Extremely slow interface

I'm using iDVD 7.0.1 and experiencing an extremely slow user interface that is essentially unusable. After sending a 2 hour video (3.27 GB) from Garageband 4.1 to iDVD, the interface becomes hopelessly sluggish after auto-filling the drop zones. Any click on the interface results in 20-30 seconds of massive disk activity at about 45-50 MB/s. CPU runs at about 50-60% for iDVD. There is no paging activity.
Once the disk activity dies down, the interface responds. The next click sends it into a fit again.
In the map view, if all the chapters are visible as thumbnails, then it takes much longer to respond. I have to keep the map window as small as possible to display as few thumbnails as I can.
I've closed all other apps, even rebooted, but the problem persists. It's almost like it's reading through the large file trying to find each thumbnail and autofilled area.
Ideas welcome.

Please tell us more about the audio track you are trying to use (as in what format its in). Tell us about the source video as well, how it was imported, and from which camera / camcorder.{quote}
It originated in EyeTV, was exported to iMovie, had chapters added in Garageband and was imported into iDVD. I have no idea how to find out what format it's in. Although it sounds messy, I repeated this exact sequence with a 35 minute long movie witout problems.
The movie I'm attempting now is very close to the 2 hour limit of iDVD. I suspect the problem lies there.
{quote}I also need to know how much available Hard Drive space is currently on your startup volume and if any of this audio or video is currently on an external firewire HD.{quote}
I have 183 GB free on the startup volume. All content is on that volume.
{quote}How much memory is on your computer.{quote}
As you can see from the bottom of my posting, I have 2 GB of memory. At the time of encoding there was several hundred MB free in Activity Monitor.
{quote}Have you repaired permissions?{quote}
Yes.
{quote}I also need you to drag and drop this item to the trash and try the movie again.
com.apple.iDvd.plist
Lastly, Restart the computer. Post back if this fails to address this issue.{quote}
Done. I'll repeat the encoding now in High Quality to reduce the time it takes to test this out. If it fails, I'm going to split that sucker in two.

    My MacBook Air running on Snow Leopard gets extremely slow (almost like a hang, except if you wait about half an hr, it actually moves) after login interface. Sometimes it never gets past the background of the homepage, desktop doesn't seem to load. After multiple forced shut downs and left to run for hours, sometimes the desktop loads but the dock does not respond when applications are opened. The computer is then unable to shut down normally. Forced shut downs are necessary most times. Time machine backup takes extremely long, and attempts to use the time machine to bring the laptop back to the time befiore the problem arose was met with extremely slow and hung time machine function.
    Please help!

    There isn't much besides a failing hard drive or other hardware fault that can cause those symptoms. Run the Apple Hardware Test, or just take it to an Apple Store for testing.

  • Choose Disk interface extremely slow

    Odd problem. On my MacPro I've been backing up to an external FW800 drive for quite awhile. Earlier last week I moved that drive to my Leopard Server, repartitioned it and reformatted it. I've made it available as a time machine backup destination and my Mini and MBP are happily backing up to it now.
    Problem is on the MacPro when I select "Change Disk" in the time machine preferences it takes forever to bring up a list (at least a minute). On that list I see my local drives and the server drive. Each refresh of the list takes a minute or more (i.e. I click no disk or the server drive). Eventually I get the server drive selected and when it goes to back up it says the drive can't be mounted.
    Any idea what's going on?

