Eye Dropper, Colour Palette and Adjustment Layers?

Hi guys,
I tend to need to change the colour of various items in images (usually because I want something in the image to be a corporate colour.
My old technique used to be something along this line:
Open image
Ensure the colour palette is visible
Convert to CMYK (or not)
Create curves or channel mixer adjustment layer
Eye dropper the image on a pixel I wanted to change
Manipulate the adjustment layer and watch the colour feedback from the colour palette
When the colour palette said rughly the right colour values--job done!
My problem is, whenever I eye dropper the image it tells me the current colour; but when I go back to manipulating the adjustment layer the colour palette nop longer gives me live colour value feedback like it used to in CS3. This change occured when the Adjustments Palette was introduced
This has been driving me crazy ever since CS4 came out (infact, I ignored CS4 because of it).
Is there anyway to restore live feedback???
Please, please, PLEASE help meeeeeeeeeeeee...!  :'o/

Try something like this:
1. Make the curves adjustment layer
2. Click on the curve adjustment layer thumbnail in the layers panel
(not the layer mask, but the curve icon to the left of the layer mask)
3. Manually select the eyedrooper tool in the toolbox and ctrl click in the image to set the
point or points on the curve.
When you adjust the curve from inside the curves panel, you should be able to see the
changes in the color panel.
For the channel mixer, click on the channel mixer icon and then click inside the image with the eyedropper tool
and you should be able to see the changes in the color panel when you move the sliders.

  • Why use layer masks and adjustment layers?

I've been using PSE and CS successfully for years.
One thing I have never understood is: why use layer masks and adjustment layers, instead of simply creating a copy of the subject layer (the one I want to make changes to) and experimenting with that?  It's quick (Ctrl-J), I can do it as many times as I want, I'm not affecting my Background layer.  If I like the changes, I can keep them.  I can switch the copy on and off to compare with the Background layer.  I can do any type of blend or combination I desire.  I can insert Gradient layer(s), select any part of the copy and (Ctrl-J) create a new layer containing only the selected part.  I can adjust size, rotate, do anything.
It almost seems that "layer mask" and "adjustment layer" are mainly another layer of terminology; can anyone explain (preferably in 50 words or less) how they are intrinsically different from or superior to working with copies of the Background layer?  What can be done with them that can't be done simply using copies of the Background layer?

Here's a very basic example of the advantage of using a layer mask.
I have this picture of a sunflower and I want to convert the background to black & white, leaving just the flower in color.  I duplicated the Background layer, converted it to B&W and proceeded to use the Eraser to uncover the flower color. But I made a mistake and erased outside the flower.  There is no way to correct this other than deleting the layer and starting again.
Now let's use a layer mask on the B&W layer. Set the Foreground/Background colors to the defaults black/white. Using the Brush tool paint on the mask with black to reveal the color.  Here I painted too far, revealing a green leaf in the background.  No need to start over.  Simply switch to white and paint the excess to convert back to the B&W.
Tip: while painting you can type "X" to toggle between black and white.
You could also select the flower using the various selection tools and then fill the selection with black. If it turns out the selection was not 100% accurate you can then fine-tune the result by painting on the mask with black or white as necessary.

  • I need to know how to "join" my actions palette and my layers palette so they are side-by-side while I edit?

I would like for my actions palette and my layers palette to be visible when editing. I had it like that before and my computer got a little screwy and now I can't get it to do it again. Please help!

Grab the Actions panel and hover it over the left hand side of the Layers panel until you see a Blue line and then let go of the mouse button.

  • Gradient Colour Goes To Eye Dropper Colour Picker?

    Hello,
Whenever I try to edit the gradient colour by clicking on the colour bar itself (second in from the left, http://prntscr.com/6vfu4u) it comes up with the eye dropper tool instead of the normal colour picker.
(It changes to this once I click on that colour box to change the gradient; http://prntscr.com/6vfuj3. It also does the same thing through Layer > Blending Options > Gradient Overlay)
Any idea why or how I can get back to the normal colour picker?
    Thanks!

Wow I feel stupid, the colour picker window was opening on my second monitor which was turned off -.-

  • Perspective corner pin and adjustment layers

    Hi,
I am sure this is and easy one for all you more expereinced guys out there... I am trying to adjust a piece of footage that has a very blown out window in it, I was thinking I can simply motion track the window using the perspective corner pin tool, then apply the tracking data on to an adjustment layer that has the color adjustments I require. However as soon as I apply the tracking data the adjustment layer will shrink down a copy of the layer underneith into the tracked shape and turn everything else outside of it black. What s the right approach? Many thanks in advance!

