Extremely Slow Network Performance with 10.5.8

Let me start off by saying I don't use my mac mini much at all but when I do, the network is incredibly slow and unbearable. Half of the pages don't load, ipsw files for the iPhone take 20-30 minutes (with 15mbps interwebs)
My network setup:
1. Modem (provided by ISP)
2. 2 TB Time Capsule WPA2 security default settings.
3. Airport Connection
Now I would be for using 'openDNS' for a resolution but it didn't really improve the issue. Sure it sped up the internet on that machine, but I'm not willing to use a third party DNS when my MacbookPro connecting to the same exact network, doesn't experience this.
I have removed the hosts file for airport, remove the network connection, reset SMC, to no avail.
If anybody has any insight as to why my mac mini is the only device with poor performance, that would be greatly appreciated.

I shouldn't have to use another user.
Okay. It should also work with your current user but it's not.
For testing purposes and to narrow down the problem, try another user and see if it works.
If it works, it is something with the current user.
If it doesn't work, it is something with the system.

  • Very slow network performance - with uploads faster than downloads

I just got new ISP - 100 mbps through a Cat5 line. It checks out when I run ethernet directly to a computer. However, I want a totally wireless network.
I have a Time Capsule attached by ethernet and that is my main network device. I also have two airport Xpress' to extend the network.
I am getting, on average, 16 mbps! And, upload speed is generally higher.
The Time Capsule is about 2 yrs old, but it is an "n" device.
Anybody have any idea what the problem might be? I was considering getting a new extreme and using the Time Capsule as an extender instead of the expresses because, as I understand it, the express has one band only. Would that be better? Mainly, I want to get the speed up to what it should be.
Is there some way to trouble shoot the Time Capsule?
Others in my building with D Link or Linksys routers are getting over 80 mbps wirelessly, so I know it is possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to stay with Apple products, but if not possible I will get another brand of router.
    Thanks,
    Deanna

So, William, I got an Airport Extreme. Within 20 or so feet of it I am now getting 85 to 95 Mbps!
    Great!
However, in the far reaches of the house, signal is low and I have not been able to extent network with either the Time Capsule or an Airport Express. They just won't connect.
Based on the earlier numbers you gave me, you won't be able to establish a reliable connection "in the far reaches of the house", as it's too far away from the base router. You'll either have to (1) run Ethernet to that remote unit, (2) use PowerLine units as an Ethernet extender, or (3) put the remote unit closer to the base unit.
I reset the Time Capsule a couple of times. I noticed that both devices are automatically set to channel 157.
That's a 5 GHz channel. That band can give faster throughput, but the signal strength falls off faster than in the 2.4 GHz band.
The Extreme has 2 channels - 2 and 157. I do not have the option of changing the channel on either of the other devices.
That makes sense, if they're configured to extend an existing network. They must communicate on the same channel as the base station they're extending.

  • Very slow network performance with Intel NIC when TCP Large Send Offload is enabled

I have a Windows 2008 server with two NIC's (Intel PRO/1000 PL and Intel PRO/1000 PM), and one virtual external switch connected to each NIC.
With the 01/14/08 network driver, I get very low throughput on both NIC's (~10KB/sec when downloading from my server when it should be around 11MB/sec).
I've found that disabling "TCP Large Send Offload (IPv4)" on the virtual switch and "Large Send Offload v2 (IPv4)" on the physical adapters solves the problem.
Is this a bug in the driver?
    Thank you,
    Ricardo Costa

2 years later, I was able to get that machine to work with Hyper-V under Windows Server 2008 R2, but only after disabling everything that had anything to do with TCP or IP offloading.  I think that I had to turn off 4 settings on one controller,
and 5 settings on the other controller.  Once that was done, everything worked flawlessly.  It is very apparent that the Virtual Controllers do not properly use many of the features of non-Intel devices (not all Intel devices work either), and
that Hyper-V does not completely uninstall if you remove it.
If you have any problems, start turning off the features that your adapter supports, until it starts working.  You'll need to weight the cost of replacing the controller with a fully supported controller, of which there is no list, or using your existing
controller at a capacity lower than it physically supports.  This has been an elusive issue with Microsoft's Virtual Server projects since they were first in beta, so don't expect a fix anytime soon.
P.S. For those who don't know, the settings are on the actual device and can be changed in the Device Manager.  If you are still having trouble after turning off all the settings, then you will need to replace the controller(s) with a different
    make/model.

