Extremely slow performance on projects under version control using RoboHelp 11, PushOk, Tortoise SVN repository

We are also experiencing extremely slow performance for RoboHelp projects under version control. We are using RoboHelp 11, PushOk and a Tortoise SVN repository on a Linux server. We are using a Linux server on our IT guys advice because we found SVN version control under Windows was unstable.
When placing a Robohelp project under version control, and yes the project is on my local machine, it can take up to two hours to complete. We are using the RoboHelp sample projects to test.
We have tried to put the project under version control from Robohelp, and also tried first putting the project under version control from Tortoise SVN, and then trying to open the project from version control in Robohelp. In both cases, the project takes a ridiculous amount of time to open. The Robohelp status bar displays Querying Version Control Status for about an hour before it starts to download from the repository, which then takes more than an hour to complete. In many cases Robohelp becomes unresponsive and we have to start the whole process again.
If adding the project to source control completes successfully, and the the project is opened from version control, performing any function also takes a very long time, such as creating a topic. When I generated a printed documentation layout it took an astonishing 218 minutes and 17 seconds to complete. Interestingly, when I generated the printed documentation layout again, it took 1 min and 34 seconds. However when I closed the project, opened from version control, and tried to generate a printed documentation layout, it again took several hours to complete. The IT guys are at a loss, and say it is not a network issue and I am starting to agree that this is a RoboHelp issue.
I see there are a few other discussions here related to this kind of poor performance, none of which seem to been answered satisfactorily. For example:
Why does it take so long when adding a new topic in RH10 with PushOK SVN
Does anybody have any ideas on what we can do or what we can investigate? I know that there are options for version control, but am reluctant to pursue them until I am satisfied that our current issues cannot be resolved.
Thanks Mark

Do other applications work fine with the source control repository? The reason I'm asking is because you must first rule out that there are external factors causing this behaviour. It seems that your it guys have already looked at it, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
I have used both VSS and TFS and I haven't encountered such a performance issue. I would suggest filing it as a bug if you rule out that the problem is not related to external influences: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform&loc=en

  • How do you create translated versions of a project under version control?

    Hi,
We have a project under version control that has been translated. How do we best create projects for the translated material so that the webhelp output matches the English version only translated? Is it possible to create a project with a name that reflects the translated language, copy the English project file to the new folder, change the name to coincide with the translated version, import all of the associated English files, and then exchange all of the English files with the translated ones?
    Thanks,
    Allen

Hello Allen and welcome to the community.
See if this article helps.  You didn't mention which RH version you're using, but except for the features specifically called out as being in RH8, the process should work for RH7 projects.
I use Subversion for version control, and I haven't had any additional challenges from having localized projects in version control—you check the files in and out as you do the English ones. Check out the article and let us know if you have any additional questions.
Note that the article gives recommendations, but you certainly can do your localized versions as completely separate projects.  If you do it that way, for each separate project, copy the English project to a new location, rename it if you want, and change the project language.
    Hope this helps,
    Ben

  • Opening a project from version control

    RH11 | WebHelp
This may be related to my previous post (File Status "New version available") but I am now unable to open a project from version control using the padlock button in RoboHelp's Open Project dialog box. It lets me select a project to open, but then just sits there, not doing anything.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Jonathan

This sounds like a bug to me. Does the RH11 work on a Windows 7 machine? If you have a VMWare lying around, you may want to give that a shot. Short of contacting Adobe with a bug report, I'm out of idea's.
    Kind regards,
    Willam

  • How to clone a project that is under version control?

    [RH10]
Hello. I have a large project that is under TFS source control. I would like some advice on how to safely clone a copy of this project to a separate location (not under source control).
In the past I ran into problems when copying a project under source control. I think I need to somehow unlink the project from TFS before copying it, but I am hesitant to do this without some expert guidance. Can anyone walk me through the steps for doing this safely? (By safely, I mean without altering in any way the state of the production files under source control.)
    Thanks,
    Mike

An olden golden from Rick: http://www.robowizard.com/RoboWizard/MonthlyScry/102004.htm
Just create a copy somewhere and follow the steps outlined by Rick. This article applies to all versions of RoboHelp, no matter the source control system used.

