Extremely hot graphic processor

Hey Apple fans;
I did a number of searches on the boards but the closest I came, the thread was ultimately lost. Anyways, I recently got a 12" powerbook, still has 512 ram and the tempertures to my surprise have been very decent dispite what pre-purchase research indicated.
However, This morning I intsalled Warcraft III and such, and moments after I install, the graphics processor shoots up to the mid 70's (Celcius) (160+ ferenheit)
I can't find information regarding if this is a dangerous level of heat or if its' still within the normal operating tempurtures of the 12" powerbook.
The processor sits between 59-64C while playing games.
thanks for your input!
-Daniel

I'm not a Warcraft III player, but I noticed on their support site that there are alot of older patches and updates (started at http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mwr0642p ). Are you using the most current version with appropriate patches?

EDIT: Subject Title edited to reflect new topic.

That would be why. The 13inch MBP has integrated graphics meaning the one processor is doing the power of the CPU and the GPU. This causes the system to heat up fast causing the fan to kick in. This is nomal with the 13inch. The best thing you can do is by a cooling pad to help out a little.

  • Macbook pro retina gets extremely hot!

    Hey guys,
I have a Macbook Pro Retina with all the settings on max (see below). I like to play games like Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft howvere when I open these up my macbook starts going crazy! The fans all turn on and the CPU get extremely hot! I mean like 92°C hot! I opened up activity monitor and found out that when running World of Warcraft it used 140-160% of the CPU (which of course in impossible!!).
Thanks in advance for any advise!

    A few things:
    1. All macbook pros get hot (retina and non-retina).  Folks here will tell you that the system will slow down (or in extreme cases shutdown) to protect the hardware.  I find this concerning but it is what it is...
    2. Games can use multiple cores which is why you are seeing > 100%
    3. 92 celcius is hot but within the operating parameters from what I have seen
    4. Some folks use stands (anything from purchased stands to pencils) to lift the computer off of the underlying surface to allow for improved circulation.
    Hope this helps.

  • HP Pavilion dv6 (70-28TX) Air from vent EXTREMELY HOT

Hi! I recently Purchased a new HP Pavilion DV6 70-28TX Entertainment PC. However, I have noticed that after a few hours of gaming (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim), The air coming from the left side vent of the Notebook is EXTREMELY HOT. I have made sure that the Notebook is getting optimal air-flow (Using flat desk surface, not obstructing vents, etc) I was just wondering if this is normal for this Notebook? This is the only problem I have had with this PC since Purchase on Christmas Day. (Infact I have been thoroughly satisfied with it apart from this)

If it is only happening when you are playing Skyrim or similar games, it is pretty normal. While notebooks have improved in their hardware, unless they are specifically designed for gaming, they are going to generate a lot of heat. Playing a game like that makes your computer work harder than anything else you are probably throwing at it. You might try turning the graphic settings down in the game and that might help a little bit.

  • Extremely hot laptop

I have an X220 thinkpad tablet, some times my laptop gets extremely hot for no aparent reason, even when I using few basic aplications, is there any way I can fix this problem?? Thanks for you help.

    Hi again, Duriko11
This sounds like a hardware issue of sorts to me. You may wish to download and run program that can tell you the temperature of your processor, such as Core Temp, to see if your computer is getting hotter than it should. Following that test, perform a restart and run the program again to see how big the change is. Please report back here with the results so the community can advise you on where to go from there.
    Best of luck,

  • GPU Diode runs extremely hot?

I just bought a MacBook Pro and downloaded Civilizations V. I play at 1280*1080 fullscreen resolution with the lowest graphics settings. My computer (non retina display) has a Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics processor with 1 GB VRAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000, 1680 * 1050 resolution, 8 GB RAM, 2.7 GhZ quad-core processor, and a solid-state drive, so I thought playing on the lowest settings with a 1280*1080 fullscreen wouldn't tax it too much, but the GPU runs from 160-170 F and the GPU diode, whatever that is, is 180-185 F, which is worrisome to me. Usually the how-to guides say to clean your computer and stuff to cool it better, but my computer is 2 days old and my room is not dusty so I doubt that's the cause. I haven't downloaded any strange applications or anything. Interestingly, when I played with the highest graphics settings and resolution, it did not seem to raise the temperature of the GPU diode any further. Also, when I brought my big fan next to the computer and placed it on high speed, it didn't lower the temperature of the GPU diode. So maybe iStat pro is wrong, however, when I touch the top of my keyboard (above all the keys and right next to the screen) it is very hot to the touch. Is something wrong with my computer? Is 185 F safe for a GPU diode, and 175 safe for a GPU, and 145 for a CPU heatsink? Should I just not play this game?

