Extremely slow download speeds and internet browsing on Macbook pro

I recently got a 13"" macbook pro. System config - Maverick OS/i7 dual core/8GB RAM/750 GB HDD, Almost 690GB of free space available. I am expriencing extremely slow download and internet browsing speed. I have to wait for almost 10-12 seconds for normal sites to download. The app updates and downloads are painstakingly slow.
The internet speeds are working perfectly fine on my Windows Laptop, and even on my mobile phones. So, the there's no issue of network. Also, I have cleared safari cache etc, just to be sure. But nothing's really helping.
Can any one help me here.
Thanks !
Chetan

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Log out and log back in. Any change?
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • WRT310N Playstation 3 Slow Download speed and general lag

Hey guys, I just recently bought the WRT310N and got both of my computers working with it. One is wired directly into the router, while the other is running off wireless. My Playstation 3 is able to connect to the router but I am getting an extremely slow connection speed.
Right now, both PC's get about 6.4-6.5 Mbps download speed while my Playstation is anywhere from 600 Kbs to 1.2 Mbps. I have plugged in my Playstation 3 directly into the modem and got a speed of 3.2 Mbps and was downloaded a demo very fast, but I do not recieve anywhere near those results when using it wireless.
Any advice? I have tried opening the ports, but that only seemed to slow it down. A couple of days ago I opened the ports specific to the game NHL 10 and for two days I was getting such a good speed in the game that it felt like I was playing offline, which was great! Then this morning, it just seemed do a complete 180. Now when I play the game I get an extreme amount of lag, and my other games like CoD4 get random lag spikes. Like, I'll be running and I get a lag spike which seems to happen fairly consistently every minute or so.
Any advice? Should I try opening the ports again or what?

I think you need to adjust the wireless settings of your Router, The wireless settings on your Router must have been setup to its default that's the reason you are receiving low signal strength on your PS3.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Extremely Slow Download Speeds Compared To Pc

My PC when downloads the same file at 100+ kb/s when my MacBook downloads at maximum of 25-30 kb/s.
How can I speed it up.

I'm getting a slow download speed, what can I do to improve it?
If you are using a firewall or router, be sure that ports 6112, 3724, and 6881 through 6999 are open and forwarded to your computer and only your computer. Refer to your firewall/router's documentation for instructions on opening ports and setting up port forwarding. Also, make sure that no other programs that use bandwidth are running while using the Blizzard Downloader.

  • Downloading from the internet to my macbook pro

HI I could use some help please. everytime I download something from the internet and I chose to save it, it doesn't give me the option to save it to my desktop or a folder it just automatically download it to the download folder. I have another macbook pro same exact specs and it allows me to make a choice to where I want to save the item. Anyone know where I can change this setting and how to do it. I am computer illiterate so I do know how to navigate around a computer I just can't seem to see where the settings are different between the two computers. Thanks for any help anyone can give!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I assume you're using Safari - so open Safari/Preferences/General and under 'Save downloaded files to' set the location you prefer.
Another option is to control/click on a download link and you'll then get a pop-up menu where you can select 'Download linked file as' and chose the destination.

  • Slow download speeds and/or dropped internet connectivity

Recently, my fios internet connection will be intermittently slow or simply drop altogether on all my devices. The verizon speed test also shows that my download speeds are less than 1mb/sec whereas upload speeds are up to 15 mb/s. My service plan is 25/25. I have been using the service with no issues for the past 4 months. This seems to have come up out of the blue in the past few days. Resetting the router has no effect.   Is anyone else experiencing this problem? This is in Philadelphia.  I tried to call support, but had to give up after being on hold for 55 minutes. Going to try again tomorrow.

Sorry I haven't been able to update with more info sooner.  I am conncted with wifi. The location of my laptop with respect to the router has not changed at any time during the duration of these issues. Since monday when I originally posted, the following happened: On Tuesday the problem appeared to have been resolved as I was getting 29.5 down and 20 up at 7:00 EST. I tested again at 10:30 EST and was getting 17 down and 19 up so everything seemed good. Last night, however, the issue popped up again. I was not able to test until about 10:30 but at that time I was once again consistently getting less than 1 mb down and 5-10 up. Ironically, the download speeds were so poor I was not even able to log in to these forums to post without the webpage timing out. Tonight, I was having issues earlier (download speeds ~1-2 mb) but not I am once again getting ~30 down based on the verizon speedtest. I have not tried changing the channel of my wireless, could the interference from another wifi cause issues like this? IT is set to automatic right now though.

  • Extremely slow download speed on T420

    Hi Forum,
I really hope you can help me somehow. My download speed on my T420 is extremely low, 500B/s, and from my ISP i have 5/0.6 Mbit. I've tried different browsers, tried to change anit-virus, tried to turn off anti-virus but nothing seem to help. However, this problem only occours on my T420 not on my other laptop or smartphone, where i can reach full speed. Furthermore, at some sites I can actually maintain the correct speed. Simply dont know what is going on, but its a pain in the..
    Im using:
    T420
    Access connections
Wireless G network (situated 5 meters away)
    Best regards

  • Extremely Slow Download Speeds when MacBook Pro is not plugged in.

