Extremely slow DSL speeds. Up speed higher than Down speed. Please help.
I just purchased the 1.1 - 3.0Mbps hi-speed DSL package.
Verizon speed test shows .17Mbps down and .536Mbps up. This is obviously curious for two reasons: 1) the incredibly slow down speed, and 2) the down speed being slower than the up speed.
Curiously, speedtest.net shows different results:
2.45Mbps down, .55Mbps up
What could this mean? Transceiver data follows.

OK. It seems as though you're suffering from what some people call "Juniperitus." If you're on a Remote DSLAM that uses Alcatel Litespan equipment (Litespan 2000 for example) along with being connected to a Juniper Networks ERX edge router, there tends to be an incompatibility between the two pieces of equipment that causes TCP connections and pretty much any other form of transfer to see artificial packet loss, which results in transmission. This results in inefficiency in every transfer, so what you're seeing is simply a result of all of this. In the past when Verizon first installed Litespan, they were using older Redback Networks edge routers, which did not create such problems. I'm on a Litespan and happen to still be on a Redback in my area (one of remaining ones still in operation in my area) and I get my max line speed with no issue. It's unfortunate that these actually perform better despite the Junipers being far better edge routers in terms of capacity.

IMac extremely slow after upgrading to OS Lion...suggestions please..
We recently upgraded our iMac to OS Lion from Snow Leopard and it seems like everything now takes twice as long to start. Opening applications, opening documents, switching to another user name, pretty much everything takes forever. I love the operating system, but feel like I am using a 10 year old computer. If anyone here has suggestions on how to speed things up, I would greatly appreciate it.
I have tried logging out all other users to free up some of the memory and that really doesn't help.
I love my Mac, please help....If it is a new installation, spotlight can take forever to do the first indexing. I put my Sleep option in Power preferences to "never" (On mains power that is) and leave the computer lid open / on all night.
There are also other things going on, like, software updates,(both from Apple and third party), maintenance scripts (that run on schedule at night), Backup, iDisk and iCloud syncs (the first uploads can be large), etc.
Once the initial cludge is cleared things get much better. But get that RAM upgrade. Crucial delivered mine within 24 hours of ordering

Hey guys I'm posting this in hopes that maybe someone could figure out what is causing my new build to reboot loop without post if I added anything higher than 8gb of ram stick. I updated the bios to latest non-beta version, drivers all updated, and made sure that all connectors were correct and properly attached.

Everything is at default options since I didn't want to overclock without including the full 4 sticks of ram. Whenever I add a stick into slots 1 or 2 while having a stick in either(or both) slots 3 and/or 4, and attempt to start it up, the mobo's debug shows 55(early memory initialization) and then gets stuck in a reboot loop. It boots up fine if I only add 1 stick in either slot 1 or 2 but if I add either a stick in slot 3 or 4 or add a stick in 2 while having a stick in 1, reboot loop occurs. I've searched everywhere for similar problems and actually did find one on this forums, https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162331.0, except that the thread starter's problems were about getting the reboot loop problem after he has overclocked his system and nothing about the number of ram he has added.
fyi: the mobo names ram slots(from left to right) as slots 3, 4, 1, 2 (in case anyone gets confused reading what I have wrote above)
Some assistance would be greatly appreciated.Honestly, it doesn't matter what slots are what number because I cannot add a 3rd stick (more than 8gb) without pc going into reboot loop and or any variations of dual channel setup without pc going into reboot loop.

0 B Page-outs1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Ive (touch wood) had very few problems with my broadband however the last couple of days the speed has dropped dramatically.
I usually get around 4mb but currently am lucky if I get 1mb. Nothing has changed in the house.
I tried to use speedtester.bt.com to measure what I am getting but get this error.

Airport, DSL and IP problems! Oh My! Please Help!
Every time I think I have this figured out, I get stuck again. Everything has worked fine with my network for years, now problems.
I am using a DSL modem from SBC Global connected to Airport Extreme. I then have 2 laptops that access the network.
In re-installing everything I think something got messed up.
The only way I can get the laptops to find internet over the wireless network is by the DSL Modem being plugged into the LAN port. But then I can't get both laptops on the network at the same time. (I think it's only sending out one IP and whichever laptop gets it first, the other one says that the IP is in use.)
When I run the Airport Admin Utility it tells me that I should have the modem going into the WAN port, but when I do that, I get no internet over the wireless at all (but do not get the IP error message on the 2nd laptop).
When I try and change the settings in the "Network" Menu... I have it checked to "Distibute IP addresses" and have the top choice set (Share a Single IP). When I try to change to the 2nd choice (Share a Range of IPs) it wants me the change the "Internet" menu to a static IP address, which I think I can't because SBC Global throws out dynamic IP's (if I have that right - meaning everytime I click re-new DHCP lease, I get a new IP).
In the words of Charlie Brown, "UGGGGHHH!". Why is this always so hard.

