Extremely slow internet and staying connected

I got Verizon internet almost 2 weeks ago. Ever since then it has been nothing but one problem after another. It cuts out so many times a day. I have to reset the modem 20+ times a day. Its very frustrating. I tried talking to customer service about it and they dont do anything, all they say is to go to the troubleshooting page and look around on there. I am ready to cancel because it is getting ridiculous. My modem is the Actiontec GT784 and it has built in Wifi, which cuts out as well. And the speed of the internet and the Wifi is extremely slow when it is connected. SOMEONE HELPPPPP!!!

Bad timing to get FIOS, There's an outage and Verizon doesn't seem to be doing anything.

  • Extremely slow internet and 20-50% packet loss

This has been happening for at least a week. I've been trying to play online games such as dota 2 where I have up to 50% packet loss at times. I also try to watch streams however it is usually constantly buffering every 5 seconds on any quality over 240p. I have tried restarting both my modem and router. I've also done a ping test to google which came back with:Pinging google.com [216.58.216.110] with 32 bytes o

I am sorry to hear about the trouble you are having with this. Has this happened recently? I was able to check the connection history and it does seem to be much better for the past week. If the issue comes back let me know, we might need to have a tech check this. -FC

The people having problems not connecting without AC power was from the last OSX update to 10.5.8, this problem has since been resolved with an Airport Client update.
Your profile shows that you are running 10.5.6... I would suggest updating you software to the latest 10.5.8 as this fixed some Airport issues.
You may want to unplug the router, let it set a minute the plug it back in.
Is your Powerbook still having these issues? How long has the powerbook been experiencing this problem?

  • Windows 7 Ultimate (64-Bit) fresh install, only WLAN and video driver installed but EXTREMELY slow internet connection...

I recently checked my internet connection on my Asus G53SW and found that it was extremely slow on both the LAN and WLAN connections. I checked with a different laptop (old HP Pavilion) and I get a steady 74mbps+ connection using the same LAN cable and
also with the WLAN connection. My ISP has checked their side and everything is fine.
To try and resolve the issue I tried uninstalling, disabling and tweaking various software and even tried safe mode with networking, all to no avail. I then decided to do a complete fresh install this afternoon. I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
successfully onto my SSD and everything went smoothly. I have now only installed Nvidia video drivers and the (only) WLAN driver from the Asus support site.
My WLAN connection remains incredibly slow (amost half what it is on the HP and my MacBook Pro). Clearly this is an issue with either the Asus laptop or Windows but I don't know how to proceed in order to eliminate which it could be other than to try a different
    o/s to W7-Ult.
Can anyone help who knows more about this than me? Perhaps someone who has had a similar or the same problem because this is giving me a severe headache!
Thanks in advance to all and for any advice.

    if(null != object) object.Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url); }; </script>

Thank you for responding. As I stated in my original post the reason I went through this process was because of an extremely slow internet connection from both the WLAN and LAN connections on my G53SW. At that time I had all of the correct drivers on the
machine. Whilst I would agree that with the machine only having a video and WLAN driver it may well not be working 'optimally', the rationale for doing this was to get the machine working with the minimum of processes to show that it was not anti-virsu software,
Steam or the like causing interference.
I have changed out both of the HDDs this evening (a primary SSD and a secondary 1Tb HDD) for a clean hybrid 1Tb Seagate drive. Once I have installed all of the Asus drivers (and nothing else) I will try the speed test again and report back.
I can now report that with a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 and ONLY Asus drivers as supplied the issue remains. On a connection where I should see around 75mbps I am actually getting around 18mbps, sometimes considerably slower. This only affects
    my Asus machine.

Cured the problem! Reinstalled an earlier version of itunes from oldapps.com (version 10) now everything works as it should. I would suggest that if you are experiencing these problems that you do the same. I must say that it is a brave business decision on behalf of apple to effectively lock out all windows 7 users from their products and sales channels and I can only wish them luck in this very shortsighted policy.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Who can help to live, or slow internet and large packages

I have slow internet(mobile gprs 10 kBytes/s). Updating packages like "kde-wallpapers" or "kdeartwork-wallpapers" take a long time despite the fact that the contents of the package no major changes. If you do a binary diff, for example on the "oxygen-icons" you can only download about ~300 kilobytes. Can support in the pacman binary diffs of packages, and on the server generating diff`s of these files by utility xdelta3? Or make it a separate utility (such as yaourt) which will download the differences and generate packets, and pacman will install it.
Who now cant help me, please generate diffs(from testing kde 4.9)

  • Extremely slow internet connection for past few mo...

