Extremely poor connection speed plus the line keep...

Hi
I moved into a new build flat in Jan 2013, and had an outsourced engineer activating my phone line early Feb. When I first signed up to the service, the estimated connection speed was advertised to be 3-7 Mbps.
It's been about 12 months since the line was activated, and I've been suffering from 2 main problems which were never resolved:
1) Line dropping - the middle "Broadband" light of my BT homehub turns from blue to flashing yellow once every few hours every day. On a very bad day, it happens every 20-30 mins. I need to work from home sometimes and to connect to my company's VPN. The frequent disconnection of broadband has caused a huge amount of trouble in the last 12 months!
2) Very slow broadband speed - the estimated connection speed has always been advertised to be 3-7 Mbps. In fact, in the first 2-3 months after the line was activated, the average speed was 3-4 Mbps, but since last April the speed has remained around 1-1.5 Mbps, or 2 Mbps on a good day.
The speed seems to fluctuate a lot as well - I can tell from loading a YouTube video. Basically at all times it is impossible to load a 720p video properly. Turned it down to lower bit rates, it loads for a few seconds then stops loading at all. About a few seconds later, it continues to load again... so on and so forth.
I used to be able to use LoveFilm/BBC iPlayer streamed to my TV in the first couple of months, but now there is no chance of doing it at all.
With the combination of the 2 issues, I have complained to BT so many times but every time I was told that my connection speed was good, even though it is far less than the speed range I was advised when I first signed up. It has been extremely frustrating that it's almost the end of my contract but I still cannot get a stable broadband connection nor a reasonable speed that will load a YouTube video smoothly!
Below is the stats I've got from a speed test and from the HomeHub. Tonight seems to be a less busy night, so I will post the stats from another time when the issues are really bad.
The problem has been bothering me since I moved into this flat and I'm getting really desperate so any help is much appreciated!
Many thanks,
Will

if you cannot access the master socket and hence the test socket you cannot eliminate line noise caused by the internal wiring and if engineer finds internal wiring the problem then you will get charged £130 for call out
removing the bellwire is easy but really need to be the master as well - still all extensions will be a start  bellwire removal

  • Very slow connection speed, after phone line probl...

My catalogue of problems starts about a month ago. The phone line developed heavy interference and my Broadband connection kept dropping. This was diagnosed as being a fault with my HH 1.5. BT duly sent me a replacement HH3 which arrived about 3 days later. I installed the new hub, changed all the wiring and the filters for the new kit that came with the hub only to discover that the interference on the phone line was now even worse. It was so bad that at times you could not even hear what was being said on the other end of the phone, so an engineer visit was arranged.
A week later a BT engineer came and checked the line, sure enough there was a second problem and all the wiring from my house to the nearest telephone pole had to be replaced.
These problems had had a catastrophic effect on my connection speed and profile (I was getting about 500 kbps both up and down stream), so I dutifully reset the hub after the engineer had finished and waited for the line to stabilise.
14 days later and the upload speed had doubled, but the download speed is still unchanged at 570 kbps, about half the current upload speed. The line was a bit temperamental for the first few days but I have been able to maintain a solid connection for the last 4 days, current stats are as follows:

There is only one active socket in the house, and the hub has been running from the test socket for the last week.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The Hub is connected to the test socket. Disconnecting the ADSL feed to the hub has had no real effect (The upload speed increased marginaly but still no change to the download speed). Reran speedtest too, the new stats are:

  • Has anybody solved the slow wireless connections speeds of the new Imacs

I have just purchased the new imac...and was made aware of the disastrous connections speeds using wireless.. Does anybody know if apple have come up with a solution...or are they just not dealing with the problem?

