Extremely slow and high latency all day.

DSL is running extremely slow during peak hours from 12 afternoon to 12 midnight.   Lower than 50% of rated speed and high latency
I have been frustrated with this DSL Service for months now.  I am considering contacting BBB to file a complaint and I am tired of dealing with customer service giving me the run around.  Internet is a monopoly in my area therefore verizon feels it doesn't have to do anything to keep its customers when they provide crappy service.  I am on waitlist for another internet service provider and it is going to take almost a year because of how bad the internet options are in the area and demand for better options.    I even had to pay over 100 dollars to get a truck roll come to my house to fix any issues within the house and the internet has not gotten better.  Atleast I feel I should get a refund or something.
Here is my speedtest result just now.  http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2899553407
It has been even slower at other times. http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2893509440
Modem is Westell 6100 or something.

Here is what ICSI Netalyzer Results have stated.
Network Access Link Properties + –
Network performance (?): Latency: 580 ms, Loss: 15.5% –
The round-trip time (RTT) between your computer and our server is 580 ms, which is somewhat high. This may be due to a variety of factors, including distance between your computer and our server, a slow network link, or other network traffic.
We recorded a packet loss of 16%. This loss is very significant and will lead to serious performance problems. It could be due either to very high load on our servers due to a large number of visitors, or problems in your network. Of the packet loss, at least 14.0% of the packets appear to have been lost on the path from your computer to our servers.
TCP connection setup latency (?): 720ms –
The time it takes for your computer to set up a TCP connection with our server is 720 ms, which is quite high. This may be due to a variety of factors, including a significant distance between your computer and our server, a particularly slow or poor network link, or problems in your network.
Background measurement of network health (?): 3 transient outages, longest: 0.8 seconds –
During most of Netalyzr's execution, the client continuously measures the state of the network in the background, looking for short outages. During testing, the client observed 3 such outages. The longest outage lasted for 0.8 seconds. This suggests a general problem with the network where connectivity is intermittent. This loss might also cause some of Netalyzr's other tests to produce incorrect results.
Network bandwidth (?): Upload 700 Kbit/s, Download 2.3 Mbit/s +
Network buffer measurements (?): Uplink 5400 ms, Downlink 1200 ms –
We estimate your uplink as having 5400 ms of buffering. This is quite high, and you may experience substantial disruption to your network performance when performing interactive tasks such as web-surfing while simultaneously conducting large uploads. With such a buffer, real-time applications such as games or audio chat can work quite poorly when conducting large uploads at the same time.
We estimate your downlink as having 1200 ms of buffering. This is quite high, and you may experience substantial disruption to your network performance when performing interactive tasks such as web-surfing while simultaneously conducting large downloads. With such a buffer, real-time applications such as games or audio chat can work quite poorly when conducting large downloads at the same time.

Your ISP's DNS server returns IP addresses even for domain names which should not resolve. Instead of an error, the DNS server returns an address of 199.101.28.20, which resolves to search.dnsassist.verizon.net. You can inspect the resulting HTML content here.
There are several possible explanations for this behavior. The most likely cause is that the ISP is attempting to profit from customer's typos by presenting advertisements in response to bad requests, but it could also be due to an error or misconfiguration in the DNS server.
The big problem with this behavior is that it can potentially break any network application which relies on DNS properly returning an error when a name does not exist.
The following lists your DNS server's behavior in more detail.
Please help.  I am so frustrated I literally have fights with my family over internet problems.  I am right now looking for other options and even starting to think about paying over 100 a month for dedicated line or T1 if they can service my area.

Not a single response from Verizon on this? And after you posted the tests & information they will need? I think I may have to make a service choice soon. Its bad enough Verizon can't post a simple email address for our support, they have removed Usenet access, removed access to our websites (I use HTML so their sitebuilder is useless)... Sheeshe...

