB wired, 961.4MB active, 1.12GB inactive, 2.84GB used.  VM size is 150GB, page ins are 962, outs are 380kb, swap used is 10.5MB.  Right now the fan seems to have slowed to a mid range mode of some sort and is not in high gear.  Thanks!

How many apps you instaled? how many pictures videos and time you get usigm it? let them a litlle sleep, and your mac nmini will ne wel.
As far as the fan is concerned, it will rev up and down
based primarily on CPU load.  If something is using
up a lot of processor, it gets hot and therefor the fan
speeds up to cool it down, or atleast maintain a safe temp.
When the fan revs up, open Activity Monitor and see how
much processor resources are being used and look at
the list to see if any one process is using up CPU.  This
can also give an idea of what may be slowing things down
    as well.
And yes, when doing a lot of file transfers, things may
possibly rev up a bit if it is continuous for a period of time.

  • High fan speed (but not 100%) following hard drive upgrade

    Hi,
I recently upgraded the hard drive on my 2007 Mac Mini to a 320Gb Western Digital Scorpio Black. Since then, the computer's fan has been very annoying. The fan is not running at 100% all the time, but it ramps up very quickly when the computer is under the lightest of loads. Simply scrolling a webpage will send the fan speed up to around 4500 - 5000 rpm.
My first instinct was that the 7200 rpm drive was creating too much heat, but the temperatures are all fine with the hard drive around 30 - 35 degrees C and the CPU around 35 - 40 degrees C, at a fan speed of 1500 rpm. The temperatures drop down to the 20s when the fan ramps up.
The problem is as described in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
"The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated."
I've followed the reset SMC procedure several times and yet the problem persists. Can anyone help me to solve this problem? Given the low hard drive temperatures and the fact that the fan is spinning up without disk activity, I'm hoping the drive isn't to blame. I'm getting fairly experienced at working inside the mini, having done three memory upgrades and two hard drive changes, but I would still like to avoid opening it and changing the disk again.
    Thanks,
    David.

Same thing happened to me.  Upgraded HD and RAM, fan spins up at a mere scroll of a web page.
I checked the usual suspects -- vents, foam "T", physical placement, cables back in place.
Also, I went back to the original equipment and found it still "wound up" quickly.
Another data point -- when the fan is accelerating and when at speed, the air coming out of the vents is not very warm.  Windows laptops I use discharge very warm air when the fans spin up.  Could the calibration of the CPU temp guage be off?

  • Too high fan speeds? 15" late 2011 MPB

    Hi!
I bought my new 15" MacBook Pro in the end of november, and it is therefore the late 2011 version.
I have huge problems with the fans, though. Since day one, I have always thought that the computer was kind of loud, in comparision to my 2009 13" MacBook Pro, but just thought that since this new computer is more powerful, with the i7 CPU and everything, it was normal.
Now, a little more than two months later, I have had enough. I have tried using Google to find an answer to this extremely annoying problem, but everyone is saying the same thing. Reset the SMC, reinstall OS X, install Fan Control apps, etc. I have tried everything, and nothing works as it should do.
When in idle, with nothing but Finder on, the average temps and fan speeds are:
    CPU: 52°C
    CPU Heatsink: 47°C
    GPU: 45°C
    Left fan: 3700 RPM
    Right fan: 2600 RPM.
I have tried using Fan Control apps (smcFanControl and Fan Control), resetting SMC, etc.
If I look in the activity monitor, everything looks normal. Nothing that spikes out of the ordinary. Every time, it is the activity monitor app that has the highest percentage or CPU percentage.
When having Safari and my mail client Sparrow on, and just casually browsing on the internet, the average temps and fan speeds are:
    CPU: 64°C
    CPU Heatsink: 60°C
    GPU: 49°C
    Left fan: 4300 RPM
    Right fan: 3200 RPM
I would understand if I had these temps, fan speeds and noises if I were playing a graphic demanding game, or using Photoshop and Xcode.
    Computer spec:
    Intel Core i7 @ 2,4 Ghz
    8 GB RAM-memory
    AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1GB
    750 GB Hard Drive
    Late 2011
I am writing here and explaining my problem since I am not sure if I should go to an Apple Store and let them deal with it. Maybe there's nothing wrong. Maybe these temps and fan speeds are normal, and then I just have to adjust. Otherwise, I know that there is something wrong, and I will let Apple fix it.
Thank you in advance for any help!
    I appreciate it.
    Regards, Anton

Agree with Ogelthorpe. You have some type of hardware problem.
More then likely the heatsink that removes the heat from both the CPU and GPU is malfunctioning and has been from the first day.
I'm running a 15" 2.2 i7 with 8GB RAM 120GB SSD 500GB 5400RPM HDD and right now my CPU is 41c GPU is 34c and I have Chrome, Lightroom, DNG converter, Thunderbird,  and Word open.
Yes take it in and get it fixed.
I would of taken it back the day after I bought it, compared it to the units siting on the floor of the store I bought it and then asked for a new one.