I am a brand new Mac user with a new 24 inch iMac purchase. Macs are supposed to be hassle free right? Right. No question I was about ready to throw it out the window because the wireless connection to the expensive AP base station was, oh, 100x slower than my Dell laptop side by side about 1 foot away. Nothing changed even if I connected directly to the AP using an ethernet cable. My connection consists of an Actiontec DSL gateway connected directly to my AP extreme that allows wireless to my PC laptop as well as my new iMac. Hours and hours go by until I find this help link on Mac Orchard Forums:

+WOW!! everyone else with this problem read this! i was having these same huge speed problems using the internet with my new 24" dual core intel imac with 2 gigs of ram and found a posting on another site's thread that fixed it completely.+
+"Try setting your DNS servers to OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) and see if that helps at all. Maybe the ISP's changes increased the load on their DNS servers."+
+my guess is that somehow these DNS servers work the way tiger likes them to while others dont, i have no clue other than to say it works!!+
+heres a site i found that helped me understand how to change the settings:+
    +http://portforward.com/networking/static-Mac10.4.htm "+
With the new Leopard installed I went to the "portforward" link first and followed the instructions exactly to set a static IP address, then I reset my DNS servers with the exact numbers you see above - IT WORKED IMMEDIATELY!!!!! I didn't have to call my ISP or anything, it just worked exactly as it should with both Safari and Firefox. Now this Mac is flying and I will not be tossing it back to Jobs.
    Good Luck!

  • How do I monitor connection speeds on the E4200?

All my previous routers have allowed me to monitor my connection speeds however I can't find this in this router.  I found the client table under "status" but I have not been able to find the connection speeds anywhere.  I like to make sure that my devices are running at close to 300Mbps and not 54Mbps in case I have a connection setup wrong.  I have searched in the forums without much luck.  Thanks.

Tomato or DD-WRT opensource firmware would allow this...keep in mind that the E4200V2 will NEVER be supported by any opensource non-OEM firmware!

    Diane,
I have added very few apps to my G5. The majority of my time is spent editing photos with PhotoshopCS3. I have software updates set to run weekly and have always kept them up to date. I really believe it's a disk permissions issue...but repairing them doesn't help.
*+Upon installation, I used Archive and Install.+* While I agree that Erase and Install may sound like a good idea, it makes me nervous. I do have everything backed up on a bootable CMS drive, but I'm a photographer and was hoping to not have to erase the G5.
Yes, as I mentioned in the original post, I've downloaded and installed the Airport firmware update. And all software is up to date.
All was working just dandy before the upgrade. Unfortunately now it's sounding like I may have to erase my hard drive and install fresh.
If I do that, is it just a matter then of dragging my photos from the backup disk to the G5? And documents? Etc?? The thought of getting all my photos and important information back on the G5 seems a bit staggering.

  • Poor connection speed and intermittent drops with WRT160Nv2

In January 2009 I purchased a Linksys WRT160N v2.  At the time I did not have any wireless devices to connect to it other than a Nintendo Wii which has no problems.  In July I purchased a Dell Laptop with an Intel 5100 AGN wireless card and have since had trouble getting consistent speed on my wireless connection.
Around the first of November I upgraded the firmware on my router to v2.0.03 and installed the latest Intel 5100 driver available from Dell.
On November 3rd I participated in a web chat session with Linksys Support and was able to increase my connection speed to 121Mbps.  This was short-lived however.
On November 24th I sent an email similar to this post to both Linksys Support and Intel support and have not received a response back from either as of yet.
On 12/5/2009, after reading similar posts in the support forums, I followed some tips suggested by forum users:
    1) I hard reset the router by holding the reset button in for between 30 and 60 seconds.
    2) I hard power cycled the router by unplugging it for bewteen 30 and 60 seconds.
    3) I selected manual wireless configuration and assigned a unique SSID.
    4) I selected WPA2-Personal security and assigned a 9-character password.
    5) I set Radio Band Frequency to "Standard 20 MHz" and the channel to 11.
    6) Beacon Interval to 50
    7) Frag and RTS Thresholds to 2304.
    8) MTU to 1350.
    9) Power cycled the router and restored a few settings that were lost.
    10) Connected the laptop on wireless.
The laptop was in the same room as the router, about 10 feet away unobstructed.  There was full signal strength, but the connection speed would fluctuate between 43Mbps and 72Mbps.  There are no other devices besides the laptop connected on the wireless, and only 2 desktops on wired connections.
Detectable by my laptop are only 5 other WPA2 networks, 3 WEP, and 2 unsecured.  None of them are close enough to have signal strength of more than 3 bars.
We are giving our son a netbook for Christmas and I hope to have resolved all of these issues before then.
What other settings changes can be made to increase my connection speed over 100Mbps and stop the intermittent signal drops??