    Hello ,
I am not very good with tech things , I have a Mac Book Pro and have had it for almost two years with no problems. Now for the past week or so it has started running extremely slow and freezing up all the time. I am not really sure what is going on but is there any advice on something to do or any idea what could be wrong.

My MacBook Pro is running very slow.

2 days ago my FF3.6.3 started becoming extremely slow/delayed on EVERYTHING/ALL ACTIONS (I have been using 3.6.3 for a few months with NO problems, until 2 days ago). Scrolling going in delayed/slow/jerky 'waves' motion (not smooth & fast), Right-click box very delayed/hangs in coming up, Text typing lagging/intermittent, activity extremely slow/delayed when pointing mouse over anything, changing from tab to tap extremely slow. Bascially EVERYTHING has become sooo slow, delayed, lagging etc. I have tried ALL possible checks (extensions, add-ons, plug-ins, download history, cache, cookies) & viewed nearly ALL the FF help sites. Is this a sudden/recent bug?? It doesnt only happen with Facebook, but EVERY window I open!!
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == approx. 2 days ago

I've personally not seen this behaviour since Firefox version 2. It however re-appeared for me in 3.6.6 and 3.6.7 (current) and it's bloody awful. Makes everything I do take 50% longer ..... great for efficiency in the modern world.
This 3.6 branch is so riddle with flaws which seem never to be fixed. Each fix / update brings with it more problems ... worst of all I see version 4 is already in development but they cannot even get 3.6 right ??? WTF ????
Mozilla must stop chasing version numbers as has become the trend in the software world. Fix an existing version to perfection then start working on a new branch of the product.

  • All design programs running extremely slow and takes forever to save and sometimes shuts down randomly?

Ok so  I'm a design student at a community college (about to graduate soon and will be continuing on getting my BFA) I have all of the creative cloud suite. I have Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, etc. Recently I started having problems with all of the programs. Whenever I work in the programs they would run extremely slow. Recently, I tried to save a .eps file that was only about 1.2 GB and it took me an hour to save, and this was when I was working off of my computer desktop. When I place the .eps file in Indesign, everything would go blank and it would freeze up. Also I had an error sign popping up from InDesign saying "out of memory". Im not sure if that is related to my computer's hard drive or indesign itself. I just started using creative suite so the creative suite is pretty new to me. Sometimes in Indesign when I do the Command+w to preview the whole project, it would be completely black and showing nothing and I would hit escape and the whole software screws up. Then I would do a force quit on the software and then Indesign would say there was a serious error and must shut down. That error message has been popping up several times now. I also talked to Apple support and they suggested me doing a Repair disk utility (which I am currently doing right now) and also recommended me contacting Adobe since they know their software. I checked software to see if there is any updates that is needed but everything is up to date. I'm not quite sure why its acting like this so I'm reaching out both to Apple and Adobe to see if both can help me solve the problem. If anybody had experienced this problem before and could help me troubleshoot this issue that would be great.

I installed the creative suite about a year ago, and this just started happening last weekend. I didn't think it would be a problem and that it would last for a day since I was working on InDesign all day and Illustrator and it usually goes away after I finish using the programs. But this has been occurring for about a week now and has not gone away. and yes the other programs are running slow. I was trying to resize some images for a client and Photoshop was acting extremely slow  when I was trying to resize the image and also place an image into a 8x10 document in Photoshop. I'm not sure how to find my system specifications.
All design programs running extremely slow and takes forever to save and sometimes shuts down randomly?

  • IMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB, Extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since migration from Mountain Lion to Mavericks

    Dear Apple Support Community.
As mentioned by a number of users reporting the same problem, my 2009 iMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, has become extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since it was migrated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks (OS 10.9 then OS 10.9.1).
I have already run CleanMyMac, deleted 5GB of useless stuffs, which did not translate into any improvement. Following the advices collected in other Apple Support Community threads, I have applied EtreCheck the outcome of which is provided below.
For information, I have also upgraded my 2011 MacBook CPU2.3 GHz Core i7, 8GB which became only a bit slower than before, sometimes freezing which it almost never did before. However, I am used to the fact that Mac get usually slower and more prompt fo freeze after upgrading to a more recent OS.
Both my 2009 iMac and my 2011 MacBook have F-Secure installed. So the problem with the 2009 IMac is unlikly to be due to the presence of F-Secure. Interestingly, the few abnormalities found by Etrecheck were exacly identical before I ran CleanMyMac. There are two more findings (mentioned below) since I ran CleanMyMac on the 2009 iMac, which again didn't improve the problem.
So please find below the details of the EtreCheck experience and some additional measurements made with iStat while running EtreCheck:

The iMac can work slowly with only one software e.g. either Mail or Safari or Firefox, but still the below "out of Memory" message occurs about every 3 minutes.
Aperture has becomre to slow to be useable
If trying to write a mail (with Mail) while Safari or Firefox is open, then the "out of Memory" message occurs about every 20 seconds so I need to check on "Resume" several times per minute.
    Conclusions
From the above, unless anyone in the Apple Support Community proves to be able to identify a specific problem leading to a way to find a cure, I tend to conclude that Mavericks is not suitable for computers operating with a Core 2 Duo CPU even with a 8GB of RAM.
Unless I missed something, I did not see any warning from Apple Computer Inc. informing their customers they should refrain from upgrading Core 2 Duo Computers.
The only solution I see so far is to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion. And the Apple Support Community would confirm that it is the only solution, I would appreciate to get your guidance on how to proceed.
    Intended action plan
Migrate the above 2009 iMac to a 2014 Mac Mini Server operating on Mavericks to ensure that no data may be lost while downgrading to Montain Lion.
Provided the above downgrading operation is successful, assign this 2009 iMac to partial retirement e.g. Mail, Skype, iTunes  and DVD player.
In advance, I would like to thank the Apple Community for helping me either i) finding a cure to the problem, ii) or confirming that Mavericks cannot operate properly on Core 2 Duo computers, iii) and in such a case, guiding me on how to downgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Yours sincerely

... what anti-virus would you recommend using?
Use what is already included with OS X. It already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Adobe premiere cs6 suddenly EXTREMELY slow and CPU intensive

    Hi everyone,
I'm editing candon 5d mk III footage (h.264 files) on my late 2011 MacBook pro. Here are the specs..
240 gig SanDisk SSD harddrive (190 gigs free)
    500 Gig (250 gigs free)
    8 gigs ram
    2.4 ghz i5 processor
Intel HD graphics 3000 graphics card
I'm a wedding videographer and I am currently closing my last edits of the season. I have edited 20+ 45 minute videos on Adobe Premiere CS6 and have had absolutely no issues at all. I enjoy working on premiere so much that I've been trying to get my videographer friends to give a shot and simplify their workflows.
Upon starting my second to last edit (same process as the other 18 videos I've done this season, organizing the footage within it's respective folder, loading it into premiere with the couples' choice in music and opening 4-5 new sequences based on the events of the day) I noticed that I was having a lot of trouble importing folders into my media bin. I had to import all of the footage unorganized because loading the folders "Preperation, Ceremony, Photos, Reception" with the footage within them would cause premiere to freeze and become unrepsonsive. So, finding no solution I added all the footage in no particular fashion. Just one large unorganized group. Then, while organizing the files into bins, I noticed even the smallest move would take several minutes to complete. Because I was working directly off of my hard drive I figured these kinds of delays would eventually catch up to me, so I moved all of my files to my HDD and decided to work on them there. The project itself continued to be extremely slow and started crashing regularly (especially when applying audio effects). After a few hours, I stopped being able to play 1080p video at all. It would jam and stutter so often it become unuseable. 720p video was the next to go along with my ability to render anything in less than 30 minutes - 1 hour. At last attempt to use premiere I was getting an "Unable to compile movie - Unknown Error" message when trying to render alpha channel things (lower third titles and things of the nature), my ability to change the resolution of the playback had disappeared (Going from full, 1/2 and 1/4 did nothing, it just remained at full quality) and finally doing anything in premiere caused it to use 300% of my CPU (based off of my Activity Monitors metering).
Does anybody have any clue as to what could be happening to my machine/program? I have a yearly subscription to adobe's creative cloud service if that helps. Oh and I've tried moving my media cache's from my HDD to my SDD with little or no results. Don't know if that helps.
Thank you to anyone who helps in advance. What I believe to be clean installs aren't doing anything so I'm hoping somebody can give me a hand.

