Extremely slow wifi on an iMac

Hello,
All of a sudden my wifi connection between my 'old' iMac (Intel 3 GHz) and the modem/router is extremely slow. Other machines in the same area don't have this problem so I'm tempted to rule out a problem with the router. What didn't work to get rid of this problem:
switching Airport OFF then back ON several times
restarting the iMac
restarting the modem/router
I checked the channels, I'm the only one on channel 3 in the neighborhood. There's no encryption.
Anything else I could do ? Thanks in advance !

  • Extremely slow wifi speeds after Yosemite install

I "upgraded" to Yosemite and now my wifi speeds on this machine (iMAC) are extremely slow, like crawling. Was fine this morning before update. All other devices in the house (iphones, ipad, macbook pro) are all running normal fast speeds. Does anyone know if there is a fix for this? Missing Mavericks already.

I saw a big (huge) change in wifi speeds after Yosemite upgrade, it was more noticeable the farther away from the router I was. I moved closer to the Router and speed was back to normal.
You can check your connection by pressing at the same time alt(option) and the wifi icon (at top of menu bar), a drop down list will show the connection's stats, look for TX Rate towards the bottom. After upgrade my TX Rate dropped to 5 Mbps! I moved closer to the Router, and TX Rate improved to 146 Mbps, Safari was browsing at normal speeds again.
I read other discussions, found a suggestion to rename my location, in System Preferences - Network - WiFi, at top of panel Location, mine was named Automatic (the default). As suggested, I clicked on the arrows, selected edit, and renamed the location, name it anything you like... I restarted the computer, and luckily enough my TX  Rate at the farthest location from Router improved from 5Mbps to 39 Mbps. Still slower than before, never saw it below 80's. Don't know if the restart or the change of location name did the trick, maybe it was that Yosemite needed time to adjust to its new environment, regardless, there was some improvement.
I think there is an issue with Yosemite and WiFi that causes the TX Rate to drop more than with Mavericks as the distance from Router increases. Does not sound logical, but that is what the connection stats are saying!

  • Slow wifi speeds with imac 3.06ghz

    Hello,
So I just got my new imac 3.06ghz with 2gb of ram and I have noticed the internet speed when using wifi is extremely slow. Currently I am using a linksys wrt54G router with time warner cable. If I have my old 1st gen macbook side by side with my imac the macbook shows full signal strength on the airport and the imac shows only a few bars. If I run a speed test with them both the macbook downloads at around 1.5mb and the imac gets a blazing 51k.
Weird symptom on the imac is the blue status bar starts to load in safari, it gets about 3/4 through and then freezes and sits at 3/4 done for a few minutes. During this time images and text on the site slowly start to show up, just like if you were back on a dialup connection.
    Troubleshooting that I have done:
    reset smc and pram
    erase and install
    downloaded all available software updates
changed the channel that the router is broadcasting on
    - router security is using wep and mixed b&g
    - other devices that work fast with a wireless connection on the router are an iphone, xbox 360 and nintendo ds
    * even tried testing with win xp and bootcamp but I haven't figured out how to get windows to recognize the wireless card yet
So i'm at the point where I'm assuming this is a hardware issue, maybe the airport antenna?
    Any other suggestions?

Everyone on here that is experiencing these wifi issues with their new iMacs NEEDS to call Apple and get this elevated. I'm out of the country right now but I'm in the middle of troubleshooting this issue with Apple. I've spoken with several techs and most don't read this forum and are unaware of any widespread wifi issue with the iMacs. When I return home I will be continuing my troubleshooting with Apple on this issue. My symptoms are very similar to the ones posted in several recent threads on this issue. So far it is pointing to a software problem but I can't rule out the hardware yet. However using BootCamp I can launch Windows Vista on the same machine and surf the internet at high speed through the same Time Capsule. Also all other PC's on my home network are connecting to the Time Capsule at high speed with no hiccups. I didn't notice the problem until all the updates were loaded onto my new iMac which I received July 18th.

  • Retina display MBP has extremely slow wifi... why?