Firefox 4 is extremely slow to perform any function on my lap top compared to previous versions. Why? And how do I change this!

Firefox 21 and Firefox 22 running on Windows 7 have been reported to take a long time to "wake up" from sleep. I realize hibernation is different than sleep, but... this is the closest match for your description.
Some users have reported that this problem is resolved in Firefox 23 (currently in beta). Others have had inconsistent luck with minimizing Firefox before letting Windows sleep and other measures.
Please check out this (very long) thread for more information: [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/961898 browser freezes after resuming from sleep]
Or jump to the part about Firefox 23: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/961898?page=3#answer-457321
The fact that this just started recently suggests perhaps it is related to another program or update, but I don't think anyone has confirmed the exact interaction that causes the problem.

    ### Complete Problem Description ###
A test file is being used to do inserts into a schemaless XML DB. The file is inserted and then links are made to 4
different collection folders under /public. The inserts are pretty slow (about
15 per second and the file is small)but the xquery doesn't even complete when
there are 500 documents to query against.
The same xquery has been tested on a competitors system and it has lightening fast performance there. I know it
should likewise be fast on Oracle, but I haven't been able to figure out what
is going on except that I suspect somehow a cartesian product is the result of
    the query on Oracle.

  • Extremely slow wireless printing with HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m

I'm seeing extremely slow print speeds when printing wirelessly from a Mac or a Windows XP system to a new HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m printer. The printer begins printing immediately when I request a print, but it only prints one line. It will then take about 15 minutes to print the rest of the page, printing each line after a very long pause. Demo page printing doesn't exhibit this problem, only documents from programs like Word 2008, Safari and Firefox (tried firefox on PC and Mac) are affected.
If I connect to the printer through a USB connection it prints fine, so this problem appears to be with wireless printing only.
    Printer: HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m
Computer: Mac mini (Late 2009 model) (also tried a Windows XP laptop as a comparison, using latest drivers from HP's website)
OS: Mac OS X 10.6.2 with all available updates installed
Computer connection method: Wired Ethernet connection to wireless router
Printer drivers: version 2.2.1 (Apple supplied, HP drivers never installed as system shipped with 10.6)
Wireless router: Apple TimeCapsule (Early 2009) 1TB, running in a/n and b/g modes on 2.4 and 5GHz. TimeCapsule is in bridging mode as the DSL modem handles DHCP service
Encryption: WPA2 Personal, no MAC filtering or hiding of the SSID.
IP addressing scheme: All addresses are handed out by DHCP server with no reservations of any kind
The TimeCapsule is sitting three inches from the printer and the printer indicates full signal. Connection of the printer to the wireless network and setup of the printer on the Mac went without a hitch. Only when printing a test document did we discover the problem. The wireless network is behaving as expected when accessing the Internet from both Mac and Windows devices (tested with a Dell laptop running XP and a MacBook running OS X 10.6.2), so I don't see any overall problems with the wireless network.
    Attempted remedies:
    1. Rebooting and powering off, waiting, powering on computer
    2. Resetting the print subsystem, turning the printer off and on again and reinstalling the printer
    3. Unplugging power from the printer and letting it sit for several minutes before trying to print wirelessly.
    None of these worked.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I don't think there is anything wrong with the DSL modem HW.  There might be an issue with how print data is being routed though.
Please try the second experiment where you blank-out the default gateway and DNS entries from the printer's internal web configuration page.  Open the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address.  Select Networking and then Wireless (802.11).  Under the IPv4 Configuration tab, select Manual IP:
For Manual IP Address, use the existing printer IP address.
For Manual Subnet Mask, use 255.255.255.0
For Manual Default Gateway, leave blank.  This is important.
    Select Manual DNS Server:
Leave both the Manual Preferred DNS Server and Manual Alternate DNS Server fields empty.  This is important.
    Press Apply.
Turn off the DSL modem, the printer and all computers connected to your network.  Wait 60 seconds then turn on the DSL modem and then turn on the printer.  Then turn on the computers.  See if this corrects the printing speed.

