Eyedropper tool only creates black stroke on text.
Everytime I use the eyedropper tool on some text, instead of picking up the font, colour, and attributes of the text I dropper, it somehow just outlines my selection with a black stroke. This has been happening with any kind of text, in many different documents. I can't figure out why it suddenly started. Ideas?

How to select black with the eyedropper tool?

I am attempting to lighten a black top my customer is wearing in a yoga DVD, or change it's color. I have successfully managed to make the grass greener, by using the eyedropper tool and then adjusting the range and tolerance handles to isolate the grass. But this is not working with the black top. I have many different settings and cannot isolate the black - in fact not even close, the destaturated preview is showing a very small percentage of the image is selected and the black not at all. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

In this case, forget the eyedropper.
Reset your HSL settings then adjust only the Luma tolerances, pulling the white end down until you've isolated the luma range you want. Then use a vignette or custom shape to isolate the key to shirt.

Photoshop CC crashes frequently, with eyedropper tool (white/black/gray point setter in curves)
I get photoshop crashing all the time, multiple times an hour, regardless of various setting changes, here are a few crash logs. This is not my computer, but i have seen the same error on my laptop as well. It most often(almost always) happens on clicking a point with the eyedropper tool.

Trouble Sampling Colors with Eyedropper Tool: InDesign CS5
Hey everyone,
My name is Quin, and I've used InDesign CS5 for the past few years and am working on a magazine layout for the first time. I'm suddenly having a really difficult time getting the eye-dropper tool to extract color samples from images i've placed in my layout. These are either jpeg or PDF images. If I recall correctly, in my past use of the program, i could simply click the eyedropper tool in an image and get my color sample – but suddenly, i'm having trouble getting it to sample color/make a color swatch.
I tried double clicking the tool and excluding everything i wouldn't want it to sample. Tried locking/unlocking layers, tried making sure the image frame itself is selected, tried holding down option, tried trashing the preferences (using a 2012 MacBook Air with the latest version of OS X Mountain Lion)… most of the time when i attempt to sample a color, nothing shows up in the fill box, except the classic diaognal red line over white.
The exception is when i use the eyedropper to sample non-image base things i've already filled, like a retangle, it picks up the color fine. So it's likely image specific. Is there something really obvious that i'm missing? It's frustrating because i simply want to sample colors to get a rough idea for text colors and headlines that can match images, and there doesn't seem to be a quick way to do this…

-QuinQuin, I just had a eureka moment! I was having the exact same problem, unable to sample color from images with the eyedropper tool, and when I sampled text to apply formatting, it strangely applied a black rule around the new text. The problem was intermittent, with the tool both working and not working within the same document. I finally realized the tool was misbehaving when sampling an item on the document, but worked fine when sampling images or text on the pasteboard.
So, the document I'm working on is an ad with a 1pt rule around the border. I have the border on it's own layer at the top level, and locked, so I can select items on the ad without the border getting in the way. What I found is, even though it's locked, the eyedropper tool is sampling the border from that layer!
I tried turning off stroke settings in the eyedropper options just gave my text a fill of 'none.' Turning off both stroke and fill settings had no effect on the new text at all. I tried unlocking the layer and just locking the border on it's own, but it still picked up the formatting from the border.
The only thing that worked is to hide the layer! Turn off the layer 'eyeball' and see if that works for you. -
Eyedropper Tool sets Background color instead of Foreground
Q: Why does the Eyedropper Tool set the Background color instead of the Foreground color when I click in my image?
A: The reason for this is that the Background swatch is "targeted" to accept the color information passed on by the Eyedropper Tool when you use it to sample a color. You can reset the behavior by clicking on the Foreground swatch in your Colors Palette/Panel. See the image below:

No matter which swatch is targeted, you can choose to temporarily sample color into the other swatch by holding down the Option key (ALT on Windows) while you sample with the Eyedropper Tool.
If you'd like to have the current Foreground and Background colors (as displayed in your Toolbox) switch places, simply tap the 'X' key on your keyboard.
Finally, to reset the Foreground and Background swatches to their default of black and white, simply tap the 'D' key.Click on Windows and color. There is a setting there to change from
foreground to background. The one with the box around it is the default setting. -
InDesign Eyedropper Tool Problem or Bug?
I am running InDesign CS3 on Snow Leopard.
Issue: I working merrily on my way in a project when all of a sudden the Eyedropper Tool blitzes out on me by not copying text attributes correctly.
Though I cannot replicate the problem at will it happens maybe once every two weeks or so without warning.
100% of the time, when it happens, the text that I want to apply the attributes to retains the original font but an black outline is applied. It makes me think that I inerrantly toggled some control, but cannot what.
I reboot—nothing
Note: I do use stylesheets and manage them well.
When I create a new document the eyedropper works fine. Maybe it in inherent in a worked over document?
Any one sun inthis problem?

Eyedropper Tool Reverse Selection

I'm just new on this forum and I just installed FCS 2.0. In Color, on the Secondary Room can I invert the selection of the eyedropper tool from the once selected with white area to the black area? I hope you understand what I mean.

If this is the case, then it is, for the most part, irrelevant, as long as the area that you have defined encompasses the image content that you need to qualify. You control the image values that you wish to change by choosing either "Inside" or "Outside". The difference is all that matters, unless you start compounding the qualification with a vignette.

Eyedropper tool fails to pick correct colors.
Hello, I'm facing a strange problem with eyedropper tool.
The background is a gradient mesh(ignore the crosses). I used eyedropper tool(shift-click/normal-click both gave the same result) on the background and it gave me a strange result. As you see the back ground is blue-to-black gradation but the color picked is green-ish from nowhere.
How can I solve this?This is a problem only with gradients because a gradient is an algorithm (formula) where all colors are only those defined with the color stops on the gradient tool (panel). The colors in between are generated on the fly in the color space of the final output which in this case is the RGB color space (profile) of your monitor. As a workaround for this you can expand the gradient to steps or even rasterize it which will happen in the color space of the document and this will make all color values actually described one by one in the illustrator file either as vector object or in a raster image and then the eyedropper will be able to pick them as expected.
A simple example that demonstrate this: in a CMYK document create a gradient with two grayscale stops of 100% and 99%. then Shift clicking on this gradient will not pick an expected color but if you expend the gradient to two steps you will get two objects at 99% and 100%. -
Eyedropper tool RGB and CMYK help!
When I try and sample a color from a graphic imported with the eyedropper tool, it automatically creates the swatch as RGB. The imported graphic is CMYK and the document color mode is CMYK. The InDesign file is set for Print.
Please help. I hate having to select a swatch and then have to change it to CMYK every time!For placed ai and pdf files the preview proxy is always RGB so the eyedropper gets RGB values. With image files the eyedropper will return the actual pixel color. If you are trying to get an exact match to the placed vector file's CMYK values, converting the proxy RGB values to CMYK won't work because the color will be a color managed conversion from RGB to CMYK.

Eyedropper tool - Makes color RGB from CMYK image.
I made an image CMYK in photostop, and then placed it in an indesign file. When I used the eyedropper tool to grab a color from that graphic, the eyedropper tool made that color RGB. Our printer only accepts CMYK. So, I am a bit confused. How can I fix this? Or will this be a non-issue?
ThanksI can think of three possibilities for what happened.
If the image is missing (check the links panel) the eydropper is sampling the RGB screen preview.
If you pasted the image from Photoshop instead of Placing it, you only pasted the low resolution RGB screen preview, and you have more problems than the eyedropper color.
If you opened the color picker by double-clicking on the color box, then said OK while the cursor was in one of the RGB fields (the default state), the color was converted from CMYK to RGB.
The only time RGB is a non-issue is when you are outputting on a RGB device (screen or desktop printer). If the printer said he wants CMYK you need to give him CMYK, or pay him to fix it.