Sounds to me like specific media is dragging the Mac to a halt. (300%, really Apple? Isn't that like saying that my car can go up to 90mph, but last night I drove it at 300% speed, 270mph)
    Some things to trouble shoot:
Do you have any assets in the project that are loaded directly from strange devices, like a SD card or CD audio? Any dynamic link media that may be problematic?
Is there anything that makes this footage different than footage from successful projects?
Can you work successfully with an old project?
Can you successfully start a new project using different or less media?
Is the 500 GB drive internal or external?
One time I was sent out at from work to troubleshoot a system that would freeze up like yours. The guy was an idiot and rude client that demanded that someone from our facility help him fix his own project. He said that he had been troubleshooting for a day, and then had convinced his organization's IT guy that he needed a way over spec new pc to run Premiere.
His system was fine. Within 3 minutes of checking media in his project, I saw that top track of the problem sequence had a video clip that was set to a speed of .01%, and he had the clip stretched for 24hours in the sequence. His project was supposed to be a 2 minute PSA. All his issues went away after removing the idiotic Day Long slow motion clip. He complained to my boss because I had laughed at him.
I relate that story to illustrate that it could be a weird thing with you media or fx, just as well as a hardware or software issue.
    Good Luck

  • PS CS6 Extremely slow and sluggish. Brush tool delay.

    Hello everyone.
    I own a copy of Photoshop CS6.
Switching from Photoshop CS to CS6, I have found this version to be extremely slow and I can not find a reason why it is like this. It is impossible for me to work on it.
Problem: Slow performance, when using the brush tool there is a long delay - lag. The brush takes more than 8 seconds to catch up with my strokes.
    Software:
    Adobe Photoshop CS6 x64
    OS:
    Windows 7 x64 SP1
    CPU:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE
    GPU:
    Radeon 6790 OC @ 920Mhz
    RAM:
    A-Data DDR3 1333Mhz CAS9 4GB (x2)
    SSD:
    A-Data 510 128GB SATA3
    HDD:
    Samsung SATA 1TB
    Tried:
    - Memory usage allowed upgraded to 6GB, nothing changed.
    - Default selected "Scratch Disk" is the main SSD which has over 58GB of free space, I've tried selecting the secondary HDD as well but nothing changes.
    - Disabled the "Use Graphic  Processor" square. nothing changed.
    - Disabled the "Use open CL" square in advanced Graphic Processor Settings. Nothing changed.
    - Changed power management settings in windows to "High Performance". nothing changed.
    - Disabling tablet pc service doesn't help.
    Notes:
    - Graphic drivers are the latest release on AMD website
    - Windows is completely updated
    - SSD Firmware is the latest available.
    - The issue happens both with mouse and tablet.
    - 1px brush and 5000px brush lag just alike in zoomed and not zoomed canvas.
    - This happens on both x64 and x86 versions of the software.
    Any help is aprecihated.
    Thank you in advance.

