Extremely long print delay - Mac

I am experiencing very long print delays or, in one case so far, an error message.
I downloaded Adobe Reader for Macintosh 11.0.02.  I have a Mac Mini with OS X 10.8.2.  The Mac Mini has USB 3.0.  My printer is a Brother MFC-8440 local printer, USB 2.0.  The printer driver has been updated and is current.  The Mac and Brother printer are connected via USB.
I am able to print the PDF files as images but not as documents.  Most of the PDF files I have tried to print as documents have done so but they take FOREVER to print.  For example, a 28 page PDF file might take the better part of an hour to print (that may be an exaggeration but not by much).
But on one PDF file that I tried to print I got some weird error message on the document that printed.  It says,
ERROR NAME;
         ioerror
COMMAND;
        flushfile
OPERAND STACK;
        --filetype--
        --arraytype--
Strangely enough, I can see the document on-screen just fine.  But the only thing that printed on the sheet was that error message.
I am able to print documents from other applications such as Word without any issue.  So this seems to be isolated to printing PDF's.
I previously used Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro for Windows on my old PC (XP Pro, SP3, same printer) until I recently switched to the Mac.  I never had any issues with printing PDF's in a fairly quick manner with the PC.
I am only using Adobe Reader now.
My guess is that with the Mac there is probably some sort of bug in the processing software with the Brother printer.  The Brother printer has an LED that flashes as the data is being downloaded.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Does this mean the "data" goes from MBP wirelessly to AE then "upstream" to the Modem/router then back to AE then USB to printer?
No, the data should travel from the MBP wirelessly to the AEBS, and then, to the printer via the USB port on the AEBS. If; however, a network client is wired to the D-Link, then data would travel from the client to the D-Link, and then, by wire to the AEBS before it goes out the USB link to the printer.

  • InDesign CS3/Snow Leopard long print delay. Solved yet?

I have Adobe CS3 Design Premium running on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (on a Mac Mini dual core Intel w/ plenty of RAM) and while using In Design I am experiencing delays of 38-45 seconds when I use the print command (w/ spinning beach ball), even with simple 1-page test docs. I notice earlier threads on this topic, with some describing crashes (not an issue for me). Others say it's an issue for Adobe and or Apple, and the printer mfrs. (I use an HP 1300 laser).  I can live with it (because ID is a wonderful app for book layouts)  but it is vexing. Has anyone come up with a solution or a workaround yet?  Any advice much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    John Grissimn

Bingo! You absolutely described my problem.  Indeed, the long delay was only when printing from an ID file the first time each day. Thereafter the delay was minimal.  As important, the link you kindly provided gave me the precise fix. ID was taking a long time to load a huge number of Printer Device Drivers, close to a thousand, before the print command dialog box showed up. Clearly the system was needlessly bloated.
Per the link's instructions, I went to the Printer Device Drivers in my Mac Mini's library and deleted all but the PPDs I needed. After restarting my Mac and re-launching ID, the print command produced the print dialog box immediately. Hooray! Problem solved and question answered.
FWIW, although recent and current CS iterations may not have this problem, it appears this issue has been around awhile with several earlier versions of ID and PS and various Mac OS versions. I'm sure your posting will be a great help to those experiencing the same problem with earlier iterations.
I am hugely grateful. Many thanks!

  • Can no longer print to shared printer on mac running 10.5

We have an old G5 that we use to share a printer between various macs all running 10.9. I recently upgraded the G5 to 10.5 to see if that helped with some  issues we had, but now that we can no longer print to the printer.
What I have done so far:
#1 Updated the printer drivers on both 10.5 & 10.9 macs.
#2 Reset printing System on both 10.5 & 10.9 macs.
#3 Readded the printer to the 10.5 Sys Pref > Print & Fax using actual driver
#4 Readded the printer to the 10.9 Sys Pref > Print & Fax
If I do the last step by using "Add printer or scanner" option...
...but use the Generic Postscript Driver I get: Looking for Printer > Connected to Printer > then the error "Stopped on server [G5's name] - No pages Found!". The job does appear on the G5 in the printer queue.
...but use the actual driver I get: Looking for Printer > Connected to Printer > then the error "Stopped on server [G5's name] - Unable to write uncompressed document data: Operati...". The job does appear on the G5 in the printer queue.
If I do the last step by selecting the printer under "Nearby Printers" I get "Unable to download the software from the server at his time".