    Hello,
I am on a BT Total Broadband connection 'Option 3' (unlimited bandwidth). Router is connected to phone extension socket via ADSL micro filter.Been going strong for 3 years since setup. Since early October 2010, my connection speed suddenly dropped to an extreme low. There was no change at all around the home, nothing new, nothing removed. Prior to the sudden drop, the downstream was roughly around 9000 kbps according to HomeHub stats back then, which was good. But since early October and for the past few months the connection has not improved at all. Downstream has been staying constant at 462 kbs
I have also just tested against the test socket in the master socket, same result, no improvement.
Signal/Noise Margin is rather high from the average 6db I have read around the forums after looking into HomeHub stats (see below).
    ADSL Line Stats
I have posted my extensive HomeHub ADSL line details below:

    BT Speedtester results
Below is the BT speedtester results I have just carried out from http://speedtester.bt.com/:
    Summary
So my connection has dropped from around 9000 kbps to an extreme and sudden low of 462 kbps since October 2010. I have a feeling my line was automatically throttled for unknown reasons, but i'm unsure. Or it could be the high signal/noise? Can anyone shed some light, advice, assistance?
    Thanks in advance,

I've just carried out the 'Test Socket' test with my current phone (Phone A, a corded digital base phone) and router connected to the test socket via an ADSL micro filter. There was neither any improvement or degradation to the connection after 4 days. You can see the stats at the end of this post.
However, I have got hold of another corded phone (Phone B, corded only) and plugged this directly into the test socket and carried out the 'Quiet Line' test on 17070, and this time I can barely hear any noise, the noise I hear is very very faint, continuous and almost silent. Whereas when the test was carried out with Phone A under the same circumstances, the noise was truly noticeable and continuous with slight pulses.
In light of the above findings, i will soon carry out the same 'Test Socket' test this time with Phone B plugged into the test socket via the micro filter along with the router also connected for a few days to notice any changes in the speeds and report back.
This leads me to a question. How likely is it that a phone can introduce noise into the line and affect the broadband connection? Has anyone else experienced this (or heard of)?
Also, since my connection has been constantly slow for a few months now, will it take longer than usual for my broadband speed to reach normality due to IP profiling (from what I have read around)?

  • Airport Extreme Slowing Internet Connection

Hope someone can provide some direction for me!
A few weeks ago I started noticing slowed internet speeds, but thought nothing of it, and attributed the slow down to peak periods. About a week ago was the first time I ran a speed test due to a noticeable depreciation in connection speed. Then, and still today, I’m averaging about 3.4 mbps down / 6 mbps up both wireless and wired with Ethernet cable through the airport extreme. I have Comcast Blast which, until the slowdown, was averaging 20 mbps down / 6 mbps up.
    My setup:
    Macbook (mid-2010), OS X 10.7
    Mac mini (early-2009), OS X 10.7
    Motorola SB5100 Modem
    Airport Extreme 802.11n (3rd Generation)
Here’s the kicker: when my macbook is directly connected tothe modem (removing the airport extreme), I get amazingly fast internet (26mbps down / 6 mbps up).
I’ve been browsing around here looking for solutions since my warranty’s expired and have tried the following:
    thanks to this previous discussion
-Changed Frequency Channel to less populated channels
    -Changed Fireware Versions (was 7.5.2, tried 7.4.2, 7.4.1,and 7.4)
    -Moved the router’s location
    -Moved the
    -Reset the modem
    -Reset the Airport Extreme
    -Factory reset the Airport Extreme
-Made sure “Ethernet WAN Port” was set to “Automatic(Default)”
    -Changed/Temporarily Removed Security
Some users have found success (as discussed in the discussion linked above) by swapping out their cable modem. I own mine, so it would be a matter of purchasing a new one (though I'd rather not buy a new one if it's actually my Airport that's failing)
Could my Airport Extreme be dying and it’s time for a new one?
Any suggestions or thoughts of things to try?
    Thanks, Everybody!

Well, I'll see if you can explain this one:
As suggested, I used Airport Utility to switch the Radio Mode from "Automatic" to "802.11a/n - 802b/g." I was unable to find the option to select "802.11n (5) only - 802.11n only (2.4)."
I ran the test again with the following results:
         Client Side: [  4]  0.0-60.0 sec  497408 KBytes  67909 Kbits/sec
         Server Side: 0.0-59.7 sec  497408 KBytes  68253 Kbits/sec
    No Change.
I then discovered that under "Wireless Network Options..." my checked "5GHz Network" had become unchecked. I re-checked this box and connected both server and client computers to this new network and re-ran the test:
         Client: [  4]  0.0-60.1 sec  392192 KBytes  53496 Kbits/sec
         Server: 0.0-60.1 sec 392192 KBytes  53476 Kbits/sec
    Seemingly slower.
HOWEVER, now when I run an internet speed test, I'm consistently getting ~28mbps down/~6mbps up across all devices (mac mini, macbook).  I'm sort of unclear as to what's causing this change, but it appears, at least for the time being, that the issue has resolved.
Should I be concerned that the AEBSn is not transfering data near the 300 Mbps on the 5GHz channel? What else could be playing into this issue?

