Extremely slow internet using wifi.

Hi guys,
First post here so be gentle.
After a week or so of using Arch I started noticing some strange things happening so far:
- Pacman's package list downloading from the repos happens at regular speed (around 700Kb/s), then followed by a 30 secs lag between each package download, which starts at normal speed, but then come down to around 2Kb/s then I get an Address Record error, which terminates the download.
- first ping to google is fine, then any ping after either get a 'host unknown' error or ping takes around 9Kms.
- another strange behavior that happens when pinging is that the wireless connection start at a bit-rate of 1Mb/s (according to iwconfig), then every time I ping google the bit-rate jumps (1Mb/s -> 12Mb/s -> 24Mb/s -> 54Mb/s -> 81Mb/s).
- can't load any websites (google takes around 5min to load, most other sites I just get a timed out error)
So my config is as follows:
- Intel Centerino Ultimate-N 6300
- connected using NetworkManager (but while connected with wicd the problem still occurs).
- running gnome 3.
- the router is Edimax 6524n
So far, I've checked resovle.conf (which only states my router ip address, which is fine because it serves as my DNS server), my hosts file (which is configured according to the tutorial in ArchWiki) and I've disabled the ipv6 module.
I've asked in several forums so far but with not much success, so i'm really hoping someone can solve it for me.
Thanks in advance!
PS: in one of the forums i asked someone asked me to post the output of dmesg | grep -i iwlagn, so here it is:
pastebin.com/Pmhi6swv
PS2: This problem does not occur in any of the Windows machines that are connected to the wireless network nor does it happen when this exact machine runs Windows; so the problem is definitely in Linux

I'm kind of having a similar problem. Ever since upgrading to 2.6.39 my wifi is extremely slow. It connects in g mode according to iwconfig and other network analyzing programs. I have iwl3945. The problem is. First it connects to wifi network(which takes about 30secs to successfully complete a connection request) it works great and I'm measuring 25Mbit(which is my internet connection speed) on speedtest.net. But after some minutes my speed drops to around 100KB/s and has a slight fluctuation, not quite constant. Even the upload is bigger than the download speed. If I disconnect the wifi, reload the kernel module and reconnect, then it works again for 1-2 minutes at full speed, then the speed drops again.

Any suggestions, or ideas would be very helpful. Thank you.
btw. I use NetworkManager and kernel 2.6.39
iwconfig output:

  • Extremely slow internet via wifi

    Hi there!
I bought some days ago a MacBook Air (the low end model, 1,6GHz) in the USA. Now, in Italy, I can connect it to my wifi, ADSL belkin modem+ wireless router 802.11.g, but the speed is prohibitively slow! Indeed, I measured it with a simple speedtest (Internetfrog) and it consistently gives me 16 kbps . At the same time, my other computer (Windows PC), measured with the same tool, has a speed of 1,14Mbps, as it used to have...
There must be something wrong with the Mac or the connection!
Since I am new in the family, can somebody out there help me get a smooth landing in the Mac world?
    Many thanks in advance
    AK

I have had the same problem with my wireless lan connection of my brand new macbook.
    The connection was terrrible slow.
For me it works, so perhaps this will work for you, too???
disconnect from your network by turning off AirPort or unplugging your ethernet cable.
trash the following folder (from the global /Library, not your own ~/Library in your home directory): /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
if required: enter your admin password
    restart your pc
turn on your Airport card and enter your network settings
I've found the solution in discussion for macbooks, so here is the original post:

So let me know, if it works for you....

  • Extremely slow Internet over Airport, good speed with Ethernet

I've been using an airport extreme router (802.11n) for a while and recently I've noticed an incredible slow Internet over wifi. When I do a speed test it shows numbers like 200 kbps and I have a 10 mbps cable Internet connection. When I connect the ethernet from the modem it's perfect speed. Obviously Airport is slowing down my Internet connection. I tried resetting the Airport by pressing the reset button at the back, and it worked perfectly for a while. But after a few days it got back to slow Internet. Anybody have any idea?

I don't know if this will help anyone else, but I came across some changes (purely by experimentation) that may help. I hope so, at least...
I opened the Airport Utility and I swapped channels. The default is channel 6, but every other WiFi router defaults to this channel, too. I changed my Airport Extreme to use channel 3 (as well as my Airport Express), and now things are back to what I would have expected for an 802.11g connection.
I will offer the suggestion that those of you with the same Internet slow-down observed on their iMac G5's try swapping channels. If you have an expanded WiFi home network vis-a-vis an Airport Express, be sure to update it first before you update your Airport Extreme.
    Best wishes and good luck!

