Eyedropper bug

hi everyone,
it seems Photoshop's eyedropper or CMS has a problem. I have attached a sample .psd file so that everyone can reproduce the error.
Just open it and switch Layer1's blending mode from Screen to Linear Dodge. You will notice that as a result the gray pixels will visually get slightly brighter, but the eyedropper will show RGB=(38,38,38) in both cases! (you can measure anywhere in the image's center, for example the pixel (X=51,Y=35), that's the point where I measured for the screenshots below).
The point is: any pixel identified by Photoshop as RGB=(38,38,38) should ALWAYS look the same, not sometimes brighter and sometimes darker.
If you don't trust your eyes (which can fall pray to an optical illusion), just open my screenshots in any application with an eyedropper (even Windows Paint will do I guess) and compare the values for the gray area (just make sure the eyedropper's sample size is 1x1 (point sample)). The values will differ.
Or if you don't want to rely on my screenshots, just make your own.
To provide for additional measurement, I also used an on-screen color-picker utility named "ColorCop" which displays the screen pixel's actual RGB values at the current cursor position in real time. The recorded values are obviously the same as can be retrieved from the screenshots shown below, i.e. RGB=(42,42,42) for screenshot 1 and RGB=(43,43,43) for screenshot 2.
NOTE 1: The issue is unrelated to any eventual rounding errors resulting from the blending modes and multiple layers. To prove this, you can flatten the image (menu: layer >> flatten image). Still the same problem.
NOTE 2: For those of you familiar with colour management, the actual values retrieved from your screenshots depend on the color profile currently associated with your monitor. This accounts for the differences between RGB=(38,38,38) and the values in the screenshots (in my case 42,42,42 and 43,43,43). Your values will obviously differ. I also noted that if you choose sRGB as your monitor profile, the error cannot be reproduced.
settings:
colour picker sample size: 1x1
measured document pixel: X=51, Y=35
measured screen pixel: X=602, Y=510
Adobe Photoshop: CS3
document colour space: (irrelevant, sRGB)
.psd document in question: attached
screenshot 1 (RGB=38,38,38 shown as darker gray):
screenshot 2 (RGB=38,38,38 shown as lighter gray):

still looks like a simple rounding error to me, when looking in CMYK you get 71/65/64/70 for screen and 71/65/64/69 for Linear Dodge

Is there any legit reason why this might happen (I can't think of any) before I submit a bug report?

    >Perhaps it happens because the document color space is RGB.
    Exactly right, Gernot.
I was able to replicate the 'problem' by using RGB mode. Eyedropper readings within the masked object are 19.61 / 39.61 / 59.61 / 0.39.
Differences between my readings and the OP's might be caused by different color space settings.
Or, it might be a version-dependent thing.

  • Eyedropper: Bug or Feature

    This seems like bug:
When i put something in group and want to sample it with eyedropper tool with: "All layers exlude Adjustment layer" sampling isn't avalaible, video HERE

yeah, that does not seem right to me.
If I put an Adjustment Layer above the Group, eyedropper seams to work as expected. But  even with adjustment layer in Group, it does not work like I think it should . Does not seem to matter if Group blend is set to Normal or Pass Through.
Maybe someone from Adobe can comment on expected behavior for the new Eyedropper settings in CS6.

  • Eyedropper bug / annoyance Illustrator CC

    Hi everyone,
I believe this is something which seems to have happened in the last couple of weeks.
I've recorded a video of my issue to try and show you guys what my problem is.
Basically, I have my shield on the left which is a shape with a fill and stroke. I'd like to select the wifi signal's style, by selecting the eyedropper. The wifi signal is a group made up of three shapes.
For whatever reason, my styling completely gets removed, as you can see here:
    http://monosnap.com/file/hQayYPlpaj4c7zh6mBEIfCknlZ13xn#
In my eyedropper settings, I have all the boxes checked.
This is frustrating me like you wouldn't believe. Any ideas?

Thank you Larry.  I just submitted this bug report pasted below at the link you provided.
    ******BUG******
Illustrator CC 17.0.0 *always* merges layers when opening a DXF file, even if you have the "Merge Layers" unchecked.
    1. Open a DXF file that contain multiple layers in Illustrator CC 17.0.0
    2. Uncheck the "Merge Layers" button.
    3. Click OK.
Results:  It has merge all the layers into one layer.
Expected results: It should open with multiple layers preserved.  Illustrator CS6 works properly.