  • Extremely Slow Internet From Linksys WRTU54G-TM

    Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue. I got the Linksys WRTU54G-TM for T-Mobile's @home service. According to the store employees, I should be able to just plug it in and it should work. I got it home, disconnected my old router (a Linksys WRT54G) and plugged it in. After a few minutes, the phone was up and working and sounds good; however, the internet coming off of the router is extremely slow (both wired and wirelessly). So slow that pages won't load. The title bar will tell you where you're trying to go; however the page will not load.
Before calling for help, I contacted my internet provider (Cox Cable in Phoenix) and verified that the network was working and that my modem (Terayon brand) was good. When I hook the modem directly to the computer I get my full connection (around 20 megs down). Then I called T-Mobile and was connected to Linksys since the router was connecting and providing phone service.
I spent an hour on the phone with Linksys. We flashed the firmware to the latest build, reset the modem to factory settings, reset the modem via the button on the back all the while power cycling the whole setup numerous times. The rep had me check some settings on my computer and I was able to ping from the cmd prompt. In the end, she felt that I received a bad router and said I should return it. She never mentioned cloning the MAC address; however, I saw that on the T-Mobile forums and tried it - no luck.
I took the router back to the T-Mobile store and the rep happily exchanged my router for a new one. I got it home, plugged it in and have the same problem. Phone works, internet doesn't pass through the router properly.
I went ahead and flashed the new router and reset it factory settings and that did not help (all the things I did with the Linksys rep with the first router). I'm going to be calling T-Mobile/Linksys again tomorrow but I wanted to see if there was anything anyone in these forums may know what I could try.
With the second router, I did try plugging it into my old router (modem - old router - new router), the phone worked and the internet worked (both wired and wireless); however, the internet is not as quick as going through one router and I do not want to have two routers set up.
Secondly, I looked at the configuration of my old one and set the new one to the same exact settings; however, one setting could not be matched. My old router is set to an operating mode of GATEWAY, the new one is set as ROUTER. The only options on the new one are router and bridge. Could this be the issue?
It was recommend on the T-Mobile forums to run a speed test and post the results, which I can do tonight after I get home from work.
I've searched these forums, Google, the T-Mobile forums, the Cox forums at dslreports.com, and tons of other places and cannot find an answer. Based on the size of Cox, it's hard to believe I'm the only one with this issue. Any help would be appreciated. I have until Sunday to return the router and cancel the service without any termination fees.

Try the following settings on the router...
Change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.462GHz under Wireless tab...Under Advance Wireless Settings,Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304.Under Security tab, uncheck the option "Block Anonymous Internet Requests "...Power Cycle the router and check..

  • Extremely slow internet using wifi.

    Hi guys,
First post here so be gentle.
After a week or so of using Arch I started noticing some strange things happening so far:
    - Pacman's package list downloading from the repos happens at regular speed (around 700Kb/s), then followed by a 30 secs lag between each package download, which starts at normal speed, but then come down to around 2Kb/s then I get an Address Record error, which terminates the download.
    - first ping to google is fine, then any ping after either get a 'host unknown' error or ping takes around 9Kms.
    - another strange behavior that happens when pinging is that the wireless connection start at a bit-rate of 1Mb/s (according to iwconfig), then every time I ping google the bit-rate jumps (1Mb/s -> 12Mb/s -> 24Mb/s -> 54Mb/s -> 81Mb/s).
    - can't load any websites (google takes around 5min to load, most other sites I just get a timed out error)
So my config is as follows:
    - Intel Centerino Ultimate-N 6300
    - connected using NetworkManager (but while connected with wicd the problem still occurs).
    - running gnome 3.
    - the router is Edimax 6524n
So far, I've checked resovle.conf (which only states my router ip address, which is fine because it serves as my DNS server), my hosts file (which is configured according to the tutorial in ArchWiki) and I've disabled the ipv6 module.
I've asked in several forums so far but with not much success, so i'm really hoping someone can solve it for me.
    Thanks in advance!
PS: in one of the forums i asked someone asked me to post the output of dmesg | grep -i iwlagn, so here it is:
    pastebin.com/Pmhi6swv
PS2: This problem does not occur in any of the Windows machines that are connected to the wireless network nor does it happen when this exact machine runs Windows; so the problem is definitely in Linux