    Hello oswaldt,
    Do you still experience the "slow interface" problem with Time Machine?
    I had the same with Mac OS 10.5.4 Server on a PowerMac G5. The problem went away after a fresh install. But now having switched on a MacPro and done a bit of configuration on the server, I get the "slow interface" problem back.
    Here's what I've done so far, so you may recognize something in your setup:
    - Server boot disc is a mirror of 2 x 250 GB (internal).
    - The 2 other internal drives are 500 GB each, and were concatenated.
    - A Sonnet Fusion D500P is connected through a Sonnet Tempo SATA E4P controller card. Tower is loaded this way:
    -- bay 1: 500 GB
    -- bay 2: 500 GB
    -- bay 3: 1000 GB
    -- bay 4: 500 GB
    -- bay 5: 500 GB
    bay 1 and 4 are stripped (STRIP1);
    bay 2 and 5 are also stripped (STRIP2);
    STRIP1 and STRIP2 are mirrored;
    bay 3 is the TimeMachine backup drive;
    All disc mirroring, contenation and stripping were done using DiskUtility.
    [edit]: I've forgot, I also have a 300 GB Maxtor OneTouch drive connected through FireWire...
    The MacPro has 8GB of RAM.
    On the server config side, I have:
    - Fixed IP address;
    - working DNS setup with a custom-made top-level zone for the LAN;
    - freshly started OpenDirectory service;
    - AFP service running (automatic configuration, I've touched nothing);
    - no other service running for now;
    - hostname returned by command "hostname" in Terminal is not <nameOfComputer>.local. It's a fully qualified name like server.gti.lan.
    Note that, on my side, although the interface is very slow, I can get TimeMachine to work. So I suspect there are two problems in your case: slow GUI response time, and then drive-related issue.
    Let me know what you can find. I've seen very few posts regarding that problem, and found none answered so far...

  • WiFI extremely slow in Arch

    I have a new install of Arch after deciding to give it a go after 6 or 7 years on Gentoo.
    The only problem I am experiencing is extremely slow internet. 1.58Mbps vs 31Mbps previously in Gentoo.
    Google seems to indicate a lot of people have similar issues with Arch, but having followed the Wiki to the letter and not finding any solutions on Google I am stuck at where to start.

    Please let me know what logs to upload, any assistance appreciated. I will continue to search myself.

    If you are using a USB WiFi device that can potentially change names with different ports, it would probably make sense to either create a persistent name for that particular piece of hardware, or go back to the old naming scheme if you don't have another wireless card.  The idea of these crazy names is that if you have two wireless cards, two ethernet cards, or even an ethernet card and a broadcom wireless card (which also uses the eth* namespace), you will never know which will be 0 and which will be 1.  But if you tell the system what to name them, then you can at least have your netctl service run on a given interface name and know what it is going to be.
    Having said all that, you should also be aware that other network management solutions deal with changing interface names much better then netctl.  Netctl needs the interface name to be specified in the profile, so if it changes you are kind sh*t out of luck until you make the manual changes necessary.
    To see if you have multiple network management services trying to handle things, run "systemctl --type=service" to see all the services you have going.  If you see more than one that should be handling the network (for example, if you enabled [email protected] during setup) then you need to figure out which single management solution is going to best fit your use case and go with that one only.  Most commonly, people still ahve dhcpcd.service or dhcpcd@<interface>.service around.  But it is also not uncommon to see people with netctl-ifplugd@<interface>.service running along with netctl-auto@<interface> at the same time, which will also cause issues.

  • 1415 fnw printer wireless connection extremely slow or not working with OS X, works with windows