  • Windows 7 Ultimate (64-Bit) fresh install, only WLAN and video driver installed but EXTREMELY slow internet connection...

I recently checked my internet connection on my Asus G53SW and found that it was extremely slow on both the LAN and WLAN connections. I checked with a different laptop (old HP Pavilion) and I get a steady 74mbps+ connection using the same LAN cable and
also with the WLAN connection. My ISP has checked their side and everything is fine.
To try and resolve the issue I tried uninstalling, disabling and tweaking various software and even tried safe mode with networking, all to no avail. I then decided to do a complete fresh install this afternoon. I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
successfully onto my SSD and everything went smoothly. I have now only installed Nvidia video drivers and the (only) WLAN driver from the Asus support site.
My WLAN connection remains incredibly slow (amost half what it is on the HP and my MacBook Pro). Clearly this is an issue with either the Asus laptop or Windows but I don't know how to proceed in order to eliminate which it could be other than to try a different
    o/s to W7-Ult.
Can anyone help who knows more about this than me? Perhaps someone who has had a similar or the same problem because this is giving me a severe headache!
Thanks in advance to all and for any advice.

    if(null != object) object.Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url); }; </script>

Thank you for responding. As I stated in my original post the reason I went through this process was because of an extremely slow internet connection from both the WLAN and LAN connections on my G53SW. At that time I had all of the correct drivers on the
machine. Whilst I would agree that with the machine only having a video and WLAN driver it may well not be working 'optimally', the rationale for doing this was to get the machine working with the minimum of processes to show that it was not anti-virsu software,
Steam or the like causing interference.
I have changed out both of the HDDs this evening (a primary SSD and a secondary 1Tb HDD) for a clean hybrid 1Tb Seagate drive. Once I have installed all of the Asus drivers (and nothing else) I will try the speed test again and report back.
I can now report that with a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 and ONLY Asus drivers as supplied the issue remains. On a connection where I should see around 75mbps I am actually getting around 18mbps, sometimes considerably slower. This only affects
    my Asus machine.

  • Slow internet via wifi

i'm posting again about the slow airport where the webpages start to load and pause for 10 seconds then continue to load VERY slowly.
i called apple, they said it's my card or the router. i brought it to the store and it worked fine, so i'm assuming it's my router.. but what is wrong with my router?
it works well with everyother computer in the house, even a powerbook.
why is it JUST my MBP that has insanely slow internet via wifi?
    i have a netgear wgr614v3..
should i buy a new router just because my MBP doesn't work good with it?
    thanks!

That is what I ended up doing. Though in my case it was not just my computer but my wifes Toshiba as well. They both have the Atheros based cards. I have seen reports regarding issues with the Atheros cards and certain D-Link, Linksys and Netgear routers though the one I had as a Belkin Pre-N.
The issue I had was in using the WPA security. It worked fine with WEP but had the symptoms you describe with WPA.
I recent replaced it with a Netgear RangeMax WPN824 v2 and they both appear to be working fine so far. My Dell notebook which is not Atheros based had no problems with either router.

    Good day,
I'd like to confirm a few things:
What action/activity are you performing in Acrobat when it crashes?
Is the crash consistent at the same point?
You stated in the subject '..after upgrading to 10.6.7'
What OS was on your iMac when you purchased it?
Was this problem occuring when using an earlier verion of 10.6.x?
Have you applied to font update Apple released to address some of the problems they introduced with 10.6.7?
Did you perform a clean install of Acrobat on your iMac after you purchased it or was the application transferred in some way?
I hope we can get this resolved for you!

  • Extremely slow internet in vista ultimate

been having this problem since i installed windows vista ultimate. i had xp before on my imac 20" 2.4ghz and it worked fine. but since i installed the vista ultimate the internet is extremely slow and it would take an hour to open a webpage, if im lucky.
so far the only solution i have now is to restart the router everytime i switch from osx to vista ultimate. sometimes the internet is so slow i can't even access the router webpage (192.168.0.1). but in the meantime i can access it with my ipod touch no problem.
is anyone else having the same problem?
    hope to get some response.
    thanks a lot!