  • Extremely slow performance with Radeon HD 7870

    Hi,
I am using a number of Adobe programs on my new Windows 8 64 bit system, with 16 gigs of ram, an Intel Core i5 2.67ghz, and AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 gig. All the programs (including After Effects and Illustrator) work very well with the exception of Photoshop CS6 64 bit, which has extremely slow performance with Use Graphics Processor enabled in my preferences (which Photoshop selects by default). If I turn off Use Graphics Processor, the slow performance vanishes. If I change Drawing Mode to Basic, there might be a slightly detectable improvement over Normal and Advanced, but it's still horribly slow. The refresh rate seems to be just a few frames per second. Everything is slow: brushes, zooming, panning, everything.
I've tried changing the settings I've seen suggested elsewhere: I switched Cache levels to 2, history states to 10, and tile size to 128k. No effect. Photoshop is currently at the default of using 60% of available ram. Efficiency has remained at 100% throughout all my tests. Also, this slow performance has affected me from the moment I installed Photoshop; it didn't crop up after previous good performance. The problem exists regardless of the size or number of documents I have open. Performance is still terrible even when I create a 500 x 500 pixel blank new canvas and try a simple task like drawing with the brush.
Photoshop is fully up to date, and so are my graphics drivers (Catalyst version 13.1). Any help would be greatly appreciated; at the moment performance is so bad in Photoshop that it's unusable with graphics acceleration enabled. Thanks in advance for replying.

    Great news!
I followed your suggestion, Noel, and uninstalled my drivers with the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (which I hadn't used before), rebooted, reinstalled Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7, rebooted, deleted the PS Prefs, started PS, and now the performance is radically improved!
It baffles me why I would need to do a clean driver uninstall in a new system environment that has only ever had this video card, and is only a few months old, but that action seems to be what's improved the situation. Note that because I deleted the PS preferences, the good performance now occurs with the default Use Graphics Processor enabled, and Drawing Mode set to Advanced (with every feature in the Advanced dialog checked except 30bit display).
Having no reference point, I can't tell for sure if performance is as good as it theoretically ought to be for my system specs, but using the standard 13px brush is only slightly laggy behind the cursor, even if I become reckless and squiggle on the canvas violently. It wasn't just sluggish response before: Photoshop seemed to be in pain trying to draw the line segments as it laboured to catch up to the cursor. That is pretty much gone now.
Much more tellingly, zooming and panning the canvas is like it ought to be, responsive and clean, more or less like it was for me in CS4 with my old Nvidia 9600GT. The poor performance with zooming and panning was the most worrying aspect of the issue. It's a great relief to see these working more properly now.
I have to confess I'm a little embarrassed to have drug you through all this hassle only to discover that something as rudimentary as properly cleaning out the drivers would be the apparent solution. I never would have imagined that doing that, with such a new and stable system, would make any difference, since I don't have a legacy of older drivers dotting my hard drive. In any event, I'm really grateful that you guys took the time to try to help me.
In the interest of completeness, here's the relevant portion of my system info after doing the reinstall steps I mentioned above:

As you can see, the Microsoft Basic Render Driver still appears as a Video Card in the list. This presumably has something to do with Windows 8, and I really don't know if its presence here is still a sign that my card is not being used to its optimal capability. I have a hunch that the slight lag that I am still experiencing with the brush when Use Graphics Processor is on -- totally absent with the acceleration turned off -- implies that Photoshop is still unable to take maximum advantage of my card. I would assume that the brush tool should be more responsive with acceleration on than off, in a rig without any issues, but that's just assumption on my part. If you turn off Use Graphics Processor on your systems, is the brush tool more or less responsive?
But again, panning the canvas with the hand tool is now extremely responsive, without any screen tearing or visible lag, and that's a massive improvement over the total meltdown of performance I was suffering from before.
Thanks again very much for your help. I'm grateful to all of you who took the time to chime in.

  • OpenScript: Which files to put under Version Control?

    Hi,
According to JB's description of [how to enable Subversion|https://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=10677356] for OpenScript, I have now an active version control.
The next question is now: which files I should put under version control? Obviously, the script.java is a good decision, but there are many more, such as java, properties, but also specific folders like "recorded data" and "results" folder.
Which once I should put under version control, any recommendation?
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Volker

    Thanks for your replies,
it's nice to know that I was going the right way.. :)
But how do you handle these little bugs, that I mentioned in my first message? Do you check-out all files in the project before work? Or they are TeamSystem - specific?
    Best wishes, Serg.

  • Airport Express and USB Hard drive and extremely slow performance

    HI Guys,
I seem to having a lot of trouble with an Airport express and a Lacie 1TB drive. While I have solved several problems by updating firmware and enabling journalling on the Lacie, I am still having problems with extremely slow performance with my macbook, particularly using itunes and Firefox.
Any ideas and any further information needed?