  • Fix Dreamweaver CS4 Color Eyedropper Bug

Dreamweaver locks up when using the eyedropper from the CSS
panel to select/match a color from any object in Design view.
Easiest to explain by describing a split view. Dreamweaver locks
every time -- when placing cursor in a background color code in a
style sheet, then going to the CSS panel and selecting the
background color swatch for that style, then with the eyedropper,
touching a color in the Design view part of the split screen.
Dreamweaver CS3 never locked up when performing these same
steps. Dreamweaver CS4, locks up whether selecting a color in a
bitmap or a CSS background color that is displayed in the Design
split view. Means I have to go to Fireworks to color match, and if
the color I want is in a range of a gradient, I have to make the
gradient a bitmap before selecting the spot with the eyedropper. I
even had some difficulty in Fireworks, as the selection wouldn't
show up in the color panel when I touched the bitmap with the
eyedropper. I could see the color code in the popup color selector
and clicked there for the color to show up in Fireworks' color
    panel.
Kind of a hassle...would be nice to get an update fix for
    this.

  • Color adjustment eyedropper bug

    Hi there.
When using the color adjustments in Aperture I've found that the eyedropper doesn't work as it should.  Everytime I try to select a colour using the eyedropper it selects red.  This is regardless of which of the 6 color spots I can select from.
Has anyone else found this issue?

The Color adjustment Brick comprises six separate adjustment panes.  (To see them, click the "Switch to Expanded View" icon -- third from the right of the three at the top right of the Brick.)  Each pane effects one hue.  The hues can be individually selected -- and can be _any_ hue.  The Brick defaults to evenly distributed hues, RGB interleaved with YCM.
With one of the six hue positions selected, you can click the eyedropper and set the hue for that pane of the Brick.  If you click a red hue, it will set that pane the hue of the red you clicked.
Are you clicking colors other than red and having the selected hue show as a red?

  • Adobe qt 32 server keeps crashing on CC 2014

My project plays fine for a period of time and then suddenly there is nothing playing in the player monitor.  Program won't close completely and I have to Force Quit and restart.  Works okay for a while and then the same thing. Been on the phone with Adobe for … can't even recall how many hours so far.  They keep saying they  will check into it and call me back.. even recorded my screen while it froze and so far they never get back to me.  Meanwhile, clients are frustrated, I'm going crazy trying to work and restart without the client knowing what is up… They call this tech support but I call it not rear for the professional environment.   If Adobe wants to be a professional system for professional editors, they better step up the support and realize that with thousands of dollars on the line and project deadlines, this kind of thing can't keep happening.
The last tech pulled up my Activity monitor and saw that the Adobe QT 32 server.exe was freezing.  Something to do with the components and how files are played through Quicktime.
He tried several things but so far, the problem hasn't' been fixed.  I am beyond frustrated.
ANyone have any ideas or has anyone else gone through a similar problem?

Thanks, Mark, I'm glad that Dynamic Linking issues are on the bug fix list for the next update! Also good to see that you guys caught the eyedropper bug, too.
When I launch Premiere CC2014, I can see on the Activity Monitor that both instances of 'Adobe QT32 Server' start, then turn to "Not Responding".  These are issues that could be related to this (or not):
•Hangs up/freezes, especially when Dynamic linking to AE
•Picture will not play, although media shows green bar (rendered)
•Frequent “Media Pending” or “Media Missing”, or just shows up black, although media shows green bar (rendered)
    •QT32 crash/not responding
•Export to Adobe Audition: never leaves ‘preparing’ stage (rebooted cured this)
•Hangs/crashes on certain plug-ins, esp. FXFactory
•When exporting to AME queue, one or both programs often crash.
•”Not Responding” when trying to quit unresponsive program
Sorry to hijack this thread, but I'd appreciate any feedback or further suggestions that you may have. Btw, I already dumped Soundflower...no effect.

  • Photoshop CC2014.2, Mac OS X: Bug with eyedropper and adjustment layer?

    Hi,
I am constantly running into a weird behavior that I have a hard time not to classify as a bug.
Can someone please verify this and instruct me where to place a proper bug report?
    How to repeat:
    - Create a new document (RGB, white background)
    - Use the brush and paint a desaturated colored area
    - add a levels adjustment layer to make it lighter or add contrast
    - go back to the paint layer
    - set the eyedropper to only sample the active layer
    - Use the eyedropper to sample the color
    - Paint a new area
= The sampled color gets modified by the adjustment layer
    - Turn off the adjustment layer
    - redo sample and paint
= The adjustment layer will still affect the eyedropper tool
    - Delete the adjustment layer
    - redo sample and paint
= The adjustment layer will still affect the eyedropper tool even if it's removed!
    - Restart photoshop and load the document
    - redo sample and paint
= Now it works normally again.
There is one other way to get it back to normal and that is to reset the adjustment layer before deleting or turning it off.

