Extremely long iphone backup...

Yo.
Since I upgraded my iphone to 3.0...every time I try to sync to my computer the back up takes ages...in fact since I upgraded I haven't actually completed a back up since it gets stuck half way and doesn't move for half an hour.
I've had a decent browse of the google and these forums and found a lot of people have had this problem (but not as bad as I have) and no solution has been found yet. I deleted all my old back-ups and reset my sync history but that hasn't done anything.
I have two questions:
1. Any ideas on how to solve the problem?
2. If I disable the back-ups...will it still sync my contacts over and restore them if I need them?
Thank you.

I'm in a boat just like yours. I downloaded & upgraded to OS 3.0 the day it was released. It took forever (hours, not one hour, more like 3) that day. Since then, the back ups have been seriously, unreasonably slow. Today, as I write this, we're going on hour #4 (I kid you not). This same problem happened a few iTunes or OS upgrades ago (I have had an iPhone since December 2007, and have the same one I had then). That time, there were lots of bugs and other folks shared horror stories of waiting for hours, being on support calls for hours, etc. I waited it out, but it took several weeks before a fix came along and the back ups returned to normal.
Any ideas aside from "be patient" and "watch a movie"?

Not endorsing it (yet). I'm going to try it out in a little bit. Looks like it's a GUI for a few simple terminal commands.
In any case, I hope it helps someone (or everyone):

  • How do I delete my old iPhone backup since I can not back up my new phone.  Will I lose any pictures?  Can you ever see what is actually on the cloud? Last, how do I delete the old iPhone back up.  Thanks, been trying to do this for a long time.

I want to delete my old iPhone backup since I can not back up my new phone.  Will I lose any pictures?  Can you ever see what is actually on the cloud? Last, how do I delete the old iPhone back up.  Thanks, been trying to do this for a long time.

Deleting the backup only permanently deletes the backup from iCloud.  It doesn't do anything to the data currently in your account or on your devices.  To delete it, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of the device that you want to delete the backup for, then tap Delete Backup.
You can't see anything in an iCloud backup, if that's want you're asking.  You can only restore it to your device.  You can, of course, see your other iCloud data.

You don't have iCloud set up?   There would be a backup there if you enabled it.

How long should it take to restore new 4s iPhone backup from iCloud?

That depends mostly on your Internet connection download speed, and how much data you have on the phone. It could take anything from a few minutes to several days. There is no "one size fits all" answer.

  • By backing up the iTunes Library via saving the iTunes folder on an external drive, is it also backing up all iPad and iPhone backups as well as App Data and Documents from your devices?

If I backup my iTunes Library by saving the iTunes folder on an external hard drive using the instructions contained in the link below, will it also back up all my iPad and iPhone backups as well as App Data and Documents from my devices? In other words, will it also create backups for the backups? Thank you.
Back up your iTunes library by copying it to an external drive
Furthermore, when it is time to restore the iTunes folder I copied to my external drive to a new iTunes program on my new computer, how will it merge the information once I plug in my iPad or iPhone to that new laptop to sync? If I did the iTunes library backup a couple months ago and I've added documents/music/pictures on my devices since then, what will happen when I try to sync it with the new laptop now working off of the iTunes library backup from a couple months ago since the information is no longer the same? Which information will dominate and thus be kept? Will it delete the new information/data/pictures/documents/music off of the devices since it is not on the iTunes program when it syncs?
Sorry for so many questions, but they are all related to backing up and restoring iTunes. I am not very tech savvy if you cannot tell

It would be a good idea to look into a bigger hard drive. They are not that expensive any more and can save a lot of headach. This is even more important if you are buying music from the iTunes music store. If you lost those files they are gone.
The point of having it on your PC and iPod is to have a backup. If the iPod fails, or you need to go back to the DVDs and find they are scratched, or just can not be read you have lost days of work converting and organizing all of those songs.
Or the iPod could hard drive could fail and then you will have to try to bring all of those files back from DVDs. You end up with a mess since some songs will probably be on multiple DVDs, have different names ect. Trying to reorganize it all can be a pain.