  • Yoga 13 Extremely Poor Wifi Speeds

I currently have the most recent driver installed(1.04.0213) and all other current W8 updates are installed, but I am still experiencing poor WiFi performance. I have also changed the wireless adapter setting power saving mode to Maximum Performance for both the "On battery" and "Plugged in" options in Windows 8's advanced power options menu.
I also have the following options set on the advanced tab for the Realtek WLAN card:
    Antenna Diversity Type: 1
    Bandwidth: 20_40Mhz
    Selective Suspend: Disabled
    Selective Suspend Timeout: 60
    WiFi Config: Performance
After the most recent driver update, my connectivity issues were resolved, but my speed issues were not. My current set up is as follows:
    PC: Lenovo Yoga 13 w/Realtek RTL8732A Wireless LAN 802.11n
Router: RT-N56U IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n,  IEEE 802.3/3u/3ab (Firmware is up to date)
I rarely am able to exceed 10 Mbps and am lucky to average between 1-2 Mbps. I currently pay for Frontier Fios Internet rated at 35 Mbps down and 15 Mbps up. Websites take a ridiculous amount of time to load and YouTube videos can't be played without constant buffering.
Every other device that I have connected to my router, whether they are hard wired or wireless, is able to maintain 30-35 Mbps, even at peak usage times. I currently have a MacBook Pro, an iPad 3, HTC One(M7), Iphone 5, Asus Essentio, and an Asus X54C laptop that are all operating as expected on my network.
I know similar threads exist on the message boards for the Yoga 13, but none of the "Solutions" address this issue. Please address this issue and post a solution that is a permanent fix for this laptop! It has the potential to be an amazing device, but the WiFi issues are keeping it from reaching its true potential!

Why is the internet so slow. It will take over 1 minute just to load google!
I have 500mb internet each month on t-mobile and have only used 18mb this month so I have plenty left!!
How can I make it faster or fix it?!?

The internet speed is determined by your carriers network.  If you think it's too slow, contact your carrier.

  • Poor Download speeds in the evening, What can be d...

    Hi All,
This question has probably been answered a million times so my apologys if it has. I tried downloading something last night and my download speeds were absolutely **bleep**, something like 4.3kbs a second!!!!!!
Now am I right in thinking that this is BT's stupid throttling occuring to me. In the day I get awesome speeds and have no issues at all.
On Sky BB I never had any issues at anytime and got around 6.5mb download speeds and my sync speed was 7.5mb. I ran a speed test last night and was getting the speed quoted what I pay for!? Can someone help me with this!?
    Thanks
    Steve

I take it your talking about P2P/torrents, heavily traffic managed by BT.

  • Confused connection speeds.