  • Eyedropper tool bug in CS6

I'm using Illustrator CS6 16.0.3 on Windows and have problem with eyedropper. When i hold shift and try to assign color from somewhere the foreground swatch is updated but the color of selected object itself stays the same. I work with photoreferences and it brings me a lot of discomfort so i'm planning to revert to CS5 until it's resolved.
I know that this is bug of the program itself and it was fixed on Mac several months ago with 16.0.4 update but the Windows update is still missing so the question is: when are we going to recieve this so much needed update?
    Seriously, Adobe, you're failing me.

I can ya'll exactly what's going on here, and yes, I think it's a dumb CS6 bug. Never happened to me before CS6. You might have noticed that sometimes the eyedropper tool works just fine and picks up the colors, and sometimes it doesn't. Here's the answer.
The eyedropper tool wont apply colors to groups of shapes, even if there is only one shape in that group. Don't ask me why, but that's the reason. Took me a while to find out. And it seems that if you use the shape building tool in any way it makes the object become a group... and then the eyedropper tool doesn't work properly again.
There are three basic temporary fixes:
    - Go into your group and change elements individually
    - Use the direct selection tool and select objects to color them individually
    - "Ungroup" the object (even if it's only one object!) and eyedrop to your hearts content
They take a bit more time, but at least you can get the colors you want.

  • InDesign Eyedropper Tool Problem or Bug?

I am running InDesign CS3 on Snow Leopard.
Issue: I working merrily on my way in a project when all of a sudden the Eyedropper Tool blitzes out on me by not copying text attributes correctly.
Though I cannot replicate the problem at will it happens maybe once every two weeks or so without warning.
100% of the time, when it happens, the text that I want to apply the attributes to retains the original font but an black outline is applied. It makes me think that I inerrantly toggled some control, but cannot what.
    I reboot—nothing
Note:  I do use stylesheets and manage them well.
When I create a new document the eyedropper works fine. Maybe it in inherent in a worked over document?

  • Photoshop CS6 erratic eyedropper cursor bug

Late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro, running OS X 10.7.4 Lion, and Photoshop CS6 13.0.
In Photoshop CS6, I have noticed that when using my Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet, the eyedropper tool will very often (almost always) display erratic behaviour when using the brush tool and pressing Alt to switch to the eyedropper tool temporarily. The "source location" (the pixel which is being sampled), along with the color picker ring will rapidly "vibrate", making it difficult to choose a precise color. The eyedropper cursor will NOT vibrate, however, showing that the problem isn't with the pointing device.
When switching directly to the eyedropper, the issue does not happen, it only happens when pressing Alt while using the Brush tool, as far as I can tell.
It also does not seem to happen when using the MacBook Pro's built-in trackpad.
Please see this screen recording, and read the description:

Here is a thread about a similar issue, though I cannot tell if this is the same problem, as I have not had this issue with CS5 with the same exact setup:

  • Eyedropper not working in index color on Mac

I recently changed from MAC 9.1 and photoshop 7 to a 24" IMAC and photoshop CS3. I have 3 gig ram -- operating system 10.4.10. I can't get the eyedropper to work in index color in CS3. I've talked with someone else who has a PC and it is working on the PC. I called Adobe and it is working on their PC's too. I went to the Apple Store and it isn't working on their MAC. So I am assuming either the eyedropper isn't working on the MAC or I don't know how to get it to work in CS3.
Can someone please help -- thanks.

