Extremely high loads doing minimal tasks

Hi.
This is doing my head in. Just upgraded after a couple of years on a celeron dual core netbook (running Arch of course) to a Lenovo E555 which has an AMD Kaveri A8-7100. I was expecting it to be night and day. Unfortunately the Lenovo is so sluggish as to be virtually unusable. It works fine in windows 8. This is uptime for just using chromium and downloading a Steam game. This is something I used to do on the netbook no trouble. On the Lenovo it is virtually at a standstill. Any ideas what is going wrong? I installed the Catalyst propriety driver a couple of days, but the behaviour is seemingly the same with or without the driver...
Can provide logs as required. I am not willing to go back to windows..but at the moment this Arch install is not really usable.
This behaviour occurs on gnome and KDE and openbox...

Well first things first, the performance on the wired is comparable to windows :
15:13:48 up  3:26,  2 users,  load average: 2.62, 1.49, 1.26
I'm assuming that the constant network IO is somehow causing a high system load. Probably to do with the realtek driver I guess. I've asked a question over at https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new/issues/44 to see if they understand what is causing it. Unfortunately replacing the WIFI card is not that easy. I would love to sort out the issue...we'll see.....
I imagine that Portal 2 was working okay because it wasn't hammering the network connection?

  • Slow KVM and extremely high load

I've just installed Archlinux on a i7 920 with 24 GB of ram. Not the fastest machine in the world but it performs well.
But Virtual machines in KVM is quite slow and it shows a high load for the easiest of tasks. For instance, when installing CentOS 5 (or 6) (and no other virtual machines running) the load on my machine is ~25. Installing the OS takes about 15 minutes.
    The setup is this:
    3 1,5TB disk in raid5 (software)
    lvm
/storage is ext4 (and a part of lvm) and this is the place where I have the disk images for the Virtual Machines.
When the Virtual machine (I only have one) top tells me that qemu-kvm is using 20% cpu.
    Any hints?

A common reason of high CPU load is qemu-only mode instead of kvm, as qemu emulates every instruction.
First of all, check if your kvm module is loaded:
    $ lsmod|grep kvm
    kvm_intel 125165 0
    kvm 361546 1 kvm_intel
Then, check if your VM is actually using KVM.
Enter the VM's monitor and type "info kvm":
QEMU 0.13.0 monitor - type 'help' for more information
    (qemu) info kvm
    info kvm
    kvm support: enabled

  • OEM High Load Widget -- does it work with Windows 7?

The README page for the OEM High Load Widget ( http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/oem/grid-control/emgridcontrol-10-101399.html ) does not list Windows 7 as a supported O/S. Has anyone been able to get it to work on Windows 7 (64-bit)?
My new PC at work is running Windows 7 64-bit O/S. I've had good luck in getting everything I was running on my previous Win XP SP3 machine but the OEM High Load Widget is not connecting.
I have found that widget to be quite useful and really would like to be able to use it.

  • Extremely high memory usage on ideapad u310

    Hi all,
I've got a problem with my ideapad u310 touch running windows 8.1. When doing completely nothing (just staring at the desktop with no programs running) my laptop uses ~55% of ram. I find this extremely high, when i open a few chrome tabs and listen to some music, maybe open a powerpoint it even rises to 80+%. My Medion erazer laptop(also running 8.1) with 4GB ram uses ~65% with the same usage and ~35% while doing nothing. I deleted almost every lenovo programm except energy management and OneKey recovery and i disabled as much programs as possible on startup but there's almost no difference.
Now, I don't really care about the high percentages but what I do care about is that it gets extremely slow when 80% of the ram is in use. Does anybody know what i can do about this? I already tried the refresh windows option but that didn't help. Or am I just stuck with a device that has very very very poor multitasking performance.

    hi spromper,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Opening Task Manager will show you which application utilizes the RAM.
Also Doing a clean boot will help on freeing up RAM