    Hi ns180.
I've read your post and I see that I have a similar problem.
I run the Civilization V in an iMac 24 in and my Graphic Processor Diode reaches the 90 ºC (194 F). When this happen I left the game immediately. I've recently change (for second time) my hard disk and probably the last two were damage by the heat, so when I change the disk, of course, I cleaned the circuits with isopropyl alcohol and spay them with compressed air. I´m running recently, just after the last repair, the Temperature Monitor and SMC Fan Control and for sure it doesn't matter what I do, I can't reduce the temperature of the GPD. In fact, I'm writing right now, only using the Firefox and GPD is in 80 ºC. The back of the iMac, the left up corner, is very hot all the time. I put an exterior fan, a big one, and nothing... I'ts still hot the GPD. This means that I can cool the exterior of the Mac, but never the interior.
My conclusions for the moment is that may be the GPD is damaged and the best possibility is trying to change it or find other way to cool the interior of the Mac.
    Greetings from Mexico.

  • Mbpr running extremely hot

mbpr running extremely hot only in Windows. CPU is 55 idle, 104c load in realtemp. windows 7 64x
Running anything processor intensive makes it burn. I saw this issue happening with others also so I don't see any point to return. Will there be a driver fix or a way to change the fanspeed?
    Thanks

There is a 3rd party fan utility but I can't find link and it is "use at your own" - heat is a big gottcha with Windows on Mac and why I only surf the net and do other light tasks now and use a PC. There was a program but it no longer supports Windows on Macs from 2011 +
Apple has never done anything and as long as fans are SMC controlled won't, some have said they can change fans while in OS X and that a restart carries those settings over but I doubt that is a real solution even if it does.
5 yrs ago I hoped SpeedFan 4.x+ would be able to have a motherboard profile added for Macs.

  • Extremely hot Macbook Pro

    Hi everyone.
Should I worry if my computer gets hot like this?
    HD: 95°
    CPU: 187°
    Enclosure Base: 88°
    Enclosure Base 2: 88°
    Enclosure Base 3: 83°
    Heatsink B: 146°
    Northbridge: 128°
This seems extremely hot especialy for the CPU. I'm encoding a TimeLapse and my fan is only running art 3280 rpm.
Also, the ambient temperature is around 57 where I am sitting right now.
    Thanks for the help.

At those temps, the fan (only one in the 13 inch model) should be running fairly loudly. You can use SMC fan control or similar software to boost the fan speed if you like. If the processor gets dangerously hot, it will suddenly and spontaneously shut off.
For better cooling, keep the screen angle at 90 degrees or less so as not to block the air exit in any way. You can improve cooling by placing your MacBook Pro on a "cooling pad", or encouraging convection by allowing AT LEAST 3/4 inch (20mm) clear air space underneath it.

  • Its been like a week that i bought new iphone 5s but whenever i play games or talk in skype for an hour my iphone get extremly hot... idk why?

its been like a week that i bought new iphone 5s but whenever i play games or talk in skype for an hour my iphone get extremly hot... idk why?

Why? Because it is working the processors hard. Same as when you work or exercise, your body gets hot, so does the iPhone when it is working. Skype and many games will tax the processors more so than browsing the internet, sending texts or email. So, it gets hot. If it doesn't cool off fairly quickly after you quit Skype or playing your game, or it gets hot when doing less taxing activities, then you might want to have it checked out.

Never use those things. The only thing you will accomplish by forcing the exhaust fan to operate at a higher speed than required will be to draw in more environmental contaminants than it would otherwise. Interfering with the Mac's cooling system could conceivably invalidate its warranty.
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. The power adapter indicator light may cycle off / on once.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Macbook pro is running extremely hot

when running graphics intensive programs (normally Second Life) my macbook pro gets extremely hot and will top 200 F.  at high temps performance begins to sufffer.  i use smcFanControl to help cool it and to track the temp.  i retruned it to apple once through Best Buy where i purchased it.  it had a nonfunctional key and at the time i had them check for the high temperatures.  it came back with a new motherboard but the high temps persisted.  this process takes 3 weeks.
are there any suggestions on how to keep it cool.  fans haven't worked for me.

You might try a cooling pad. The Mac will run hotter using graphics intensive programs, and would probably benefit from one of these. Best Buy should have a selection of these to choose from. I don't use one myself, so I don't have any specific suggestions. A Google search might be worth doing, as there are sometimes reviews.
I assume that the Mac is being used in a way that it is well-ventilated and not on a pillow or anything like that which would impede its ability to cool itself. Air needs to be able to circulate freely around it since it also uses its metal skin to radiate away the heat.
    Good luck!

  • 990XA-GD55 990X Chipset Heatsink EXTREMELY hot.

My PC has started giving BSOD's, and when touching the heatsinks to see if anything is overheating, the 990X heatsink (the one Below the CPU) feels EXTREMELY hot, warm enough to burn a finger if held there for over a second. (65/70C ++ )
CPU is at 45C, Mainboard itself at 32C, Graphics card at 36C (Whilst playing games)
I wish I had a IR thermometer I could read the temperature with.
Is it normal for them to go super duper hot? Could this be as a result of a BIOS setting regarding C1E or Phase control?
The side of the case is open, and the PSU is sucking hot air out of the case causing circulation.
    Nothing is overclocked.
    AMD FX-4100
    MSI 990XA-GD55
    MSI 460GTX Cyclone
    Corsair Vengeance 1866mhz DDR3 (2x4GB)
    Corsair Force3 SSD
    Corsair TX650 PSU
    Creative X-Fi Platinum PCI-E
    Seagate 7200RPM SATA II (2X1TB)

