Extremely slow, constant freeze upon boot up and apps

I turned my pb12" on lately and it is very very slow, upon boot up now the scroll wheel of death is on and it will not boot to the desktop finder. So my question is this:
what the heck is going on??
I reset the pram
would not boot in safe mode
have 10gigs free
1gig ram
nothing unusual document or app wise lately
just about a few weeks ago it started to become sluggish to non productive.
any ideas as to how I can remedy the situation.
Much appreciated

Hi, Petoosh, and welcome to the discussions.
a) there are more people here with similar problems as yours. I recommend that you search the forum in order to see how they solved their problem. Did you "repair permissions"?; did you check the HD and memory?
b) MORE IMPORTANT: make sure that you have everything backed up. Just in case...
c) can you boot from the install disk?
what happens if you take off all peripherals (printer, external disk, internet connection)?
hope this helps. Please post back in any case.

  • My Mac is extremely slow, lags, freezes.... and it's only a year old.

I've contacted support three times, and it still hasn't fixed my problem...Now that my apple support is EXPIRED, its still having issues. If they fixed it the first, even second, ****, even the third time, then I wouldn't be here. I know nothing of Macs. I recently converted so I have no idea.
It gets better when I restart for a few hours then as soon as I run more then 2 programs it starts giving me the busy icon, my bars won't come out of auto-hide, and the last time I restarted, for some reason my background disappeared and now it's just the Default?
I need my computer for school as I'm Pre-Med at my University, Majoring in Micro with a Minor. I'm very busy, I don't have time to deal with this. Legit.
Please somebody help. Macs are supposed to be better than PC and right now, my last PC at least ran way better than what my Mac is doing now. That's bad.

  • Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart... please help.

    Hi everyone
Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart...
I've since backed everything up on an external hard drive, removed the corrupt library, even reinstalled the operating software and there is now hardly anything on the hard drive, it still runs painfully slow. If I close the lid which puts it in sleep mode, it either doesn't go into sleep mode but instead the battery just gets drained and I find it completely empty of power (it won't start again unless plugged in), or it goes into sleep mode but just freezes when I try to reopen.
In iphoto (reinstalled) but even other applications it is painfully slow, not like a mac at all!
I am trying to go to genius bar with it but thinking maybe someone in this forum can help...
    Many thanks
    Andre

  • PC extremely slow when files exchanged between LR and CS6

Thats what happens: I open a file in LR3.6, edit the file (.CR2) and open it via the context menue ("open in ...") in CS6 (as a copy with changes from LR). Changing/editing the picture works fine. Then I close it (CTRL W) with saving as .tif. Then the PC (WIN 7 Pro) becomes extremely slow (takes several minutes before it accepts the next click). Only way out seems to be to close LR and CS6. The situation is reproducable.
    Any idea? Thank you! Knut

  • CINEWARE EXTREMELY SLOW after update AE 13.2 and Yosemite 10.10.2

Hi everybody, I updated AE (13.2.0.49) and OSX (10.10.2) and CINEWARE got extremely slow even If i try to open a basic simple .C4D project file (just 1 cube with no material, lights or others)
I think the updates has problems! Anyone knows something more about that?
    Thx

There are a couple of bugs in the 13.2 version of Cineware, but speed issues weren't really one of them that I recall seeing. Considering the amount of problems Yosemite is causing folks with and without Adobe software, I'd be pretty willing to place the blame on Yosemite. It's like the Windows Vista of Mac OSX...
There is an update coming to After Effects this spring that will likely include an update to Cineware to fix some of the bugs. And hopefully it will work around some of Yosemite's issues too.

  • Iphoto freezes upon boot up.

Lately, iPhoto has been freezing on boot up. I get the endless spinning beachball. Now what?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Extremely slow: constant beachball and no apps function

I am using a late 2009 MacBook Pro.
This morning I woke up to a fine computer. I checked my email, browsed a bit online, then shut the lid (sleep). I went to class and checked email. Then I shut down my MBP. I then turned it on later. This is when I started to have problems.
I can barely use finder, opening a window takes forever, and opening folders takes ages. Beachball is constantly spinning. Trying to open other apps (iChat, Mail, iCal) opens the window, but they all beachball and cannot be clicked or quit. I need to hold the power button to shut down.
I have tried resetting PRAM, SMC, and also I booted from install disc and verified/repaired disk and permissions.
I used Apple Hardware Test which said there is no hardware problem.
What can I possibly do? I did not bring my snow leopard DVD from home. I am trying to find a friend with SL so I can clean install after I try to hook up my MBP with another mac to save my files.
One theory I have is that Aperture 3 broke my mac. It was the only thing I did in the past week. It supposedly runs the hard disk really hard and maybe it corrupted my snow leopard (since disk utility and apple hardware test said the hardware is fine)
what can I do to save my mbp? I have midterms notes, as well as presentations, and work files and all my notes are on my computer!