  • 2008 R2/ Win7 Offline Files Sync causing High Load on server

    Hi Everyone,
I have recently been investigating extremely high CPU Usage from the System Process on my company's main File Cluster.
We managed to track SRV2.sys Threads causing high CPU load within the system process, but was having issues identifying why this was the case.
As per Microsoft's direction via support call, we have installed the latest SRV2.sys Hotfixes, but this does not appear to have allivated the issue we are experiencing. We have also added more CPU and Memory into both nodes, which has not helped either.
We have since managed to create a system dump and is being sent to MS Support for analysis.
I have noticed the following that appears to happen on our cluster:
Whenever our CAD/Design department run certain functions within their apps running on a windows 7 client (apps include MicroStation, Revit, AutoCAD etc) we see a massive spike and flatline of the system process.
We found several users with Windows 7 clients that have Configured Offline File to sync an entire Network Volume (some volumes are 2TB Plus, so would never fit on a users computer anyway, i was quite shocked when I found this). How we spotted this was through
Resource Monitor, the System Process was trolling through all the folders and files in a given volume (it was "reading every single folder). Now, while this was the system process, we could identify the user by using the Open Files view in Server Manager's
    Share and Storage Management tool.
I have done a fair bit of research and found that a lot of CAD/Drawing applications in the market have issues with using SMB2 (srv2.sys). When reviewing the products that we use, I noticed that a lot of these products actually recommended disabling SMB2
and reverting to SMB1 on File Server and/or the clients.
I have gone down the path of disabling SMB2 on all Windows 7 clients that have these CAD Applications installed to assist with lowering the load (our other options are to potentially shift the CAD Volumes off our main file cluster to further isolation these
performance issues we have been experiencing.) We will be testing this again tomorrow to confirm that the issue is resolved when mass amounts of CAD users access data on these volumes via their CAD Application.
We only noticed the issue with Offline Files today with trying to sync an ENTIRE Volume. My questions are:
Should Offline File sync's really cause this much load on a File Server?
Would the the size of the volume the sync is trying to complete create this additional load within the system process?
What is the industry considered "Best Practice" regarding Offline Files setup for Volumes which could have up to 1000+ users attached? (My personal opinion is that Offline Files should only be sync of user "Personal/Home" Folders
as they users themselves have a 1 to 1 relationship with this data.)
Is there an easier way to identify what users have Offline Files enabled and "actually being used" (from my understanding, Sync Center and Offline Files are enabled by default, but you obviously have to add the folders/drives you wish to sync)?
If I disable the ability for Offline Files on the volumes, what will the user experience be when/if they try to sync their offline files config after this has been disabled on the volume?
Hoping for some guidance regarding this setup with Offline Files.
    Thanks in Advance!
    Simon

    Hi Everyone,
Just thought I would give an update on this.
While we're still deploying http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2733363/en-us to
the remainder of our Windows 7 SP1 fleet, according to some Network Traces and XPerf that were sent to MS Support, it looks as though the issu with the Offline Files is now resolved.
However, we are still having some issues with High CPU with the System Process in particular. Upon review of the traces, they have found a lot of ABE related traffic, leading them to believe that the issue may also be caused by ABE Access on our File Cluster.
We already have the required hotfix for ABE on 2008 R2 installed (please see
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2732618/en-us), although we have it set to a certain value that MS believe may be too high. Our current value is set to "5", as that is the lowest level of any type of permission is set (i.e. where the lowest level of inheritance
    is broken).
I think I will mark this as resolved regarding the Offline Files issue (as it did resolve the problem with the Offline Files)...
Fingers crossed we can identify the rest of the high load within the System Process!!!