I like my computer to be silent, which it is.
All the other components are fine.
If there really is an issue with inadequate airflow (which I find hard to believe) why didn't MSI fit a fan ontop of the heatsink themselves?
CPU cooler is the OEM one from AMD.
No Intake fans, No exhaust fan. (System temperature is fine)
The PSU sucks up all the warm air from the system and spits it out, which draws in fresh air into the case.
I know this setup (With this fan arrangement) is fine, I have ran it for many years without any issues.
Only part that seems to give an issue now is the 990X chipset heatsink. And only during heavy gaming for a prolonged time.
On idle I estimate it to be around 50-55C
Idle system temp is 29C. With the CPU at 40C.
The four cores (According to CPUID Hardware monitor) are at around 15C each.
SSD disk is sitting at 30C.
    GPU at 33C.
Can anyone else with this board see if theirs is the same? I rather suspect that MSI made a mistake by not fitting a cooler on it from stock.
Its also in a rather bizarre location, sandwiched right between the CPU and GFX card, with the RAM on one side and the huge heatsink to the left of the CPU on the other side.

  • Graphics Processor Die Temperature

    Hello,
I'm sure a lot of people are asking themselve the same question, so:
does anybody know the maximum operating temperature for the graphics processor Die (GPD) in the 1,33 PB??
'Cause while playing at Neverwinter Nights, the GPD rises up to 85 celsius, and it's kind of worrying. I contacted the company that released the game on mac and they responded the easy way: ask APPLE, we don't have any control on your hardware.
I have Hardware Monitor installed and they say that the maximum temperature is 103 celsius, but does anyone have a similar problem?
anyone heard of a place in the APPLE website for that kind of info?
    Thanks for your help

PowerBooks are hot little beasts, mine is the same way. I don't know the maximum operating temperature, but to be safe I think that you should try to lift the back end up with something so that air can flow underneath. This really helps when I play Halo or just do things in general. That is pretty hot, but I think it is normal enough. If that game was a 2D side scroller then it would be too hot.

  • Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro power brick extremely hot to the touch!  This affected my computer (It was hot as well) - I could smell something burning!  I am unsure the issue!

    Hello,
I purchase the latest 2013 Retina Macbook Pro, which I pluged in my charger and walked away from my computer!  When I arrived, my computer was in sleep mode and I noticed a faint burning smell and felt my computer and it was extremely HOT!  I then felt the power brick and it was even hotter!  10 minutes after I awoke the computer (ESTIMATED), the computer actually cooled down...  It's not hot to the touch but still warm!  On the other hand, the power brick is still extremely HOT!
Please help!  I started the charge at 3% and awoke it around 78% and now it's at 89%
Also, how long does it take to charge from 3% to 100%?  It's been about 2 hours to reach 89%
    Thanks,
    Anthony
NOTE:  Any support would be great!  I could use the advice as this is personally my first MAC!  I am thinking a software update to fix the computer from heating up when sleeping but I am unsure about the power brick!

    AppleSupportNow
I always thought that keeping it plugged in nearly 24/7 can damage the battery too?
No, not at all, the only damage from being plugged in all the time are IF:
A: its not turned off and in sleep mode ALL the time while plugged in
B: you dont unplug it ever couple weeks or so and drain the battery down to about 30 to 40%
*Also, if youre going to store your macbook away for a few weeks or more,... make sure it has at least a 50% or so charge.
*Cycle count / use/ lifespan is one thing that cant be countered.
Proper treatment is another thing. Just because LiPo batteries dont need conditioning in general,.. does NOT mean they dont have an ideal use / recharge environment. Anything can be abused even if it doesnt need conditioning.
Just use and enjoy your new macbook,
    From Apple on batteries:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
but really all you would keep in mind is --"consider 15-20% is the same as 0% and recharge it"
Important useful info on your Lithium cells as compiled from battery experts:
Heat increases battery performance but shortens life by a factor of two for every 10°C increase above 25–30°C (18°F above 77–86°F). This is yet another important reason for the cooling of any notebook, not just keeping the processor and GPU cool. Mavericks lower power tasking (app nap) and combined with the cool running Haswell processor both greatly protect battery life on your Macbook now more than ever before.
Good news: *Mavericks not only increases a single charge cycle for longer battery use off a full charge,… but also prolongs the overall long term life of the LiPo battery in a Macbook by reducing the load conditions the battery experiences from heavy peak-use.
Counting cycles is not conclusive because a discharge may vary in depth and there are no clearly defined standards of what constitutes a charge cycle on a Lithium Ion battery empirically. Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count.
The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine.
Frequent HIGH depth of discharge rates (draining the battery very low) on a Lithium battery will hasten the lowering of maximum battery capacity.
Although better performing when warm, lithium polymer batteries live longer when kept cool.
Lithium cells prefer draining conditions at a steady pace rather than fast pulsed or quick discharges, …this fact is idealized now with the Haswell and Mavericks app-nap low power tasking for battery use.
