Eyedropper in PS CS6 picking wrong color

My eyedropper started picking the wrong color!  I ahve reset and reinstalled PS - and still have this problem.  No matter what color I click the eyedropper on, it picks a shade darker than what I want.  Anyone have any ideas?  Like I said, I am running PS CS6 on OS Mountain Lion.

I also have problems with the eyedropper in RGB mode. I have a blue background color and when selecting it with the eyedropper I get #244f69 when I'm in RGB mode. And if I use that color in CSS on a website, the color gets darger than the original color in Photoshop. But if I change to CMYK mode and use the eyedropper again, then i get this code on the same background #00516a. And with that code I get the color I want on the website.
Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0 (13.0 20120315.r.428 2012/03/15:21:00:00) x64
Am I doing something wrong?
Apart from your Photoshop needing updated to at least 13.0.1, the problem may be that your RGB document, which you're sampling in Photoshop, does not have sRGB profile and/or your Web browser is not colour managed and/or your computer is not using a correctly calibrated monitor profile and/or something else.

  • Eyedropper tool fails to pick correct colors.

Hello, I'm facing a strange problem with eyedropper tool.
The background is a gradient mesh(ignore the crosses). I used eyedropper tool(shift-click/normal-click both gave the same result) on the background and it gave me a strange result. As you see the back ground is blue-to-black gradation but the color picked is green-ish from nowhere.
    How can I solve this?

This is a problem only with gradients because a gradient is an algorithm (formula) where all colors are only those defined with the color stops on the gradient tool (panel). The colors in between are generated on the fly in the color space  of the final output which in this case is the RGB color space (profile) of your monitor. As a workaround for this you can expand the gradient to steps or even rasterize it which will happen in the color space of the document and this will make all color values actually described one by one in the illustrator file either as vector object or in a raster image and then the eyedropper will be able to pick them as expected.
A simple example that demonstrate this: in a CMYK document create a gradient with two grayscale stops of 100% and 99%. then Shift clicking on this gradient will not pick an expected color but if you expend the gradient to two steps you will get two objects at 99% and 100%.

  • CS5.5 to CS6 AI: Wrong Color value

I use illustrator CS5.5 at office and continue my work at home by CS6.
But the color value are all gone wrong with decimal value. eg: c0y0m0k85 becomes c0y0m0k84.39
Does anyone know how to fix it?

    wonglo,
Are you sure you have the same Color Settings/Management?
One other thing that may specifically affect Pantone colours is the change of conversion values Pnatone > CMYK.

  • Eyedropper tool picks up wrong color

In Flash CC. It seems as though it's offset too far as it does not pick up the corre t color. Ive seen some talk of this here but for Mac. There seems to be nothing about Windows 8. How do I fix this? Without an eyedropper tool my Flash CC is relatively useless and I cant believe you havent fixed this since 2011 when I am noticing it first reported. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

There is a known on OSX 10.8 with eyedropper. To get the correct color, system display preferences should be set to "sRGB IEC61966-2.1".
Please see this link for reference - http://helpx.adobe.com/flash/kb/incorrect-color-eyedropper-tool-mac.html
What is the issue that you are seeing on Win8. can you provide some details on the steps involved?

  • Color picker picks wrong Pantone color in color library

I have a Pantone swatch and a Pantone color book that contain the same colors. With the color library open in the color picker, I select a color from the swatch using the dropper and most times it gives me the correct color.
    However, some times it doesn't.
I have verified that the 8 bit RGB values of the colors are identical in the color book and swatch (as shown in the info panel), but still it gives me a different color. Both files are in RGB color, with the swatch stored in 16bit and the color book in 8 bit (file format limitations).
What causes the wrong color to be selected? How does photoshop calculate the "distance" between the colors to determine which is closest? I would expect that it should select the color that has identical RGB values, even though the one it does select is relatively close in RGB space.

The color picker always fails on the same colors. My monitor profile is sRGB. Every color profile setting I know of is on sRGB and it doesn't seem to make a difference.
In the image below I've tried to show what is happening. In the top version, the incorrectly chosen color (wrong red value) is selected in the color library, while the info panel shows the RGB value of the swatch color that the mouse is over. In the bottom version, the correct color was manually selected to show that it does indeed exist in the color book. In this case the RGB value in the info panel (from the swatch) and the RGB is the color library are the same.

  • My illustrator cs5 eyedropper tool will not pick up any color! help!