That's what it does - any track produces coordinates relative to the source footage dimensions. Not sure where you are having problems, so let me try to recap this step for step.
    Create a comp
    Add footage
    Create a comp sized solid
    Do a corner pin track
Apply the track to the solid
    Select solid
Do layer --> pre-compose, choose to move all attributes
    Go back to source comp
Turn on adjustment layer switch on pre-comped layer
    Add whatever effects you want
The effects will now only appear inside the tracked area as it effectively acts as a matte for them by ways of being an adjustment layer.

  • Why does my RGB colour palette keep converting to CMYK, even though my document setup is RGB?

I have been sent some icons from another department in my company. They used the CMYK colour palette and saved the files as eps. I'm now traying to transfer these designs into my own document - new and setup as RGB. I've noticed now that it has converted back to CMYK.
I have created another blank document (RGB) and tested the two palettes side by side and they work just fine, but when I copy and paste the graphics it converts everything to CMYK.

Yep you're right that they are always global, I forgot that option isn't available when it is spot - so I'm not sure why you asked.
Yes I know that spot can be any colour mode - that's why I have the two colour palettes.
These have always worked perfectly before as spot and they make working with them much quicker and easier (usually), so I'm not sure why you think they don't make sense.

  • Photoshopology Quizz: Introduction of Adjustment layers

They appeared in Photoshop for the first time in version... 7 ?
    Thanks

I agree, high bit depth and ACR, along with warp/liquify and Smart Objects all deserve a place in the pantheon of serious developments. But they all pale into insignificance compared to actions and adjustment layers.
In Photoshop 4 you could set up action that would render text and vectors on large scale documents and automatically sesize them to the target use displacement maps with actions to quickly tweak alpha channels to create subtle distortions, in those days replacing liquify and warp customize actions do almost anything available with layer styles etc.
All with the power afforded by actions. A LOT of window dressing since then - how many interface "enhancements" have we had?
The strength of the application we have today, and its consequent massive revenue to Adobe each year, really rests on a few extremely clever individuals who were working on the app at that time.

  • Photo Filter adjustment layer and eye dropper

    Hi all
I am sure there is a simple solution to this but here goes (BTW I am using a Windows 7 machine and a variety of versions of PS).
Somebody showed me an interesting way to address color cast in photos and he showed my using CS2. I tried it at home on Photoshop CC, CS6 and CS5.5 with no joy. I then tried it on CS2 (at home - so the same machine with the other versions on) and it worked as I was shown.
    The method is this.
Load the image that has a color cast.
Select Adjustment layer and add a Photo Adjustment layer
Select "Color" rather than one of the pre-defined filters and click on the Color Box to activate the eye dropper.
Using the eye dropper select a part of the picture that is closest to the cast that you want to remove
Then in the "a" and "b" boxes in the dialogue box make the numbers the opposite of what they are (For example if the number is 32 change it to -32, if the number is -32 change it to 32).
Then click on OK to change the color.
Then you should be able to use the density slider to increase or decrease the colour cast.
Now all of that works fine if I am using CS2 - but if I try it in CC, CS6 or CS5.5 when I try to use the eye dropper I cant select any colors in my picture. No matter what I click on I get White, it will not pick up the color.
I am sure I am doing something wrong, but I cant for the life of me think what!
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    John

Rkelly - Thanks for that - it worked.
Not wishing to sound un-gracious. But how come I dont need to use Ctrl if I apply the effect via the "image/adjustment/photofilter" route but do need Ctrl if I try to apply the same thing via an adjustment layer?
It isnt a huge problem now that you have supplied me with the solution.... I just want to understand as much as I can.
    Cheers

  • Photoshop CS6 Info Palette & Adjustment Layers

I have searched but can't find an answer to my question so I thought this may be the best place to ask.
When I am using adjustment layers in PS 13.0.3 (mountain lion), I notice that the info palette is not giving me a before and after readout of the adjustment.
e.g. I add a curves adjustment layer and remove some cyan from the highlight end, I can see on screen that cyan is removed but the info palette gives me 2 readings, both the same. This can make it difficult if I want to remove an exact amount of colour. I have the info palette is set up the same as every previous version of photoshop I have used, 1st reading actual colour, 2nd reading cmyk. I know this is a bit difficult to explain so I have included an image showing the palette, CS6 on the left and CS5 on the right, same image, same coordinates. CS5 is showing that 4% cyan has been removed, was 18% now 14%, CS6 is showing what it is now.
I work in prepress and do a lot of colour correction for books and magazines so I need to know the before & after readings. Is this a bug/feature??