    Hi Patrick Yan;
    Great. Good luck.
I wish I could get Aperture 3 but I still do my photos on my PowerMac Quad. I need to get a Mac Pro but I am going to wait until I get my tax refund for that.

  • Macbook Pro freezing on boot up and ran out of methods to fix it!

My Late 2011 Macbook pro has recently started acting up. Freezing on normally fine applications and bogging down to a hault. Now my macbook won't even start up. The progress bar is currently at about 50%, and that took about an hour. Its been running for 4 hours with no movement at all. It kept stopping at 50% every time I restarted it so I did some googling and tried to fix the issue.
Here is what I have done so far:
Verified and repaired the disk and permissions.
    Reset PRAM
Booted into single user mode and used the fsck -fy command
    Booted into Apple Hardware Test
** No problems reported by any of the above methods the hardware tested OK for all of above.
**I also tried to boot into safe mode, but it still got stuck on startup.
    Macbook Pro Specs:
    Model: Late 2011 13"
    Ram: 4GB
    HDD: 720GB
    Processor: Intel Dual Core i7
OSX: Yosemite (Not sure which version came on it when I bought it)
I even reinstalled OSX Yosemite and the problem still remains.
If there is anymore information you need that can help fix this issue, then please let me know.
If anyone can help me fix this problem I will greatly appreciate it.

Try running an Apple hardware Test:

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.

  • MACBook Pro - Extremely Slow with Freezes

    Hi,
I have this macbook pro model
      Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro9,2
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i5
      Processor Speed:          2.5 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          2
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          3 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
And with 385 GB out of 499 GB of free memory.
I have practically nothing on it, no huge files & not more than the basic apps., nothing !
However, I have a very slow response. Word sometimes takes a minute to open when I only have just Chrome running in the background.
It gets worse when many apps are running together, but even then its only basic apps nothing major. Safari would normaly take not less than 20 seconds to open. I have just dropbox thaat run automatically after start up but nothign else. Still most of the time I am faced with the slow response. The spinning beack ball is always on to, which makes me force quit alot of time.
My battery is working quite well
    Thanks for the feedback !

If you choose to use garbage such as "Intego VirusBarrier" you are going to need more memory, a lot more. I suggest you uninstall it according to its instructions, and evaluate your Mac's performance without burdening it with completely useless junk. As long as Intego remains active, your Mac will have few resources remaining to do anything else.
Using Intego's "Virus Barrier" and "Net Barrier" products on a brand new Mac containing nothing but one minimally configured user account resulted in performance degradation so severe that it became nearly unusable. No knowledgeable Mac user would consider using it even remotely tolerable.
Intego should only be uninstalled using the uninstaller included with it. Don't use anything else. A successful uninstallation will result in the following:
After that, restart your Mac. Other Intego components will remain but they will be inert and will not affect your Mac's operation.

  • Centro Freezes Upon Incoming Calls and Doesn't Register When Trying to Make a Call

I am currently on my second Centro since March 18th and both have had the same issues. Sporadically when receiving incoming calls the phone likes to freeze up. I have tried waiting it out to see what happens, but the screen stays. The only way I have found out of this is to remove the back take out the battery and put it back in. This has happened on base phone with no apps. I haven't even gotten to Versamail yet, which seems like that offers a whole assortment of new problems. So this is pretty much out of the box stock and it is this flawed. I have never owned a Palm device before and I must say this isn't giving me a good impression of the company. I am hoping someone here can give me a fix. I really like the style of the phone and the features when it is working, but I can't have a phone that won't answer or make calls. I believe that is the point of one. I'm tempted to just go back and get a Blackberry like my fiance. That seems to work fine. I don't mean to be threatening, but while researching this problem it seems like there is no answer and Palm isn't really doing anything to fix it. The closest thing I saw to an answer was that Centro is a new phone and is bound to have flaws. Is that it? We are stuck to suffer with a faulty device because we originally liked the product we purchased. If someone can help me it would be much appreciated. I want to keep this phone, but maybe it wasn't meant to be.
    Post relates to: Centro (AT&T)

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Community Forums.
First, I have removed your three (3) other posts on this same subject in other threads, as one is sufficient.
The vast majority of Centro owners seem to very happy with their phones, including me (and I am not a Palm employee, just a volunteer here).  My Centro (from AT&T, just like yours) works just fine sending and receiving calls.  So, that leads me to the conclusion that either:
Something is wrong with your individual device, which can happen.  Yes, I suppose bad luck can strike you even with two phones.  Or,
Something you are doing with the phone is causing a problem.
Did you upgrade from a previous Palm OS phone or handheld device on your computer?  If so, and if you are using the same Hotsync ID, then your system files may be that is the issue.  Even after you Hard Reset, try to use the phone BEFORE you Hotsync it back to your desktop.
If you still cannot make or receive calls with your Centro immediately after you do a correct Hard Reset (maybe you're not doing that correctly?), before Hotsyncing with your computer, then I would take the phone to your local AT&T store to see if they cannot give you one that works.  The Centro comes with a one-year warranty, and AT&T has a 30-day no-questions-asked return policy.
    Good luck.