    HI,
I formatted it using the Lacie setup program for Mac and later enabled it for journalling using Disk utility. This seemed to solve a lot of the recognition problems I was having, however the I-Tunes and firefox performance is still atrocious. If I do Need to completely reformat it using Disk Utility, will I lose my files on the disk now?
not if you move them to a temporary location before you start.
yes, you are better of formatting the drive with DU.

  • Blackberry Z10 became extremely slow after OS update to version 10.3.1.2243

    Hi,
My Blackberry Z10 became extremely slow after OS update to version 10.3.1.2243. For example it sends text message 10-15 seconds after send button has been hit.
Can not answer the phone when a caller is calling (answer slide interface is unrespnsovie), if I want to launch any application screen turns black and nothing happens, etc.
    Does anyone experience similar issues?
    Thank you.
    Michal.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
A quick read of this site will answer your final question quite clearly. The "fix" depends on several factors, but given what you describe I recommend you immediately update, via AutoLoader, to the most recent version (.2582)...some of the prior versions contain some particularly challenging issues, which are reported to be fixed in this version.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Placing ~ under version control : ignore mask

    Hi.
I am thinking of placing my home directory under version control.
I understand there are threads in Arch and URLs on placing home under version control.
But i find placing everything in ~ will be a waste of space since files such as
web browser cache or icons changes constantly.
I would like to know what does my fellow Archers ~ .ignore files contains?
Any DVCS .ignore files are welcome.

steveklabnik wrote:This seems to be a decent guide to how one guy uses SVN.
Yes, it's a useful guide, but it doesn't discuss the "which files to ignore" part.
I'm running my ~ in svn for already a while now, originally based on the ideas of the above article and some others.
And let me tell you: there are many, many applications who are not consistent, dump cachefiles etc in folders in your ~, or also store things like "last opened, last window size, last status on msn (pidgin)" into your *config* files etc.   many applications seem to honor freedesktop's xdg specs on first sight, but in reality it's seldomly the way it should be.
It's very hard to handle this, I have many ignore rules and I regulary do a `svn status ~` to update my ignore rules. I also have a script that svn reverts some known files.
For me this list currently is:
    ~/.common/.mplayer/* \
            ~/.common/xdg/.config/vlc/* \
            ~/.common/.purple-private/logs/msn/*/.system/ \
            ~/.common/xdg/.config/banshee-1 \
            ~/.common/xdg/.config/totem \
            ~/.gconf/apps/banshee-1 \
            ~/.gconf/apps/brasero \
            ~/.gconf/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/%gconf.xml \
            ~/.gconf/apps/evolution \
            ~/.gconf/apps/file-roller \

            ~/.gconf/apps/miro \

            ~/.gconf/apps/panel/applets/clock_screen0/prefs/%gconf.xml \
            ~/.gconf/apps/nautilus/preferences/%gconf.xml \
            ~/.gconf/apps/rhythmbox \
            ~/.gconf/apps/totem \
            ~/.gconf/apps/update-manager/%gconf.xml \
            ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/font_rendering/%gconf.xml \
            ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/ \
            ~/.gnome2/evince/ev-metadata.xml \
            ~/.gnome2/gedit-2 \
            ~/.gnome2/rhythmbox
When I used gnome this list was MUCH longer.  I am still in the process of getting rid of apps that misbehave badly (biggest offenders are gnome, gnome-do, tomboy, pidgin and for firefox and thunderbird I would even make a separate category: those directories are just filled with many (binary) files, impossible to manage.  I use separate rsync "repositories" for those)

You can build up a similar list like this:
    svn create a-place-for-your-home-in-svn
    svn checkout a-place-for-your-home-in-svn ~
then do svn status ~, and you'll see lots of stuff. then go over everything and decide if you want it in svn or not. by adding it (non-recursively) or updating your ignore rules. that's how I am still building up my list.. all because of those damn programs who don't implement xdg cleanly

  • My macbook is experiencing an extremely slow performance. Everytime I try to do something, the screen will freeze and the pinwheel symbol would appear. How do I pix this?

My macbook is experiencing an extremely slow performance. Everytime i try to do something, the pinwheel symbol will pop up. I do not have an antivirus software until recently, which I got free from school and it said my mac has a virus, which has been quaratined. Unfortunately the problem still persist. Help?

    kasturi pryanka,
your current slow performance might have been caused by installing that antivirus software. Have you tried disabling it, to see if that make a difference with its performance?

  • Version Control in RoboHelp 9: Changing projects

I am using Robohelp version 9. We had originally set up the internal Version Control to point to a particular project in our Team Forge. Now we have a new project that we need to point to and we cannot figure out how to change the location of where we are checking files into. We can see the path in the Version Control properties dialog box, but no way to edit the path. Any suggestions on how to switch from one project in Team Forge to another?
    Thanks!