I'm having this same problem as well.
Two of our macs have this problem and two do not.
The two macs with this problem are:
    Mac Pro
    2 x 2.93 Ghz 6-Core intel Xeon
    96 GB 1333 HZ DDR3 ECC
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    OSX Lion 10.7.5
The two macs that work correctly are:
    Mac Pro
    2 x 3.06 Ghz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    96 GB 1333 HZ DDR3 ECC
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
    OSX Lion 10.7.5
Does anyone know what might cause this problem?

  • Gradients and the eye dropper tool

When you're editing a gradient within the shape (as opposed to in the Gradients palette), is there any way to use the eye dropper tool to sample an existing color? In-shape gradient editing (or whatever Adobe calls it) is useless without the eye dropper.

Hi, I came looking for an answer to this very question... but now I have figured out a way to do what you want to do.
    1. Select the object you want to make into a gradient and make it so... it'll be the dreaded white to black
    2. Select the colour that has the fil that you want to use for one end of the gradient
    3. Now Select the gradient and notice that the fill you previously selected is in the "last color" box in the color tab group.
    4. Now drag the color from the "last color" box to the gradient color box
    5. repeat as necessary... click color, then gradient, then drag the previous colour to the gradient color box.
    Hope this helps :-)

  • CS6 Info Palette and Group Adjustment Layer Bug

The Photoshop CS6 Info Palette is not showing before and after in Grouped Adjustment Layers.

    A little frustrated by this.

I am also having this issue.  It works on my MacBook, but not my iMac.  The only difference I see is that my MacBook is running 13.0 Extended, but the problem iMac is running 13.0.4 Standard.  On the problem computer I have tried logging in as a new user (clean prefs) and the issue still exists.  I've tried changing profiles, preview and proof settings with no difference.  I've also tried different eyedropper settings (current layer, all layers, etc) with no difference.  If I drag the correction layer out of the group, the readings show correctly.  If I move them back INTO the group, they only show the corrected values. Very odd.
    Problem computer specs:
    Photoshop CS6 Standard (13.0.4 x64)
    iMac 21.5" 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
    16 GB 1600MHz DDR3
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 512M
    OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.3
    Working computer specs:

  • Remove CS5 Adjustment Layers as Palettes?

I know when CS5 first came out even the standard modal windows for Levels, Curves etc. were housed in a Palette and that blew my mind with hatred. It seems they've fixed that but are still limiting Adjustment Layers to the same Palette fate.
Is there any way on earth to switch back to the standard modal type window for Adjustment Layers? Forcing us to use them in a Palette window makes me want to go get a root canal.
Any help would be imensively appriciated. I've had CS5 for over a year and simply cannot use it due to this and some other issues.

Your first couple of sentences are incorrect.  Nothing's been "fixed" since Photoshop CS5 first came out.  Image - Adjust - Curves, for example, has always been a modal dialog.
Regarding the panel-based adjustments...  Have you tried to pan the image while in a modal dialog by pressing the space bar?  Oops.  Sure, the panel is a little different than the dialog, but we've all had to get used to it.  The ADJUSTMENTS panel was introduced not in CS5, but way back in CS4, by the way.
What is it that's bothering you about the panel?

  • Eye dropper tool and opacity

    Hi,
    I have a background set at 40% of C:9/M:6/Y:17/K:0.
I want the eye dropper tool to tell me what the CMYK breakdown of this TINT. It keeps telling me that it is C:9/M:6/Y:17/K:0 - but this is the breakdown of the 100% colour.
It did it correctly for me once and it does it for my colleague. I have checked my eyedropper settings against his and they are the same - everything checked.
From this one time that it worked I know that the CMYK breakdown of the tint is (rounded up) 4/2/7/0. But I can not replicate this result.
I have attached a screen grab showing my eyedropper settings as well as the BG tints.
    I am on Ilustrator CS3.
    I hope someone can help.
    Thanks

So.  You have a global swatch, that you apply to an object and drop down to a XX% tint and now you are looking for the actual CMYK breakdown of that tint, correct?
When you select your XX% tinted object and look at the color panel.  Looks like this, right?
When you go to the flyout menu and select cmyk from it, it should change to showing the CMYK breakdown.
This should work for global CMYK swatches as well as spot colors.
