Extremely slow display of imported PDF images

We have been using imported PDF images in FrameMaker for many years now with great success. However, something happened a few weeks ago that now causes several of our machines to take an extremely long time to display PDF images. For example, a 200KB imported PDF image that previously took less than 1 second to render now takes 14 seconds. It is now almost impossible to work with many of our documents, which contains 100+ images.
This has happened on several of our PCs running FrameMaker 8 (via the TechComm suite). These machines have the following software configuration.
FrameMaker 8.0p277
Adobe Acrobat 8.1.3
Windows XP Professional SP3
We have also disabled all plugins, but there is no difference - the problem still persists.
However, there is one machine in our office that is not affected. It has the following configuration.
FrameMaker 8.0p277
Adobe Acrobat 7.1.0
Windows XP Professional SP3
Is it possible that Acrobat is affecting the PDF import? Or is it recent changes to XP? Or something that has been updated in the background?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

In practical terms, you can always toggle the display of graphics off in FM, but that doesn't work for all situations.
A few things to check:
Did you optimize the PDFs when they were created? (You'd still want to avoid downsampling and compression, but optimization still reduces the size.)
Also, a lot of the graphics processing is memory-intensive, so you should be using machines that are loaded up with RAM and have healthy open space.
Finally, if it happens consistently, the machines' anti-virus programs may be screening everything every time each file is opened. So adjust those settings... That's easy to test for too -- just shut it off and try an import.
How heavily are the servers being hit by other applications and users, and how fast is the network? Not being able to serve the files quickly enough is another chokepoint.
Move a book with Bruce Foster's Archive plugin to create a local copy and test with that to see if the problem is actually FM and the local machine, or something outside.....
It may also be worth checking to see if the computers have the lastest graphics card drivers loaded too.

  • How to import PDF image into Pages manuscript that is larger than the text bed margins

How do I import a PDF image into a Pages book manuscript, whose dimensions are larger than the global text bed margins? Any imported PDF image is automatically shrunk to fit within the text bed. I know I can set up a single page with wider margins and a text bed within it, but I want the image to import to a page already within the manuscript sequence, where the text bed margins are set and constant.

By default it should be dragging in as a floating image and not part of the text.
What version of Pages are you using?
    In Pages 5 this is:
Format > Arrange > Object Placement > Stay on Page > Size > Original size

  • Updated to LR 5.4, images now importing extremely slow. After importing and rendering images are still very slow to go through and develop. No issues in LR 5.3 which was very fast.

After importing and rendering images are still very slow to go through and develop. No issues in LR 5.3 which was very fast. Canon,Nikon, Leica and Fuji files all rendering slow. iMac 2.9 ghz 16gb RAM OSX 10.8.5. Catalogs and images are kept on external drives. Drives running fine. Really need a fix on this since I'm norally imported and processing at least 4,000 images per LR Catalog. Is there way to revert back to 5.3? I can't use 5.4 is its current state. Thanks.

Download LR 5.3 and install it
By the way, lots of people have this complaint about LR 5.4, and the advice I give is to use LR 5.3 unless you need one of the new camera models supported by LR 5.4

  • Adobe Reader 9 - Extremely slow to open a pdf

I just upgraded from Adobe Reader 8 to Adobe Reader 9. I use Windows XP and Internet Explorer. When I try to open a pdf, it takes about a minute to open. This never happened with the previous versions.
Why is this happening? What can I do? Reinstall?

I upgraded. Now have 9.4.0 but it's still very slow on opening pdf files. It also stops when trying to go to page 2. Mysterious.

  • Extremely slow opening B&W PDF's in Photoshop CS5

I import many pdf files into photoshop so I can in turn resize and save them as jpg's. What I don't understand is that all of them are the same page size, and are being opened at the same 300dpi setting, but for some reason the Black & White pages take FAR longer to open in Photoshop. Sometimes it takes the grayscale pages up to 5 minutes to open! But the color ones open right up in like 15 seconds. I would think it would be the opposite. The PDFs are originally made in InDesign and are all saved by the same process. Any ideas on what I could possibly do to speed this process up would be greatly appreciated!

I can't yet guess at what might be going on, but I'm willing to try to open two files and see if I see the same thing happen - assuming you're willing to share two of the files (one color, one grayscale).