Powerbook G4 1.67 Ghtz Mac OS X (10.4.8)When I run the Airport Admin Utility it tells me that I should have the modem going into the WAN port, but when I do that, I get no internet over the wireless at all (but do not get the IP error message on the 2nd laptop).
The correct network configuration should be something like the following:
DSL modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN port] AEBS > (wireless) > wireless clients
If your DSL ISP does NOT require PPPoE for connectivity, then use the following to double-check your AEBS's settings...
Modem/Router Power ReCycling
- Power-off the DSL modem & AEBS. (Wait for at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
- Power-on the DSL modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
- Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
Setup the AEBS
Temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, check these settings:
AirPort tab
- Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
- AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
- Create a closed network (unchecked)
- Wireless Security: Not enabled
- Channel: Automatic
- Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
Internet tab
- Connect Using: Ethernet
- Configure: Using DHCP
- WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
Network tab
- Distribute IP addresses (checked)
- Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled) -
Itunes is wrongfully saying some songs have been authorized on more than 5 computers -- please help!
Hi, can someone please help me. ITunes is saying that some of my songs have been authorized on more than five laptops, which isn't true--it's not letting me play those songs, and I have no way of deauthorizing the accounts on three of my old laptops. Please help!
If you have any other computers, have ever created alternate iTunes libraries or used iTunes in other user accounts, you might want want to try and deauthorize all. Then you can authorize the computers you are currently using with iTunes.

You can use or sync your purchases from the iTunes Store on up to five different computers (these can be any mix of Macintosh or Windows-compatible computers). When you sync or play an item you've purchased, your computer is "authorized" for purchase using your Apple ID.
To deauthorize all computers associated with your Apple ID
If you need to authorize your new computer and are unable due to already having five authorized computers, you can deauthorize all computers by doing the following:
Click iTunes Store on the left side of iTunes.
If you're not signed in to the store, click the Account button, then enter your account name and password.
Click the Account button again (your Apple ID appears on the button), enter your password, and then click View Account.
In the Account Information window, click Deauthorize All.

My Hard Drive Won't Slow Down! please help
Hi everyone,
I just got my B&W powermac up and running again after some upgrades: a radeon 7000, 500 Mhz Sonnet G4, 1gig of RAM... Well all of a sudden my hard drive just spun all the way up and will not slow down no matter what. I went to system preferences and checked "put discs to sleep when possible" - Nothing. I ran Onyx and cleared all my caches and what not - Nothing. I have restarted, reset my PRAM, pressed the CUDA button... I'm out of ideas. And my hard drive is raging like it is booting up or something so I don't know what to think. Please help me slow my hard drive down. It is a WD Caviar 40G, and I am running OS 10.3.9 and it is totally up to date. Thanks so much for any suggestions!

I have only messed with jumpers one time and I was following a chart to set up a slave drive on a Dell and it was a long time ago... On My B&W, what exactly would I looking for if it was a jumper problem?

in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router unless hh4/5 may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results .
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?

Extremely slow DSL internet service
I live in the Stroudsburg PA service area and have been experiencing dowwnload speeds of 0.07mbps to 0.20mbps for over weeks.I spoke with numerous technical support people with no correction of the problem. It is virtually impossible to get to anyone in management but, with persistance, they will connect you to a "supervisor". After numerous hours on the phone, refusing to accept their insistance that nothing was wrong, a lineman was dispatched on 2 occasions, He spent a total of over 8 hours over the two dates and confirmed there is a service issued in this service zone. I learned it was called a "catina" problem, but giving it a name does not help me.
The lineman contacted numerous other Verizon personnel and discussed the problem, including his supervisor, to no avail. This matter effects a large number of Verizon customers in the local area and remains unresolved. Despite this, I keep getting messages from Verizon telling me the problem is "fixed" THIS IS FALSE!.
I am paying for high speed DSL and am getting speeds that are slower than my old dial up modem from the early 1990s. I have tried to speak to anyone in a management position, or even email someone, but cannot. It appears that Verizon has no method to interact with their customers, only automated, generic replies.