    I am a dope! I meant Version 8!!!

  • Extremely slow performance transferring data over USB with Time Capsule

I have the 2TB wireless Time Capsule. I have it setup as an extension to my current WiFi at home, since I already had a WLAN router. I have an external harddrive (500gig) that I connected to my Time Capsule because I wanted to transfer data from the Time Capsule to the external HD. The external HD is formatted with FAT32 file system, so read/write is no problem.
When, using my MacBook Pro, I navigated to the Time Capsule and dragged files over to the connected USB harddrive (connected directly in the Time Capsule), the performance to transfer is extremely SLOW! It was slower than doing the transfer completely wirelessly (USB drive connected to laptop and transfer wirelessly from TC)!
I do not understand this at all! It should be a simple transfer using the USB connection! When I do a transfer from my laptop directly to the USB harddrive, with it connected directly to the laptop, the transfers are super fast!
What happened? Can someone please explain this or tell me what I need to do?
    Thank you!

    I am still confused here.
My original question was regarding the use of my USB external harddrive. It was connected to the back of the TC. The TC was wirelessly speaking to my WLAN router. Using my laptop (also wirelessly speaking to WLAN router), I navigated to the TC and saw 2 listings - one for the data on the harddrive in the TC and one for the new external USB drive connected to the back of the TC. I wanted to transfer data from the harddrive in the TC to the USB external drive. Based on what I expected, I thought the transfer rate would merely be limited by the USB 2.0 interface that is being used by the external drive. However, I was definitely wrong! The transfer rate (shown by the estimate in time to transfer the data by my MacBook Pro) was doubled to 14 hrs.
Originally, it was only 7 hrs when the USB external drive is connected directly to my laptop and I connect to the TC wirelessly. Weird!
So why doesn't the TC simply transfer the data from its internal harddrive to the external USB drive directly without using any wireless technology?
The second question I have is regarding the setup of the TC itself. I have a NetGear WLAN router and its an "n" router. So the speed is good. I have my TC currently downstairs from the WLAN router. Therefore the TC is setup as simply a wireless harddrive. It speaks through the WLAN router in order to be available to all my laptops in my house. My question is whether it should instead be directly connected to the WLAN router using an ethernet cable? Would this improve my overall transfer rates to/from the TC?
    Thanks so much.

  • Extremely slow performance with ojdbc6.jar on IBM JVMs (Java 6)

We are consistently seeing slow performance (easily demonstrable by the simplest of test cases) while using ojdbc6.jar on IBM JDKs. Pefrormance is normal when we simply opt for ojdbc14.jar under the same JDK, same java program.
    Works well
    =======
    JRockit, ojdbc6.jar
    JRockit, ojdbc14.jar
    IBM JDK, ojdbc14.jar
    A lot slower
    =======
    IBM JDK, ojdbc6.jar
All we had to do was to write a simple JDBC access program and measure time taken around
    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(jdbcURL, dbProps);
The first 3 combinations mentioned above return comparable numbers. The 4th combination takes 3-4 times as much.
We initially saw this during performance test of our software on WebSphere (also supported on Weblogic). Later was able to eliminate WebSphere and Weblogic as the problem areas and narrow it down to the JVM. Reproduce-able on development machines.
We have been using Oracle/WLS since BEA used to market 'Tengah' servers. This is the worst we have seen as far as the qaulity of support staff goes. We first level support seems clueless. We filed this case and the support comes back tells us that IBM JDKs are not supported for WLS! Oh, we have been running WLS/AIX/IBM JVM combination only for 5+ years.