I have been scrolling through this forum and google, and have not found an answer.
My Illustrator CS5 has been working all day, and I went away from it momentarily to pack some boxes for moving and the eye dropper tool started picking up colors that didn't exist in the placed image i'm grabbing from.
(clearly not black within that circle...)
I "found" a solution on this site where you go into your eyedropper options and make sure your appearance boxes are checked, and they weren't so I did that, and now the eyedropper tool won't pick up any color at all.
I have a project deadlines that require this program, and i've tried just about everything but re-installing.
    Anybody have ANY solutions?
Here are the way my settings are now:
P.s. I'm not crazy tech saavy, so go explanation crazy if you'd like.

It's not live traced just vectored with the pencil tool!
I was trying to grab the individual pixel color from a jpeg, cmyk image to apply to the shapes drawn with the pencil tool.
I'm not sure what the problem was with the tool/program, but it seems to have fixed itself!
However, I appreciate your response anyways!

  • ID picks CMYK colors as RGB

    Hello
The problem is: when I try to pick a CMYK color in InDesign, it immediately switches it to RGB. The method I pick the color doesn't matter, even if I pick my color from the swatches (C0, M0, Y0, K100), the object is colored with something like C79 M81 Y80 K100.
For you to realise how much "fun" I am having, I add some pictures
    type in: C50, M50, Y0, K50

I use ID CS2 (running on Windows 8), recently I changed my computer, so, since the CS2 activation server is offline, I was forced to use the installer downloaded from Adobe's website. That's when it started, so either it's a problem with this particular distribution, or I had a setting on my old ID installation I'm not aware of. Either way, the usual "if ID acts strange, trash the preferences" method doesn't apply here.
This is wrong on so many levels I guess I'm missing something obvious. Help!

    > Are you really running CS2 in Windows 8?
Haha, as long as it does it's job, why not? It costs more than I make in a month, so sorry, no yearly updates
    >on rare occasions I run CS2 in the Windows Virtual Machine in Win7 and it seems to work correctly, but it will not run at all in Win7 directly
We've got two CS2 running on Win7 without a problem.
But yeah, I'm ordering CS6 right now

  • Book Module Lightroom 4 -- can I use a color picker to pick a color from a photo to use as the backg

I am trying to match a background color for a page in a Blurb book using the Lightroom 4 Book Module.  Is there any way I can use the color picker to pick a color from the photo to use as the color for the background and as the type color?  I see the color box for these situations, but the color picker only seems to work with the color array that pops up and doesn't go to the photo.  Any suggestions?  Am I overlooking something very obvious?

    It works for me.
The usual Lightroom way: click the eyedropper onto the color palette first, then hold and drag to your photo to sample color.

  • Paintbrush and paint bucket use wrong color in PE6 for Mac

Hi.  I am trying to use either the paintbrush or paint bucket tool to add a solid color in a layer.  I choose a foreground color and apply the tool and instead of using the color I've chosen, it uses an old color I used several photos ago.  (I chose the old color with the eyedropper tool in case that matters).  No matter what I do, it seems that this old color is stuck in both the paintbrush and paint bucket.  I've tried choosing a different color with the eyedropper, and although that color appears as the foreground color, the old "bad" color still applies when I use either the paintbrush or bucket tool.  I have reset the tools (no luck), rebooted photoshop (no luck), tried switching back to the default (B&W) colors (still no luck).  Does anyone have any suggestion what I can try?  I'm new to the forum and have tried searching for this issue, but can't find it.  I apologize if this is an old issue.  Thank you for your help.

Hi, thank you for this suggestion.  I will try it, and it also sounds useful for lots of quirky things.  In the meantime, I tried something else that solved my problem. I reset the eyedropper tool and picked another color with it and it cleared it out.  I had reset all the tools, but somehow it didn't work until I did this.  Thank you for your help.

I can't find the pipet in the toolbox to pick a color from a picture. Where can I find it?

In InDesign CC 2014, the Color Theme tool has "top billing" and the Eyedropper tool is underneath it. In the US English version, pressing the letter "I" toggles between the two.

  • CS5 Samples Wrong Color

I'm having issues with the eyedropper tool in Photoshop. I've found that after I add an adjustment layer, using the eyedropper tool on any given layer in the document will give me the wrong color. A color is sampled, but seems to be shifted in Hue/Saturation/Brightness from the original color on the layer. I've made sure that the tool is set to 'Point Sample' and 'Current Layer', but the issue persists until I restart Photoshop.
I posted this question around two months ago, and have since followed advice and reformatted my Computer, upgraded the graphics driver, upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista, and installed the 12.0.1 Photoshop update. The error is exactly the same as before, leading me to believe that I can't be the only one experiencing this.
Can anyone duplicate the issue on their setup? Any ideas on how to address it?
    Thanks very much.