Here's the scenario for my wifi issues with my mbp retina display. I have a regular 20Mb/s down Time Warner connection that I've been using for 2 years. My roommates' computers as well as my older 2010 MBP never had slow connectivity issues. The things I'm experiencing on my MBP now are:
    - extremely slow speeds where even Google.com fails to load at times, streaming videos buffer every 15 seconds, I can't play diablo 3 anymore because it keeps giving me a time-out message (lol), my instant messenger times out so I have to reconnect.
I tried to diagnose my issue but going to any speedtest shows that my connection has a download speed of 20Mb/s which makes sense and probably has nothing to do with the slow/dc issue.
As of now, the only temporary remedy is to disconnect my wifi and reconnect (every 10-15 minutes), and I'm pretty sure no one would be content with this fix.
Is there any other diagnosis tool that I can use here to see what's going on? Anyone else have this issue?
(I've updated my software to the latest updates).
    Thanks.
(... wow even as I submit this post, my connection timed out. Luckily this forum saves my last version of the post so whew)

I'm also having the same issue. The applecare folks acted like they've never heard about it (seriously?) and had me do some stupid things like deleting all the other networks out of the list but the one I was using (she actually tried to tell me that the computer would be "confused" by 5 computers in my known network list).
I just took it to the genius bar, and they ran diagnostics on it, and it's working just fine. In their store, using their network, I was getting 12 mbps. At my mom's house (who doesn't pay for the fastest speeds), I was getting 9 mbps. Here at my house, where every other computer (including my 2007 macbook) is getting 20 mbps, I am getting LESS THAN ONE.
My shiny new computer is completely unusable. It has nothing to do with bluetooth. It has something to do with an incompatibility with the new router my husband bought two days ago (Linksys E1200). Before that, I think it was okay. I am going to have him switch back to the old router and see if that solves anything.
But SERIOUSLY, Apple? I'm about to send it back, too. I am VERY disappointed. Oh, and when the wireless radio is going nuts, my battery life suffers tremendously. I am getting nowhere near 7 hours. More like 2. And that's with bluetooth turned off, and the screen dimmed.
Oh, and an addition, I am running Mountain Lion. My computer just arrived last Monday. I've already installed all system updates. I even had them re-install Mountain Lion at the Apple Store. I think my little Betsy is going to have to be replaced. :-(

  • Extremely slow wifi

I have had the iPhone 4 for a day now and the only fault i have picked up on is that of the wifi speed. I can connect to the wifi and within 2 minutes of connecting the safari speed is very quick, however after not long the wifi is incredibly slow and can take up to 10 seconds to load google. I have tried resetting it but it just does the same again any ideas?

I've been looking for feedback on this since the new software was released. All our mobile devices that were upgraded to iOS4, an ipod touch, an iphone 3GS, and now my iphone 4 which comes with that software, all have much slower wifi download speeds than before the upgrade. I'm kind of anal about running speed tests on different networks to see what their speeds are so I'm familiar with what I usually get on these networks. My sole non iOS4 device, my ipad, does not have this nor any other wifi issue. In fact running speed tests on the speedtest.net app with my ipad side by side with the other devices my results are consistently 30-50% slower on those than the ipad on all networks.
I don't have weak signals or connection issues on those devices but I believe there is definitely something different about the way wifi is handled on this software.

  • X200 - extremely slow wifi

    Hi
Anyone got any ideas to how increase the speed of the wifi on my x200?
Just spend 10 min downloading 2mb - with on my other laptop takas about 30 sec - same connection..
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    Possibly irrelevant, but ...
With my X200s (and in general), I found that XP WiFi transfers are normal, but Vista and W7 speeds are incredibly slow - and sometimes fail completely.    I don't know what causes this, but if you're using Vista or W7, it may be the same cause.

  • Extremely slow Wifi on iPhone 3GS

Since upgrading from the iPhone 3G to a 3GS I've come to realise that the wifi performance is very poor compared to earlier models.
I am talking about measured speed, rather than signal performance, for signal performance the 3GS actually seems slightly better than my 3G - eg it will connect to a base station from further away than the 3G, but when both are in range the 3GS is MUCH slower.
Using the speedtest.net app on a 16Mbit ADSL2+ connection (which gives a measured performance of 14.5Mbit on a Macbook pro on the SAME wifi network) I get the following results:
    iPod Touch 1st Gen:
    Download: 7448 kbps
    Upload: 923 kbps
    iPhone 3G:
    Download: 5938 kbps
    Upload: 859 kbps
    iPhone 3GS:
    Download: 1029 kbps
    Upload: 316 kbps
Clearly a big descrepancy here, with the iPod Touch almost 6 times faster in throughput, and the iPhone 3G not far behind.
This is on an 802.11g network using a netgear router and WPA-PSK, but I have also tried an Airport Express with no significant change.
Is anyone else noticing this problem ?
    Regards,
    Simon

No, it's definately connected to wifi, besides, I'm not on AT&T as I'm not in the USA
I've tested it in airplane mode as well to be sure it really is connecting by wifi.
The way I see it, it's either a hardware fault in my specific phone, or a driver/firmware issue in the 3GS - one of the things that changed from the 3G to the 3GS is that there is a different wifi chipset, and it may be that the drivers are still immature.
    Waiting patiently on 3.1....