I'm kind of having a similar problem. Ever since upgrading to 2.6.39 my wifi is extremely slow. It connects in g mode according to iwconfig and other network analyzing programs. I have iwl3945. The problem is. First it connects to wifi network(which takes about 30secs to successfully complete a connection request) it works great and I'm measuring 25Mbit(which is my internet connection speed) on speedtest.net. But after some minutes my speed drops to around 100KB/s and has a slight fluctuation, not quite constant. Even the upload is bigger than the download speed. If I disconnect the wifi, reload the kernel module and reconnect, then it works again for 1-2 minutes at full speed, then the speed drops again.

Any suggestions, or ideas would be very helpful. Thank you.
btw. I use NetworkManager and kernel 2.6.39

  • Extremely slow Internet over Airport, good speed with Ethernet

I've been using an airport extreme router (802.11n) for a while and recently I've noticed an incredible slow Internet over wifi. When I do a speed test it shows numbers like 200 kbps and I have a 10 mbps cable Internet connection. When I connect the ethernet from the modem it's perfect speed. Obviously Airport is slowing down my Internet connection. I tried resetting the Airport by pressing the reset button at the back, and it worked perfectly for a while. But after a few days it got back to slow Internet. Anybody have any idea?

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but I came across some changes (purely by experimentation) that may help. I hope so, at least...
I opened the Airport Utility and I swapped channels. The default is channel 6, but every other WiFi router defaults to this channel, too. I changed my Airport Extreme to use channel 3 (as well as my Airport Express), and now things are back to what I would have expected for an 802.11g connection.
I will offer the suggestion that those of you with the same Internet slow-down observed on their iMac G5's try swapping channels. If you have an expanded WiFi home network vis-a-vis an Airport Express, be sure to update it first before you update your Airport Extreme.
    Best wishes and good luck!

  • Extremely slow internet conection.

Alright. I returned from holiday yesterday and found that the internet was extremely slow.
In an attempt to correct the problem I have tried a whole host of things, including speaking to a bt technical engineer via online live chat as well as consulting someone on the phone.
    Nothing has worked.
After speaking with my dad who was home, he told me that it has been like this for a week now and he had resetted the routuer once in an attempt to fix the problem. Personally I have reset the router maybe about 5 times today, including trying two other routers, and the problem remains. I've only recently learnt (by reading through these forum pages) that resetting the router is probably the worse thing you can do. That being said, the problem arose before the resets and not after.
After doing a speed test this is the result.
I've read something about waiting 3/5 days for the profile to automatically get up to speed, but that is simply unacceptable. Is there no way for bt to reset the profile at their end?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

your profile has dropped due to problems with your connection.  It may have had numerous resets by the hub itself while you were away and unless the stats are checked on a regular basis you would probably never know it had happened.  however then you started to try and get the speed back by resetting the router and changing for another and each time causing another reset.
this was seen by the exchange as a connection problem and the result was that your noise margin gets increased and you speed drops as the exchange tries to stabilise your connection.  the profile ends up set by the lowest speed during all these resets.
before the profile rises to match your new speed the exchange equipment waits 3/5 days to make sure your line is stable otherwise if your profile rose and there was still a problem it would drop almost immediately.

I have read your post on how your brand new desktop computer is experiencing slow Internet. Are you other wireless devices experiencing a similar issue? Does this occur with more than one browser?
In the meantime, I recommend following the steps in this document on Windows 8 stops responding or becomes very slow after connecting to the Internet. This should help improve the speed of your computer's browsing capabilities.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • Extremely slow internet data downloading

I have 2 other older Macs connected to my LAN both of which access the internet at normal speed. My new Mac mini pings addresses at the same rate as the other Macs but data download speed is extremely slow. Has anybody had this problem?

    Define extremely slow.
    Start with the basics:
    1. System Preferences -> Network -> Network Port Configurations.
Uncheck all the boxes except the method you use to connect to the network (airport checked if you are wireless, or Built-in ethernet if you are wired)
    2. System Preferences - Network -> Airport (or Built-in Ethernet depending on step 1.) -> TCP/IP -> Configure IPv6
    Change selection to OFF
Under DNS (Optional Box) you may wish to manually enter in the IP addresses of your Service Providers DNS servers.
    3. Because you have older Macs with an older selection of LAN hardware to access the internet you may want to see what the speed and duplex settings are on your box (access switch, broadband router, hub) and match those settings on your Built-in Ethernet if you are using that instead of Airport.
    4. If you are wired, switch cables with one of the older Macs.
    That should be a start.