    The wireless connection to the printer is either extremely slow or not working at all on OS X Yosemite.  It shows up in the list of printers in Bonjour in Safari, and I can connect to parts of the web interface if I wait a very long time.  However, I cannot add the printer as a new printer in System Preferences even though the printer shows up.
    I have upgraded to the latest firmware.  The WiFi indicator on the printer is on, "green", and it has a reserved IP showing up in my router (ComCast).  It seems that Windows machines can printer to the printer wirelessly without a problem.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hello @sscotti,
    I would like to assist you today with installing your wireless HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw Color Multifunction Printer on your Mac OS X 10.10 Computer. Now you indicate in your post that this printer works fine with Windows computers, and you are able to 'see' the Bonjour printer on your Mac. Therefore, the issue that you are experiencing is not network related. Rather, I do believe that you are experiencing a driver conflict on your Mac OS X 10.10 computer. Can I please have you run the steps below to resolve this issue.
    Step 1: Uninstall Drivers and Software:
    First, I'm going to have you 'clean up' your Mac OS X 10.10 computer to verify that any trace of your Laserjet printer is gone so we have a nice clean slate to work with. Please click here and when the website opens select the drop down for 'Mac OS X v10.6, OS X v10.7, OS X v10.8, and OS X v10.9' as the steps are the same for Mac OS X 10.10. Run the appropriate uninstall steps for the method in which you originally tried to install your printer: Apple Updates, or the HP Driver download.
    Once the uninstall is complete, please proceed to the next step.
    Step 2: Verify and Repair your Disk Permissions on the Mac:
    Open Macintosh HD and go to Applications
    Go to the Utilities Folder
    Open the Disk Utility
    Select the Hard Drive volume you are using (usually on the left)
    Select Verify Disk Permissions
    Once that process is done, select Repair Disk Permissions
    Step 3: Check for Apple Updates:
    Go to Apple
    Select System Preferences
    Select Software Update
    Click Update Now
    Install your available updates
    Restart your computer
    Step 4: Reinstall your Software and Drivers:
    Please click here to download the appropriate Mac OS X 10.10 drivers for your HP Laserjet printer.
    Once the website opens select the 'download' button on the top left
    Once the download has completed, please follow the onscreen steps to reinstall your printer.
    Once the reinstall is complete, test the print and scan functions to ensure that your printer is functioning as per normal.
    Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Should you still be experiencing issues there are additional steps I can have you run through. I look forward to hearing from you. Good luck!

  • A few (not all) websites extremely slow

    I know very little about computers, but my husband and I are very frustrated with our internet on our iMac.  Over the past few months, a few websites have been extremely slow to load (5 to 15 minutes to even get onto a home page.)  It's only some websites (mainly Facebook and Comcast, our local internet provider's site that my e-mail is through.)  We've had our high speed internet connection checked out and that's no the problem.  Neither is our wireless router or our modem.  We now realize it's our computer itself.
    I've cleared history/cookies/cache to try and speed things up, but nothing has worked so far.  Like I said, it's only a handful of websites.... everything else is fine.  Why is this happening and how do we go about trying to resolve it?  (Go easy on me... I'm no computer whiz but I can certainly follow instructions on how to try to fix things.)  Thanks.

  • Pages runs extremly slow

    I am using a powerbook 17", 1.67 GHZ, 1.5 GB RAM with 10.4.2.
    Pages is excellent but extremely slow. When placing a table or a graphis, it takes seconds for changing on letter. Same when moving a graphic on the side to her right place. Sometimes when clicking on a object to move it, we still have to wait 10 - 15 seconds.
    We like pages and the great user interface. But the speed makes it impossible for using it in the whole company. Can anybody help?
    Thanks a lot
    PS: all other programs are running fine and quick.

    One of the things which is slowing pages down for you is the wrapping.
    What I have done in the past, while making templlates, is to use the layout feature for the majority of the text flow if a page has a graph or large image in it. Rather than have the program wrap the text with the precious cycles on my 800Mhz G4 ibook, I preformat the text layout. If you are making a large number of pages in your documents where the graphic is in the same spot then try building a layout for the text and then placing the graphic, table or other element where the page is 'empty'.
    A hint is to use the upper part of the page for your images and stuff. It iss easier to have the text start lower down the page since it can be a bit difficult dictatin where the text will stop on a page.
    Another thing is if you have been using the program for a while, save the document. This will commit the version of the document to the hard drive instead of having the revisions and text sitting in memory. It's also a good habit to get into.

  • Update to Mavericks 10.9.5 made my MacBook Pro extremely slow!

    Update to 10.9.5 made my MacBook Pro (2011) extremely slow. I upgraded on the 30th Sep and since then it's getting worse and worse. Today was totally impossible to work with it.
    It freezes in Safari or iTunes, several Apps crash, Numbers stops responding all the time, loses wifi, loses connectivity with printer/scanner, overheats, puts memory into pressure and drains battery. I have run Disk Utility, repaired permissions but nothing works. I have already backed up my stuff to an external drive.
    How do I fix all this?? I'm getting desperate. Thanks.

