Extremely slow performance

I have a 400 MHZ g4 Power Mac (PowerPC) with PCI graphics - running OSX 10.3.9 and it has slowed to a crawl. I get the spinning wheel when I try to switch between two windows of an open program - and I'm basically using this computer for basic email and web browsing - that's it.
What can I do? Is it dying on me?

Try in this order:
1. Check the S.M.A.R.T. Status for your drives under Disk Utility. Backup your data now, in case the disk is going bad. I mean NOW. Not 5 mins later.
2. Create a new user and see if you can reproduce the problem. If the new user works fine then you know it's not a hardware problem.
3. Unplug all USB devices. Can you still reproduce the problem? Unplug from the network.
4. Make sure all the connections are tight from the drives to the mainboard, make sure the components are seated properly.
5. Use Disk Utility to verify the disk, after you have made the backup.
6. If you have access to a new disk, try a new disk and reinstall (not clone) the OS. Does the problem go away?
It could be a lot of things. You kind of have to be patient and work through each possibility. The most likely issues are: (a) corrupt prefs file etc.; (b) problematic disk; (c) something on the network timing out or something on the USB (or any other bus) not responding.

  • Extremely slow performance with Radeon HD 7870

    Hi,
I am using a number of Adobe programs on my new Windows 8 64 bit system, with 16 gigs of ram, an Intel Core i5 2.67ghz, and AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 gig. All the programs (including After Effects and Illustrator) work very well with the exception of Photoshop CS6 64 bit, which has extremely slow performance with Use Graphics Processor enabled in my preferences (which Photoshop selects by default). If I turn off Use Graphics Processor, the slow performance vanishes. If I change Drawing Mode to Basic, there might be a slightly detectable improvement over Normal and Advanced, but it's still horribly slow. The refresh rate seems to be just a few frames per second. Everything is slow: brushes, zooming, panning, everything.
I've tried changing the settings I've seen suggested elsewhere: I switched Cache levels to 2, history states to 10, and tile size to 128k. No effect. Photoshop is currently at the default of using 60% of available ram. Efficiency has remained at 100% throughout all my tests. Also, this slow performance has affected me from the moment I installed Photoshop; it didn't crop up after previous good performance. The problem exists regardless of the size or number of documents I have open. Performance is still terrible even when I create a 500 x 500 pixel blank new canvas and try a simple task like drawing with the brush.
Photoshop is fully up to date, and so are my graphics drivers (Catalyst version 13.1). Any help would be greatly appreciated; at the moment performance is so bad in Photoshop that it's unusable with graphics acceleration enabled. Thanks in advance for replying.

    Great news!
I followed your suggestion, Noel, and uninstalled my drivers with the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (which I hadn't used before), rebooted, reinstalled Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7, rebooted, deleted the PS Prefs, started PS, and now the performance is radically improved!
It baffles me why I would need to do a clean driver uninstall in a new system environment that has only ever had this video card, and is only a few months old, but that action seems to be what's improved the situation. Note that because I deleted the PS preferences, the good performance now occurs with the default Use Graphics Processor enabled, and Drawing Mode set to Advanced (with every feature in the Advanced dialog checked except 30bit display).
Having no reference point, I can't tell for sure if performance is as good as it theoretically ought to be for my system specs, but using the standard 13px brush is only slightly laggy behind the cursor, even if I become reckless and squiggle on the canvas violently. It wasn't just sluggish response before: Photoshop seemed to be in pain trying to draw the line segments as it laboured to catch up to the cursor. That is pretty much gone now.
Much more tellingly, zooming and panning the canvas is like it ought to be, responsive and clean, more or less like it was for me in CS4 with my old Nvidia 9600GT. The poor performance with zooming and panning was the most worrying aspect of the issue. It's a great relief to see these working more properly now.
I have to confess I'm a little embarrassed to have drug you through all this hassle only to discover that something as rudimentary as properly cleaning out the drivers would be the apparent solution. I never would have imagined that doing that, with such a new and stable system, would make any difference, since I don't have a legacy of older drivers dotting my hard drive. In any event, I'm really grateful that you guys took the time to try to help me.
In the interest of completeness, here's the relevant portion of my system info after doing the reinstall steps I mentioned above:

As you can see, the Microsoft Basic Render Driver still appears as a Video Card in the list. This presumably has something to do with Windows 8, and I really don't know if its presence here is still a sign that my card is not being used to its optimal capability. I have a hunch that the slight lag that I am still experiencing with the brush when Use Graphics Processor is on -- totally absent with the acceleration turned off -- implies that Photoshop is still unable to take maximum advantage of my card. I would assume that the brush tool should be more responsive with acceleration on than off, in a rig without any issues, but that's just assumption on my part. If you turn off Use Graphics Processor on your systems, is the brush tool more or less responsive?
But again, panning the canvas with the hand tool is now extremely responsive, without any screen tearing or visible lag, and that's a massive improvement over the total meltdown of performance I was suffering from before.
Thanks again very much for your help. I'm grateful to all of you who took the time to chime in.

  • Airport Express and USB Hard drive and extremely slow performance

    HI Guys,
I seem to having a lot of trouble with an Airport express and a Lacie 1TB drive. While I have solved several problems by updating firmware and enabling journalling on the Lacie, I am still having problems with extremely slow performance with my macbook, particularly using itunes and Firefox.
Any ideas and any further information needed?

If I do Need to completely reformat it using Disk Utility, will I lose my files on the disk now?
not if you move them to a temporary location before you start.
yes, you are better of formatting the drive with DU.

  • Extremely slow performance on projects under version control using RoboHelp 11, PushOk, Tortoise SVN repository

We are also experiencing extremely slow performance for RoboHelp projects under version control. We are using RoboHelp 11, PushOk and a Tortoise SVN repository on a Linux server. We are using a Linux server on our IT guys advice because we found SVN version control under Windows was unstable.
When placing a Robohelp project under version control, and yes the project is on my local machine, it can take up to two hours to complete. We are using the RoboHelp sample projects to test.
We have tried to put the project under version control from Robohelp, and also tried first putting the project under version control from Tortoise SVN, and then trying to open the project from version control in Robohelp. In both cases, the project takes a ridiculous amount of time to open. The Robohelp status bar displays Querying Version Control Status for about an hour before it starts to download from the repository, which then takes more than an hour to complete. In many cases Robohelp becomes unresponsive and we have to start the whole process again.
If adding the project to source control completes successfully, and the the project is opened from version control, performing any function also takes a very long time, such as creating a topic. When I generated a printed documentation layout it took an astonishing 218 minutes and 17 seconds to complete. Interestingly, when I generated the printed documentation layout again, it took 1 min and 34 seconds. However when I closed the project, opened from version control, and tried to generate a printed documentation layout, it again took several hours to complete. The IT guys are at a loss, and say it is not a network issue and I am starting to agree that this is a RoboHelp issue.
I see there are a few other discussions here related to this kind of poor performance, none of which seem to been answered satisfactorily. For example:
Why does it take so long when adding a new topic in RH10 with PushOK SVN
Does anybody have any ideas on what we can do or what we can investigate? I know that there are options for version control, but am reluctant to pursue them until I am satisfied that our current issues cannot be resolved.
    Thanks Mark

Do other applications work fine with the source control repository? The reason I'm asking is because you must first rule out that there are external factors causing this behaviour. It seems that your it guys have already looked at it, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
I have used both VSS and TFS and I haven't encountered such a performance issue. I would suggest filing it as a bug if you rule out that the problem is not related to external influences: https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform&loc=en