I have a MacBook Pro 17" that I bought in May of 2007. I have Verizon High Speed DSL service. I have a Netgear wireless router. When my MacBook Pro is plugged in to a power outlet, it has very fast download speeds. As soon as I unplug it, it slows way down. I am talking like 2 or 3 minutes to load a page that would normally take about 1 second. Is there a setting I can change?

i have a similar problem. My MBP is taking a while to load pages. I dont know if its my internet speeds or my computer.

  • Extremely slow file transfer from wifi server to MacBook Pro

I am experiencing extremely slow file download speeds from my wifi server to my MacBook Pro. I have just carried out a test - transferring a 16.5Mb folder took 8 mins, 24 secs. Transferring the same folder to my iMac G5 takes less than 3 seconds. Also, copying the same folder from my MacBook Pro to my wifi server only takes 22 seconds. Any suggestions PLEASE!!!!!

Try getting it on the Mac using something other than iPhoto.
In Windows, it would simply be a matter of opening Explorer and copying the file(s).  I'm fairly certain that Mac has a similar feature, but I'm not familiar with Macs.
Not really an iPhone issue... more of an issue with the application being used to import the file.

  • Download, battery, and sleep problems on macbook pro with retina display after upgrading to Mountain lion

After waiting a few days to download OS X Mountain lion, I finally installed it on my new MacBook with retina display a couple days ago. I love the interface and all the new features, but I've noticed some problems I really need to resolve. I'm constantly downloading large files and I noticed thhis change:
Before, on Lion, I could download files from Safari or the Internet and the computer would sleep whenever it was set to on energy preferences and the download would resume. This would let the computer conserve energy so the download could progress further when on battery. Now, I noticed that my computer never goes to sleep! Its set to have the display sleep in 5 minutes and the computer in 15 on both battery and when plugged in, but it never does either. I don't know if it has to do with the fact that power nap is on even when using battery. So now the Mac is constantly on when downloading something and instead of downloading a one gigabyte file that would take up 15% of my battery, it takes up 60% since it never sleeps. When I tried downloading something and then manually putting the computer to sleep, the download was interrupted and it said Wi-Fi connection lost so I have to start the download over again.
That's basically all three problems in one situation. I even put the brightness all the way on low so the screen is black when downloading, but it still uses up much more battery than before. Can someone help find a solution?

Did you try turning off power nap?

  • 7.6.4 apple extreme slow downloading speed

Since downloading Airport Firmware 7.6.4 to my AirPort Extreme and Airport Express my down loading times have slowed.  I have a good signal on all devices.  I should have 20 Mbps of upload and download, my upload speed is 18 Mbps on speedtest.net but download is 2 Mbps.  When I bypass AirPort Extreme and connect my computer directly I get 18 Mbps of uploading and downloading.

I have a fast connection from airport extreme. But all of my 3 airport express routers, configured to extend the network, are very slow: about 1/10 to 1/5 the speed of the airport extreme: 45-50 versus 5 mbps (though it varies somewhat). There is no great distance, no major obstacles, etc.  Strangely, the upload speed is faster: 8mbps vs 5. There are sometimes a handful of devices connected to the network: a few phones, an ipad, a laptop or two. B
I've tried all the solutions I've seen on these forums, including downgrading the firmware. Made no difference.
The airport express units are roughly a 1.5 years old.

  • Extreme slow download speed

I am trying to download the RoboHelp 10 English Windows setup.  I started the download and I can see the Akamai Download Manager is downloading the files.  However, the transfer rate is 5 B/sec and it will take 19000+ hours to download.  In addition, the download manager periodically pause the download from time to time and I have to unpause it by hitting the play button.
I am doing the download at work so the network speed is not an issue.
Is there something else I should be doing to get this downloaded?
    Paul Chan

Network speed between you and the download server could be a factor.  You can try canceling the download and trying again.  Alternately you can try download using a different Internet connection or service provider.

  • Slow download speed and ip profile

I have a problem with a line that will only download at 336kbs, the line is normally fitted with an nte200 but has also been tested with an adsl filter connected to the test socket with a seperate modem and laptop with the same results. The line will support 4000kbs yet the ip profile is set at 350kbs when a speedtest is carried out using the BTW speedtest. I have been told by BT technical support that there is no way possible for the ip profile to be changed manually. any suggestions how to get the profile changed please.

normally the profile will reset itself if you maintain connection 24/7 for 3/5 days maybe sooner
please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) http://speedtester.bt.com and post the results .
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Antivirus and Internet Security for Macbook Pro

I see adds for software like Mac Cleaner all over the place.  Should I have a Antivirus program on my Mac.  I know it is neccessary on PC based equipment but I am not sure if I need it for Mac OS.  Can someone help or offer a suggestion?

Mac OS X versions 10.6.7 and later have built-in detection of known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
The most effective defense against malware is your own intelligence. All known malware on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of Mac OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of trojans, which can only work if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, merely in order to use the site, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim.
“Cracked” versions of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Disable Java (not JavaScript) in your web browser(s). Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those versions has bugs that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. Those bugs will probably never be fixed, because those older operating systems are no longer being maintained by Apple. Migrate to a newer version of the Mac OS as soon as you can.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.