  • Imac high fan speed and goes to sleep 10sec after wake-up

    Hi,
Since today my imac's fan speed is high (optical fan and cpu fan speed at: 4000rpm)
Done a hardware test wich gives me 4SNS/1/40000001:IDSR-0.000 indicating something with logic board. According to istat all my temperatures are below 35°C (95°F). istat has readings for the cpu and optical drive temp (both around 26°C)
On top of that if I put my imac to sleep after wakeup (give or take) 10sec later it would go to sleep again. tried the smc reset procedure. no success
Any other tricks to try or just go for an exchange? (imac was bought on 2feb2010)

I've had this problem since replacing the MLB in my iMac a few weeks ago. Initially brought in for repair when the CPU fan came on at 4k rpm and stayed on even after SMC reset and nvram reset. First replacement MLB was a dud, second corrected the fan problems. Now I'm having the sleep issue, I can't tie it to any particular process. Initially I thought it was graphics related as it would go to sleep during graphics intensive work, but yesterday it was doing it when just copying data to an external drive. The temperatures of the CPU and the GPU diode are within spec. I now use a fan controller to keep the CPU fan at 2100rpm and the HD fan at 2100rpm and I don't have the problem. From what I can tell now is that a sensor is incorrectly reporting temperatures intermittently. It may not be the MLB or the graphics card specifically, but the cable connecting the sensor to the board. I ran AHT after the last time it did this and it failed a sensor, but after running ASD on the machine it passed all the hardware. I'm bringing it back into my shop later this month and if i can remember i'll post here with the resolution, not much I can do at home beyond software diagnostics.

  • Kernel_task high cpu usage, high fan speed, and low cpu tempterature

    Hi,
I've noticed that a lot of people have been having trouble with the kernel_task process, but I couldn't quite find a situation similar to mine (most seem temperature related).
Here is the situation (15' MBP, mid-2010):
    - on boot (while the apple logo is shown), the fans speed suddenly jumps, and stays there, even if the computer has been off for a while.
    - boot takes a little over a minute, which is considerably slower than what I was used to before today
    - when finally started-up, the activity monitors shows kernel_task using between 160-180% of the CPU!
    - temperatures are shown to be around 30C, except for the mem controller at 40C (still very low temp), but the fan speed is arround 6000rpm for both fans.
    - this happened out of nowhere, as I woke the mpb from sleep this morning.
    Since then I've tried:
    - multiple reboots
    - install all updates
    - uninstall flash player (some people where having trouble with that)
    - empty the system cache with Onyx (reported as a cause of slow boot)
    - reset PRAM
    - reset SMC
    - put some ice packs under the mpb to cool things even further!
And so far, nothing has worked! I've had this laptop for 1 year, and nothing had ever failed. I upgraded to lion a few weeks ago, and everything had been working fine since the upgrade. This really happened out of nowhere, and none of the many forums I have read could offer a solution, and cals to apple support do not seem to yield better results (though I scheduled a call with them at 9am this morning, we'll see).
Has anyone had a similar set of problems?
I appreciate any help or advice you may have!
    Thanks!
    -Sebastien

I have the same issue (2.66 2010 MBP Hi-Res Anti Glare.)
I took it to Apple Store Covent Garden, JUST within warranty.
18 days later my machine has a new Main Logic borad, heat sensors, top case, palm rest. etc.
    I turned it on.
The fans kicked in. All processors at 50%, big ole kernal task.
I took it back, geniuses rest SMC and tested it under load and it was fine.
weirdly it failed diagnostics at first but then seemed fine
I came home. Fans kicked in...
I took it back. Diagnostics failed heat sensors again
Replaced logic board and heats sensors again, but more carefully this time just in case, tested again.
I took it home. FANS FANS FANS.
Last time I was in the store I was told my machine was fine and had been thoroughly tested.
    In mac store, no fans.
I erased hard drive and clean installed Lion
    FANS
I replaced hard drive with OCZ SSD, clean LION.
    Fans
    Software update
    SMC
    PRAM
    permissions
    Onyx complete clean/maintenace
    FANS/CPU
switched back to Snow Leopard SSD
    PRAM SMC ONYX etc.
    FANS/CPU
    replaced RAM, memtest-ed. fine, FANS
gonna try again but up to nearly 2 months of all my spare time trying to shut this thing up so I can sell it.