Problem with Eyedropper Tool in CS5
I have used many versions of PS but can not figure this one out. When using the Eyedropper Tool in CS5 it does NOT pick up a color when I click on that color...the Foreground and Background colors remain black and white. Any suggestions?

My illustrator cs5 eyedropper tool will not pick up any color! help!
I have been scrolling through this forum and google, and have not found an answer.
My Illustrator CS5 has been working all day, and I went away from it momentarily to pack some boxes for moving and the eye dropper tool started picking up colors that didn't exist in the placed image i'm grabbing from.
(clearly not black within that circle...)
I "found" a solution on this site where you go into your eyedropper options and make sure your appearance boxes are checked, and they weren't so I did that, and now the eyedropper tool won't pick up any color at all.
I have a project deadlines that require this program, and i've tried just about everything but re-installing.
Anybody have ANY solutions?

I was trying to grab the individual pixel color from a jpeg, cmyk image to apply to the shapes drawn with the pencil tool.
I'm not sure what the problem was with the tool/program, but it seems to have fixed itself!

Eyedropper tool in Illustrator not working on pasted Photoshop image

I've copied images from 3 different layers in Photoshop into Illustrator. One is an outline, another is a colour fill and the last is a filled in ellipse. When trying to use the eyedropper tool to get a colour used in the colour fill, it doesn't work - only showing black or white. But it will pick up the ellipse's fill colour. It picks up other colours in the document fine that I drew in Illustrator.
Any idea what I need to do to get this to work? I'm at a loss.

I think I've figured out what was going on. The eyedropper was picking up only the outline layer's colours so was only getting black when on an outline, and white when on the colour fill area. If I delete the outline and left only the colour fill and the pink background, the eyedropper works. The outline was blocking the eyedropper from accessing the colour fill. Not sure exactly how that works as the outline isn't filled in with colour (obviously, otherwise the colour fill below wouldn't show through). Nor is it completely transparent - it's just an outline.
They are all copied into a new document on the same layer, but grouped. So I either have to delete the outline layer or turn it off in the - I'm not sure of the terminology here - layers that are within the layer(?).

Eyedropper tool isn't working correctly in Levels, Curves adjustments
I have installed PS CS 5 Extended on a new computer running Vista Home Premium. No other version of Photoshop has ever been installed on this system.
The problem that I am encountering is the eyedropper tools in both the curves, and levels adjustment doesn’t work. The actual sliders seem to work appropriately, but clicking an eyedropper and then clicking a spot on the photo has no effect at all on the image.
I do not encounter this problem when I run the 64 Bit version of the program. It only occurs in the standard version of CS5, which I need to continue to use due to plug-in incompatibility with the 64 bit version.
I’ve checked the obvious, and ensured that the “preview” box is checked, and that I have the correct layer selected!
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!Not sure if it could be coming into play here, but the sample size for the Eyedropper Tool (proper) affects the use of the Eyedropper in other dialogs.
Do this:
1. Click the Eyedropper Tool in the Tools panel.
2. Right-click on the image, and choose Point Sample.
3. Now try your Curves function again.
A second possibility is that you have a small selection made somewhere, and the Curves operation is only affecting that, so you're not seeing the change overall. I know you said you checked everything, but you didn't mention checking for a Selection.
If these are not the issues, I have to wonder whether maybe something's wrong with your display driver. Since OpenGL is involved in making the display, perhaps an OpenGL problem could be blocking the ability for the eyedropper to pick up the color. What video card do you have and what version of the display driver?
You can test for OpenGL issues by temporarily deconfiguring the use of OpenGL Drawing:
1. Edit - Preferences - Performance
2. Uncheck [ ] Enable OpenGL Drawing.
3. OK out and restart Photoshop.
4. Does the problem still occur? If so, a driver update may fix it.