  • Extremely slow wifi on my macbook past few days

I have had nothing, but ridiculously slow internet for about a week now. I have no idea what it is. I've reset my router and nothing. I've checked many other devices on the router (my ipod, my sisters macbook pro, my dads pc) and they are all getting the normal wifi connection....but mine is just about as slow as dialup. I have a macbook white (2008). I've done hours of searching, both on google and here and I can't seem to find anything relevant. I'm starting to think it began around the 10.6.6 update, but I can't be sure. I reset my pram and that did nothing..
    Anybody have any ideas?

    Hi,
    Try changing the Airport Channel.
    Open AirPort Utility (Applications/Utilities)
Select the device you’re setting up on the left and then click Manual Setup. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose a new channel from the Channel pop-up menu.
If that doesn't help, go to /Library/Preferences. Move all the files in the System Configuration folder to the Trash, restart the Mac.
Since it's just your Mac, if changing the channel nor trashing those files doesn't help, make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.*
Probably a good idea to check the startup disk for problems also. Launch Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities). Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the FirstAid tab. Click: Verify Disk. If Disk Utility reports problems, you will need to boot from your install disc to make repairs; instructions here.

  • Airport (express) extremely slow wifi and ethernet speeds! Please help!

    Hello there,
I am having some difficulty with my new airport express. Basically I got it to use while at university where they only have ethernet. It's like a hotel, once you connect to it you log in via a web browser.
The issue is I plug it in, set it up to create a new wireless network, everything connects to it fine (macbook, ipad etc) but then the speed is HORRIBLE.
I did a speed test on my iPhone (over wifi) and the down speed was about 10x slower than what it was connecting my laptop straight to the ethernet port on the wall.
The laptop when plugged in via ethernet to the airport base station was even slower! Speedtest couldn't even load itself.
I used to use my macbook pro and just share the connection with other devices I had, but I didn't like leaving it on near 24/7.
I'm failing to understand why my macbook pro shares the internet fine with other devices, but the airport express cannot do the same (it shares it, but SUPER slow).
Any tips would be appreciated. I've come here as a close to last resort .
In bridge mode it shares the internet with any one device absolutely fine as well.
Hopefully someone can help me out!
    Thanks,
    Tan

Ha that's highly unlikely they can tell you have a router don't worry!
Right so I figured it out after numerous attempts!! My internet is now super fast to all devices and no slow issues at all!
What I did was to change the settings for router mode to 'DHCP and NAT' and although the airport came up with an error about double NAT, this is actually what we want. So you can click the ignore button.
By changing it to NAT the router appears as one device on the uni network and the devices that connect to it are monitored soley by the router so they don't really appear on the uni network. This means that the connection that was previously split to three devices through one point on the uni network is now only going to 'one' device (router) which is then splitting the connection itself and so it's much faster!
Hope that makes sense I know I haven't explained it very well...
I've left all other settings as default in case you were wondering.
    Good luck!

  • Extremely slow WiFi on Macbook, but fast on Windows, any suggestions?

I recently posted a topic that the WiFi on my MacBook didn't work at all. I overcame this problem by purchasing a new router. It now works, but as the topic title suggests, it is very slow. The router I purchased was a Netgear WGR614v9, which works brilliantly with my Windows laptop running Vista.
Could this me a faulty AirPort card? or do I need specific settings enabled on my router? I would be very grateful if you helped.
    Many thanks.

Try setting the router to broadcast the wireless signal in G only rather than mixed mode which seems to be the default settings.
This finally fixed my wireless issue after reading another thread here. I hope this helps.

  • Extreme WLAN/Wifi Probleme mit iMac

    Hey zusammen!