There are some differences in sharing but it will work. I have a G4 that I use as a server, too.
First, tell me what printer model. There are driver differences, too.
At the heart, CUPS (the print control subsystem) uses IPP as the print sharing protocol. That part hasn't changed. So I recommend, for troubleshooting, setting up the printer on the client using IP printer > IPP protocol.
    Here's a guide:
    1) On the 10.5 print server, use a browser and point it at the CUPS admin web page athttp://localhost:631
Go to Printers list and find the queue name from the left side of the page next to the printer you want. Also note the IP address of the server Mac.
    2) On a client, Add the printer as an IP printer > IPP protocol, and enter the IP address and queue name you noted above.
    3) Select the generic postscript driver (on client Mac)
(after reading your second post, I want to remind you to set the server to use the correct driver.)
    Finish and try it.

  • Can no longer print to Canon printer connected to Airport Extreme

My Canon MP830 is connected to my Airport Extreme. Bonjour on my Windows 7 Acer laptop sees and installs the printer. I have been printing to the MP830 successfully from wired and wireless computers on my network this way for around a year. Today, I can no longer print to the MP830 unless I connect it directly to a USB port on my Acer. Bonjour can still see and install the MP830 when it's connected to the Airport Extreme, but I can't print to the MP830.
    Any ideas?

Sounds a bit like a problem being discussed in this thread:

I suspect some kind of update is at fault. Like you, my printer/base station setup had been working fine until recently.

  • Can't print from Mac to Windows printer

I have a wireless network of 3 computers and a printer. One is a desktop running XP with the printer attached. The other is a laptop with XP. And the last is a MacBook with 10.4.11.
I can print from both computers running XP but I can't print from the Mac. The Mac sees the printer and I can add it and try to print from it. When I try to print I get the error message:
    NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY
I later get the "Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds" message too.

Be sure the printer name assigned in Windows is not more than 11 alphanumeric characters. Long names with punctuation and the like are known to cause problems.

    Tutorial: Resolving common printer problems
Mac OS X offers a robust printing system with built-in support for hundreds of devices from a wide body of manufacturers. It's not without flaws, however, and printers often become unrecognized or non-functional after a significant Mac OS X update. Printers connected through hubs or AirPort base stations can also exhibit some frustrating issues.
Below is a run-down of the most generally successful printer workarounds. Keep trying until one of them sticks.
Use Printer Setup Repair This tool lets you verify properties of the root user, the Printing Services (lp) user, and Print Operators (lp) groups, reset the printing system, perform CUPS maintenance and more. Run through its set of maintenance tasks before delving into further printer troubleshooting. See how to use it in this article.
Re-install CUPS If you are experiencing printer issues after applying an incremental Mac OS X update, problems may have occurred with your CUPS installation during the update process.
The file is available from this Web site: http://www.cups.org/software.php, and is labeled cups-1.2.1.dmg
Delete then re-add printers/Reset printing system Open Printer Setup Utility, located in Applications/Utilities and look at the "Printer List" Highlight and delete all entries.
Alternatively, go to the "Printer Setup Utility" menu at the top of the screen and select "Reset Printing System".
Click the "Add" button and re-add your printer(s).
Gutenprint and usbtb Some users have been able to resolve printer communication issues by installing the excellent open-source Epson printer drivers available as part of the Gutenprint package (formerly known as Gimp-print) and usbtb, a CUPS back-end for USB printing.
Remove non-required drivers Removing extraneous drivers from /Library/Printers(name of manufacturer) can sometimes resolve printer issues. Remove files that are for other models than your own.
Re-install drivers Re-installation of printer drivers from original media or from a Web download (either directly through the manufacturers site or via a search by model/manufacturer on VersionTracker) can resolve some printer issues.
Try disconnecting from network In some cases, LAN-connected printer, seemingly broken by the Mac OS X update can restored to normal operation by simply disconnecting the device from the network then re-connecting it.
"Communicator Error" -- try power cycling If you receive a "Communication Error" message when attempting to print after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5, the first workaround you should try is power cycling the printer, as well as disconnecting then re-connecting it to the Mac.
Connecting directly to the Mac If you are having printer problems and are using an external USB hub, try connecting the printer directly to your Mac.
One reader who had success with this method writes:
"Unfortunately the update to Mac OS X 10.4.6 has eliminated the ability to use my Lexmark Z600 series USB printer on my iMac G5 20" iSight (rev C).
"I resolved the problem via the following: I unplugged my external USB hub and plugged the printer directly to my computer."
Disconnect from AirPort and reset For those who are using printers connected to an AirPort Express, Extreme or another wireless device with USB connections, you might want to try the following:
Disconnect the printer from the AirPort unit (or other router)
    Wait a few minutes
    Plug it back in
    Restart the base station unit
Check for your printer to appear in AirPort Admin Utility (located in Applications/Utilities)
Print one copy In some cases, using print one copy instead of the standard print command can result in elimination of crashes that occur during printing.
Try IP printing instead of AppleTalk Some Macs are unable to see AppleTalk printers that are located on the local AirPort (or other wireless) network. Several users have been able to workaround this issue by using IP printing instead of AppleTalk.
Last resort -- Archive and Install As a last resort, try performing the somewhat tedious Archive and Install process, then re-upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4.7. This has solved some otherwise inexplicable printer issues for MacFixIt readers.