  • Freezing upon boot...plz help!!

This is my sons computer and he started it up just fine.  Began to type in the search engine and it froze up.  He then tried to restart it.  When he did that the toshiba screen comes on stating press F2 or F12 (don't remember what they say.  The screen then goes black with a blinking curser in top left corner and it beeps a few times very loudly.   The screen then goes to one of three different system screens but it won't let you enter on any of the choices it just freezes. Can not get to the log in options or any further.  I have tried taking the battery out with the power cord plugged in but then it will only stay on for about 10 seconds and shuts off.  I have held down the F8 key while starting it and it still freezes.  I tried putting in the windows disc and starting it but I can't get anywhere with that.  The laptop is only a year and half old.  I know that windows was last updated on 5/1/11 and stated up to date.  He runs AVG antivirus and that was done on 5/1/11 alos and came back no viruses.  He shut it down on 5/1/11 as normal and didn't get back on it until 5/4/11 when all this started.  I know that it just updated to IE9 a few weeks ago.  He has never had any issues until last night it worked great until then.  He is running Vista.  Any suggestions?

  • Extremely slow navigation in full screen mode and other erratic behavior

    Hi,
Is it me or every new release of PSE feels heavier and more bloated than the previous?
I have PSE9 running on a dual core, one year old dell PC with W7 with 4GB of RAM. I have the maximum amount of recommended memory alloted to the program (set in preferences).
Ever since I upgraded, moving forward (or backward) to the next pic (via pagedown, or up) through the filmstrip in fullscreen mode has become very, very sluggish. Sometimes it just will not move to the next image even when thi image is in the same directory as the previous one.
Is this sluggish navigation normal? Or is there something that I can do to improve performance??
I look at images in fullscreen mode to decide which ones to edit and which ones to delete so I use this feature a lot. Another example of sluggish-- or in this case erratic-- behavior happens when looking at an image in full screen and then I decide to edit the image. I load the image to the edito by clicking the editor icon on the left options pane. Even if the editor is already open, sometimes it brings the editor to the ferground with the image ready to be edited and sometimes it does not; I have to cycle with alt-tab to make the editor active. Why this erratic behavior? Then, after saving an image and selecting the close button, you are supposed to be returned to the organizer... well this happens sometimes, other times I have to manually swithc using alt-tab.
Please help, this is very annoying.

I don't understand whether you have a Referenced-Masters Library or a Managed-Masters Library. Drives slow as they fill and with a Managed-Masters Library sooner or later the internal drive will become overfilled. I recommend a Referenced-Masters Library with Masters on an external drive and the Aperture Library on the internal drive.
iMacs, laptops and Minis are by definition limiting to heavy Aperture usage, so work carefully to optimize setup and workflow.
First is to max the RAM and make sure the hard drive stays less than 70% full. Restart the iMac prior to a major Aperture session and only have Aperture open. You should also investigate to see if a substantially more powerful video card is available at reasonable price.
Set Preview size to be exactly screen size and build Previews manually when the box is otherwise not being aggressively used.

  • Adobe reader XI freezes upon start up and wont work

    Hi
I am running Windows 7 home premium with 64bit system and Kaperskys antivirus.  Everytime I open adobe XI it freezes up and displays the thinking icon both on the mouse hover and right screen of the adobe reader.  I tried installing the older adobe X as a couple discussion threads advised.  The older adobe X works a couple times then does the same thing.  I need the reader to read and sign docs.  Does anyone know how to make it work on my comp???  Thank you!!!
    Cody, Bend, OR

Try these things for Reader XI...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
If you cannot open Reader by itself, try to disable Protected Mode in the registry; download, unzip, then run the attached registry script
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • Osx Snow Leopard Freezing Upon Boot

After dropping my macbook I had a black screen with just a cursor that would move though could not perform any actions. After reseting pram and smc, i now get to the screen with the stars and what looks like the aurora borealis or whatever. The cursor is there though nothing is happening when trying to click and when i press any keys, i gent that *dunt* noise indicating i have tried an invalid action. Does anyone know what might be the problem? I m hoping i wont need a new hd or mobo. This is my first time on the apple forums. Help please.

If you can insert a DVD, find your original OS X DVDs that came with the system, and insert the one that says "AHT Verion x.x" in small print on the label. Boot holding the D key down, and if that doesn't work, boot holding the alt/option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted, choose the extended test. This should tell you what hardware is working or not.
If you can't run the Apple hardware test, can you do a safe boot, where you hold the shift key while rebooting?
Can you insert and boot to an OS X DVD by holding the C key down while booting?
Do you have a bootable backup available to you? Boot holding the alt/option key down, and choose the external bootable backup.
If all the above are negative, then take it into the Apple store.