  • Extremly poor network performance

Hello all. First time post, please excuse any annoyances.
I'm using a WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router connecting three (sometimes four) computers. Two wired and one (sometimes two) wireless, using 802.11G.
After a long period of time or after a short period of extremely high use (usually bit-torrenting assorted files) my network performance crawls to a near stop. My laptop will show an "excellent" connection but the speed will be 1 Mbps. The wired computers still show a connection of 100 Mbps but cannot connect to anything, including the router (using the web configure site). All connections time out. This happens to all the computers connected at the time and the only cure I've found thus far is to restart the router and or modem. If you need any more information please ask. Below is the information of my router, computers hooked to the router, and the network connection coming in.
    Connection coming in the house:
Comcast Cable. 6 Meg connection (download)
    Router:
    WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router
    Using the latest firmware (0.93.3)
Using DHCP, Laptop1 and Desktop1 have reservations.
    Laptop1:
Broadcom internal wireless 'card' running 802.11G
    Desktop 1:
    Intel NIC
    Desktop 2:
    Asus motherboard onboard NIC
    (occasional) Laptop2:
Dell external wireless card running 802.11G

I must apologize for one annoyance... the whole post. I skipped step one of posting by forgetting to use that handy-dandy "Search" box located just above this whole post deal, I apologize again. I've found (after searching) that this problem is actually quite common with the 300N and I assume it's a firmware issue, I then assume that Linksys is working day and night, sweating behind a monitor, sleepless and hungry because all they are doing is trying to resolve this issue... then again... you know what they say about 'assuming''.

  • T520 - 42435gg / Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance with Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver

    Hi everybody,
I have serious Problems with my 42435gg
Any time I install the Intel Storage AHCI Driver (I've tried plenty of different versions) which is suggested by System Update I experience a horrible Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance in Windows 7 64-Bit.
The funny thing in this case: If the external e-sata port is connected the problems do not occur. If the port is unused again, the stutter begins immediately.
The only thing I can do is using the Windows internal Storage Driver with which I am not able to use my DVD recorder for example.
The device was sent to lenovo for hardware testing with no result. It was sent back without any repairing.
    Anybody experience on this?
    Kind regards,
    Daniel

  • Slow Network Speed with MacPro

I just received 4 MacPro's with the dual quad processors. I have configured 3 for our workplace and have moved them into production. We are experiencing very slow network speeds, a test file on our server of 100mb takes 2 minutes 20 seconds to copy to the desktop. I have manually set the ethernet port to 100baseT with full duplo. The old machine is running the same OS 10.4.10, and only takes 12 seconds to copy the file. I should mention that we use DAVE to connect to our servers, both machines are running the same version of DAVE, and using a third machine I connected to both drops and the file copied in 12 sec, showing that the network is physically OK. The only difference between the two machines is that one is the intel version? Can anyone offer any thing to try?
    Thanks

I am 99% sure someone else had 'slow transfer' in another thread.
Sometimes a router needs firmware update to be compatible, or upgrade the cables to cat6e, or look for a new router or switch which helped my own setup. Just look for one that says that it is "Vista compatible" actually.

  • Anyone else notice slower network performance since Apple TV 3 update?