  • Imported PDFs look blurry

    Hi All,
I'm using Keynote 09 and when importing PDFs images they all look blurry, but the text and lines in the figure look OK. One way to avoid this problem is to convert the figures to PNGs... but then that does not solve the issue and it involves more steps. Any ideas on how to solve this?
    Thanks,
    Jaime

That's what it is. Everything else that's generated is a vector except for the grayscale bar and the grayscale pixelated image. Unfortunately, OSX's default way of dealing with images to make them look better is to smooth them. To see what it would look like unsmoothed, open in Preview, go into the Preferences under the PDF tab and de-select "Smooth text and line art". From your description, if there was a way to smooth only the vector and leave the rest unsmoothed, that'd be perfect, but I don't know if that's an option.
Is there anyway they could generate a higher resolution image for you (double 489 x 460)? The higher the resolution of that image, the less OSX would blur it.

PS. In CS3 what is the best way of extracting/editing a PDF image?
    inez

If you have Creative Suite 3, you have Acrobat 8 Professional. In Acrobat, to extract all images choose Advanced > Document Processing > Export All Images. If you want to edit one image in Photoshop in a PDF, set up Photoshop as your Image Editor in Acrobat > Preferences > Touchup Preferences. Then choose the Touchup Object tool on the Advanced Editing toolbar. Click on the image to select it. Control/right-click the image and choose Edit Image. It opens as a temporary file in Photoshop. You can edit it and save the file.

  • Image quality of imported PDF's

I am running Motion 2.1 on a Mac Pro w/ an ATI 1900 X card and 2 Gb of ram (I doubt any of this info--aside from the software version--will help, but I figure it can't hurt).
I am creating a project where a film reel runs across the screen. This is for an animated film that will be presented on a theatre-sized screen, so the quality of the image is critical.
The software I am using to create the character is called LineForm, and this is essentially a poor person's Illustrator. The software exports into a variety of formats, so I am exporting as PDF since, according to the following passage from page 455 of the Apple Pro Training Series Motion guide, resizing should not cause any image degredation:
"Motion will perform what's called a continuous rasterize of the artwork, preserving anti-aliased edges even at extreme zooms. To import vector artwork, it must be saved as a single-layer Adobe PDF document".
I have put my project files out on my host, so please check out the following:
http://home.earthlink.net/~placelogohere/film%20reel%201.pdf is the pdf I am trying to import into Motion. If you open this file in Preview, you'll see you can max out the zoom on it and still not see any pixelation, but Motion greatly reduces the quality of the imported image.
http://home.earthlink.net/~placelogohere/film%20reel%202.pdf is part of the character, also exported as a pdf, and I tried to import this into Motion and then reduce it. Needless to say, reducing the image size only resulted in even worse pixelation in Motion.
http://home.earthlink.net/~placelogohere/running%20reel%20test.psd is a single frame export from my Motion project, showing both of these PDF's after import. Open this image in Preview and, even on the first zoom, you'll see the pixelation I mentioned.
This Motion project is also out there as http://home.earthlink.net/~placelogohere/running%20reel%20test.motn . I welcome any advice and ask that this project, and the associated files previously listed, be opened and experimented with.

Mac Prod quad 2.6 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 Gb RAM, ATI Radeon 1900 X

I have tried both importing the full-size PDF (see
"film reel 2.pdf" in the link in my first post) and
reducing it, and also reducing it first and then
importing it ("film reel 1.pdf"). The results are
    the same either way.
I can see the pixelation almost immediately when
zooming in from 100%, so I'm probably about at 125%,
I'm guessing. At 200%, its incredibly evident.
anyone please feel free to correct me if i'm wrong - but any time you zoom in past 100% in your canvas you can expect to see a distorted image. this zoom doesn't affect your final output but it's essentially taking an image of a fixed resolution (in this case 720x480) and spreading it across a wider canvas.
i'd be interested to see what results you get if you create a new project using a higher resolution format (one of the DVCPRO HD ones?) and bring the footage into that.
make sure to disable fixed resolution for the individual media elements. i tried downloadaing your files and everything seemed to work pretty well for me. however - i'm using a computer with a small 15" 1440x900 display, so that might affect the perception. what kind of display are you using?

