Extremely long Master File Sharing/Export times (MP4)

I, too, it seems, am having extremely long Sharing times with my FCP X project(s). It's a one hour, 50 minute HD video. Nothing fancy, just a couple talking heads comprised of 7 .mov files and appx. 65 graphics and black generators as B-Roll. When I share it to a Master File as an MP4 video it takes nearly 36 hours to complete.
The Transcoding takes more than 8 hours before it gets to the export phase. I have "Create Optimized Media" and "Create Proxy Media"checked in the FCP X Prefs and have Background Rendering switched off, FWIW.
I have a 13" MacBook Pro (mid 2012) 8GB RAM, 1TB HD and running 10.9.2. I don't know if it makes a difference but I have Perian and Flip4Mac installed.
Activity Monitor shows that I'm using 6.34GB physical memory and 10.5GB Virtual Memory. The Memory Pressure graph is green. Activity Monitor shows these processes: a kernel task of 750MB, FCP using 600MB and ProTranscoder Tool using 286MB.
I've shared copies of this same video to YouTube and it took about just as long but it shared successfully.
I was just wondering if there was any way to cut down on the rendering time - which, based on what I've seen in the discussions may not really be possible on a 2-hour video. I will have another video in a week or so to finish and it's the same length. Also, I may have a couple more projects in the future (if the client likes these) that will be similar. My goal is to not have to wait days for a project export/share to be complete. Worse, as was the case today, I decided to add one more 5-second graphic and had to re-do the entire Transcode/Export process.
I looked into getting Compressor but that doesn't seem really necessary or beneficial in my case and, based on the reviews, can actually add even MORE time to the process, it seems.
Thanks for any suggestions or pointers. I'll continue to look through the discussions for info.

Since I just downloaded the trial version and started this project I'm still learning as I go. At this point, I may actually end up having to purchase FCP (which I actually REALLY like - except for the hideous export times). I used the OLD Final Cut Pro a good many years ago on a G-4 Quicksilver so this is somewhat of a re-learning experience.
When I began the project I'm trying to finish (now that I recall) I actually exported it from iMovie to FCP. That's when I needed help using the generators because I needed to cover the 16:9 video while using a 4:3 graphic. I began using this current version of FCP without initially setting or changing any preferences. So, I believe the Optimize was already toggled. I wasn't sure abut the proxy but you cleared that up for me. Thanks! I just made sure those two were toggled for this latest share/export because of something I read about maximizing (which I'm doing a lot of these days!).
The second program's .mov files I shot and began editing were imported directly into FCP and, again, I don't recall that I toggled the Optimize option. I know I was sure to copy both programs' files to their project and not keep them in place (avoiding potential file issues). I also exported that second, similar, video at one point (probably because of the issues with the first program) and it, too, took a comparable amount of time to export. It is an hour and fifteen munutes long.
Since my MBP is new, I got the (what I assumed to be)was the maximum RAM. I've since learned you can (expensively) actually upgrade it to 16GB. I'll opt for a SSD first, tho ;-)
When I get a chance after I'm finished with this current export ( which occur tomorrow sometime :-/ ) I'll try the Pro Res export and then try the MPEG Streamclip (which I have and use frequently) option.
I'm using a new Toshiba Canvio 3.0 Plus external 1.5TB (non-Thunderbolt) drive formatted Extended/Journaled/GUID partition to store my project and actually did quit FCP and restarted the MBP prior to beginning this export with no browsers running.
And, fwiw, at 6:30pm EST the project is 44% of the way through the Transcoding process.

Good evening. When I try to rename a master file or export a master file, it only allows 9 spaces for my new name, even though Aperature 3 allows many more spaces than that for version names. This creates a lot of problems and headaches for me.

When I try to rename a master file or export a master file, Aperature 3 only recognizes the first 9 spaces for raw .NEF files, even though it easily uses twice that many spaces for version names. I have a system in place that works really well for me, wherein by changing the file name I can recognize what's important to me just by glancing at the file name, no matter what system it is in, I do not have to open or mouse over anything to know what the file is. My files also arrange themselves in order no matter what file system they are in. Can someone please tell me if there is a setting, or something I am doing wrong, that prevents me from using a longer Master file name. I can't be the only person who would like to have his Master File names correspond to the name that appears in the Aperature library, and would like to use at least 16 spaces (numbers, letters, etc.)