Hi BT Community, been browsing through here for a while now and I can't believe how many people have problems with this ISP, and the same sort of problems also.
    Here is mine.
Got my broadband installed in my new house last October (2010) and I was brilliant, was told to expect 8mb connection which I was getting, very very happy. Along came Christmas time and my homehub started giving me headaches, it would randomly restart itself, there was no obviously pattern, it could restart once a week or once and hour. So after enduring this for 2 months as I am quite a patient person I decided to contact BT about it. I got a lovely woman on the other line and we discussed problems (I am very tech savvy and have worked with networks and computers for a very long time) that we both suggested it could be. After some troubleshooting at my end and a lot of testing and diagnostics at hers, we decided to leave it a week and see how things go.
A week past and I was still having the same problem, homehub restarting sometimes 8 times in a row. Got on the phone again and arranged for an engineer to come out and check things out. He got his ancient laptop out of his bag and hooked it deirectly to my phone socket and done test (everything 100%) next he done the same test while connected through my homehub (again 100% fine) which didn't restart once while he way there conveniently. He was getting a constant 6000 kbps connection and streamed HD video on his laptop from the BBC iPlayer, which he was shocked that my connection could handle that. Anyway, I told him that I was unhappy with keeping the current homehub as I knew the moment he drove off it would restart. So he replaced it with one he brung in with him and then done the same tests on it as he did with the old one. Everything was grand and we had a friendly chat about when Infinity was getting put in my area etc etc, real nice guy.
So 2 months on and I can honestly say that My new homehub has never restarted on me once, Yay result????
Nope, ever since this visit by the engineer I have been getting extremely bad connection speeds during the day, am talking around 500 kbps, but in the early hours of the morning I get my full speed of up to 9000 kbps. To me this sounded like a fair usage policy thing where I have over spent on my bandwith and BT had chopped my speed or something like that. So I get on the phone and to my dislike I get a call centre in India, I sit and listen to the guy read from his script for a while, then I cut him off as politely as I can and tell him how it is, that I have done these procedure checks that he keeps asking over and over again, and that I know that the problem isn't as easy as plugging my filter directly into the test socket, or changing my filter etc... After me telling him everything that I have done, and he is finished doing the usual line checks and telling me that I am getting 8000 kbps sent to my homehub, we both come to the conclusion that it must be either my computer or my homehub that is at fault. I tell him that I will try a different adsl router and a different computer.
So I have went through 3 BT homehubs (borrowed a couple from friends) and I have tried 2 other Desktop computers and 3 laptops (laptops connected by ethernet and not wireless) and I am now running the broadband through a d-link adsl router with the same result.
I am confused as what this problem can be. During the day I get such a slow connection that I cannot stream a 360p youtube video without constant buffering, but yet if I am using the connection at 4am I am getting my proper service.
Find below my information (it's from the current d-link router I am using)

  • Speed on the Airport Extreme

Hi I have a Macbook running Leopard. Everything runs well. Ever since I bought the Airport extreme WIFI N router my connection speed to the connected external hard drive is rather slow.....
    Here is what i do....
I have a 250gig Mybook connected to the Airport extreme. On the airport utility settings, if I set it to only N wifi the speed is very slow. So i have to keep it on the multiple settings (b/g/n). According to my Macbook, when I have the multiple settings the speed is 130 mbs but if it's on only n then it's 300mbs.
So my question is, why is the connection faster when it's on multiple settings then when it's on just N?
is there a fix for this?

Leopard Ron, Welcome to the discussion area!
According to my Macbook, when I have the multiple settings the speed is 130 mbs but if it's on only n then it's 300mbs.
So my question is, why is the connection faster when it's on multiple settings then when it's on just N?
I'm confused by your question. Your first statement says that it is faster (300 Mbps) in 802.11n only. Your question seems to indicate the opposite.

  • Adaptor to connect balanced microphones in the line input of sound c

)Many times we need the use of a professional microphone. But in which input of our sound card? Because the balanced signal produced, we need an adapter to connect it in the line input. In my site there is a proposed construction and complete instructions, plans and

