Extremely slow boot on MacBook Air
Hello!
Up to one week ago my MacBook Air was booting in 10 seconds.
Suddenly it takes over 3 minutes to startup. I did not have installed any particular application or service in the last weeks
I checked the logs and the only strange lines are:

I tried to resolve the issue by resetting PRAM and reparing the disk (no repair required).
Thanks in advance.
Do you have bootcamp or a VM installed?
Remove all external devices then test. Do you still see the same slow boot?
This solution was posted here:
Clear the kext caches:
sudo chown root:admin (enter password)
sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
sudo kextcache -system-caches
Do in terminal and reboot. make sure your start up disk is still selected correctly in preferences.
If you search on "ASL Module "com.apple.appstore" claims selected messages." you'll find lots of results and none had the magic bullet fix.
If performance after login is not affected, you might have to live with this until there is a fix.
You need to report it to Apple Feedback so it can be logged and put in the queue to be fixed.

Illustrator CS4 is extremely slow on my MacBook Pro
Illustrator CS4 (14.0.0) is running extremely slow on my MacBook Pro. After selecting an object nothing happens for 3 seconds, than the color wheel rotates for 3 seconds, then I can continue working. This is repeated for any new action, like select, rotate, copy, etc. The ActivityMonitor shows 100,2 % CPU usage during these seconds, all other processes are between 0 and 1,5%. All other CS4 programs are running fine.
I have no other application running at the same time, I chose "performance" over battery lifetime in the system preferences, deleted all the "Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings" in the preferences folder for a fresh start, used the Adobe CleanSwipe tool, all installed printers are on and connected, HD has lots of free space, I work only from the local HD, have only 60 fonts installed - but no improvement. Even if I have a new document with only one object in it, this goes very slow.
Then I followed one of the recommendations in this community, installed a new user account, started Illustrator from there - and the problem was completely gone, reaction time and speed as it should be!!
Something in my initial (admin-)account is causing this problem - does anyone have a clue what it could be?
Any hint would be appreciated very much.
MacBook Pro 15" Oct 2009, 2,66 Ghz, 4GB, GeForce 9400M+9600M GT, HD 500GB (7200rpm), Mac OS X 10.6.3That are 2 very good leads, but unfortunately I already tested that: I uninstalled all fonts, so there are only system fonts left - no improvement. I also started the admin account without any start elements (pressing "shift" during boot) - no improvement. The processes (all of them) except Illustrator are all at 0%, some can reach 0,7% - only Illustrator itself is at 100,4% for these few seconds. There is no difference between the admin account and the second user account regarding the Activity Monitor.
But the solution must be somewhere in the difeerence between the two accounts - user preferences, application support files, ??? -

Why is my iPhone 5 S WiFi speed 50% slower than my MacBook Air 2012?
Hello jagimc,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398
Wi-Fi disconnects, or signal strength is less than expected
Move closer to the Wi-Fi router (access point).
Check for sources of potential interference.
Remove any case, stand, or other accessories from your iOS device and see if signal strength improves.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings including: previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords, recently used Bluetooth accessories, VPN and APN settings.
Best of luck,

How to Install Airport Extreme Utility Software on MacBook Air
Here's my dilemma: I have an iMac G5 which I use with Remote Disk to install software on my MacBook Air. But when I try to use my new Airport Extreme install disk, I get an error telling me the software cannot be installed over a network. If I try copying the package, I just get an alias (and the original can't be found: voodoo!).
How do I get the Airport Extreme software on my MacBook Air???? Why is there no download link provided?
Any help gratefully received.Nina Tovish wrote:

Here's one:

That version (5.4.2) won't work with the very latest AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule units, which need version 5.5. -

Why is my safari slow on my macbook air after update to yosemite
I updated my MacBook Air to Yosemite a couple of weeks ago. Since then several websites I frequently use take very long to load and some features don't load at all (i.e. fitbit dashboard). Before the update all worked fine.
Hi Allen, I too have had similar issues. Could I get you to look at the Etre report I just ran and offer some comments? Would more memory help anything? I kind of hesitate to do that on a whim with a machine this old.
Problem description:
Safari is slow to connect to web pages. Typing in mail hangs.