So just to be clear, when you say "just bought" how long ago was that? Is it on this new iPhone that you had pictures, texts, etc that you want? Were you backing up to iCloud or onto iTunes?
This may not help for everything but if you go to iCloud.com and log in, are you able to find your pictures there?

  • My iPhone Backup from iTunes is very very very slow.

I have seen other people in here complaining that their iphone backups are slow but mine is really really really slow. I lifted my iphone connected to backup last night and in the morning it was still halfway done. When I come to work I connect it to my work computer and by end of the day it is only a quoter done. I don't have a backup and I am not sure what I can do to get this thing to backup.

I'm experiencing the same problem. My iPhone have been backing up less than 1GB (744 MB to be exact) of data for over 12 hours and only less than 2/3 was completed. I then received a telephone call (that I missed) and it started ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!
I have 2 systems Vista and Leopard 10.5.4 and same things happens on both system.
This is extremely annoying, I've been trying to backup for the past week and just haven't been able to succeed.
I was told the latest firmware would resolve this problem. So I upgraded to 2.0.1 and I'm still having the same problem.
    Help,

  • Iphone backup on iOS X Lion

Hi, I upgraded my iOS 10.6 (Leopard) to iOS X 10.7 (Lion) recently and now I no longer can find my iPhone backup file that used to be in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup.  The Library folder seems to have just disappeared.
Does anyone know where iOS X Lion keeps or moved the backup files to?
    Many thanks

    same here!
very unpredictable behavior from polygonal lasso tool with apple magic mouse and fresh wacom intuos 5 large.
work on imac 27" i5 late 2013 with 32GB RAM and mac pro 2006 with 16GB RAM
    - can observe unsteady and unpredictable behavior of the polygonal lasso tool
in 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9 meaning it wont react on my click and "hang"
or suddenly fill the lasso selection as complete, when i just do a simple click.
    - can reproduce this behavior with my apple magic mouse over usb, wireless and
more frequently with my wacom intuos 4 and 5 over usb.
    - even on my latest imac 2013, newly installed only photoshop cs5 and cs6, i can reproduce much more strange behavior fo this tool ever: the first point/click won't register at all, it feels like the polygonal lasso tool hangs and waits and nothing happens. i click on another tool, click back on poly.lasso and try again. after the second attempt, after seconds of waiting, the third click always fills the selection as completed, although i am not finished with my selection at all
    any idea why?
love working with polygonal lasso, although it reacts very unstable and unpredictable since years and versions !!

  • Iphone backup via time machine

Hi all, im going to be setting up a new mac and i want to just transfer my latest iphone backup but when go into time machine and in the backup folder i see a load of back ups but no date etc. just a long line of numbers for each folder. is there a way i can tell what my last backup is for my iphone, ipod and ipad ?
    THanks

Why not just use migration assistant to bring over your full user account, which includes your iTunes library and iDevice backups?
The backups aren't going to be very useful without being associated with your iTunes account anyway, since iTunes is going to try to erase your phone whenever you attempt to do a first sync anyway.

  • IPhone backup doesn't work (backup can't be saved...) - nothing works!