Hi Frank,
As you suggested, I am attaching several screen shots. In the first one you can see how I set up my preset. I used "Custom Name" and "Counter" with a dot between the two drag ins, followed by "D90". I also have a dot to seperate the 8 digits in the Custom Name and make it easier to read.
I then click "OK" which takes us to the second screen shot. Here you can see that in the Example File Name everything looks perfect, and you can see I have clicked on "Apply to Master Files".
In the third screen shot you can see that the version in my library did in fact change correctly. With the "mouse over" pop up screen you can see, however, that the Master File name was changed to "1933.1017.NEF". It failed to carry the "12D90" and if I go to where my masters are stored that is exactly what the name was changed to.
In the fourth screen shot I attempt to export the master. You can see how my "Version Name" is set up.
And finally on the 5th screen shot you see in the File Name Example the name "1933.1017.NEF" once again, which when I export the master is exactly how the name will appear. Since I will export more than one file at a time , a (1) and a (2) etc., will appear at the end of the names because all the files are being given the same "1933.1017.NEF" name.
I hope this reply does a better job of clarifying my problem. I am anxious to see if this is something I simply misunderstood, or if I am simply doing something wrong.

ITunes File Sharing and Time Machine

Does Time Machine backup the documents in the iTunes File Sharing pane on an iPad? If I deleted an app or file by mistake (or if my iPad crashed), would I be able to recover the file shared documents through Time Machine backups?

Anything actually stored in iTunes, docs, apps, ect, should be backed up. If you are bacing up the iPad to iTunes, those back ups files would be in Time Capsule (although I confess, I've never had to extract one).
As for apps themselves, they can always be redownloaded (both on the iPad and in iTunes on the PC).

Extremely long(10 minute) Full GC times

I have a problem that seems unrelated to traditional GC tuning. Full Garbage Collection on my server (x86, Linux, 2 proc, 2GB memory, 1GB Heap) is taking in excess of 10 minutes. The frequency of the Full GC is about every 8-10 hours. I've combed some posts for issues related to long GC, but long is a relative term, and usually refers to 2-10 second range.
My question is, what kinds of things could cause such an extremely long GC. My theory is that this particular machine is hosting some other applications, most notably a mysql server that is connected to remotely. With this setup, another application could be using resources on this primary server while the Full GC is executing, thus causing a thrashing scenario from a CPU perspective. But even so, it seems that this wouldn't cause Full GC to take 2 orders of magnitude longer.
I've currently changed to the CMS garbage collector, so the long pauses are not a problem, but I'd really like to understand why such a long Full GC pause is even possible, and what can be done about it using the serial Collector

Possibly the objects that are being garbage collected, are having their finalize() method called. It's not normally guaranteed that the GC will call an objects finalize() method....but you never know.
In that case, the finalize() method(s) maybe be timing out, eg. trying to close database or network connections, and taking 60 seconds or more to time out individually.
It's just a wild guess...

Now when i go to share an edit in FCPX it works for a while then i get an error message that FCPX has paussed and is out of memory ,
I have 8 g ram and loads of drive space,
the video is only 4m 30 sec

hello again, i tryed repair again and i think i have fixed it , also i reduced the file size from HD to 1024x720 and it seams to be working good , i also exported to one of my external drives, but i think it might have been a problem with the main drive, so the repair seems to have sorted it out , thank you all for your help

1kb file while exporting to .mp4

Hi. I try to export a videofile to a .mp4. I've tried to export both from Premiere and through Media Encoder. Two days ago the same file from the same projekt worked just fine to export. Now I only get a 1 kb file and I've tried to delete all render files, create a copy of the project, tried different settings, restarted my computer - but nothing seem to work. It do export and the file looks good just until the last second when the video and audio is created to one file. I use a legal full version of CS6 on PC with Windows 7.