  • Extremely high memory usage after upgrading to Firefox 12

After I upgraded to Firefox 12, I began frequently experiencing Firefox memory usage ballooning extremely high (2-3GB after a few minutes of light browsing). Sometimes it will drop back down to a more reasonable level (a few hundred MB), sometimes it hangs (presumably while trying to garbage collect everything), and sometimes it crashes. Usually the crashing thread cannot be determined, but when it can be, it is in the garbage collection code ( [https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/list?signature=js%3A%3Agc%3A%3AMarkChildren%28JSTracer*%2C+js%3A%3Atypes%3A%3ATypeObject*%29] ).
I was able to capture an about:memory report when Firefox had gotten to about 1.5 GB and have attached an image.
A couple of things I've tried. I have lots of tabs open (though the Don't load tabs until selected option is enabled), so I copied my profile, kept all my extensions enabled, but closed all my tabs. I then left a page open to http://news.google.com/ and it ran fine for several days, whereas my original profile crashes multiple times a day.
I also tried disabling most of my extensions, leaving the following extensions that I refuse to browse without:
    Adblock Plus
    BetterPrivacy
    NoScript
    PasswordMaker
    Perspectives
    Priv3
However, the problem still happened in that case.
Don't know if any of this helps or not. I'm looking forward to trying Firefox 13 when it comes out.

hello, thanks for reporting back with detailed information.
from a brief look at your extensions i don't recognize any known (to me at least) memory leaking ones. in the last weeks there were also reports about the java plugin causing high memory consumption in combination with firefox 12 - in case you have it installed in firefox > addons > plugins try disabling it for a few days & test how firefox is behaving with many tabs.
& although probably not related to the memory problems you could update your graphics driver to get better results with hardware acceleration in firefox - this is the latest driver by intel for your model & os:

  • File size extremely high for .avi after render PE 9

I'm very new to PE and have tried to learn quick to redact info (faces etc) in .avi files for a government agency. I was able to open the file (in the trial version) and make the track matte by dragging the original file to the timeline then dragging it again to the video 2 timeline for the top layer, Question 1) is this the same as copy and paste or am I doubling the size already? Anyway, I was able to get the matte and everything done. Now, to Render and save... I choose computer/avi again (I need to keep it the same) and it took 1 hr 45 min to render it, that seemed long to me but maybe not... but mainly the file size was then 100,883 kb! Starting with a 29.7 kb file. This is what my question is about....could this be right? I can't use it if this is what I get. So, here are the particulars as I got G-spot and looked it up, as per serveral suggestions I saw here. I'm trying to understand the CODEC info but I fear I have a ways to go before I can figure out what I did wrong. (This is my test computer, the future work would be done on a newer, better computer).  The videos I would be working with come from various sources and will vary in length but will probably all be a kind of avi.
    Intel Pentium processor 1600 mhz
    221 mhz, 2.00 gb ram
    Microsoft windows xp sp3
    video:
    length: 0:27.261
    frms:  817
    Kbps: 28770
    pic:  720x480
    codec: dvsd dvc/dy
I appreciate any help you can give

Thanks for you response and the information was very helpful. I was able to choose and output that gave me a good file size and I do want DV-AVI (I don't remember what I chose but it worked) but, I don't see an option for DV-AVI - is that a general DV output selection, because there seem to be numerous (AVCHD, NTSC, DV STANDARD) acronyms (I have tried to understand what each is) which do I want?

Re: File size extremely high for .avi after render PE 9 created by Bill Hunt in Premiere Elements - View the full discussion
For the use of Track Matte Keying, with say a Gaussian Blur, or maybe Moasic Effect, if you have not altered the In & Out Points, then just dragging the Asset to both Video 1 and Video 2 will work fine. If you HAVE adjusted the In & Out Points, you can just click-drag from the Source Monitor, where you set those In & Out Points, and all is good. The Copy/Paste is just another way to do it.
As you are doing an "overlay," the output File Size will not be affected in any way. You are also limiting the Blur, or Effect on Video 2 to just the area "exposed" by the Track Matte, so the pixel count will not be altered.
As Steve points out, the output CODEC in the AVI will determine the output File Size. File Size is basically determined by the Timeline's Duration and by the Bit-Rate of the output file. With DV-AVI, that Bit-Rate is pretty well set, and your Timeline determines the Duration. At ~ 13GB/hour, a DV-AVI will be pretty large, but that is the nature of the beast. Also, and as Steve points out, if you are going to do additional editing, and will be Importing that file into a New Project, DV-AVI is about as good, as it gets.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

    Any answers?????