To ensure you know when they have responded to you, at the top of your support case there is a drop down menu for support case options. Sprint slow Internet speed out of no where anyone else please help
I have a sprint iPhone 4 and suddenly my 3G speeds have been really slow I don know what could be goin on I've called sprint and they have refreshed my service and it's still happening I have also done restores
My brother has the same iPhone 4 with sprint and his speeds are up to 1.24/ 1.98 mbps downlaod and .78/.89 upload
And my speeds are slower the highest speeds I've gotten are .79 mbps download and .45 upload
Slowest speeds I have gotten which is the most common speeds I get now is about .14/.16 Mbps download and .45 uploadIn my personal opinion, Sprint iPhone seems to have issues when switching from wi-fi to 3G. It seems to cause a (hickup) in the data speed. This seems to be pretty consistant (75% of the time), when going from wi-fi to 3G.
The following steps tend to fix it 95% of the time.
Before you try the steps below, make sure you give your phone a SPRINT network update (not apple update, however...an apple update is a good idea too.)
To perform a sprint update, open your phone keypad, like you are going to make a phone call. Then dial ##UPDATE# then press "call". You will get a popup that says "starting service update" . press "okay" . the popup window will close. For 60-90 seconds, your phone will look l,ike nothing is hapening. You will then get a message that says "service update complete". press "okay". the popup will close. At this time, look at your 3G symbol on the top left. It will dissapear as the phone reconnects to the cell tower. When the reconnect happens , you will initially see a "o" where the 3G symbol was. then within 5-10 seconds the 3G will appear again. At this point power the phone off. wait 60 seconds, then power back on.
Now, next time your phone data is dragging, the next step should fix it.
#1, go to settings>airplane mode>off. wait 60 seconds, then turn back on. This will reset the tower connections and fixes the issue most of the time.
#2. If #1 doesn't help. Power the phone down, wait 60 seconds, then turn back on.
#3. If #1 or #2 doesn't help, contact sprint.
This is an ongoing issue with Sprint for me, I have called NUMEROUS times, and this is Sprint tech supports most effective solution. However , no one can tell me how to keep this from occuring.

Slower than Dialup! Please help
My connection has gotten really terrible lately. Speedtests from a variety of sites show between 0.08 and 0.5 Mbps on a 1.5-3Mbps package. Modem and router is a Netgear DGN2200. Computer is a fresh Windows 7 install. Computer is hardwired to the Netgear, and wireless is turned off for testing. I even went out side, ran a line to the test port, disconnected all the house lines, and the speed didn't increase any.
This is the closest I can find to the transceiver stats (while plugged into the test port at the NID):

Go to Solution.That would be a correct guess. That jitter value is way too high, and even though the NDT test isn't showing any cable faults/packet collisions, nor is it seeing any packet loss really, it is a congestion issue on Verizon's end. This is espeically trus since, as you've pointed out, it only occurs during the night time hours. What you can do to get this problem solved, is to visit the Verizon Direct forum over at DSLReports.com and ask them to move you to a less congested circuit at the CO, if possible. Additionally, if a Verizon Employee posts in this thread with some contact information, they can also help you solve this problem.

Hi folks. Since my last software update, my computer has slowed to a near halt. Help!
I have a late 2009 MacBook Pro, running OS X 10.8.2. 2.26 Ghz / 8 gb memory.
I went into the Disk Utility and ran "verify disk," and got an "ok." Verified and repaired disk permissions. No idea if they're relevant.
At this moment the activity monitor is showing 3.79 gb of free memory -- 10 minutes ago, when I was doing nothing particularly differently, it showed all 7.99 gb in use (active and inactive -- I have. No idea what this means.)
It's all beach balls around here, all the time. Any ideas?Your problem is excessive swapping of data between physical memory and virtual memory.
That can happen for two reasons:
You have a long-running process with a memory leak (i.e., a bug), or
You don't have enough memory installed for your usage pattern.
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination. In Activity Monitor, select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more memory over time without ever releasing it.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details:

How do I change the color of the clipping path
Just installed Photoshop CS4 I use the pen to create a clipping path for isolation. In CS3 the path line always contrasted with the background I was working on. In CS4 it is only gray so I cannot work on grey background pics as I cannot see the path.
