Extremely slow Safari, Mail, Firefox,etc.

I have been experiencing an extremely slow computer. Safari, Apple Mail, Firefox, Apple App store, iTunes store, any app the requires the internet. Sometimes it takes Google.com 30 seconds to load. Apple Mail routinely times out. After loading a web page and then selecting the back button, it takes over 30 seconds to reload the previous page. I have turned off iCloud.
I contacted my ISP,  two service calls to check the line and they replaced the cable modem. The results from Speedtest.net were +25Mbps download so their advice was to call Apple.
I have been getting a Recoverd files folder in the trash when I start up the compter. Activity monitor only shows, activity in Finder, Firefox, and Acitvity Monitor, so nothing else is running in the background.
Any suggestions? Have I missed something?
Should I do a Clean Install?
iMac, 27 inch, 3.4 Ghz Intel Core i7, 8GB memory,  Mac OS 10.8.2
Thank you.

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.
From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. After testing, reboot as usual and post the results.

  • How to close safari, mail, apps, etc.

The 3G iPhone is my first smartphone and am loving it, but today for the first time there is a 3-5 second lag while typing out texts, email, etc. Could this be to too many applications open at once? i.e. how do you close safari, mail, etc besides just pressing the home key. Not sure if this could be causing the slow response or something else.

Some people have cured this with a hard reset(hold down power button and home button until apple logo appears). You can also try installing the slightly later build of the firmware. Just do a restore in iTunes and you will go from build ...45 to ...47.

  • Slow Safari and Firefox with sys. 10.4.11

Since installing sys. 10.4.11 both Safari and Firefox have become extremely slow. Safari can take 25, 30 or more seconds to open a page. I haven't noticed a speed change in other apps. I have a DSL router which serves 4 computers. Sys. 10.4.8 was much faster. Any ideas are welcome.
    Thanks.

I've experienced the same thing. Thought it was my DSL ISP and complained numerous times. Went from avg. 2600 kbps down/ 768kbps up to 860 kbps down and 13 kbps up. This range is consistent on all machines on my network, and with both Firefox and Safari. Last night, I hooked up my IBM lap top and re-ran the test: got 2586 kbps down and 457 kbps up on the PC. Now I think my ISP may be correct -- they don't see a problem with the lines. Looking back, the slow down for the Macs coincides with 10.4.11 updates. Tonight I'll begin looking at the Macs to see why they can't connect at the same rate as before the update, and at the same rate as the PC. Any suggestions on how to restore Mac performance?

  • Installation of software updates in mail, firefox etc.

When I recently did updates to several programs including firefox, safari, and mail, they will not open. It seems the update loaded correctly, but then the program will not open. Any ideas how to fix it?

The computer is set up for automatic updates.
    That could be the problem.
    General advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_4_11_Combo_Update__PPC
And for Intel Macs: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eintel.html
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Slow Safari and Firefox

I have had my iBook G4 for some three years now and have had very few problems with it. Recently my browsers have begun to run very slowly. With most wireless connections, I cannot virtually run the Firefox application because it is so slow to download a single page that it is just not feasible to use it. Safari is slightly faster but not enough. With wired connections they run OK but again not fast enough. Nothing like what they used to be or how other computers run. I have been told to hold the Command Key + Option + P + R and let my machine go through three or four cycles of restarting itself and it would clean things up. No effect! I have also emptied the chaces of both browsers, as well as cleaned the cookies. But nothing has changed yet. I am really frustrated now. Is there anyway someone could help me with this?
I have 1.33 GHz Power PC G4 and 1.25 GB RAM.

    Ron,
You can run the cron maintenance scripts by using a freeware utility such as MacJanitor (found on VersionTracker or MacUpdate) which is probably the easiest or you can run them via Terminal by opening Terminal found in your Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app.
Here are the instructions from Dr. Smoke's excellent FAQ, from the X-Lab, for running them manually:
"Using your Admin account, you can execute all three maintenance scripts at once, as follows:
Launch Terminal, in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder.
At the Terminal prompt, type the following, exactly as written:
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
    Press Return.
Type your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
All three scripts will run in sequence. There is no visual feedback while the scripts execute. You will know they are completed when the Terminal prompt returns."
They might take a few minutes to run but that might help significantly if you have never ran them and you sleep your computer at night when the OS normally runs these.
Here is the direct link to Dr. Smoke's FAQ: "Running the Mac OS X maintenance scripts"

PS. You appear to have more than enough free disk space available so that should not be the problem.

  • Is there a way to auto-start applications in full screen, such as Safari, Mail, iTunes etc.?

I would like several applications to start in full screen, including Mail, Safari and iTunes, rather than starting them, then making them full screen. Is there a setting somewhere or a way of doing that? Thanks in advance.

I found it. In System Preferences under General "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" has to be checked. However when that is checked it takes you back to all of the sites you had open when you quit the app. I would prefer it start full screen, but back at the home page. Do yours do that as well?

  • Extremely slow Safari and Fire Fox

Recently - around a week or so ago, my safari and fire fox on my macbook air became excessively slow. I have two macbook airs in my household and one functions perfectly while the other takes a very long time to load any pages, even simple sites such as google. So it is not a problem of my router or my ISP. The interesting thing is that this problem does not affect MSN and downloading whatsoever.
So I was wondering whether there are others out there who have the same problem and/or a solution to this problem. I've thought of wiping my macbook air, but realized i didn't know how to do that on a mac (as i'm traditionally a pc user). So i'm desparately in need of a solution

  • IOS8 severe crashes in multiple apps like safari, mail, photos etc.

since updating to ios8 two days ago, the ipad air 128gb is severly unstable. in multiple apps the unit turns to apple logo and starts again, like a watch dog program detecting a false operation resetting itself. in this case without blue screen as described in other posts.
    extremly annoying.
other problems appeared with ios 8 in my ipad2 and ipad3 like extreme battery drain or stopping programs.
i will downgrade to ios7 until problems are likely to be fixed.
i ordered iphone 6+ 128g i hope the problems do not persist there. otherwise i will switch to samsung.
ios8 "...most advanced operating system of all times". pah! if it would work..... maybe.

I haven't seen any other topics like this one - apparently the issues we are experiencing are not wide spread. Time to start exploring other possibilities here I guess. I'm hoping this won't end up with me having to reformat and/or reinstall.
It does seem to get better over time. Hangs are much more frequent when the machine first starts up.
Just a few minutes ago I got three separate beach balls lasting about 30 seconds a piece when attempting to hit cmd-F (find) in Firefox. It is a system wide hang as well - if I go back to the finder it will switch but then almost immediately the beach ball will come up again and I can't go anywhere else. After a few moments all the mouse clicks/keyboard events catch up and I am good to go again.
FYI - I did a firewire migration assistant transfer from my old late 2008 15 inch MBP the first day I got this machine. Any chance something in the system was copied over that should not have been?

  • Itunes,Mail, Safari,AND Firefox closing!

Hello there. This has been happening the past two days. When I use safari, text will be garbled, letters missing in the headers, and all the text pushed to the left.
When I try to go to certain sites like wikipedia, safari and firefow will close and Ill get the pop ups saying "blah blah program has closed unexpectedly"[...] .
When I try to connect to the itunes music store, itunes will fail and when I try and view my mail from the mail app, that will close as well.
This seems all tied into the internet so is there anything I can do?

Seraphim - most any of the various plugins/input managers etc have been known to cause problems of one sort or another. QT 7.0.4 causes problems with certain 3rd party apps & add-ons.
I would take a leap first & try rolling back QT to 7.0.1
If (by chance!) things work fine afterwards - you can probably update to 7.0.3
    Otherwise....my approach would be
1: create a new user account for testing & confirm that the problem does not show up there.
2: Remove all input managers ( to a safe place!) ,restart & test. If it's ok, start adding them back, one at a time....until the crashes recur.
    3: Same with contents of /library/internet plug-ins/ and /home/library/internet plug-ins/
    4: remove/disable anything else non-apple
If you still get crashes after 2,3 & 4 , then capture some more logs ( safari good for me) before you re-enable all the things mentioned.

  • Processing speed of my MacBook is extremely slow when opening applications, whether Mail, Safari or MSOffice

    Problem description:
The processing speed of any function is extremely slow - such as opening Mail, Safari, clicking on a page within Safari, switching to MS Word, adding a window in Safari, loading a page from Safari.  I get the spinning wheel most of the time before the action is completed. All other Macs which are newer in my home WiFi network operate just fine. I have done a top level (novice) check for malware, and haven’t found anything.  Any help you can suggest would be truly appreciated! Thank you!

Before you do anything do you have a current backup? If not make one.
I don't see any of the usual software suspects associated with slow downs. You don't need the Seagate software, you should uninstall that.
Reset the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support  and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
You only have 2GB of ram and could upgrade to 8GB, but Snow Leopard should run ok in 2GB.....not great but ok.
Start up in Safe Mode OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support be paitient as it will take awhile to start as it checks and tries to repair any problems with the file system. Once it's completely started up you can restart normally.
Insert your Snow Leopard disc and restart while holding the C key. Run Disk Utility to repair the hard drive and permissions. While in Disk Utility check the SMART status of the hard drive, anything other than Verified indicates a problem with the hard drive.
Again, you only have 2GB of ram.....try restarting your Macbook every day.....it's been running for almost a week now.

  • Slow responce for MAX OS mail, safari and firefox

    Hi,
    I have a puzzeling problem.
I have a IMAC intel late 2007 nov with 4gb ram and a 1TB harddisk (850GB disk free space)
With SnowLeopard and have run all software updates.
My problem is that mail, safari and firefox are running slow. But as I also have Parelles Desktop 6 I checked my Windows connection, and to my surprice my win explorer is running at normal speed. I then thought it was an issue with my Parallels configuration, but everything is set up with "run MAC faster" and I only dedicate 500mb ram for Windows so I stil have 3,5 GB ram for the MAX OSX.
It is not a boardband issue as I also run a macbookpro on same broardband with no problem.
I have tried to clean the mac with Macclearner and run antivirus. But still the 3 internet broadband programs Safai Firefox and mail through MAC OSX is runnning slow.
I hope someone can help me with fixing toe problem.
    Best regards
    Mads

    Mads,
It's possible your problem is being caused by the very products you are using to prevent problems, in other words the antivirus software and MacCleaner app. OS X does not need any third party maintenance software, in many instances such software tend to create more issues than they solve. I would STRONGLY recommend following the manufacturer's recommendations for removing both apps. Then empty the trash and do some basic trouble shooting using the tools built into OS X. The first thing I'd do is when the computer runs slow already have Activity Monitor open and check to see if a) how much FREE RAM  it has and b) look to see if there are any processes using a large %CPU. Your computer should have at least 500MB of FREE RAM at all times. If it runs low that will slow it down. What tends to use a lot of RAM are browsers, if you have lots of tabs open that will eat RAM like crazy. In that situation manage the amount of open tabs and restart the browser.
If you cannot track down the issue the next thing to do is restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible this is your problem one or more have become corrupted. I had this happen just yesterday, I noticed my system was running very slow and did a Safe Mode restart and bingo it's running like a new computer again.

  • Yahoo Mail extremely slow on Firefox 12

Yahoo Mail works fine in IE9 but is extremely slow on Firefox 12 after applying Java update 7.11 patch. Please advise on how to fix the issue.

Yo soci888! Why are you on Firefox 12? All the cool people are on Firefox 18 now. Time to upgrade and join the crew. Check out this upgrade link: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-version
Here is another suggested solution from another solver:
"I had the same problem. Opening Firefox in Safe mode cured it, so I knew it had to be a setting or plugin of some sort....I did all the recommended fixes and nothing changed the typing being real slow and behind when running in normal mode.
What fixed it for me is turning off the hardware acceleration option in Firefox. Here's how: Click on Firefox->Options->Advanced->General tab. Then uncheck the checkbox "Use hardware acceleration when available". Click OK. Hope it works for you. Good luck!"

  • Extremely slow address completion in Mail.app and general systems freeze

    Hello all,
Since the middle of last week I suddenly experienced
a extreme slow down of Mail.app address completion,
it take about a minute to type/complete an address even
whenever the completion option is checked in the preferences.
Then Mail.app use nearly all system disk ressources: 'ls' in a terminal
takes forever to complete, safari stops responding, etc... my Mac
is unusable. I got into situation where i couldn't force-quit
or ps/kill -9 any process,... reminiscent of a PC nightmare.
In addition some mail messages are painfully slow to display,
the problem seems to occur on some specific messages and does
not go away when completion is disabled.
This happens it seems, but I am not 100% sure, after I recieved
mails with with strange accentuated charaters and ';' in some
    CC addresses.
I go the zombie AddressBookSync problem described
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8380028
starting addressbook then Mail.app as suggested by on user
solved the zombie problem, but not the completion problem
and the system is still somewhat slugish. I got a 4GB 2.4Ghz
imac. Neither my mail nor any disk item substancially increased
    last week.
Now there is something strange. I tryed to remove putative
faulty addresse from previous recipient list with
'windows -> previous recipient' but the list is empty, yet
Mail.app does complete the addresses I type! (although it
does it at nerve breaking turtle speed), where are the
    completed addresses taken from???
Has any one experience this problem? Any idea?
    Thank