  • Slow wifi only on iMac

First of all, I have no idea where to post this question, so any redirect ideas are appreciated.
Time Warner Internet, with LinkSys router.  On iPad,15.5 Mbps, but on granny iMac (circa 2007, running Lion) get between .52 and .78 Mbps.  Can't work from home, time-outs causing problems.
This is probably a File Vault issue, but I'm not sure -- when I upgraded to Lion, ended up with Legacy File Vault which I cannot turn off or uninstall b/c not enough HD space.  500GB HD, 136GB available; File Vault wants 243.7GB free, which is probably impossible to do.
How likely is it that File Vault is causing the problems?  Do I have any options here, other than replacing the iMac?
    Thanks.

Most often BitTorrent, iCloud, Dropbox, or some other cloud-data application is involved in cases of mysterious bandwidth use by a Mac. If you use iCloud, uncheck at least Photo Stream and Documents & Data in its preference pane and see whether there's any change. If you use third-party network backup or file-sync software, disable that. If you use a torrent client, remove it.
Otherwise, if you're running OS X 10.9 or later, you can see which processes are most active on the network.
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select All Processes from the View menu, if not already selected, and also select the Network tab.
Click the heading of the Sent Bytes column in the process table to sort the entries by bandwidth usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Repeat with the Rcvd Bytes column.

  • MacBook Air slow wifi at times, unreliable internet

    i have the 2012 macbook air.version 10.8.5
it works super good HOWEVER, sometimes my wifi and internet can get really slow. I doubt its my new AC airport extreme because the internet on every other device in my house works perfectly.
its just my macbook air that at very random times, will seem to have extremely slow wifi. like it will take 30 seconds to load google. and i've tried multiple sites and it still doesn't work.
this will happen about every week or so for a couple of hours. when i connect to a different network, my mac will no longer have any internet speed issues
is anyone else having these problems?

    Power Cycle
Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
    Restart the computer.
    Empty Caches
    Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.

  • Network connection extremely slow after snow leopard upgrade

I should first state that my son's new Intel Mac Mini (2009 model) is working fine without any issues - it is on the "n" band. My wife's macbook (on Leopard) and my Thinkpad are continuing to work fine - both connecting to the "g" band of my Simultaneous Dual band AEBS.
On my 2008 model mac mini, the installation went thru fine, but the network connection is extremely slow - it is connecting using the "g" band. Even when I launch the Airport utility, it takes a while to locate the AEBS and then when I click on "Manual Setup", it takes a very very long time to read the configuration. This tells me that the airport interface on the mac mini has some driver issue.
I tried all the suggestions given in other threads (listed below), but none of them worked.
    1. Created a new network location and rebooted
    2. Trashed the com.apple.airport.airportutility.plist and rebooted
    3. Rebooted countless number of times - illogical, but that kicks in when I can't find a solution.
It is past midnight here (20miles from Apple headquarter). Going to wait for another 30minutes. After that, I will use SuperDuper to install my Leopard back on my mac mini which I had cloned before starting the installation.
Appreciate any suggestions - I am open to any prayer solution as well! If not, the Snow Leopard family pack is going back to the Apple store on Monday.
Just saw at engadget: "On a 17-inch unibody we were putting through the paces, the WiFi inexplicably has gone out and we have yet to get it working again."

Some more info about my setup:
    *Simultaneous Dual band AEBS:*
    Radio Mode: 802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11b/g
    Radio Channel Selection: Manual - 161 (5GHz), 6(2.4GHz)
    *Airport Express:*
Wireless mode: Extend a wireless network
Allow wireless clients checked under the name of the network (same as for AEBS).
Both are WPA/WPA2 Personal security. And both the routers were upgraded to 7.4.2 firmware this morning with the hope that it will help.
    *N Devices (both working fine):*
    Apple TV 40GB
2009 Model Mac Mini upgraded to Snow Leopard - working perfectly.
    *G Devices:*
    Thinkpad running WinXP
    Dell Laptop running WinXP
    Acer Netbook running WinXP
    iPod Touch
    iPhone 3G
    Linksys webcam
_All of the above are working fine_.
+2008 model Mac mini -+ upgrade to Snow Leopard shows extremely slow wifi connection that it is unusable. It takes 20min to load apple homepage. When I boot from the clone of my Leopard lying on my external drive, it works perfectly.
I compared the settings between all the tabs of Network-->Airport-->Advanced and they are identical between Snow Leopard and Leopard mode except that SL doesn't have the "Apple Talk" tab.
Appreciate any help to debug this.