Have you tried turning off OpenGL? Sampling the wrong color only after a while would suggest it does this because it is not flushing a buffer or the card generally has a misconfiguration that prevents it from handling transparencies, so, if you will, after a while some "invisible pixel" obstructs the correct sampling region.

  • Wrong color profile after export - what am I doing wrong?

I'm a beginner in color management and color profiles and I have a problem with my exported files from AE CS6 (german version):
In my project settings I've set the working space to "adobe RGB (1998)" which is the same like my footage (JPEG Image-Sequence).
In my Output Module Settings I've set it also to the working space "adobe RGB (1998)".
I' ve tried to export it as h.246 and AVI.
And now the Problem: the exported clips are too bright and washed out. First I thought it is a problem with the Windows Media Player, but I imported the clips again to after effects and the showed Profile is now "HDTV (Rec. 709) Y'CbCr". This is the case with the h.246-clips. The AVI-Clips showed the profile "sRGB IEC61..." So the settings from the Output Module didn't seem to work.
The washed-out-effect disappeared after I set everything to HDTV, but I don't think this is the right way to go..
    Thank you for any help

Simple, really: You are using a) a wrong color space b) your system is not calibrated, but you have color management enabled and c) use formats that don't support color management. This is simply wrong from stem to stern, especially with regards to b) and c). Why would you even use Adobe RGB when video works on Rec 709 or even more generic sRGB? I think you do not even understand the point of CM on a fundamental level. you don't dictate the color space by your source files, you simply import them into your working color space - regardless of whatever it is set to. The color metrics engine will apply any corrections necessary based on the associated/ embedded profiles, which ultimately is the whole point. Conversely, enabling CM for output will require a format that actually uses those corrections, which comes down to only a handful. so to cut a long story short: Unless you are willing and technically able to establish a proper CM workflow simply leave it off and just use the default sRGB that AE ever has used.

  • Regarding color picking and color management - can someone, please test this?

Please take a few seconds to test this and let me know the result.
This is with CS5 but probably the same with older versions:
Create a new document and zoom out so that the canvas is smaller than the window.
Change the Standard Screen Mode color to Custom and choose some color, for example gray that is 60 for each R,G, and B.
You can do that in the Interface page of the Preferences or by right clicking on the empty area of the window that is beyond the image's canvas.
Using the eyedropper tool pick the color of that empty area
Press Alt + Delete to fill the canvas with that color.
Do you see a difference between the canvas and that area.
I see a slight difference when the color management preview is on and no difference when it is off (soft proofing using Monitor RGB)
I have some ideas but it will be great of someone can make a clear conclusion and explanation for this behavior.

    Thanks for that confirmation, Chris.
Same thing with my apps, though with effort I suppose the colors for the controls and background COULD be put through the color management system at startup time...  Lots more complexity though, and that would kind of diverge with the concept of theme selection, not to mention potentially uncovering bugs in the control implementations...  And, if the user has gone out of his way to set everything to a pretty shade of blue, and along comes a color-managed dialog that's gone greenish because that's what those color values REALLY mean, that would likely be reported as a bug just because it's different...

  • Wrong colors when printing to HP Colorlaser Jet 4550 PCL 5c

I just upgraded from Labview 5.1.1 to Labview 6.1 on a Windows 95 Compaq Notebook. All the plot colors in 8 plot XY Graph indicator printed correctly on our network HP Colorlaser Jet 4550 PCL 5c using Labview 5.1.1. When I print the graph in Labview 6.1, sometimes some of the plot colors in the graph are wrong. In fact one of the plot switches color about 2/3 of the way across the X-axis. What is really weird is that the plot colors always print correctly in the legend. The VI prints the graph programically, but I also get the same inconsistent results when I copy the XY Graph to a new VI and use the print window comand in the file menu.
In my Labview preferences I use standard printing with colors and di
thering is turn on. The colors are correct when I programically save the front panel to either bmp, jpeg, or png files.
    What causing this strange behavior?

    Greg,
Thanks for your suggestion; however, it did not solve the problem. I set the line thickest to the maximum. Then I tried with and without dithering. The results were still inconsistent. Sometimes I got the correct colors; othertimes, some plots had the wrong colors. I attached two gif files as examples. The first shows the correct colors. The second shows that the 1st plot is yellow instead of blue. Also the 4th plot is green instead of red for the 1st 80% of the plot. Then it switches to the correct color, red. I have other graphs with different plots with the wrong colors. Notice that the colors in the legend are always correct.