I encountered very slow network performance with Vista and bootcamp and this is what I found.
I have a DLINK DIR-655 router which I upgraded the firware to 1.10 (which supports 802.11n and some other enhancements). I did this for it seems that Vista was handing my DLINK Router. This router seems to work great on my iMac running Leopard in 802.11n mode.
Next I noted that the Microsoft Broadcom 802.11n wireless driver was being loaded in Vista/Bootcamp. I believe during some of the Windows Update that the older Broadcom driver was loaded.
I reloaded the driver located on the Leopard Install DVD and in the "Drivers" folder and installed the "BroadcomInstaller". This installed the Broadcom driver ver 4.8.75.0 date 1/8/07.
Then in the Driver properties in the Advanced Settings, I did the following
IBSS Mode set to "802.11a/b/g/n Auto"
Rate (802.11b/g) set to "54" vs "Use Best Rate"
This did not set my network to 802.11n but my network performance went from dismal to excellent. I tried playing with the Rate settings but it appeared that the IBSS mode did the trick. Now I can not wait until I can get 802.11n working.
    Hope this helps

    hola,

    help me
    xxx

I have the same problem. Seemed to work okay initially, but after a few months my 11" MBA craws like a PC with a very bad virus or something. It is currently taking FOREVER to download a software update (just hoping probably unrealistically that may do something). Also my trackpad has stopped scrolling up/down or does so only intermittently. Single clicks are unreliable. I have to use an external mouse. I was having the slow speeds before the trackpad died though. Pretty disappointing for a machine a few months old and really only moderately used. My MacBook that's about 4-5 years older is still working great and so much faster on same internet router (a Mac router). Anyone????

  • OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 slow internet via wifi

I'm posting this in the hopes that Apple will fix soon. I have a 27inch iMac late 2012. All was fine with Mavericks. After upgrading to Yosemite my internet is slow via my wifi. Yosemite 10.10.1 did not improve anything. iPad and iPhone 6 maintain normal internet speeds with same wifi. I've tried various solutions that have been posted by others and recommended by Apple support. No improvement. When accessing a page on internet, Safari browser blue line in address field goes about 1/4 of the way across and then pauses...sometimes up to 10 seconds...before continuing and rendering the page. I do not lose wifi connection, as some people report, it's just much slower than it was with Mavericks. Apple, please fix ASAP!!

I have a new MacPro which was purchased with Mavericks and all ran very well. Shortly after "upgrade" to Yosemite my attempts to connect to the internet are as you described but with an ethernet connection. This is not just Safari but also Mail too.
All my other devices ( iPhone 4; iPad 2; old MacPro 1.1 and old macbook ,both with 10.7.5,) will connect to the internet as they should whilst the New MacPro just hangs. However my Macbook Pro which was also purchased with Mavericks and subsequently "upgraded" to Yosemite connects to the internet with no real problems via wifi. Both the New MacPro and Macbook Pro are running through the same network arrangement as are all the other devices mentioned.
I find that when the New MacPro is hanging that if I use my iPhone or iPad to connect to mail for example it seems to kick start the New MacPro and it soon after makes connection.

  • Extremely slow internet and staying connected

I got Verizon internet almost 2 weeks ago. Ever since then it has been nothing but one problem after another. It cuts out so many times a day. I have to reset the modem 20+ times a day. Its very frustrating. I tried talking to customer service about it and they dont do anything, all they say is to go to the troubleshooting page and look around on there. I am ready to cancel because it is getting ridiculous. My modem is the Actiontec GT784 and it has built in Wifi, which cuts out as well. And the speed of the internet and the Wifi is extremely slow when it is connected. SOMEONE HELPPPPP!!!

Bad timing to get FIOS, There's an outage and Verizon doesn't seem to be doing anything.

  • Extremely slow internet on my mac ?

could there be some kind of virus, ghost that would cause this ?
I am saying this because the same internet connection ( wifi) works very well with an other mac ( in wifi as well)
    Thanks

8.8.8.8 is a Google DNS server which will be one of the fastest anywhere in the world - DNS server speed can be checked with NameBench.
You should be aware that each time you change your DNS server your DNS cache gets flushed so don't be surprised if a future DNS server change appears to be better. I arrange for my DNS cache to be automatically flushed at boot. I boot once a day.
I am not a wireless user and was interested in my daughter's recent discovery about her wireless link to her cable modem in Washington:
"When I logged in tonight at 10.00pm I was getting slow speeds again. I looked up in 'about this mac' and saw many  wireless networks, many using the same channel.  I then changed my network preferences to only use 802.1n rather than g or b (largely because most other networks seem to be using g). This then gave me a new set of channels to chose from - I picked one that no-one else used and bingo... my speed is now consistently 50Mbps! At least I now know what to do to fix it. I was probably having the same problem in my old apartment block, but never associated the gradually increasing number of wireless networks with my slowing internet speed."
My UK telephone line restricts me to about a third of this speed - see: http://links.zero.eu.org/radsl/