  • Extremely slow performance transferring data over USB with Time Capsule

I have the 2TB wireless Time Capsule. I have it setup as an extension to my current WiFi at home, since I already had a WLAN router. I have an external harddrive (500gig) that I connected to my Time Capsule because I wanted to transfer data from the Time Capsule to the external HD. The external HD is formatted with FAT32 file system, so read/write is no problem.
When, using my MacBook Pro, I navigated to the Time Capsule and dragged files over to the connected USB harddrive (connected directly in the Time Capsule), the performance to transfer is extremely SLOW! It was slower than doing the transfer completely wirelessly (USB drive connected to laptop and transfer wirelessly from TC)!
I do not understand this at all! It should be a simple transfer using the USB connection! When I do a transfer from my laptop directly to the USB harddrive, with it connected directly to the laptop, the transfers are super fast!
What happened? Can someone please explain this or tell me what I need to do?
    Thank you!

    I am still confused here.
My original question was regarding the use of my USB external harddrive. It was connected to the back of the TC. The TC was wirelessly speaking to my WLAN router. Using my laptop (also wirelessly speaking to WLAN router), I navigated to the TC and saw 2 listings - one for the data on the harddrive in the TC and one for the new external USB drive connected to the back of the TC. I wanted to transfer data from the harddrive in the TC to the USB external drive. Based on what I expected, I thought the transfer rate would merely be limited by the USB 2.0 interface that is being used by the external drive. However, I was definitely wrong! The transfer rate (shown by the estimate in time to transfer the data by my MacBook Pro) was doubled to 14 hrs.
Originally, it was only 7 hrs when the USB external drive is connected directly to my laptop and I connect to the TC wirelessly. Weird!
So why doesn't the TC simply transfer the data from its internal harddrive to the external USB drive directly without using any wireless technology?
The second question I have is regarding the setup of the TC itself. I have a NetGear WLAN router and its an "n" router. So the speed is good. I have my TC currently downstairs from the WLAN router. Therefore the TC is setup as simply a wireless harddrive. It speaks through the WLAN router in order to be available to all my laptops in my house. My question is whether it should instead be directly connected to the WLAN router using an ethernet cable? Would this improve my overall transfer rates to/from the TC?
    Thanks so much.

  • Sudden extreme slow performance

I have run Tiger on this machine for about 6 months with no problems. In the last few weeks everything has started slowing down noticably. The hard disk is running ragged, constantly reading/writing, from looking at the cpu monitor it seems like the computer is not actually using it's ram and is just reading and writing. I tried clearing caches and that worked for a few hours but the machine now seems to lock up after a few hours use. I get to the point where i cannot open menus, switch programs, or even force quit or restart. Everything locks up - spinning beachball - and the hard disk is left constantly writing. I have 9 -15Gb free out of 40Gb on the disk - i assume this is enough. Playing music and safari is no problem. But I am using iphoto and photoshop as well as other programs in the background. This was never previously a problem and ran smoothly. I know it's fairly vague but if anyone can help..

    Hi, Ben.
Thanks. However, it would help to see some of the specific data points from the instructions in those FAQs. Specifically:
    1. You wrote: "(the pageins/outs are about equal) but i'm getting REALLY slow performance across the board. "It still sounds like it is "thrashing."1.1. Did you check the pagesin/pageouts per second as described in my "Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space" FAQ? The per-second values can only be found using top as described therein.
1.2. Did you check for a runaway process in Activity Monitor per the "Troubleshooting" section in my "Tuning Mac OS X Performance" FAQ?.
The activity you describe (beach ball, heavy disk writing) has to be coming from somewhere, so checking Activity Monitor as I describe in that FAQ should tell you. Find the process consuming the most %CPU as instructed in the FAQ. Post back the result, i.e. the process name.2. You wrote: "It seems to lock itself up with the hard disk clicking and crunching. Is it possible the hard disk is giving up and so is writing at a very slow speed??? "To check this, see my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ:2.1. Perform at least Steps 1-3 of the Procedure section therein in the order specified.
2.2. Also, review the section therein on "Bad Sectors" to see if the "clicking and crunching" sounds you are hearing are similar to those that generally indicate bad sectors.3. If the disk checks out OK per point 2 above, and depending on what you find in point 1.2 above, the process may be an errant Startup or Login Item. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    Good luck!