I wasn't thinking about the Apple Devices so much as the Master File set to Audio & Video which produces a .mov file.
I have normally used the Master File to export my videos but will experiment in future with "Computer".
I've taken a closer look with VideoSpec and notice that the data rate of the .mov file is about 70% of the .mp4 and the file size is correspondingly smaller.
The export/render time of the .mov is also somewhat quicker.

Missing master files in Aperture

I am missing master files from Aperture 3. I rebuilt the library with no success.
Oddly, I can't even find them in Time Machine even though I know I exported versions of them. The entire month of imports doesn't ever appear in Time Machine even though I have proof that I used the master files to export in July. I haven't used Time Machine a lot so maybe I'm missing something.
What else can I try.

Have you checked, if the missing masters are inside the Aperture Library package?
Sometimes Aperture looses the connection to managed masters.
You need to find out the exact date that you imported your images - you can find that information in the "Import Session" metadata tag - ad this tag to one of the metadata preset that you use to display the metadata in the info panel - set themetadata preset in the info panel to "edit".
Then open the Aperture Library package (ctrl-click the Aperture Library in the Finder window) and select "Show package Contents". Inside the window that opens go to the "Masters" folder, then inside to the year , month, day you imported the images. Are the original master image files still there?
If yes, then make a backup copy of these images, to have a copy just in case, and try to repair the permissions in your library with the library first aid tools:

If you cannot reconnect the missing originals/masters this way, reimport the masters you found inside the library.
Please post back, once you looked inside the library, if the masters/originals are still there.

Must File Sharing Always Be Off To Let HAL Sleep?

Hi All!
I just found out after a family networking experiment that our eMac and iBook won't go to sleep by themselves anymore so long as File Sharing is on. Is this supposed to be this way and can this be fixed? Both machines are running 10.4.10.

Just asking, are others connected when this is attempted?

Is it possible to connect 2 iBooks via Airport Extreme for simultaneous file sharing - not necessarily the same file.

Thanks. I am listed as an administrator on both machines. I can lock and unlock. I can check the box for personal file sharing. I can then lock it all.
For some unknown reason it seems to take a while for personal file sharing to start up. When and if it does it will turn itself off if one subsequently tries to connect the 2 machines. Strange.
I know this is a strange situation.

Extremely long time when executing an export transaction data package link

Hi,
I am working in a packagelink to export transaction data to the application server. The package which I am currently using is /CPMB/EXPORT_TD_TO_APPL. I use it to generate an output file which I later use in a different appliation to register modifications applied in BPC.
It has been working correctly without problems for a time. The problem is that suddenly it stopped working. Maybe because of some changes in the dimension library (is it feasible?) . I defined and scheduled again the packagelink and it began working correctly again, but the time it takes to execute the process is really long. Approximately it takes above 10 hours, which is an extremely long time for the process. In the beginning, the packagelink was executed in an hour and a half. Could anybody tell me any idea about what can be the reason of this problem?
Any help will b much appreciated.

looks like you are hitting a BAD index.
Check the [DB50|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/9c/ca5bb3d729034aaf6f4cea2627c2f2/frameset.htm] or the DBMGUI - there should be warnings about this.
To fix this issue, either use the DBMGUI -> Recover -> [Indexes|http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_6/30/5ada38596211d4aa83006094b92fad/frameset.htm] function or logon to dbmcli, get an SQL session ([sql_connect|http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_6/11/8af4411cf5c417e10000000a155106/content.htm]) and use the [sql_recreateindex|http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_6/30/f7c7f25be311d4aa1500a0c9430730/content.htm] command.

Extremely long export time

Hi,
I got some big problems while exporting footage from AME and PP CC 2014. I mean – the time of exporting is extremely long. It take 4 hours to export 15 minutes of 1080p footage (with not best quality of render settings). There is no big difference in time while exporting with or without effect same as AME or PP.
I shoot my footage on SONY A7S in XAVC S and my export settings are H.264, VBR 1, 16/20.
My PC spec:
Intel Core i7 3770K 3.5 3.9 GHZ
32 GB DRR3,
HDD 2TB, SSD 128GB
GeForce GTX 770 2GB
WINDOWS 7 ULTIMATE 64 BIT
I will appreciate any help cos this problem make me sick already

I checked the log file and there are no errors in the file.
There are no ORA- xxxx error messages.
The last line in the log file is as follows:
"Processing object type schema_export/table/index/domain_index/index "
I just checked the export job run this morning and it is still on the same
index object "A685_IX1" . This is a spatial index. It has been sitting at
this same object according to the job status for at least 24 hours.