    Carol,
That was indeed helpful, Carol. Thank you.
I printed out your post and followed the steps you outline.
The eyedropper in the Color Table works just as expected on my computer. (See specs below)
Just to make sure, I opened the Help viewer and followed the instructions therein:
Color / Converting between color modes
    Customize indexed color tables
The Color Table command lets you make changes to the color table of an indexed-color image. These customization features are particularly useful with pseudocolor imagesimages displaying variations in gray levels with color rather than shades of gray, often used in scientific and medical applications. However, customizing the color table can also produce special effects with indexed-color images that have a limited number of colors.
Note: To shift colors simply in a pseudocolor image, choose Image > Adjustments, and use the color adjustment commands in the submenu.
Edit colors and assign transparency with a color table
You can edit colors in the color table to produce special effects, or assign transparency in the image to a single color in the table.
    Open the indexed-color image.
Choose Image > Mode > Color Table.
To change a single color, click the color and choose a new color in the color picker.
To change a range of colors, drag in the table to choose the range of colors you want to change. In the color picker, choose the first color you want in the range and click OK. When the color picker redisplays, choose the last color you want in the range and click OK.
The colors you selected in the Color Picker are placed in the range you selected in the Color Table dialog box.
To assign transparency to a color, select the Eyedropper tool in the Color Table dialog box, and click the color in the table or in the image. The sampled color is replaced with transparency in the image.
Click OK in the Color Table dialog box to apply the new colors to the indexed-color image.
    Choose a predefined color table
    Open the indexed-color image.
    Do one of the following:
Choose Image > Mode > Color Table.
Choose Image > Mode > Indexed Color. In the Indexed Color dialog box, choose Custom from the Palette menu. This opens the Color Table dialog box.
In the Color Table dialog box, choose a predefined table from the Table menu.
    Custom
    Creates a palette you specify.
    Black Body
Displays a palette based on the different colors a black body radiator emits as it is heatedfrom black to red, orange, yellow, and white.
    Grayscale
Displays a palette based on 256 levels of grayfrom black to white.
    Spectrum
Displays a palette based on the colors produced as white light passes through a prismfrom violet, blue, and green to yellow, orange, and red.
    System (Mac OS)
Displays the standard Mac OS 256-color system palette.
    System (Windows)
Displays the standard Windows 256-color system palette.
    Save and load color tables
You use the Save and Load buttons in the Color Table dialog box to save your indexed color tables for use with other Adobe Photoshop images. After you load a color table into an image, the colors in the image change to reflect the color positions they reference in the new color table.
Note: You can also load saved color tables into the Swatches palette.
Since all of the above worked as expected, I would conclude that it is a bug that is not affecting PowerPC (pre-Intel) Macs. :(
    Computer setup:
Dual bootable, DP MDD 1.25GHz G4 (2004), maxed out at 2GB of RAM, both Spotlight and Dashboard disabled, Photoshop primary scratch disk on dedicated 160GB internal drive, at least 100GB available on each of the four internal drives, up to 300GB on some. Counting external FW drives just over 1TB of drive space available. nVidia GeForce 4 Ti 128MB graphics display card (about to be upgraded in the next couple of hours). Processor napping enabled through CHUD 3.5.2.

  • Eyedropper issue with text color (CS6 / Win7)

    Hello there,
I'm dealing with many bugs with my CS6 (same as my colleagues), but all of them are already here, so no need to create new topics. But this one is kind of new to me and I didn't find it here.
Problem is picking-up a color for text from various objects (even other text) holding shift. In previous version holding shift with eyedropper took your desired color without any other attributes and put it in stroke / fill depending on what you've active. But now it doesn't work. It just show me the selected color in color selection, but it won't apply to my text.To avoid picking new attributes from other text, I've to save desired color, select my text I want to have in this color and apply .. And this is not the way I want to work with my illustrator
Maybe I forgot to set something in options, but I don't know where. Would be glad for any help

It's been discussed already here and appears to be a bug.

  • Is anyone else having bug issues with InDesign?

I'm trying to do homework with the version I purchased, and I keep running into bugs. Everything is extremely slow. When I scroll, zoom, and move an object, the program keeps skipping on me. When I place an image from Illustrator, there are other paths that show up that were not on the original image. And with those same images, the strokes and fills are all read as red slashes. They should be question marks since they are a combination of paths. And lastly, when I try to use the eye dropper to copy the color of a placed image, I get a popup saying, "Image is a vector graphic. Eyedropper values based on low resolution RGB proxy."
I think there might be some bug in InDesign, and it's really hard for me to work. It can't be my computer. I have Illustrator as well, and that one works fine despite scrolling speed. So is anyone else having these problems, or might there be something wrong with my version?

    I use CS6 on Windows 7.
My default interface preference was set to Live Screen Drawing: Delayed. I tried changing from that, it was the same deal. I have noticed though, that performance is a lot slower when Display Performance under Object.
For the extra lines showing up, I can't seem to find that same problem again, so I can't use a screenshot.
SRiegal, I don't get what you mean by copying the colors. If you say that InDesign cannot copy the color of vector graphics, then how can I recreate them not knowing the exact values?

  • Illustrator CS6 (win7) eyedropper is misbehaving

The eyedropper tool in Illustrator CS6 is causing me great frustration and i'm seriously convinced that it's buggy.
Ordinarily it will select the "Appearance" of a vector, but sometimes (compleatly randomly as far as i can tell) it will start to only sample the direct colour of the pixel under it, this includes the RGB colours of guides, edge-outlines and even the lime-green smart-guide annotations.
What's worse is this strange little bug/setting seems to stay with a file once saved. I've doubble-clicked the eyedropper tool to check what options are selected (all except the top-level appearance checkbox) and they are also the same in a file not displaying this oddity.
I hope I've justed missed some unknown keyboard short-cut or some strange setting.
[We're running CS6 on six Windows7 machines and have experienced this issue on all of them]

Thanks for the reply, you're correct in that it's the exact same function that the shift-key ordinarily performs.
But I doubt it's a driver, it's on six different computers and only on files that have been saved with the issue.