    ForeKeith wrote:
AMD replied to my email just today and said that my graphic card should be compatible and should perform great with the current drivers.
Wow, they went out on a limb and said that?    AMD clearly is denying any problems just as any corporate entity appears to do nowadays.  Didn't someone once say "shoot all the laywers"?
It's pretty clear the Catalyst 12.4 release is a bust with Photoshop.  Lots of people have seen that.  And I just checked - AMD hasn't released Catalyst 12.5 yet.
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx
But I agree that your card is MORE than powerful enough.  Mine is slower than yours and my Photoshop experience is quick and interactive.  There is a SPECIFIC PROBLEM that's manifesting here.
But just to be absolutely, completely, undeniably sure we're not talking about a performance issue with very large files, please do the following:
    1.  Create a new, blank document as follows:
    2.  Choose the Brush Tool then reset it by right-clicking in the little brush icon at the upper-left and choosing Reset Tool:
    3.  Make the brush 1000 pixels in size, fully soft.
    4.  Set the foreground color to something other than white and brush quickly from the upper-left corner of the image to the lower-right.  Roughly how many seconds does it take for the actual on-canvas stroke to get all the way to the bottom (i.e., how far behind does it get)?
    Is it:
    Nearly instantaneous?
    One second behind?
    Many seconds behind?
On my system with this big brush and huge image, it gets about 1 second behind.

  • ITunes is extremely slow and I cannot make a secure connection

When I connect to iTunes my computer is extremely slow, and when I try to connect to the iTunes store I get the error message cannot make a secure connection.  I have internet access and I have ran the iTunes diagnostics test and all the tests passed except making a secure connection.  I have disabled all of my security systems including my firewall and Norton.  I am not running any proxy settings.  This has been an ongoing problem for over a month and I am at a loss.

Check out this Apple article -> iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting
Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows)
Configure Internet Options (for Windows computers only):
Run iTunes Diagnostics. If the "Secure link to iTunes Store" section does not pass, do the following.
    Open Internet Explorer.
From the Tools menu, choose Internet Options.
    Click Connections.
Under "Dial-up and Virtual Private Networking," choose "Never dial  a connection." It may not be possible to choose this if you’ve never used  dial-up Internet; if this is the case, skip to the next step.
    Click LAN Settings.
In the window that opens, enable the option to "Automatically detect  settings" if it is not enabled.
iTunes uses Internet Options proxy settings. Apple recommends  removing proxy settings that interfere with access to the iTunes Store  if needed.
    Click OK.
    Click the Advanced tab.
Scroll down to the Security section and look for the option to "Check for server certificate revocation." If it is enabled, disable it.
Look for Use SSL 3.0 and Use TLS 1.0. Make sure at least one of  those two checkboxes is selected and click OK (You can select both checkboxes).
Apply any changes, and restart your computer if you modified the option to "Check for server certificate revocation" (step #11).

  • Itunes 10.4 extremely slow and "hangs"

Ever since I upgraded to Lion, the new iTunes is extremely slow, and constantly "hangs" (showing the dreader Beach Ball of Death).  This happens for an especially long time whenever I'm downloading podcasts and otherwise syncing my iPod Classic.

The problem about screen size values happens to all video that I import in Itunes from the same source (my Samsung HMX-H100P HD Camcorder).
The strange thing is that if you look at the scren size values with other software (QuickTime, Avidemus), the values shown for scren size are corrected as expected: 1280x720.
I installed Itunes 10.4.0.80 1 month ago and it was the first installation of Itunes on my PC.
Reinstalling (deinstall + install)   Itunes is not a solution to the problem: I tried this yesterday without success.

my imac (intel core i5, OS 10.10.1) shuts down every night and will not "wake up" next morning -- it never used to do that -- if I hold down the start button more than twice for many seconds, then it will finally boot up and works fine all day – I’ve tried shutting it down and unplugging it, and that does not work -- I’ve run disk utilities checked permissions, and run anti-virus and get no adverse results – I cannot figure out what is different that causes this problem

From previous experience 3 indicates a shutdown initiated by the SMC (System Management Controller) — hardware responsible for many low-level functions including power, sleep, lights, and fan activity.
    Try resetting it:
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