    Hi Linc,
    Thanks for your input!
    In fact, the major problem happened around 04:00pm yesterday, the 14th. It has been getting worse since the update on the 30th.
    I tried as much as possible to be selective but in 2 hrs a lot happened. Most of code repetitions were deleted.

  • Extremely slow performance transferring data over USB with Time Capsule

    I have the 2TB wireless Time Capsule. I have it setup as an extension to my current WiFi at home, since I already had a WLAN router. I have an external harddrive (500gig) that I connected to my Time Capsule because I wanted to transfer data from the Time Capsule to the external HD. The external HD is formatted with FAT32 file system, so read/write is no problem.
    When, using my MacBook Pro, I navigated to the Time Capsule and dragged files over to the connected USB harddrive (connected directly in the Time Capsule), the performance to transfer is extremely SLOW! It was slower than doing the transfer completely wirelessly (USB drive connected to laptop and transfer wirelessly from TC)!
    I do not understand this at all! It should be a simple transfer using the USB connection! When I do a transfer from my laptop directly to the USB harddrive, with it connected directly to the laptop, the transfers are super fast!
    What happened? Can someone please explain this or tell me what I need to do?
    Thank you!

    I am still confused here.
    My original question was regarding the use of my USB external harddrive. It was connected to the back of the TC. The TC was wirelessly speaking to my WLAN router. Using my laptop (also wirelessly speaking to WLAN router), I navigated to the TC and saw 2 listings - one for the data on the harddrive in the TC and one for the new external USB drive connected to the back of the TC. I wanted to transfer data from the harddrive in the TC to the USB external drive. Based on what I expected, I thought the transfer rate would merely be limited by the USB 2.0 interface that is being used by the external drive. However, I was definitely wrong! The transfer rate (shown by the estimate in time to transfer the data by my MacBook Pro) was doubled to 14 hrs.
    Originally, it was only 7 hrs when the USB external drive is connected directly to my laptop and I connect to the TC wirelessly. Weird!
    So why doesn't the TC simply transfer the data from its internal harddrive to the external USB drive directly without using any wireless technology?
    The second question I have is regarding the setup of the TC itself. I have a NetGear WLAN router and its an "n" router. So the speed is good. I have my TC currently downstairs from the WLAN router. Therefore the TC is setup as simply a wireless harddrive. It speaks through the WLAN router in order to be available to all my laptops in my house. My question is whether it should instead be directly connected to the WLAN router using an ethernet cable? Would this improve my overall transfer rates to/from the TC?
    Thanks so much.

    my imac is extremely slow...
    spinning circle...
    videos take long to load...
    youtube site is very problematic, mostly keeps loading without playing...
    or it plays for 3 to 4 seconds then back again to start...
    with facebook the screen turns black if i minimize page...
    is it a graphic card problem or sftware or what...???

    Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply. For 10.5/10.6 Network, highlight Interface>Advanced button>DNS tab>little + icon.

  • Blackberry Z10 became extremely slow after OS update to version 10.3.1.2243

    Hi,
    My Blackberry Z10 became extremely slow after OS update to version 10.3.1.2243. For example it sends text message 10-15 seconds after send button has been hit.
    Can not answer the phone when a caller is calling (answer slide interface is unrespnsovie), if I want to launch any application screen turns black and nothing happens, etc.
    Does anyone experience similar issues?
    Thank you.
    Michal.

    Hi and Welcome to the Community!
    A quick read of this site will answer your final question quite clearly. The "fix" depends on several factors, but given what you describe I recommend you immediately update, via AutoLoader, to the most recent version (.2582)...some of the prior versions contain some particularly challenging issues, which are reported to be fixed in this version.
    Good luck and let us know!