  • NX6800-TD256E PCI Express - NOISE, NO ULTRA COPPER, very high FAN SPEED

Well I also have bought a NX6800-TD256E PCI Express.
The card was advertised at MSI.COM.TW with ULTRA COPPER and adjustable Fan Speed.
One week ago on the website of MSI the card had Ultra Copper. Now, not any more.  :hypecrite:
When I bought this card 4 weeks ago:
    1. the website information about this card was with UltraCopper
    2. the website of the dealer was with UltraCopper
    3. the packing is with ultra hopper
    4. now I can not adjust the fan speed
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/vga/vga/pro_vga_detail.php?UID=639
Even the packing shows ULTRA COPPER.
Nothing true, and this for EURO 365.00. Shortly in my mind this is unfair competition. There is a law in Europe: "law against unfair competition".  Maybe not in the US and TW.
Who else does have the same trouble ?
Is there a solution with MSI ?

This is a user to user forum only, no MSI techs or representatives are present.

  • High fan speeds and high GPU temperature during idle

    Hi,
I'm hearing slight similar problems around this subject but this one seems to be obscure.
My iMac 20inch (Early 2008 - 8,1) has just passed by the 3 year mark now and only yesterday just suddenly started haven't this weird gain in fan speeds mainly on the CPU.
Checking the temperature in iStat shows that its coming mainly from the GPU (GPU - 79c / GPU diode - 91c / GPU heatsink - 83c) and that's from looking as I type this.
I've done the SMC reset a few times and the PRAM reset too, but that's only managed to make things worse...occasionally on startup after the resets the screen will blank out and ask me to reset.
Below are screenshots from istats of the state of my iMac during idle:
Hope someone can help and this be of some help to others in the same situation.

I think a SMC reset will handle this for you. If not then also do a PRAM reset.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Gtx 680 high temps and high fan speed

I have my card since a few months and I always thought it was normal, until 2 days ago when a friend came over with his card an we did some tests to compare.
When I play most games my card is at about 70-80c and 70-80% fan speed.
We did a simple burn in test with furmark and after 2 minutes my card was at 84C and 78% fan speed while his was in the 60C range while staying quiet.
Of course his card was fresh out of the box and his case is bigger, so more spacing, but mine has more cooling, especially for the gpu.  Could it be the thermal paste?  I see people having way better results with this card than what I am getting...

Quote from: dude on 25-March-13, 01:01:37
Since it is a pretty new card I think it's airflow in your case. I read somewhere here someone gave instructions for replacing thermal paste.
My card is about 6 months old.  It's just that I always thought it was normal, even if I was disappointed with how loud the card was, since I bought this one espcially for the good cooling and low noise that I've read in so many reviews and tests before buying.
However, my friend's card is brand new.  He came at my place so I could build his computer.  My case is a full atx tower, while his case is etax.  But, my cooling was done and redone many times, espcially since my card was loud and hot, I decided to change my cooling (which did not even change 1C).  I clean my case really often and my fans are well arranged to get the best airflow possible, while my friend's case has less fans and are not optimzed (intake-outake...) to have the best airflow.
Maybe the spacing really is for something, but 84C in 2 minutes of furmark with almost 80% fan speed is a lot.

  • High CPU usage, overheating, and high fan speed on DV4-1125nr

the process igfxsrvc.exe is running in between 30 and 40 of my CPU. my total CPU is about 55% or so while idle. i tried disabling that driver, and it's CPU went down to about 20, but my total CPU was still at the same place, if not a little higher. also, my computor is overheating a lot, and my fan is constantly running on it's highest speed. i do not believe that this is caused by a dirty vent. also, I have checked the version of the graphics driver and the BIOS(both of which i saw the suggestion to update by several people having similar problems) and both are up to date. what is the problem? am i being highjacked/ infested with viruses and i dont know it despite having already ran all my virus protection and anti-malware programs? someone please help before i have to take it to geek squad! thank you in advance!

    Hello,
I decided to sacrifice a little bit of performance for the sake of cool temperatures and silent fan. I have HP DV6, with AMD Turion RM-74 and HD4650.
So, Yes, You will loose up to 15 percent Your CPU power, but heyh, this processor is so fast that You will barelly notice the change. You will still watch HD content with 720p and everything else smoothly. Note, that gaming will be harder part but consider Your laptop not as a device created for heavy gaming.
At one point or another, during games, someday Your notebook inevitably colapse. It's just not meant for gaming, no matter what the specs are...
So, how to reduce Your notebook temps:
    (i) Power Options -> More power options,
(ii) Balanced plan -> Change settings,
    (iii) Change advanced power settings
(iv) Processor power management -> Maximum processor state -> On Battery - 50 percent, Plugged in - 85 percent.
    (vi) Save changes and close.
Now, mine temperatures are - idle 48, heavy load - 57, extremelly heavy load (HD 720p content) - 62-63. (At the moment my CPU cores are at 47 celsius).
CPU still works fast, not so fast as it is working on 100 percent, but hey, fan is silent, and if You want gaming - go to Your desktop pc, leave notebook for lighter tasks, even though the notebooks specs are high,
it simply cannot handle the heat.
    Best regards.