Why has exporting a film from Final Cut Express (FCE) HD (3.5) taking 30 times longer and file size increased by 30X?

Exporting a 75 minute film from Final Cut Express (FCE) HD(3.5) through Quick Time Movie is now taking over an hour instead of the 2minutes it used to take. The FCEMovie file is now 14 GB instead of the 1 GB it used to be. In both cases Self Contained was notchecked when exporting. I havetried trashing the Preference file to no avail. There was a message when opening the FCE project that 140render files were offline. Ichecked the box to forget them and also did a Render All Both and Render Only Mixdownbefore exporting. I had thisproblem a few days ago and solved it by reinstalling FCE. However after two days the problem hascome back. As far as I know I didnot change anything in FCE or the system when the export times and file sizeincreased.

I think you are correct about the longer version being a self-contained movie except that I did not check that option when exporting. However, I have opened another project of the same size and that one can be exported in the usual time, the problem must reside with the particular project. A clue is that to regain some disk space I deleted the render folder for several projects including the one I am having trouble with. Also when iI opened that project I got a message that files were disconnected and I think they were render files. I did re-render before exporting and that is when the file length increased by a factor of 13, even though it was not supposed to be self-contained. FCE is working OK with other projects when I export them. I am still puzzled.

Exporting taking extremely long time

I have been working with FCPX for about a year and all of the sudden, my files are taking forever to export. I'm exporting the ProRes timeline files by using the Share option. I always export the file with current settings to the desktop. Once it's finished on the desktop, I convert the file to H.264 using a Compressor droplet. I've read that this process is supposed to be faster then exporting H.264 directly from FCP. The files I'm using are about 1-2 hours of 1080i ProRes. For the file I'm exporting now, the estimated export size is 140 GB and in 24 hours of export time it has exported 45% of the file.
I know these are big files, but it never used to take this long to export them. What can I do to speed up this process?

Suggestions:
Check the amount of free space on your boot drive and media drives. If they have less than 20%, do some archiving. If there is plenty of free space, check the drive speeds by downloading on of the speed apps from AJA or Blackmagic. Also Verify disks and repair permissions in Disk Utility.
While exporting, open Activity Monitor to make sure that you don't have a memory leak. Check free memory and Page Outs.

Extremely Long Export Times

Having some issues with export times in FCP. We don't do alot of editing in my office and we've just upgraded to HD for some of our stuff and the export times when trying to make .movs is taking forever.
Our original footage is recorded as .WMV 1280 x 720. We have Flip4Mac, but were having issues with render times and export times when trying to export as .wmv(One 15 minute video took over 4 hours to export and then at 90% complete Flip4Mac crashed FCP) so I converted the files to .mov using Ultra MP4 Video Converter. This helped with the rendering, but our export times are still ridiculous...even for HD...I would think. Like I said we haven't worked much with editing especially with HD footage.
Anyway, I had 7 sequences totaling around an hour and a half of footage and did a Batch Export to make them Quicktime Movies. It's been over 14 hours of Export Time and I'm still only at 52% complete.
Am I doing something wrong...is there anything I can do at any step along the way to make both my rendering and exporting times shorter?

Perhaps now would be a good time to explain your workflow.
This is how I deal with non-native source material ....
• move original material to hard drive on computer. Put in scratch folder.
• open up Compressor and import all files to be converted.
• select preset that will convert to ProResLT at an editing framerate, video size and audio sampling rate/depth.
• launch batch. Note: if you have a multi core Mac, using quick clusters in QMaster will speed this process markedly.
• once process is complete, import ProResLT files into FCP and edit. Once finished, export using "current settings" & "self-contained".
• open up Compressor again and import the exported ProResLT files.
• select the preset for the delivery format (h.264 or whatever) and launch the batch.
you are done.