  • Network connection extremely slow after snow leopard upgrade

    I should first state that my son's new Intel Mac Mini (2009 model) is working fine without any issues - it is on the "n" band. My wife's macbook (on Leopard) and my Thinkpad are continuing to work fine - both connecting to the "g" band of my Simultaneous Dual band AEBS.
    On my 2008 model mac mini, the installation went thru fine, but the network connection is extremely slow - it is connecting using the "g" band. Even when I launch the Airport utility, it takes a while to locate the AEBS and then when I click on "Manual Setup", it takes a very very long time to read the configuration. This tells me that the airport interface on the mac mini has some driver issue.
    I tried all the suggestions given in other threads (listed below), but none of them worked.
    1. Created a new network location and rebooted
    2. Trashed the com.apple.airport.airportutility.plist and rebooted
    3. Rebooted countless number of times - illogical, but that kicks in when I can't find a solution.
    It is past midnight here (20miles from Apple headquarter). Going to wait for another 30minutes. After that, I will use SuperDuper to install my Leopard back on my mac mini which I had cloned before starting the installation.
    Appreciate any suggestions - I am open to any prayer solution as well! If not, the Snow Leopard family pack is going back to the Apple store on Monday.
    Just saw at engadget: "On a 17-inch unibody we were putting through the paces, the WiFi inexplicably has gone out and we have yet to get it working again."

    Some more info about my setup:
    *Simultaneous Dual band AEBS:*
    Radio Mode: 802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11b/g
    Radio Channel Selection: Manual - 161 (5GHz), 6(2.4GHz)
    *Airport Express:*
    Wireless mode: Extend a wireless network
    Allow wireless clients checked under the name of the network (same as for AEBS).
    Both are WPA/WPA2 Personal security. And both the routers were upgraded to 7.4.2 firmware this morning with the hope that it will help.
    *N Devices (both working fine):*
    Apple TV 40GB
    2009 Model Mac Mini upgraded to Snow Leopard - working perfectly.
    *G Devices:*
    Thinkpad running WinXP
    Dell Laptop running WinXP
    Acer Netbook running WinXP
    iPod Touch
    iPhone 3G
    Linksys webcam
    _All of the above are working fine_.
    +2008 model Mac mini -+ upgrade to Snow Leopard shows extremely slow wifi connection that it is unusable. It takes 20min to load apple homepage. When I boot from the clone of my Leopard lying on my external drive, it works perfectly.
    I compared the settings between all the tabs of Network-->Airport-->Advanced and they are identical between Snow Leopard and Leopard mode except that SL doesn't have the "Apple Talk" tab.
    Appreciate any help to debug this.

  • Flash CS3 and CS4 "Test Movie" extremely slow, ridiculous.

    This is a problem that, having read many forums, affects a very large amount of people, though Adobe doesn't care at all. It only affects OS X users.
    When I use Flash CS3, and I make any animation, even the simplest tween, and I preview it with Test Movie, the result I get is an extremely slow playback. Something like half the FPS it should be.
    However, when I export the SWF and preview it in the external Flash Player or in a browser, it's just fine and fast.
    Another interesting thing is that in CS3, when I open the Help panel, the problem with Test Movie only happens like 20% of the time. In that case, it only gets solved if I restart or Log Out at least. I have no idea why the Help panel being open solves the problem, this only shows that this is probably a little graphic user interface bug, or something similar, that could be solved very very easily.
    In Flash CS4, there is no Help panel, so there is no solution to the problem.
    It would be nice to be able to press Cmd + Enter to see the movie, and not have to do File > Export > bla bla bla, open Finder, Find the SWF, double click it, wait for the browser to open... etc...
    I have a brand new 2.5 GHz MacBook Pro, and Test Movie runs faster on my 900MHz Pentium III PC!! Funny...
    Here are some links I found about this problem:
    http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-878
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb407896
    http://www.kirupa.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-258991.html
    This is quite ridiculous, and on Adobe's Support page, the solution is "Do not use Test Movie."
    And the funny thing is that they didn't even bother to fix this in CS4...
    So basically if something doesn't work, Adobe's solution is "Don't use it."
    I guess they're right!
    Please, tell me if anyone has this problem or knows anything about it!
    Thanks,
    Mate

    1) Every post I see that you have made recently reflects on problems that are most likely associated with your computer that are causing problems with your software. 1st thing I would look at with your problems (and I do not mean just this one) is a conflict with another program, ei antivirus software, etc. Trying turning off programs one by one, relaunching your CS programs, and see if you can find a culprit.
    2) With that kind of attitude you are only going to receive just as friendly/helpful solutions. Just because SOMEONE ELSE doesn't solve YOUR problem does not mean that THEY are ignorant.