    Dear Jutapa.
While i am occupied with electronics for more from thirty years, my experience in the web pages has age of fifteen days. Thus your comments about the appearance of my site are precious and be compelled to you. Thanks, but i do not understand what means ?IMO?. Also, what means that my site is very hard? Please inform me to correct it. Now the answers in your questions:
) Perhaps you decei'ved from the size of transformer because it is only 50VA (or 50W / 30V = ,66A) and his cost in Greece does not exceed the 8?. Keep in mind always that, the toroidal transformers cost at 70 percent least from the E-shaped transformers. But in any case the total cost of the unit does not exceed the 45?. Surely this cost approaches the cost of the available mini mixing desks in the market. But the sound quality of the unit is comparable only with the high quality professional mixing desks, because the structure of circuit is precisely same with a channel such desk, a thing that appears and only from the supply of +/-8Volts. The phantom power of 8Volts maximum is enough for all modern condenser microphones. There are in the market such type units from famous brands as dbx, bss, apex, rane, symetrix, dda etc. and their price exceeds the 300? as these units are addressed for use in studios.
    2) The oscilloscope graphs quoted in the article, believe me it is the better method of estimate the unit ? especially the square wave response ? because they express her transient character as this is most important for a designer of electronic circuits while the usual graphs of THD+Noise are offered more for consumers. If study my article, you see somewhere my explanation about this. Anyway, the T. I.M. factor of a closed loop circuit (Transient Intermodulation Distortion) expresses the possibility of it to manage the harder signals ? this is the response ?speed? to fast transients ? without oscillations. In the software of my oscilloscope included and a FFT analyzer to give the THD but i do not use it because by default today yet the chipper units in the market has very low THD due to the evolved modern electronic parts. The same is also in effect for the noise produced by the circuit himself. As it is known, the fundamental Johnson noise or thermal noise from metal film resistors is too little and the NE5532 ? NE5534 produce noise of certain nanovolts.
    3) About the EIN (Ein) - or the sensitivity of input so that us understand also the other ? reported in the schematic diagram in dBV. Why not in dBm? Because from habit i do not want to take into account the input impedance ? as get used almost all the designers of electronic circuits ? and in this way the logarithmic expression of the minimum gain of input it is given by the use of dBV (reference ratio to Vrms). Let to calculate the input sensitivity in dBm as you prefer: The input impedance of the balanced input is: Zin = R2+R3 = 20 K? approximately. The total gain of input presented at the output of the subtructer U2A and is: V = V3-V2. The minimum gain of the first stage composed by the two non inverting UA and UB with VR5 turned full CCW is: Av = +[2X(R4+R3)/VR5+R5] = +[2X000/47220] = +0,466 = ,466. In dBm the reference is 0,775Vrms thus Av = ,466X0,775 = ,36Vrms. And because the output of U2A is twice his inputs then: V = 2X,36 = 2,272 Vrms and the sensitivity in dBm is: Ein = 20 X log(2,272 / 0,775) = 9,34 dBm. And if we take the maximum gain of the first stage - by turning VR5 full CW - of 0 with the same equations in dBm, results: 46 dBm
    Best regards

  • AirPort Extreme 802.11n - disappointing connection speeds in Windows

I have just set up a brand new AirPort Extreme and, with my MacBook Pro running OS X10.6.5 I am getting excellent reception and a full 300 Mbits/s connection speed throughout the house. When I boot the MBP into Windows 7, though the reception is still very good, I only get 130 Mbits/s maximum speed. Is there any good reason why performance is so much poorer in 7 than in OS X using the same hardware? All drivers are up to date as far as I can tell.

It seems my initial 300 Mbits/s connection speed was just a short lived phenomenon and now my connection seems to have settled at 130 Mbits/s for both OS X and 7. I also logged my iMac on to the wireless network (though it is usually hard wired) and that initially declared a speed 270 Mbits/s, then briefly 300, but quickly reduced to 130 Mbits/s despite being right next to the AirPort unit. Is there anything I can do to try to restore the higher speeds?

  • My friends iPhone 6 Plus has lines going through the screen. Does anyone else have this problem?

Help? There are white lines going through the right side of screen. I reset the phone and restored it, I don't think its software.

is it still a hardware issue ?
I am seeing from last 2-3 days or i realized in last 2-3 days but am keeping seeing every 1-2 hrs apart the lines keep coming and phone also acting especially in the areas of touch response.  I am on latest 8.1.3 version .
At least i know that i am not alone.