A quick solution to test this would be to do the following:
    mv /dev/random /dev/random.bk
    ln /dev/urandom /dev/random
Note: The quick solution will disappear after a reboot. You could add it to rc.local to automatically make this change, but I wouldn't recommend it.
    The following is from [http://www.usn-it.de/index.php/2009/02/20/oracle-11g-jdbc-driver-hangs-blocked-by-devrandom-entropy-pool-empty/]:
"Oracle 11g JDBC driver hangs blocked by /dev/random – entropy pool empty
On a headless (=without console) network server, the 11g JDBC driver used for (java) application connect may cause trouble. In my case, it refused to connect to the DB without any error, trace or log entry. It simply hung. After several hours, it connected one time, and freezed again. Remote debugging done by the development clarified that it locks after calling SeedGenerator() and SecureRandom().
Reason: The JDBC 11g needs about 40 bytes of secure random numbers, gathered from /dev/random, to encrypt its connect string.
But public-available “man 4 random” says:
When read, the /dev/random device will only return random bytes within the estimated number of bits of noise in the entropy pool. /dev/random should be suitable for uses that need very high quality randomness such as one-time pad or key generation. When the entropy pool is empty, reads from /dev/random will block until additional environmental noise is gathered.
So far so good, now the question arises: Why does this mystic “entropy pool” runs out of gas?
The answer is as simple as unsatisfying: because too less entropy “noise” was generated by the system. You can check the “filling level” (maybe zero?) of your pool and the overall size of the pool (usually 4096) by issuing
    cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail
    cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/poolsize
Hint: /dev/random will deliver one new random number as soon as the pool has reached more than 64 entropy units.
So why does my box not generate more entropy noise?
Because only few drivers will fill the entropy pool, first of all keyboard and mouse. Sounds very useful on a server in a datacenter, isn’t it? Some block device and network drivers seem to do so as well, and I have read from guys on the net changing their network card and driver to enjoy this “feature”! But let’s stop ranting, /dev/random is simply made for high security randomness, and if it can’t make sure that randomness is as good as possible in this deterministic world, it stops. Intelligent people have created /dev/urandom for that, like “man 4 random” clearly states:
A read from the /dev/urandom device will not block waiting for more entropy. As a result, if there is not sufficient entropy in the entropy pool, the returned values are theoretically vulnerable to a cryptographic attack on the algorithms used by the driver. Knowledge of how to do this is not available in the current non-classified literature, but it is theoretically possible that such an attack may exist. If this is a concern in your application, use /dev/random instead.
Now let’s get back on our JDBC problem. Oracle JDBC 11g seems to use /dev/random by default, which causes usually no trouble on clients running with console access by a user, because his/her unpredictable :) actions will keep the entropy pool well-fed. But to make it usable on a headless server with a latently empty entropy pool, you should do several things, in descending security order (without warranty):
    1. Involve an audio entroy daemon like AED to gather noise from your datacenter with an open microphone, maybe combine it with a webcam noise collector like VED. Other sources are talking about “Cryptographic Randomness from Air Turbulence in Disk devices“. :)
    2. Use the Entropy Gathering Daemon to collect weaker entropy from randomness of userspace programs.
    3. Talk your JDBC into using /dev/urandom instead:
    -Djava.security.egd=file:///dev/urandom"

  • Sudden extreme slow performance

I have run Tiger on this machine for about 6 months with no problems. In the last few weeks everything has started slowing down noticably. The hard disk is running ragged, constantly reading/writing, from looking at the cpu monitor it seems like the computer is not actually using it's ram and is just reading and writing. I tried clearing caches and that worked for a few hours but the machine now seems to lock up after a few hours use. I get to the point where i cannot open menus, switch programs, or even force quit or restart. Everything locks up - spinning beachball - and the hard disk is left constantly writing. I have 9 -15Gb free out of 40Gb on the disk - i assume this is enough. Playing music and safari is no problem. But I am using iphoto and photoshop as well as other programs in the background. This was never previously a problem and ran smoothly. I know it's fairly vague but if anyone can help..

    Hi, Ben.
Thanks. However, it would help to see some of the specific data points from the instructions in those FAQs. Specifically:
    1. You wrote: "(the pageins/outs are about equal) but i'm getting REALLY slow performance across the board. "It still sounds like it is "thrashing."1.1. Did you check the pagesin/pageouts per second as described in my "Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space" FAQ? The per-second values can only be found using top as described therein.
1.2. Did you check for a runaway process in Activity Monitor per the "Troubleshooting" section in my "Tuning Mac OS X Performance" FAQ?.
The activity you describe (beach ball, heavy disk writing) has to be coming from somewhere, so checking Activity Monitor as I describe in that FAQ should tell you. Find the process consuming the most %CPU as instructed in the FAQ. Post back the result, i.e. the process name.2. You wrote: "It seems to lock itself up with the hard disk clicking and crunching. Is it possible the hard disk is giving up and so is writing at a very slow speed??? "To check this, see my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ:2.1. Perform at least Steps 1-3 of the Procedure section therein in the order specified.
2.2. Also, review the section therein on "Bad Sectors" to see if the "clicking and crunching" sounds you are hearing are similar to those that generally indicate bad sectors.3. If the disk checks out OK per point 2 above, and depending on what you find in point 1.2 above, the process may be an errant Startup or Login Item. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    Good luck!

  • T42 hangs, extremely slow performance

    Hello,
I can boot up my T42, but it works very slowly.  In safe mode with networking, it works great.  I have automatic updates turned on, but it cannot successfully download updates.  It still has service pack 2.  Not sure if that's related to slow performance.