    Hi,
I have a similar issue on ODSI 10gR3 (WLS 10.3). I am having stuck threads - but, in my case it is clear that the database is down (not at the startup)
    Here is some more info:
    1. Test Connections On Reserve - Enabled
    2. Default values for other parameters
Using Oracle thin driver for the connection pool "MyPool" -
    ./wlserver_10.3/server/lib/ojdbc6.jar
    My question is:
    1. How do I avoid the stuck thread caused when the database is down? During peak load, the stuck threads are causing some service requests to fail.
I did my homework and the closest option I could find is set the statementTimeout (which is set currently to the default value of -1 i.e. never timeout). Oracle documentation (http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/111070_readme.html) says that the ojdbc6.jar supports setQueryTimeout() method.
Is there any better way to attack this problem?

  • Extremely High Temperatures

    I have a new 2011 Macbook Pro 17".
    With the i7-2760QM processor.
Anyway my CPU idle temp sits at around 65C, to me this is crazy.  No idea why it should be this high.
In addition while gaming I am seeing temps as high as 100C.
What can I do to decrease this???
    P.S.
    Running bootcamp

It would appear that it's not really "idle". My MBA when it is not doing anything out of the ordinary indicates a CPU temperature of 35°.
65° is not normal but it is far from "extremely high".
Gaming, Flash video, any processor-intensive activity is going to make it warm in a hurry, but playing HTML5 video in YouTube typically brings mine no higher than 45° or so.
It is possible an SMC reset might fix the problem, also read the following to identify a particular process that may be taxing your Air's resources:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime
Edit: I don't know why you posted this in the MacBook Air forum, I was about to verify the temps on my MBP but Mrs. Galt is busy with it

  • Extremely high latency from 4am - 12pm in Baltimore, MD

Lately for the past month I have been getting extremely high latency 1500ms+.  I am directly wired to the Actiontec router using a new cable on a confirmed working lan card.  I believe the problem maybe at the POD card.  How would I go about proving to Verizon without going through numerous transfers of people that don't have a clue?

I had the same problem since Mid-June. Seems like it's anywhere in North Eastern United States. I myself is located about 20 Minutes from Washington DC. I get the latency right around 12~50 ms on first hop to Google or verizon.net on a good day with trace route test. The people in Verizon tells me that's normal but I don't buy that because my neighbor gets around less than 20 ms, never higher. It gets progressively bad around prime time and onward. Around 12 AM it can reach from 100~400 ms on latency to Google or verizon.net server.
I am a late night gamer and need that low latency badly. Seems like most of the people I have talk to from FSC (Fios solution Center) had no idea what is the difference between Bandwidth to Latency. They just call it "Speed". I have spoken with these people for almost every night for a month and a half, when I get a hint that they have no idea what they're talking about, I just hang up and call another one up or just request a supervisor to speak with.
Here is my trace route result, I have highlight the part that are unacceptable.