  • IPhoto 9.4.3 high fan speeds/ high cpu usage.

For about a month now, my iPhoto has been acting up. My iPhoto CPU usage idles at about 30% and as soon as I start using iPhoto, the CPU usage can go as high as 430%.. This causes the fans to spin at 6000RPM and eventually iPhoto will slow down and I'll have to force quit.
    I have tried:
    - repairing the iPhoto library
    - creating a new library
    - re-installing OSX Mountain Lion
    - re-installing OSX Mountain Lion and then installing a fresh copy of iPhoto
    - rebuilding the iPhoto library with iPhoto Library Manager
Nothing has fixed this issue. I have exhausted all of my options and I would greatly appreciate any help.
    Cheers,
    Joey
    Mac specs:
    Early 2011 MBP
    Intel Core i7 2.2GHz
    8GB 1333MHz RAM
    256GB Crucial M4 SSD
    750GB Seagate HDD
    15 inch Hi-Res AG Display

Did you remember to quit iPhoto before deleting the caches and to log off and on again? WIthout logoff or reboot cleaning the caches may have no effect.
iPhoto is keeping second, hidden cache in $TMPDIR. Try to clear that as well.
You can only open that cache from the Terminal.
    Quit iPhoto.
Open a Terminal window and enter
    open $TMPDIR
    and hit "return".
In the window that opens remove the folder com.apple.iPhoto.
log off and on again, and retry.
Im thinking that this is a software bug.. but I just cant figure out why its happening on a fresh install of OSX / iPhoto. Seems bizzare.
I am using the same iPhoto version on a similar early 2011 MBP Mac without problems. Maybe the file type of your photos and/or videos makes a difference. What media kind are in your iPhoto/Aperture library? Videos? Raw? Jpeg?

  • T420s High Fan Speed on Idle

Even with TPFancontrol installed, when sitting at idle, my 420s fan runs high. I am on Windows 8.1 with no maintenence in the background.
Any idea what causes the fan and CPU to increase sitting idle on Windows 8.1.
btw; this is a fresh install with most of the Lenovo stuff removed. The Bios is updated. Hard Drive is Samsung EVO SSD.
As soon as I touch the computer, the fan stops.... CPU goes down to 63 C...
    Thanks,
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The issue is with Windows 8.1 maintenance on idle feature. I deleted the scheduled task and resolved my fan issue. I even removed TPFan as I no longer needed it. (Didn't work for this anyway)
I prefer to perform my own maintenance so unless removing this scheduled task gives me performance issues, I prefer the silence.
    Thanks for the help...

  • High Fan speeds and draining battery

Have any of you experienced this? Plug in the MPB when the battery is close to drained (10%). From that point onwards, till it charges to about 30% (some times beyond that to about 50%), the fans roar (literally) at close to 6000 rpm (and most of the time it is more than 4500 rpm). The laptop becomes an embarrassment to use, particularly because I use it (most of the time) in front of customers (typically CxOs). When this happens, the health of the battery is sharply eroded, and I need to replace the battery every 4-6 months.
Support from Apple is whole different story.
    Thank you!

*This is a problem I have experienced for about 18 months now. AppleCare expired late last year (2010). When it was in warranty, Apple replaced 3 batteries (from what I first reported the problem till AppleCare expired). Lots of parts (logic board, heat sensors etc., apart from the battery) changed. Things I have tried:*
*1. System Controller Reset as described above.*
*2. Battery use best practices (as described above)*
*3. Complete system diagnostics run by Apple*
*4. Reinstall OS on multiple occasions*
    *Other Observations:*
*1. Finder consumes more than 80% CPU when this happens, please note reinstall of OS does not help*
*2. CPU Temp is upwards of 70 deg C when this happens. My normal CPU tep is upwards of 60 deg C.*
*3. GPU diode temp is above 70 deg C as well. My normal GPU diode temp is usually close to or above 70 deg C.*
*4. No other applications running. So, Firefox, Office for Mac etc are all closed. Only apps open are usually Activity Monitor and Adium. Adium does not seem to make any difference.*
*Finally, how does one connect with Apple Customer Relations? I see just Customer Service, which is support. I do not see any escalation point beyond that.*
    *Regarding Support:*
*1. Apple Store support has been cosmetic in this instance. Replace battery was the solution on the first two occasions.*

  • Abnormal high fan speed  IMAC G5

suddenly the fans runs fast as a hairdryer , stops only when I put it in sleep mode.
    can anyone help??

    Hi Jossmac
Reset your iMac's SMC exactly as described in the Apple Support article below:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
The last G-5 iMac's were built in 2005 and the 2006-2008 model's are Intel iMac's, to prevent confusion please correct your profile to read "Intel iMac 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo" or something like that!