  • Unable to display a PDF image on the page - Mac 10.6

    Hi,
Running an iMac with 10.6.8 and Indesign 5.0.4. Just wanting to export a PDF as per usual via File > Export function. However, I keep getting the error message, "Unable to display a PDF image on the page'. No idea what this is and have never seen this error before. The only info on the internet reveals error code 0x2511(9489).
I've deleted prefs, closed down and re-opened Indesign and even restarted the computer. I've also re-linked the images contained in the document and even created a new document and set it up the same, but still the same problem. Investigating further, other Indesign documents still export properly.
The only ones that don't export are 2 documents, both giving this same error message. Both documents are ones where a client has sent a PDF, I've imported into two of these into an 2-page A4 Indesign document (each PDF is 48MB each) and then just added a text layer (using Times) which is properly installed on the computer. I basically have to 'update' course dates for the client and add PDF to the website, all very basic.
I've tried importing a jpeg and other PDFs into the file (replacing the existing ones) and they export fine.
All my software is legal and I've exported this document before now in exactly the same File > Export without any problems (under 10.5 and 10.6).
OK... I've just imported the offending PDFs into Acrobat, optimized and shrunk the file size, re-imported back to Indesign and the PDF export works fine. So it seems InDesign / PDF Export doesn't like large imported PDFs? I think they were originally exported from Publisher, so maybe that's the problem or a file conflict somehow.
Any ideas on the culprit? I've googled it, searched these forums and Apple discussions and haven't found anything. Although I've found a workaround, I do get large files to import and then export. Thanks for any help
    Steve

It does sound like a problem with the original PDF files the client sent you. You can check how they were made in Acrobat Pro from the Additional MetaData button on the Description tab of the document properties dialog. It will be under Advanced at the bottom of the list when the metadata opens.
You might be able to salvage them by running the optimzer and not changing the size, or just doing a Save As in Acrobat.

  • Indesign CC does not display linked PDF image on screen

On Mac1 (10.6.8) When I imported a PDF file into Indesign CC 9.1 as a linked image - the image would come in as usual, however the image would not appear on my screen. Only a blank page box.
I can see the thumbnail image of the imported PDF in the links palette correctly.
However, on my page it appears as a blank box.
Selected Hi-res preview, and still it appears as a blank box.
I export to PDF, and the image is there as it should be on the exported PDF.
I tried the same image on Mac2 (10.8.3) with Indesign CC.
The imported image appears correctly on the page. (no blank box)
I saved that file and opened it on Mac1 that is having the problem displaying the image.
Mac1 again does not display the image, instead it is a blank box.
Tried the same image import in Cs6. No issue on either mac1 or mac2
What could be causing the imported PDF not to display on the page in Indesign CC?
Has anyone else come across this problem?

  • File display extremely slow with call of OLE_FLUSH_CALL standard function

    Hi,
We are running SAP R/3 Enterprise 640 with Doculink extension.
When trying to display PDF files stored in an SAP Archive Server, it takes quiet a while to retreive the document, while displaying it through a web browser is very fast.
I have made a some performances tests in ST05, and the results clearly shows that the ABAP execution time takes most of the process time. When digging deeper into which function takes so many time, I can see that the standard program SAPLOLEA takes a long while on a wait for RFC call. And then when I display the source code responsible for this call, I see that the OLE_FLUSH_CALL call takes the most time.
I have tried to look around in SAP Notes but didn't find any relevant information regarding this problem. I wondered if I would be able to find more interesting opinions on SDN.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Thibault

Query returns anywhere from 6000 to 32000 rows. For each of those rows a parameter is passed in to 4 different functions to get ytd totals. When I call the functions in the in-line view but do not select from them in the main SQL, the report (oh, this is Application Express 4.0 interactive reports, just an FYI) runs fast. The report comes back in a few seconds. But when I select from the in-line view to display those ytd totals, the report runs extremely slow. I know there are the articles about context switching and how mixing SQL with PL/SQL performs poorly. So I tried a pipeline table function where the function for the ytd totals populate the columns of the pipeline table and I select from the pipeline table in the SQL query in the interactive report. That seemed to perform a little worse from what I can tell.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

If this is replacing Aperture and previous iPhoto it is USELESS...WAY fewer options for editing available. New "Photos" is a piece of JUNK!

    Hi.
I have just migrated my library from Aperture to photos. All seems to have gone smoothly, except for one thing. All of my photos are 'untitled', whereas in both Aperture, and previously iPhoto, the filename was used for the title. If I hit CMD+I and get info, the title is still there as the filename, as I use the filename for all titles.
Is there a way to batch copy all filenames as photo titles, this was done automatically in Aperture and iPhoto, as when photos were imported the filename was used automatically.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Pdf images won't display

In many display/annotate apps pdf files will not display images.
In Adobe's app most images disply properly, but some turn
    into black rectangles.

Thanks for your response, the thing is I don't want the end user to have to go through these steps in order to be able to see my pdf file as it renders in older versions of Firefox.
What I've noticed is the use of buttons and interactivity is not been rendered, so it doesn't even show up in the page. The drop shadows applied within InDesign are also not been properly render by the browser, making the background of the image surrounded by dark background.
I have temporarily fixed the problem by getting rid of my drop shadows and using regular hyperlinks on text instead of interactive buttons.
Hope this issue gets fixed, since interactive pdfs is widely used today.
    Thanks