Ok guys, this is pretty frustrating. Today I bought 2 new external hdd's, same manufacturer, same model. One of them seems to work great, but the other one.. well  look at this:

    Timing buffered disk reads: 96 MB in 3.04 seconds = 31.53 MB/sec
    bash-3.2# hdparm -t /dev/sdj1

  • Extremely slow performance with ojdbc6.jar on IBM JVMs (Java 6)

We are consistently seeing slow performance (easily demonstrable by the simplest of test cases) while using ojdbc6.jar on IBM JDKs. Pefrormance is normal when we simply opt for ojdbc14.jar under the same JDK, same java program.
    Works well
    =======
    JRockit, ojdbc6.jar
    JRockit, ojdbc14.jar
    IBM JDK, ojdbc14.jar
    A lot slower
    =======
    IBM JDK, ojdbc6.jar
All we had to do was to write a simple JDBC access program and measure time taken around
    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(jdbcURL, dbProps);
The first 3 combinations mentioned above return comparable numbers. The 4th combination takes 3-4 times as much.
We initially saw this during performance test of our software on WebSphere (also supported on Weblogic). Later was able to eliminate WebSphere and Weblogic as the problem areas and narrow it down to the JVM. Reproduce-able on development machines.
We have been using Oracle/WLS since BEA used to market 'Tengah' servers. This is the worst we have seen as far as the qaulity of support staff goes. We first level support seems clueless. We filed this case and the support comes back tells us that IBM JDKs are not supported for WLS! Oh, we have been running WLS/AIX/IBM JVM combination only for 5+ years.

A quick solution to test this would be to do the following:
    mv /dev/random /dev/random.bk
    ln /dev/urandom /dev/random
Note: The quick solution will disappear after a reboot. You could add it to rc.local to automatically make this change, but I wouldn't recommend it.
    The following is from [http://www.usn-it.de/index.php/2009/02/20/oracle-11g-jdbc-driver-hangs-blocked-by-devrandom-entropy-pool-empty/]:
"Oracle 11g JDBC driver hangs blocked by /dev/random – entropy pool empty
On a headless (=without console) network server, the 11g JDBC driver used for (java) application connect may cause trouble. In my case, it refused to connect to the DB without any error, trace or log entry. It simply hung. After several hours, it connected one time, and freezed again. Remote debugging done by the development clarified that it locks after calling SeedGenerator() and SecureRandom().
Reason: The JDBC 11g needs about 40 bytes of secure random numbers, gathered from /dev/random, to encrypt its connect string.
But public-available “man 4 random” says:
When read, the /dev/random device will only return random bytes within the estimated number of bits of noise in the entropy pool. /dev/random should be suitable for uses that need very high quality randomness such as one-time pad or key generation. When the entropy pool is empty, reads from /dev/random will block until additional environmental noise is gathered.
So far so good, now the question arises: Why does this mystic “entropy pool” runs out of gas?
The answer is as simple as unsatisfying: because too less entropy “noise” was generated by the system. You can check the “filling level” (maybe zero?) of your pool and the overall size of the pool (usually 4096) by issuing
    cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail
    cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/poolsize
Hint: /dev/random will deliver one new random number as soon as the pool has reached more than 64 entropy units.
So why does my box not generate more entropy noise?
Because only few drivers will fill the entropy pool, first of all keyboard and mouse. Sounds very useful on a server in a datacenter, isn’t it? Some block device and network drivers seem to do so as well, and I have read from guys on the net changing their network card and driver to enjoy this “feature”! But let’s stop ranting, /dev/random is simply made for high security randomness, and if it can’t make sure that randomness is as good as possible in this deterministic world, it stops. Intelligent people have created /dev/urandom for that, like “man 4 random” clearly states:
A read from the /dev/urandom device will not block waiting for more entropy. As a result, if there is not sufficient entropy in the entropy pool, the returned values are theoretically vulnerable to a cryptographic attack on the algorithms used by the driver. Knowledge of how to do this is not available in the current non-classified literature, but it is theoretically possible that such an attack may exist. If this is a concern in your application, use /dev/random instead.
Now let’s get back on our JDBC problem. Oracle JDBC 11g seems to use /dev/random by default, which causes usually no trouble on clients running with console access by a user, because his/her unpredictable :) actions will keep the entropy pool well-fed. But to make it usable on a headless server with a latently empty entropy pool, you should do several things, in descending security order (without warranty):
    1. Involve an audio entroy daemon like AED to gather noise from your datacenter with an open microphone, maybe combine it with a webcam noise collector like VED. Other sources are talking about “Cryptographic Randomness from Air Turbulence in Disk devices“. :)
    2. Use the Entropy Gathering Daemon to collect weaker entropy from randomness of userspace programs.
    3. Talk your JDBC into using /dev/urandom instead:
    -Djava.security.egd=file:///dev/urandom"

  • Extremely slow performance in comparison to RDC-based report

Today our application uses the Crystal Reports RDC. In the last
ten years we have made good experience with Crystal Reports.
In the next few months we want to migrate our application to
    JAVA.
Because the reports offer a great reuse-potential, we would like
    to implement them via CR4E.
But during the first benchmark tests we made a very bad experience.
Running (Printing) in CR4E the reports needed from 20 up to 480 percent
more time in comparison to the RDC-based reports.
When using POJOs need from 25 up to 570 percent more time.
When printing the reports from within the CR2008 designer there is
    no performance difference.
The reports have from 4 to 82 pages.
We didn´t expect such a huge performance difference.
Is CR4E in general slower than the RDC-based Crystal Reports?
Or are there any parameters in CR4E in addition to the RDC-based
    solution for tuning the reports?
Edited by: Rainer Graedtke on Nov 9, 2009 2:44 PM

    Hi Ted,
    thanks for the fast response.
Is there another "datasource option" with better performance than POJO?
In the upcoming JAVA-version of our application we would like to "feed"
our reports from memory, not from the underlying database.
One more statement concerning our performance problem:
In our reports we make extensive use of subreports.
Each report has the minimum of two subreports, one for the pageheader,
    one for the pagefooter.
This is necessary because we have changing headers and footers
depending on the contents of the details.
The report with the largest performance loss contains 29 subreports!
RDC-based it prints in 10 seconds, Java-based we need over 50 seconds.
Is there any suggestion how to improve the performance of our reports in
JAVA/CR4E other than reducing the number of subreports?
    Another question concerning the keycode-problem:
We have designed the reports in the CR2008 Designer and we want to run
them under CR4E. Is this a valid approach?

  • SSRS Extreme Slow Performance on Grouping / DrillDown Action with Internet Explorer

    Hi
I have an Infrastructure with SQL Server 2012 / SSRS 2012 / VS 2012 and IE 11 and custom authentication.
Reports can be opened in reasonable time, despite when they are grouped, they are silly slow (2-10 min for 1000 records).
I've already checked the other well known topics causing the same issue with stored procedure parameters and "keep together".
I think this could be a Internet Explorer Bug, because in SQL Server Profiler the queries are running fast (< 3sec.) and also the SSRS executionLog 2 shows fast performance. Unfortunately I can not try to compare it with another browser, because we need
    the Custom Authentication Module.
Surprisingly when I group the rows, but do not use the +/- symbols for drilldown, the report is processed in zero time, as well as when I have no grouping, just plain rows...
Any Idea? Could it be a security setting blocking something?
    Cheers Lu_F

    Hi Lu_F,
As per my understanding, there are grouping and drilldown report in the report, the report can run in reasonable time even through there is grouping, if you expand drilldown reports, the report runs very slowly.
Report server performance is affected by a combination of factors that include hardware, number of concurrent users accessing reports, the amount of data in a report, and output format. In this case, in would recommend you open the report in the Report Manager
from the Report Server machine, and check if the Drill-Down works as expected. If it works, please contact your network team to fix the network issue. By design, the Drill-Down uses JavaScript to do a postback to the report server to expand or collapse the
toggled items. If there has a network issue, the action will be a little slow.
In addition, in order to improve the performance of the report, we can split drilldown reports into parameterized drillthrough reports, because Drillthrough reports do not run until a user clicks the drillthrough link in the main report. Drilldown reports
process all data even when the data is first hidden. You can also add cache and snapshot for the report if you don’t need up-to-date results, this means that you will not see newest data until it is refreshed.

  • Numbers 09 Extremely Slow Performance

We have been working on our end of year bank accounts in Numbers and I just tried our spread sheet in the new version.
The new version is terribly slow, it took 24 seconds to open the file in the 09 version compared with 6 seconds in the 08 version and allocating categories to entries in the lists of transactions took 12 seconds in the 09 version compared with 3 seconds in the 08 version.
Something is very wrong with the new version.
Why would Apple release this version when has such poor performance. Numbers 08 was very slow compared to Microsoft Excel, now it is even worse.

    jaxjason,
I am not using a 'Category Function' I just assign my own categories to my bank account entries (such as 'Groceries', 'Car Insurance', etc.) My spreadsheet then sorts out the entries from files down loaded from the banks into summary tables by month and 'Category' using the following:
    In version 08

I am using an iMac 24 inch (Intel) with the latest OS X 10.5.6.
As I said it takes four times longer to open the file and it takes four times longer for the spreadsheet to calculate every 'Category' assignment I make. I have tried saving the file from the new version but that did not make any difference.
The spreadsheet consists of five 'Sheets' two containing the years transactions in our VISA and Checking account downloaded from the Banks Two 'Summary' Sheet one for Visa and one for Checking Account and a 'Final Summary' with three tables where the results from the VISA and Bank Accounts are finally collected into different forms.

  • SBS 2011 extremely slow performance

    Hi,
Over the past few months we have been having VERY slow file and exchange access with our SBS 2011 Standard.
    Specs are: HP Proliant ML330G6 / 32GB Ram / Intel Xeon E5506 @ 2.13Ghz / Fully up to date with SP1
    Around 40 users.
Originally we thought it may have been networking issues as the server performance itself was not so bad so we replaced the network with.
    2x HP Procurve 1410 Switches
    Sonicwall TZ200
Now server use both remotely and physically is slow. This morning it took about 15 minutes just to get past the login screen and load the SBS console.
Exchange management console can take up to 10 minutes to load.
User's are experiencing major delays on saving files. (E.G Powerpoint can take up to 2 minutes to save a 2MB file)
Outlook for all user's constantly becomes not responding and/or crashes with emails sometimes in outbox for 5 minutes before sending. Webmail is is slow internally it is not useable.
Have ran BPA etc. spent countless days going through technet and general google articles.
Not winning at the moment and need some ideas.

    Hi,
is the machine also slow, if you login locally and try to copy stuff around on the local disk?
If so, check the event logs for potential issues, also use resource monitor to find bottlenecks, memory leaks etc.
Other than that: The network card drivers should be kept up to date (not always the server maker offers the most current).
You may also check, if issues around Task Offloading or Receive Side Scaling affect the performance. To test this, you can run following commands to disable these features:
netsh int tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled
    eventually also
netsh int tcp set global congestion=none
Check also the information in following links:

  • Extremely Slow performance with X58 Platinum

I just upgraded from a core 2 quad 6600 with 8 gb of ram
to a core i7 920 on an X58 Platinum with 12 gb of 1333 ram (yes the ram is an approved spec according to the MSI online manual....I checked the part numbers on the ram)
I have an 9800gx2 and a velociraptor for a system drive, I have all the latest windows updates(vista 64) and the new 1.1 bios revision...and all the graphic card updates and chipset updates from intel
It is running so slow that as I type this the letters on screen cannnot keep up with my fingers, and I am not that fast of a typer.
It fells like I went back in time to a p3 or something.
Where should I begin to diagnose the problem??
    Thanks in advance

I too have stepped back in time with my x

OS                            Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate(64 Bit)
I am running Raid 0 and performance is just terrible.Overclocks like a champ but the board is pretty much useless when it runs slow.
Things I have tried installed BIOS 322 which brang boot time to desktop to 1 minute 45 secs slow but ok I guess, some improvement in a couple games.
Installed XP64 no help or performance gain.
Windows 7 would just not install any drivers at all.
Vista 64 8 installs with no performance with different drivers.(You can install drivers off usb stick)
Bought a new Motherboard but I am going to wait a few days more and see if others BIOS will help.
There seems to be a few new BIOS I will try some them out today.
Contacted MSI tech support and they were kind enough to suggest the bios, you can give that a shot and see if it helps you out.My board is Platinum SLI board but should be same as Platinum board also but they have all the platinum BIos there too.
Regarding your concern, please log into following link to download and update to the latest bios A7522IMS.322:
-ftp link, username, password removed--not for public release
We would suggest you try to update the BIOS by using USB Bootable pendrive. It is convenienct for you:
1.First of all, please make a bootable USB.You can download USBoot.rar from following link. Then please unzip this software and install it to make a booting USB device:
--ftp link, username, password removed--not for public release
2.Next go to our website to download BIOS file, then copy “AFUD4281.exe” and “A7522IMS.322” into USB.
3.After that, restart PC, press F11, choose USB booting under “boot sequence”.
4.Under DOS mode, please type “AFUD4281.exe A7522IMS.322”(without the quotation marks)and it will be updated successfully!!
Remember to clean CMOS and Load Optimized Defaults under bios setup after you finish the BIOS update!

  • Extremely slow performance with SR5105 Lockins in LabView 7.1

    Hello,
I currently have an application which I've created for controlling a device used in cervical cancer diagnosis. This software has various controls ranging from controlling filter wheels with stepper motors, video capture, lockin data analysis and other various functions.
Everything is working well except the update rate at which I'm receiving results from my 2 Signal Recovery (SR) model 5105 lockins.
SR has provided labview drivers and even a starting interface which works perfectly under normal conditions. However I'm running 2 lockins concurrently and I'm getting very laggy results.
When I run the lockin vi from SR, the update rate is about once every .25 seconds or at least twice a second. When I put the same code into my application the update rate becomes very slow, ranging from once every 3 to once every 6 seconds. I've read the forums thoroughly as well as contacted an NI tech engineer but couldn't resolve this problem. I've heard that there might be a way to change execution settings in labview which would speed this up or perhaps I'm just doing something wrong (I'm pretty new at labview, about a year experience).
I'm including the code that I have. Unfortunately it won't run on your machine because it needs to be connected to proper hardware.
Pretty much I have about 5-6 parallel loops and at the very top you can see two identical copies of the lockin code. What can I do to improve performance? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. I have actually found a way to fix the problem and it had nothing to do with the subvi's in my application (well almost nothing . The first thing I tried doing was taking out the display local variables which displayed lockin data on 3 screens of my application into 1 separate while loop and replacing the Lockin driver code with global variables which had only the data I wanted to display. This helped a little bit but here's what fixed my problem completely.
When I created 2 lockin SubVIs I forgot to go into File->VI Properties->Execution and there select Time critical priority and in the other option drop down list: data acquisition.
As soon as I did that in the 2 subvi's the lockins actually began performing in real time and now it takes milliseconds to detect the signal and to update the displays.
I hope this helps. I'm surprised the NI Tech rep I spoke with, hasn't recommended this even though I asked if there are perhaps some sort of compiling or priority options in LabView.
Well I'm happy since my problem is now fixed, I just need to get a little more RAM now.