OS X Lion - will it slow down my Macbook Air?
Does anyone know if the new OS X Lion will slow down the perfromance of my Macbook Air which has the following specifications:
2GB, 1,86 GHZ
or is it better to stick with the OS X 10.6.8?
I read today that Lion is having an impact on machines which have processors less than 2GHZ and are only equipped with 2GB
Thank you.I did an inplace upgrade on my Gen1 13" 80GB IDE MBA model.
Whilst it was always an overheater of playing anything flash or full screen video I find the performance has not changed since my upgrade.
I am a light user.
Internet/cloud documents/messenger & remote desktop/VPN
The boot time was always poor for my MBA, but that said, how often do we reboot them
Ever since day one, I've never been able to run imovie/CS3 as it would throttle my MBA, but Lion installed fine, even when my HDD was 90% full. -
Why endless shutdown during booting? - Macbook Air 10.8.3 update
After updating from 10.8.2 to 10.8.3 my Macbook Air 13" mid 2012 started to shutdown during booting.
I have tried to reset the SMC and PROMs several times with no result - still shutdown during booting.
The same result when starting in "safe" mode - shutdown in the end of booting.
When booting in verbose mode the last lines befor shutdown was:
AppleLMUController::smcReadKey received error 0x84 when reading key 'MSLD'
AppleLMUController::smcReadKey received error 0x84 when reading key 'ALV0'
It's no problem using the macbook air in target mode and use as the startup disk on another macbook.
The other mac start fine and run smoothly on the system 10.8.3 on the disk from the macbook air that shutdown during booting.
Before updating there was no problem with the computor...
What to do?Run the #12 OnyX cache clearing routine, it's a lot of stuff to do and will take awhile, but it's very through on reseting your sub-system items like it was when it came from the factory.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
After rebooting it should sail like the wind, except bootup apps.

Extremely slow boot. How to get rid of white screen in Windows only boot.
Hey guys I have a Windows 7 only MacBookPro 17". 2.8ghz core 2 duo, 4 gig of ram, 7200 rpm 500gb hd(passes s.m.a.r.t. btw)
It boots extremely slow. I turn the computer on and it stays at the white screen for around 20 seconds. Then it moves to Windows 7 and continues to boot from there. I have a video:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xc5taaslow-windows-7-boot-on-macbook-protech
In a windows only setting how would I get it to just boot Windows without going threw the white screen? It also gets hung when logging in on a black screen.
There was a post on Ubuntu forums about Ubuntu only boots about doing something to get it to only boot the MBR. I didn't really understand if this would work with Windows 7 though. Thanks for any help.I shut down all but one of the extensions, and that seems to have resolved the problem. Thank you!
Now to figure out which extensions I need, and which I don't, because I don't have a clue. I don't remember installing most of these, I only recall one or two (nothing looks spammy like funmoods, but still don't remember when or why these were added...) -

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
{ sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
{ launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
Step 4
ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal. -

Beachball on boot with MacBook Air + kernel_task using 138% of CPU
My wife's MacBook Air has recently become unusable - when you boot, it seemingly operates fine until the Finder launches, at which point the beachball appears and persists indefinitely. No applications can be launched, files accessed, etc - the only think you can do is hard shutdown.
Booted in Safe Mode and set Activity Monitor to launch on startup, then restarted in normal - kernel_task is using 138% of the CPU consistently, beachball issue present.
Shut down and booted again in Safe Mode and the issue is not present, with kernel_task using an appropriate amount of memory. This is the wife's computer, I'm a PC guy, so I only know little bits of Mac stuff - repaired permissions, etc - to no results. Any ideas on how to move forward in resolving this?
Thanks in advance.First, you might delete the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file while in safe mode.
Then try this:
Delete caches to resolve some startup problems:
Boot into single-user mode. After startup is completed you will be in command line mode and should see a prompt with a cursor positioned after it. At the prompt enter the following then press RETURN after each commandline:
/sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK." If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way.
If you were successful then enter:
/sbin/mount -uw /
rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/*
rm -rf /Library/Caches/*
reboot
I suggest you print out the above in a large mono-spaced font to be sure you do not make any errors when entering the commands. When in single-uwer mode you have 'root' access, so it's important that you not make any mistakes. Note that there are spaces between a command and what follows, so be sure you type each line above properly. -
HT1338 Air Port Extreme not compatible with MacBook Air/iPhone?
I have an airport extreme that only works for older Macs. It used to work with my iPhone, but has since stopped working for any iPhones and will not connect with my MacBook Air. It does connect with an older model of the Mac Book. What's up with this?
Ahh yes, that's not even a first generation.
It's possible it may have seen its day after all those years and heat. However, you could try to factory reset it, just to make sure nothings messed up in the firmware, etc.
If that still doesn't work, maybe see if a diagnostic can be done at a genius bar. -
Safari 6 very slow on MBA/MacBook Air.
I have a MacBook Air which is less than a year old. Granted, it is only the 2gb but for most things it does well. However, running Safari -- especially the latest version 6 -- is painfully slow on this machine. The same version of Safari on my iMac at home does not seem to have the same issue (or at least not nearly to this degree). And I do not have this issue with Firefox or Chrome (Opera does seem to have a similar issue)
Has anyone else had this issue on their MBA? Is it simply a memory issue with Safari being such a memory hog that it needs more than 2gb physical ram to run? Or perhaps it is just a CPU hog? Or perhaps there is something else which I have overlooked that would make a difference? Any thought/suggetions, anyone? I'd really like to speed up Safari on this machine. Safari's ability to save live links when saving a webpage to PDF is unique and much too usefull to make abandoning Safari an option for me.
Thank you.Take these steps when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.