First of all, I've read all instructions here and on Apple site, here, and it still doesn't work. It is this error: "Backup could not be saved on the computer" http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2529?viewlocale=en_EN - this of course didn't help, so I looked here.
    I found this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10567963
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10223044 - this especially:
I found my log file, I erased all my backup copies, then I created new directory with name from log file and I copied mdinfo and mddata with correct names from log. But it still didn't work, all it helped, that log showed error with another file. I tried it two more times (also it is very long process - beetween 1 and 2 hours), and it had problem different files every time. For example:
    2009-11-29 14:41:26.641|AppleMobileBackup.exe|4164:18439528|/SourceCache/SyncApplication/S yncApplication-599.1/Backup/IPodBackupTool.m:_handleReceivedNewBackupFile| ERROR: Could not save file piece for file C:\Documents and Settings\MK\Dane aplikacji\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\d4b40b9e4a4799fb864f974 d36ff987c6f4c484f\723ca7ed73d89a9464360cc94964cbed 84de4724.mddata: Could not open the file at "C:\Documents and Settings\MK\Dane aplikacji\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\d4b40b9e4a4799fb864f974 d36ff987c6f4c484f\723ca7ed73d89a9464360cc94964cbed 84de4724.mddata" for writing, lastError 82
Interesting thing is that, when fail backup ends, it creates new directory, which doesn't allow to copy any files to it. Only deleting it and creating folder with same name helps to copy mddata and mdinfo files.
Then i found this - http://www.guruguidedvds.com/iphoneblog/common-problems/iphone-backup-problem-ch ecklist/ - so i changed name of directory drom Backup to Backup-old, iTunes created new Backup directory, but problem remained the same "backup can't be saved on this computer".
No firewall, only Windows XP default thing, Avira AntiVir Free Version, and about 2,5GB free disk space od C:. Last working backup copy I have is from month ago.
Now I have iTunes 9.0.2.25 and 3.1.2 firmware, and there is problem. Problably my last good backup was with 3.0 firmware and older iTunes, but I'm not 100% shure.
Somebody has some other ideas how to solve this?
    Message was edited by: loop_digga

Ok, I tried everything, last thing I did was downgrading and reinstaling iTunes, also without any good results, so unfortunately I had to do Restore. To be completly shure that previous backup was reason of errors, I set device as new, and now it is ok

  • IPhone Backup Experiences

I'm curious to hear from others how long their iPhone backups take when syncing to iTunes. I have an 8g original iPhone which is only half full. I have downloaded 27 apps. Sometimes my backup takes less than 5 minutes and the longest time has been 45 minutes!!! There has been no consistency. Just wondering why it would take 45 minutes to back up about 4 gigs.

There was an article on this at MacWorld ("Two steps forward and one big step backing up"). Seems that you're not alone.
There are 4 phones in my family. All experience widely variable backup times. It seems dependent on App usage, but not 100% on that.
At the moment, I'm about 1 hr into my sync's backup, with 60% complete. I have 38 apps installed, with 2GB free on 8GB iPhone. Even with most disabled, backup still could take an inordinate length of time.
The only "work around" I've found (and mentioned in article), is to click the "x" to stop the backup. The sync will then complete normally. I would only recommend it if you've both: A- had a recent completed backup, and B- have a copy of the backup folder saved elsewhere, in case you run into the "corrupt backup" problem on recovery. Which brings up another issue: this folder appears to be excluded from Time Machine, so I'm manually making copies for now (it's in ~/Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync).
Hopefully this will be addressed soon.

  • Transferring iPhone backup from PC to Mac - will this work?

    Hi,
I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and am almost done with transferring everything from my PC to my Mac after a long full day and a half of backing up, reformatting external hard drives etc.
I have read to transfer an iPhone backup from PC to Mac you need to do the following:
If you are a Windows user, open the Start menu, click on "Computer" and then navigate to the "C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" directory.
    And then:
Click on the "Finder" icon and navigate to the "Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup" folder on the Mac.
I did the first step just fine, but when I tried to find the folder on the Mac by both manual navigation and then a spotlight search, it wasn't found, so I went into the Library/Application Support and then created a new folder with the name MobileSync and a subfolder 'Backup' within that. Will this work?
If not, could someone please help me on how to get my iPhone backup onto the Mac.
    Thankyou!

  • Any Possible Way to Recover pictures from an Iphone backup?

I recently had my Iphone replaced because of technical difficulties and for the life of me could not remember my restrictions pass code, so I had to restore the whole phone and set up as a new phone and lost everything, me being a genius thought to save everything but my pictures that I had on it. Anyway, long story short I accidentally replaced the old backup with the pictures with the sync of new set up, and I really need those pictures that I had in my camera roll.
_It doesn't have to be easy_, but I KNOW the backup is still there.
*MAIN Q: Is there any way to recover specific files from the back up of my Iphone?*
