Extremely slow Mac after updating to Snow Leopard from Leopard

Hi, I just updated to Snow Leopard from Leopard, and now everything is extremely slow, things keep crashing, freezing etc. What did I do wrong? How do I fix it?

Do this:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Prohibitory icon after upgrading to snow leopoard from leopard

I have done an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard on several iMacs a Mac Book and a Mac Book Pro to prepare for an upgrade to Lion. The install disk installed 10.6.3. I then did software update to upgrade the system to 10.6.8. This went fine on most Macs but on an iMac and the Mac Book Pro I now get the prohibitory icon when I start them up. I can however start them up in Safe Boot mode by holding the Shift key after the start up chime. Some times If I start-up in safe boot then shut down and then do a regular startup the Mac will start up. Then just to be sure things are working I will do a couple of restarts then eventually the prohibitory icon is back. The problem with trying to troubleshoot this is the inconsistent nature of the problem, some iMacs upgraded fine, one did not and the MacBook Pro did not. Sometimes the Macs with the problem will restart, sometimes not.
I have tried several things.
Zapping the PRAM,
Repairing permissions with Disk Utility.
Removing a login item (a LaCie power button utility)
Reinstalling Snow Leopard starting up from the Install disk.
I am now trying to figure out if there is a third party startup item such as a daemon that is causing the problem. I am planning to remove some third party daemons from the folder /System/LaunchDaemons.
Are there any suggestions as to a process to trouble shoot this? Is there a way to see at which daemon triggered the problem? Is there a log file I could look for?
Is there a reason why the problem is not consistent? Could this give me a clue as to where to look?

Yes, the admin is the first account set up on a fresh install
Make a folder for each user on the data drive
Admin
User 1
User 2
User 3
and drag and drop a copy of each of their
Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, (Public and Sites if used)
into it if they have files.
When your ready to set up Snow keep this in mind.
Within the iTunesLibrary file there are pathnames to where the music is located.
For example
file://localhost/Users/hummermacjr/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Music/Enya/A%20day%20without%20rain/03%20only%20time.mp3
When the iTunes music is returned to each users Music folder after you upgrade to Snow you need to match the pathnames so the playlists are preserved.
So you need the same user names and same hard drive name (different passwords if you want) or else there could be location issues, not only in iTunes, but perhaps other files that locate other files and import them.
So in other words you don't want to disturb the order of things as little as possbile.

HT3771 Hi, I cannot get my HP2200dn to work with my Intel macs after updating to Snow Leopard

Since installing Snow Leopard I can only print using my HP Laserjet 2200dn mono laser printer if I print via my old G4 which is running Tiger.
The G4 has the HP printer as a shared printer and is connected using Appletalk.
Obviously this is very inconvenient as the old G4 is not always on!
I have downloaded and installed two lots of Apple printer driver updates, along with the latest version of Gutenprint.
I have tried resetting the printing system, all to no avail.
No matter what I try the printer keeps pausing before doing anything and pauses again within a few seconds of restarting.
I have tried various printer drivers with no effect, including the Gutenprint one.
Any help gratefully received!

Safari and other aplications super slow after update to Snow Leopard. Installed the update combo and nothing happened, still super super slow. Any tips to solve this?

After updating to Snow Leopard (to install Lion later), Safari and other aplications became super super slow and Preview is not working properly, I can't print anything that was opened with Preview. Already installed the Combo update, nothing happened, Safari still taking hours to load any site. I honestly regret downloading Snow Leopard, the older version worked so much better... Hope Lion is smarter than Snow Leopard...

Home sharing does not work after update to snow leopard 10.6.4 and iTunes 9

I am using home sharing since about a year without any problems. After updating to snow leopard 10.6.4 and iTunes 9.2 it suddenly does not work anymore.
On my iMac and my Mac Book Pro I get error code 3259 and it tells me to check my firewall and to enable Port 3689.
I did not change anything in the firewall settings, itunes on both allows data traffic in both directions. I also do not find any option to activate a port ( also wondering why this is suddenly now necessary)
I deactivated home sharing on both machines and enabled it again. It still does not work.
On both machines iTunes displays the the library on the left side but like said it is not accessable
With Finder I can access the other computer from both machines without any problem.
Any help to solve this would be very much appreciated

first of all, if you are behind a router firewall, and have your network secured (WPA2 and a long, non-dictionary password made up of letters and numbers), you don't need the software firewall on your Mac(s).
@ least turned if off for troubleshooting purposes.
turn home sharing off on both computers, and make sure
(a) both Macs have access to the internet
(b) iTunes on both machines is authorized for the same iTunes account.
turn home sharing back on on both Macs.

Ipad won't sync after updating to snow leopard

Any help available regarding a non-syncing ipad first gen, after updating to snow leopard on my imac? The ios software on ipad is up to date, and the snow leopard version is also up to date. The computer will not even recognize that the ipad is connected. Thx.

Try something very simple first. Quit iTunes, reboot the Mac and restart the iPad. Then try again.
I had some issues when I first installed SL on my last MacBook, and I still have issues every now and then with the iPad not being recognized (now running Lion 10.7.3 on a new MacBook Pro) and this has always worked for me. You may have to reboot the Mac a couple of times - but try it and see if it works for you.

Aperture fail after updating to snow leopard

After updating to Snow Leopard, Safari will no longer display any flash content. I have tried reinstalling flash as well as uninstalling/reinstalling. Firefox works correctly so I know I do have the correct flash installed. Any advice? Thanks.

I have a similar problem. The rendering is wrong after updating to Snow Leopard 10.6.
The 10.6.1 doesn't solve the problem.
The rendering problem is on Safari, Firefox and Chrome.
I've tried to uninstall Flash using the Adobe uninstaller and re-install.
It doesn't solve the problem.
On my MacBook Air, I've updated to Snow Leopard, and no problem. Flash is working correctly.

If you install Snow Leopard, make sure during the install to open the Optional install items. You must turn Rosetta on, which is not installed by default (necessary to run older PowerPC apps such as Office 2004). If you miss the installation of Rosetta, it can still be installed after the fact a couple of ways.

Try re-adding your printer in System Preferences/Print & Fax. Not sure what type of printer you have, but if it was old and relying on an Appletalk connection, Snow Leopard dropped that support.

It has never been on the MAS. It's never been a download anywhere (except, maybe, as a pirated version on a torrent, which, along with being "free," will probably bring along some nice malware.) It has always been a DVD, which may be possible to obtain by calling Apple and asking for Phone Sales. Should stlll only be $29.

ITunes library updates are extremely slow (10 sec/update)

Hi All,
Since a week or two i'm experiencing extremely slow iTunes library updates. Adding a song, or skipping to the next song (which updates id3 info), causes iTunes to wait for 10 seconds. This is very frustrating when skipping trough a selection of 700 new songs. Costs me 2 hours extra to check the songs...
My system is okay; nothing out of the ordinary; it has been running like this for years now. Suddenly iTunes stopped being cooperative. Is there somebody that can help me out here?

Not plenty at all. In fact, very dangerously low on free space.
As a general rule, you should have at least 10%-15% free space on the boot drive for the OS to operate correctly. This is needed for swap files and for the OS to move files around correctly.
I recommend you immediately delete at least 45GB of old files from your boot drive. If not, it's simply a matter of time before you HD crashes and you lose everything.