  • Data transfer extremely slow

    My wifi network seems to be very slow in transferring data - Airplay on ATV or file exchange between macs is extremely slow. Playing Airplay video from iOS to ATV is worse than watching Youtube. My internal network appears slower than my internet connection.
    Any suggestion on what I should check or reset? Thanks
    It is a provider's Huawei modem and an Airport Extreme router, distance few meters. I will not wire devices:)

    Please also note that using a "speed test service" like speedtest.net or other is a measurement of your WAN link, ie from your router's WAN interface to the specified test location. This is not a measurement of throughput to your "client device".  These results would be the same between your wireless client connected at a poor 1Mbps speed and your 1Gbps wired desktop.  Do not use these types of services as a measurement of throughput of your internal infrastructure.
    Keep in mind file transfers in windows (like copy and paste to a file share) utilizes Microsoft's SMB/SMB2 protocol which is very chatty and very inneficient.  This is not a good throughput test.  Utilizing a pure TCP transfer method, like FTP, would give more realistic results.  Even better would be to utilize an application like iPerf to perform pure tcp/udp throughput testing.
    Also, Microsoft tends to display transfers in terms of MegaBytes, rather than MegaBits.  Your 100Mbps (megabit) internet would provide a potential throughput of 12.5 MegaBytes.  The same as on your LAN.  When you're copying a file to a share and it's going at 2megaBytes per second, this is actually 16 megabits per second.  So, your client connected at 54Mbps, half-duplex, realizing a throughput of probably around 20-25mbps is actually doing pretty good to get 2-3 megabytes of transfer speed using SMB file transfers.
    Unless you have true tcp throughput tests prior to changes and after changes, the data you have provided thus far is not indicative of poor performance.

  • Everything Extremely Slow

    Since I've owned the iPhone from last March, I have dutifully upgraded it every time, followed Apple's troubleshooting instructions, fully restored it over a dozen times and yet have been plagued by seemingly endless problems. I don't think this is anything new for most iPhone users I have read on these discussions and personally know.
    However, one problem which has been there since the beginning and seems not to go away no matter what I do is extremely slow load times when switching between applications and typing e-mail mail, SMS & contact info. A typical example is pulling up the contact window and having to wait several seconds as I continually poke into the search box waiting for a cursor so I can start typing. Then when I start to type, often one letter will enter and everything will freeze for several seconds until i can continue typing. Then when typing an e-mail, this behavior will often show up randomly as if the iPhone is struggling to keep up with my relatively slow single-finger-hunt-and-poke input method.
    Frankly the two things, slow app switching and sluggish response and staggered input problems, have me at wits end. After dozens of restores since I bought it, I am wondering if this is a universal problem or if I should start pressing Apple to replace it.
    Anyone else experiencing these problems? I know at least one other use that has not only had these problems since his original 16GB iPhone and they have continued to plague him on his 3G iphone which he purchased in part hoping the general interface speed would improve, yet it has not – in fact he claims it has gotten slower. This leads me to believe it is Apple's use of an underpowered ARM processor and the iPhone is simply incapable of running at real-time speeds. But this is just one user.
    Anyone with these problems able to solve them?

    Hey, I have had these problems as well. It started about a week or two after I got my iPhone. But I got fed up with it recently and went to the Apple store. They restored it completely and it has worked perfectly ever since. Maybe you just have to restore it completely. Have you tried just completely wiping everything and not installing the backed up version that iTunes stores? Try and start fresh and see how that works.