  • Can no longer print after MacOS 10.6.8 upgrade

I used to have full Reader functionality on my core duo 2006 era MAcbook. Since I upgraded to OS 10.6.8 I can no longer print. I get a print error that says "No pages selected to print" even though I clearly selected the whole document.
Nor do on line pdf forms on websites seem to recognize it when I fill them in. I tried version 9.5, 10.x and 11.02. The latter 11.02 will not run at all on my computer even though it installs OK.

  • Can no longer print playlists

Suddenly, I can no longer print playlists for CD jewelcase inserts. I've been printing these with no problem for months and yesterday for the first time, when I select 'print' from the file menuj I get a message saying, " printing of jobs for this printer is stopped."
The printer is also connected to a PC and prints files sent from the PC just fine.
Can someone tell me how to fix this problem?
    Thanks
    Greg

I had a similar problem a few months ago.
I can't remember the cause however.
Running the latest OS 10.3.9 Combo-update (I was using OS 10.3.9 at that time) and uninstalling the printer and re-installing it eventually solved it.
Because I did two things at the same time (bad habit), I can't tell you what fixed it.
You might read Troubleshooting printing issues in Mac OS X.
If you have 1 printer I would try resetting the printing system: Mac OS X 10.4: About the Reset Printing System feature
This will remove all installed printers.
    Then add your printer again.
You are also using the printer for a PC. Is the printer switched or shared?. If shared, you must solve the problem on the computer to which the printer is connected.
If you still can't solve the problem, I suggest you post a question in the Printing & Faxing forum in the Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger category.
There are knowledgeable people posting there, who know way more about printing problems than I do.

  • I can no longer print using wifi. I have to connect a USB cable to print. Setup and pref show that I should be able to print wireless but I keep getting printer not found msg when trying.

I can no longer print via wifi. I could at one time but now I have to connect to printer with USB. All settings appear correct in printer and macbook. Sys pref shows printer with green light next to idle. Sending a print prompt results in "searching for printer, printer not found, ensure printer is turned on". I have reinstalled printer in my print list and reinstalled printer software on macbook. Kodak 5250 AiO printer shows it's configured for and on wifi channel. I go online with laptop using wireless but cannot print. Help!

If you know the IP address of the printer, then you can check if there is a working path between the Mac and printer. This can be done using Network Utility or a web browser.
If you open Network Utility and select the Ping tab, you can enter the IP address of the Kodak and then press the Ping button. If there is a working connection then you should get a reply to each packet sent.
With the web browser, many devices have a built-in web server so you can type the IP address of the printer into the browser and if there is a working connection then you will open the printers web page.
So, are you able to confirm you have a working connection between the Mac and printer?

  • I have a macbook pro and aphotosmartD110 wireless printer.  I was told that if I install the printer software on my computer, it will no longer print wirelessly.  Is that true and how do I scan wirelessly without loading in the software?

I have a macbook pro and a photosmart D110 printer.  I was told that if I load the software for the printer onto my mac that it will no longer print wierlessly.  Is that true and how can I scan wirelessly without loading the software? Also, can I just connect my mac to the printer with a cable and scan or do I need that software loaded onto the mac?  Thanks for all help!

If you are running Lion then all drivers are distributed through Software Update. You do not need to install anything, other than to install the printer in System Preferences > Print & Scan. If you already added the printer while it was connected using USB, you might want to delete it and set it up again wirelessly to avoid confusion. Or, give them two distinct names e.g. "Photosmart D110 (USB)" and "Photosmart D110 (wireless)".
All scanning functions are now performed using Preview, but you can also access the scanner through the same Print & Scan preference pane, or with Image Capture.
This HP document may help explain how driver software is distributed now:
