Extremely slow system help on ETRE report

my mac became exteremely slow, in even the most basic tasks like switching between applications, copy&paste, etc. I suspect that there are running strange processes that are slowing down the system. I paste the report from ETRE herunder. Could someone take a check it and give me some recomendations? Would be great thank you!

hi john, hi all,
i was not able to remove all "User Login Items", because they did not show up, wether in the "pref pane / user / login items" nor in the library.
all cleaning did not have any effect.
So i decided to backup my data, formal the HD and install a virgin system. To avoid infecting the new system with any "germs" from the  old system, I did not migrate all the old data, but copied manually only my documents, but not system files etc.
Nontheless, my macbook pro is still slow in basic tasks (in particular opening windows and dialogs, typing i search fields of spotlight, mail, browser, etc, othe UI-interaction).
Does anybody have an idea, what is wrong?
After formating and before installing the new OS10.9 i run ckecks with:
- disk utility
- dr. web (antivirus)
- virus barrier (antivirus)
- onyx
no fatal errors where found. Everything was cleaned/fixed

  • Apple TV Extremely Slow - Please Help

I just received an Apple TV for Christmas and this is my first Apple product that I have ever been disappointed with. It's EXTREMELY SLOW! I am using it wirelessly through my Time Capsule and I have a pretty fast DSL connection. I also have a Roku box and a BluRay DVD player that has internet services as well like VuDu and NetFlix. Movies start almost instantly on all of my devices and play flawlessly except the Apple TV. Movies on Apple TV take about 5 to 8 minutes to start versus only just a few seconds on my Roku box and instantly using VuDu. Is this normal or do I have a defective unit?

Just wanted to let you all know that I have the same Problem
I own a iMac with 802.11 N WiFi With Airport Extreme I also use an iPhone 3GS WiFi G and have recently Purchased an Apple TV I can never get my Apple TV to hit rate speed of 72 or higher. I have tried everything My iMac hits rate speeds of 270 sometimes Using 802.11 N while my apple TV only hit 72 at the highest even My iPhone 3GS hit speeds of 58 to 60 with WiFi G. I have noticed that even if I set up a separate Network using the 5Ghz of the Airport Extreme I get even lower speeds like down to 38 to 40 on my Apple TV I realy dont have a lot of problems downloading movies per say but there have been times were I have had to wait like 20 min just to watch a 720p video from youtube or Movie Trailer. I can go from my TV to my computer using the same network and get the movie downloaded a lot faster using my computer???? What is going on Apple???? I really enjoy Apple products but I have to say I am somewhat unsatisfied with the Apple TV....What am I doing wrong??? I have tried to move my Airport extreme right next to Apple TV and with no speakers or anything around and I never get higher that 72 or so I Want to know is my iMac Airport Extreme Just reading it wrong or What... Please Help Apple????

  • Extremely Slow System when Compiling - New Macbook Pro

    Hello,
I am having numerous problems with the newest Macbook Pro 13 inch (16GB RAM i7) when compiling programs in the terminal. Every time I start a process whether it is compiling a file / installing a program etc the terminal window and other application freeze. It is important to note that I have an older macbook pro which does not suffer from this issue. In order to check whether it could have been an issue with the software/compiler/library version installed I reinstalled the same version of OS Mavericks from scratch on both laptops and did not install any  additional software and or anything which did not come directly from apple. The issue is still there and no matter what the terminal freezes on the newer macbook pro.
    Does anyone have any suggestion?
    Thanks
    John

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    clear; Fb='%s\n\t(%s)\n'; Fm='\n%s:\n\n%s\n'; Fs='\n%s: %s\n'; Fu='user %s%%, system %s%%'; PB="/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print"; A () { [[ a -eq 0 ]]; }; R () { o=; [[ r -eq 0 ]]; }; M () { find -L "$d" -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | egrep -q XML\|exec' {} {} \; -print; }; Pm () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=`sed 's/^ */   /' <<< "$o"` && printf "$Fm" "$1" "$o"; }; Pc () { o=`egrep -v '^[[:blank:]]*($|#)' "$2"`; Pm "$1"; }; Pp () { o=`$PB "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'`; Pm "$1"; }; Ps () { o=`echo $o`; [[ !     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Mac OS Mountain Lion 10.8.3 suddenly became extremely slow, need help!

    Hi everybody!
I need help with my Mac OS Mountain Lion.
Was working fine with it since it got released, but yesterday suddenly it became exteremely slow. It literally thinks for 20 minutes on any operation I'm trying to do, showing me the loading spin icon. Screen freezes, everything is not responsive at all and I just have to wait for ages till something is moved a bit and then it thinks again.
I don't see anything in particular in the logs. CPU load is low, memory using is low, all temperatures are fine. I even cleaned up the stuff with CleanMyMac app, didn't help.
Checked the hard drive with Disk Utility - didn't help either.
Please help, I'm hopeless and out of ideas what's wrong with it.
    Thanks

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing, regardless of SMART status or anything else.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

  • G5 now extremely slow - please help

I have a 3 year old IMAC G5 PowerPC that up until 2 weeks ago ran like a charm. It's now slow to a crawl during any sort of tasks. There was nothing installed or upgraded to this computer that could have caused this. So far this is what I have done to try to correct this problem ... not much but a few things. I ran SMART UTILITY .. and my HD failed the test so I thought for sure this was the culprit. Went out the next day and baught a new 500Gb drive, installed FRESH copy of TIGER on it and prayed. There was no change in speed whatsoever .. it actually seemed even slower than before. The only thing left that I can think of is possibly bad ram or worse a motherboard issue ... but woudnt the computer simly not boot up or give me errors if this was the case?
Please help .. I cant afford to take it to the APPLE store, hoping anyone have any suggestions or think they know what could be the problem here. I payed like $2000 for this 3 years ago and hate to have to throw it on the curb for garbage pickup.

I do not know how to test my ram .. what I was going to do was ask around and test it with someone else's ram .. is there a way to check it beacuse I don't know?
The hardrive did show bad sectors but I installed a new one, tested it - all fine but that didnt help the crawl. Also do not know what your asking me or heard of that CD that tests hardware , where would I find this?

  • Extremely slow internet - Help Appreciated!!

Getting a download speed of 0.73mb/s and an upload speed of equally the same value (speedtest) and with 4 other people sharing the internet it can be very tedious! (especially on the 360- being used to having a speed of 10mb/s in my previous residence).
On the best BT package available and am in the London area with the nearest exchange being bermondsey (1 stop on the tube). Prior to having called BT with a downstream speed of 1444kpbs (ADSL line status) ,  they said they would bump up the line speed to 5mb (according to the account holder in our flat) however i'm still getting a download speed of 0.73mb/s on speedtest??! however it now shows a big increase in the downstream on the bt homepage:

What gives? i've even tried different microfilters, bought an i-plate as recommended by BT but to no avail there has been no improvement whatsoever.
    cheers
    Solved!

  • Ipad 4. Running extremely slow - any help out there ?

Hi. My 64gb ipad on 6:1:3 runs sloooow. Sometimes not at all. 3 -4 bars coverage, 11gbit free space, all apps off other than the one selected, history and cache deleted. Email is about half or more speed of that of my iPhone. Safari frequently won't open. Facebook can take 20 minutes. Its like dial up. But if i use the device as wireless hotspot, the linked laptop runs fast. I've reset and reset. Any ideas ?  Am I alone on this ?  The ipad is 10 mths old.

If the content is purchased from iTunes, you would not be charged for redownloading them (at least not repurchasing them, can't speak for data charges you might incur).  Before you restore, Right click on the device in iTunes, and choose transfer purchases.  That should copy all of your purchased music to your itunes library, and prevent the need to redownload.

  • Extremely unresponsive system during i/o load

    hello,
I have been using arch for a few years now and have been very happy with it, bar for one recurring problem that i have yet to fix.
during data transfers i suffer extremely slow system response times.
i have looked in the forum already and found a few threads. but have yet to actually find a solution.
example is when i have begun a data transfer of files from one hard drive to another. of any size from 4GB to 1000GB(many files usually from 200MB to 8GB in size)
i have tried ionice on transfers but has not seemed to make system any more responsive. ive had this problem initially on NTFS mounted drives transfering between other NTFS drives.
Recently i decided to scrap NTFS as it has been a long time since i have used the drives directly on a windows machine.
I am still experiencing the problem on EXT4 drives.
    my systems configuration:
    [smelly@^archive ~]$ uname -a
    Linux ^archive 2.6.32-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Feb 23 19:43:46 CET 2010 x86_64 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3350 @ 2.66GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
Quad Core Xeon x3350(@3.6Ghz *seems to not matter if at stock or not)
    8GB DDRII RAM
    Asus Rampage Formula x48 M/B
    nVidia 9600GT
    1x250gb SATA WD WD2500AAKS-00VSA0(34GB ROOT,207GB HOME,8.2GB SWAP) - /dev/sda1,2,3
    1x1000GB SATA WD WD10EADS-00L5B1(EXT4) - /dev/sdb1
    1x1000GB SATA SG ST31000528AS(NTFS) - /dev/sdc1
    1x1000GB SATA WD WD10EACS-00D6B0(EXT4) /dev/sdd1
    1x1000GB SATA WD WD10EACS-00D6B0(NTFS) /dev/sde1
1xHotSwap SATA Bay that occasionally hosts a 1TB WD Drive.
I am currently changing over all drives to ext4 and am doing them one by one to allow for transferring data off and on again.
atm i am transferring off of one drive onto a free ext4 drive to allow me to convert the ntfs to ext4.
and am suffering this sluggishness. although i am doing the transfer in 50gb chunks. which seems to lower the pain.(although it may be in my head)
example of slowness. gnome-do takes 5-10seconds to appear where is would normally take less than ~1 second
opening pcmanfm takes around 5-10seconds also to open.(normally ~1s)
firefox may open within 10-20seconds whereas normally ~2-3s.
everything that i interact with is fairly slow. taking anywhere from 5s to 30+s to responde to my actions.
many times programs will claim unresponsive and will want to force quit. everything returns to speedy mc-speed-sys when data transfer finishes.
so hopefully anyone out there may be able to help me. as mentioned i have checked existing threads. *although i may have missed something.
i have tried swapoff(which seems to help the most, but it is still sluggish), tried different schedulers.anticipatory vs cfq, but that did little that i could tell.
transfer rates on these drives seem good. getting as high at 110MB/s read and about 80/90MB/s write.
io attempted to use ionice. but the problem still persisted. unless i was using it incorrectly..
hopefully someone out there has succeeded where i have not...
*i have had this problem since i first installed this system, i cant remember what kernel version that was on . but its been about 1 year + maybe a year and a half.
is there anybody else out there who has experienced/is experiencing the same probllems..?
*edit. using mix of xfce + lxde + compiz + gdm

For me it's Virtualbox. It uses kswapd even though I have tried to get rid of it for other processes by disabling swap.
According to iotop, in the first few seconds of launching VirtualBox kswapd0 uses about 20-40% IO. After that it goes to 0%. But some external heavy IO or something will make "Virtualbox's kswapd" go crazy and stay at 100% IO making the entire system unresponsive until Virtualbox is closed.
    kernel26 2.6.32
I have used -ck for a week when it was first out, I don't remember exactly how that went, but I'm pretty sure it had some kswapd hits as well.
EDIT: I am going to try -ck again. I also found a comment about disabling kswapd, so I did that as well - its init will now return 0 immediately (can't hurt to try, right?)
EDIT2: Don't remove kswapd! It worked well for a while but when I launched Virtualbox some really weird stuff happened.

  • Extremely Slow Universe

Our Universes are extremely slow in returning results (Crystal Reports).
    Some Facts:
Data Warehouse tables Oracle, 26 million rows, indexed by fiscal year. Report parameters include Fiscal year and Accounting Month.
We watched the SQL from the Oracle side when running a report. It appears that the Universe is not passing the FY parameters from Crystal Reports to utilize the indexing in the data tables, thus is build a massive temp file which is consuming resources and taking a great deal of time to process.
Are we correct in the way this is functioning? What can we do to optimize processing time? How may we pass the FY parameter to the SQL to utilize table indexing?
    Barry

My argument would be that the report function just fine in Crystal connecting directly to the Data Warehouse - most in just a few seconds, but the larger one in less than 5 minutes. The addition of the Universe is the factor that has slowed the reports, so it is not a Crystal problem, it is a Universe problem.
I will take your advice and post in the Crystal forum as well.
    Barry

  • I just downloaded Yosemite operating system and my computer is extremely slow but also not opening my Adobe applications.  Can anyone help?  thanks!

I just downloaded Yosemite operating system and my computer is extremely slow but also not opening my Adobe applications.  Can anyone help?  thanks!

First, tell Apple about your problems... with details... and hope for an update that fixes your slowness
Second, Yosemite sometimes has problems, often related to "default" permissions needing to be changed

  • MacBook Pro extremely slow start up, Rainbow wheel of death. HELP!

    Hi there
My Mac has just suddenly started becoming very slow. Upgraded to Mavericks 2 months ago. Had an issue at first install that was resolved with re-installation.
Has become very slow to boot, freezing at the Grey Screen with the Apple and spining cog. (Kernel I think?)
It is also very slow once logged in. Nothing has changed system wise. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I'm not too Mac savvy, so the help is very much appreciated. So here's what I've done...
Had already tried to delete CleanMyMac. So I got EasyFind, and used it to delete/destroy the rest of the files. Did the same for Roxio, Sierra Wireless and Seagate. PaceAp would have been installed with Pro Tools, which is now gone.
There are several files associated with Sierra, PaceAp and Seagate (.plist & .bom files) that I cannot delete, as I get an error saying that cannot be deleted.
Tried Verifying and Repairing Disk Permissions - All was OK
Ran through the Sleep, then Restart, then Shutdown sequence. Noticed no difference.
    Reset P-Ram.
    Reset SMC
Rebooted again, holding command + R and ran the disk utility.
First Verified the disk. Got errors:
    Invalid Directory item count
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
The volume Machintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
So I then ran Repair disk, it ran through and then said:
The volume Machintosh HD was repaired successfully.
    The battery condition is normal
      Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh):          5420
      Fully Charged:          Yes
      Charging:          No
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh):          5482
      Health Information:
      Cycle Count:          806
      Condition:          Normal
      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          0
      Voltage (mV):          12401
I then rebooted, but nothing has changed. At the moment it boots to the grey screen with the Apple logo and cogwheel. Takes about 10 mins to then go through to log in. Often the fan will start running as if the system is under load.
When I click login the rainbow wheel pops up and it freezes for a while. Then it eventually loads the home page. Takes another 10 - 20 mins to load everything, the clock and wifi connections in the top right take ages to load.
It will be extremely slow for another 20 mins or so. Cant open folders or do simple tasks without getting the rainbow wheel. Then after a little while it seems to run OK, but still sluggish.
There are no programs that are launched on startup, and I close all programs before shutting the system down. I have over 100 GB free space on the harddrive. Yet I notice in the data from EtreCheck, it states there is only 66 Gb.
Haven't used Time Machine, as my external harddrive is formatted to FAT32, and I have nowhere to store all its contents to reformat it to Mac Extended Journal.  I have backed up all the files from the system that I need.
So is there anything else I can try? Should I try a full system wipe and reinstallation? If so, how do I go about this?
I'm assuming unlike PC's, it's not just a simple task to replace the harddrive, if it is failing hardware?
I'm in rural Australia, so not readily near a Mac Support Shop. But if it is hardware, I'll just have to figure out some way to get to one.
Here's the updated info from EtreCheck, if its of any use..
Thanks again everyone the help, muchos gracias!

While 4GB may have been fine with Snow Leopard or Lion, that was 4 years ago.
If you have never done a clean install consider doing one. Backup, clone, setup a USB installer and wipe the system. Or wait for the new internal 500GB drive (so you are back to using about 50%) to do a clean install and run Setup Assistant. You would be surprised how even just that can feel and run.
RAM is pretty much a given so when you do, look at putting a 500GB SSD in there as well.