Ever since I updated the ATV to the 3 software, my download and "ready to play" times have increased dramatically. Several of the rented HD movies also stalled during playback, something that never happened with the Take 2 software. Noticing no network problems with other connected devices. I connect via Qwest DSL 8Mbit service via an Apple Airport dual band N router (late 2008). Anyone else see this slowdown?
    Steve in Spokane

    I'm running:
    - Mac Mini running iTunes sharing a library with my AppleTV
    - AppleTV running 3.0.1
    - Time Capsule running the wireless network
Since the last update I've been having significant streaming problems between my iTunes library and the AppleTV. Streaming video was stopping every minute or two, downloading from iTunes Store was very slow, and even basic music streaming was stuttering regularly.
Looking at my Airport Utility client connectivity graph, I noticed that the AppleTV connection was plotting a significantly different line to my other wireless clients on the Time Capsule. Sorry, I'm not a Wireless expert, so won't try to diagnose this graph.
So I tried different wireless channels. I tried removing wireless clients. I tried rebooting all individual components. Nothing changed.
So I plugged in my Airport Express and swapped my AppleTV to a wired connection to the Airport Express operating as a wireless client in a WDS network from my Time Capsule.
Everything now works just fine. No stuttering, not dropouts, fast speeds.
My suggestion is that in the latest software for AppleTV, Apple have broken the Wireless code.

  • Very Slow SMB Performance with DroboShare

    Hi there,
We have a big issue with a DroboShare NAS device connected to a Drobo Drive (FAT32):
If we connect to our DroboShare NAS directly via LAN, the performance with SMB is terrible. Browsing folders takes minutes until the contents (15 items) are shown, opening and saving files takes minutes.
If we connect the Drobo via USB to one of our Macs and then share it via SMB, it is fast as ****.
Problem is that we cannot leave it this way, as we only have portable macs, so if they are removed, nobody can access the Drobo.
The problem nevertheless seems to be restricted to Macs: If we connect to the DroboShare with Linux or Windows Boxes, everything is as fast as expected.
Does anyone has similar issues with weak performance and/or knows how this can improved?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Simon

I just ported netatalk (AFP) over to the DroboShare.

  • Very poor network performance with a G4

I have a white & grey G4 (1.25GHz and 256MB) running OS X 10.4.5. It's exhibiting very poor network performance, e.g. it will not FTP files over a LAN at more than about 40KB/second.
Other nodes on the same switch perform fine, as do other ports on the switch. The machine is set to autodetect for speed & duplex, so my question is -- how do I debug this? I've tried swapping network cables already...
    Thanks!
    Chris

This came down to an incompatibility between the G4 and the Cisco. When the switch is set to force 100Mbit but negotiate duplex, the G4 doesn't like it. Going back to auto speed & duplex fixed the problem...

  • Extremely Slow Wireless Performance on an Extended Network

    Hi
My network setup consists of a Time Capsule (early 2009) wireless network that is being extended by an AirPort Extreme (early 2007) which has an Xbox 360 connected to it via ethernet.
    1) Everything seems fine on the MacBook Pro (wireless N) when connected to the Time Capsule and I can get the full speed of my broadband connection (8Mbit). However, when the MacBook Pro connects to the AirPort Extreme, in another room, my broadband speed drops to around 2Mbit, however the transfer rate usually remains unchanged (between 78 and 130).
I know it has nothing to do with the positioning of the base stations, as when I turn off the AirPort Extreme, the MacBook Pro, in the same room, has the full internet speed.
This is really annoying as I rely on my Xbox 360 for heavy video streaming and content downloads.
    2) When the Xbox 360 is downloading something, any internet served by the AirPort Extreme becomes totally unusable and dead.
    3) Additionally, the AirPort Extreme sometimes insists on extending the 5Ghz network from the Time Capsule which only provides a rate of around 10.
    Please help me!
    Thanks

To insure that your AirPort Extreme is extending the 2.4 GHz band from your Time Capsule:
Open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
    Click the Wireless Options button
Assign a separate name for your 5 GHz network. (By default, AirPort Utility will automatically add "5 GHz" to your network name.)
Click Update to save your changes
Then check to make sure that your AirPort Extreme is setup to extend the 2.4 GHz band from the Time Capsule, not the "5 GHz" network.
If you perform a Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule, it will not affect your stored backups on the Time Capsule disk.