I'm going to list the things I have done so that perhaps if you are having the same issue, maybe you can anticipate or maybe save you time with this issue.
    Replaced Router
This will be my 3rd Router in my possession. The odds of having 3 bad routers are astronomical but yet FSC will try to keep sending you more.
Replaced coax cable (twice), ONT, and splitter.
Once again, the problem still persist. To get these fix, I had total of 4 dispatchers. From the word of their mouth, they stated it's beyond their level and when it comes to latency the tech at verizon server will be the best people to help you.
Reset ONT by unplugging it for 5 minutes or more to pull up a new Gateway IP.
Appearently, someone were able to fix their latency issue this way but the results are mixed. Either it's a permanent fix or temporary fix or it made the problem even worse.
    Optimizing connection/wired connections
I have a gaming PC, when they ask to clear the cache to solve my problem, it's an insult. Not only it's irralavent, in order for the computer to bog down because of cache overload, I must possess a computer that is less than of Pentium 2 back from 1995.
    Anti-virus and FireWall
If these were actually the source of my problem then the high latency should be constantly bad.
Potentially hacked or other connection to your router.
While this problem can be an issue, I can see who uses the internet and even turned off the wireless. There's no way an uninvited person can slow down my connections.
The server that I am connecting to such as website and gaming server is not guaranteed by the verizon.
Yes, that is true but what are the odds of having google, verizon.net, altavista, gaming server from Steam, etc are having the latency issue all at the same time? It is as if they are blaming traffic problem on I-95 for having bad congestion on I-66. It's not relevant at all!
    Verizon in-home Agent
    Must I continue?
I will now list the solutions that others have found. Please keep in mind that these problems may not be relevant to you.
    1) Bad PON card
Good luck convincing the verizon that this is the issue. For this to be the issue, people from your neighborhood must experience the same problem. Sadly, the problem is the latency and most people will be completely unaware of the problem as long as they are "online". There were cases where group of people resolved the problem but unfortunately the problem came back again the next day because the network tech at Verizon decided to switch them back to the old one.
    2) Faulty hardware on rack
As far as I have been told, couple claimed that this has been the issue and was permitted to move their line into another rack.
    3) Switching Gateway IP
One have claimed that certain Gateway IP they have been assigned are bad. For example, the house you're trying to drive away from has a huge pothole so you have to go around it by taking a detour.
    4) Resetting the ONT by unplugging the battery
There has been claim that doing this for 5 mintues clears it up. What this actually does is it allows you to get a new Gateway IP and re-establish connections.
    5) They blocked my IP
Yes, this can happen. I have been blocked once or more perhaps because sometimes I like to purchase and download games from Steam. When I do download, it does so for about an hour to 3 hours depending on the size of the game. Whilst this is going on, my room mate watches movie on Netflex and perhaps download music on the side. Also I watch On-Demand (requires internet). Also not to mention sometimes torrent and other P2P downloads. Check to see if you are blocked.
    6) Last but not least, Verizon is purposely gimping our latency to squeeze budget.
There has been talks and speculations that since many primary account holders are not advance users. In otherwords, many would settle for just being "online". This supports the claims for having such a low standard for latency management in verizon. If so, Verizon must stop advertising their "fast" gaming gimmick that they display on their commercial.

  • OSB: ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 4080 on high load

    Hello,
I have a problem with the OSB 11.1.1.6. When I call services in the OSB with a certain load, I get the exception below. If I call the same services one by one (no high load), everything works. I didn't have this problem in the OSB 11.1.1.5.
    Any idea?

    Hi all,
I found the area to support Oracle reported a bug for this problem. I applied the patch and the problem was solved. The problem occurred when the BS called an external url in https.
The bug id is 14747231. Below is information about the bug.

With Certicom, the communication between OSB and external service is working fine. When they enable JSSE, they observe errors like the below and communication is failing:

    *** Cause ***
If the ChunkedInputStream contains a Chunk chain having a non-null chunk and the end size is 0, ChunkedInputStream does not handle the chunk correctly. This issue is addressed by Bug 14747231, which introduces new logic to handle this condition.

  • FD leaks on high load in JBOSS using Selector

We observed FD leaks when our application is moved from Geronimo to  JBOSS. Ours is a multi-threaded application getting a response from UDP server.
We were using Selector and DatagramChannel. we saw FD leak on high load. But when I removed Selector usage, the same does not leak any FDs.
Is there any known issue in JDK?
    Thanks

JBoss and Geronimo both run on top of Java.
Obviously if you are using the same Java version for both then it is unlikely to be a JDK problem.
If you are using a different version then there are too many variables to determine the cause.  So reduce the number of variables by using the same Java version.

  • Weblogic Thread hogging at  java.io.WinNTFileSystem.getBooleanAttributes at high loads

    Hi,
At high loads, we are seeing that one WebLogic thread is active on a windows native call for quite some time.. I can see the following stack statements in thread dumps taken at 10 minutes interval. This has led to slow server performance.
This happens on WebLogic 10.3.2 that is hosted in Windows Server 64 bit 2008 Enterprise Edition SP1.
The JDK used is JRockit jdk1.6.0_20-R28.3.2 (64 Bit)
Also this happens at high user loads only and also irregularly.
    Our eclipse link versions are (Implementation-Version: 1.0.1-20080905, Specification-Version: 1.0.1)
Any recommendation or pointer is appreciated.
    Now the thread dump details
