Eyedropper tool wrong rgb color

I've placed an rgb image and on top of that a vector square which I wanna give the same color as the bright green one in the rgb image. So I used the eyedropper tool on that bright green color. But as you can see it give a more dull greenish color. The document is in rgb mode. I would expect this more when I was working in cmyk but I ain't. Why isn't the eyedropper tool picking the bright green color? The image is in rgb, illustrator is in rgb, in photoshop I can see the bright green color in the rgb image. So why isn't illustrator using this bright green color with it's eyedropper tool?
Edit: Turns out the eyedropper tool only works correctly (while illustrator is in rgb color mode and the image placed is also in rgb), when the image placed is embedded and not just linked. After I dragged the image on the page and go to Links to have the image embedded and then use the eyedropper tool, I get the exact same color. Seems a bit odd that it won't work the same way when the image is linked?

The eyedropper only works accuratelyon vector objects. Shift eyedropper is misleading as the color chanegs but never has been accurate on bitmaps in Illustrator. Shift eyedropper does not pick up the pixel value, but what is being sent to the monitor going through conversions for color mgmt, color modes, etc.  Open the image in photoshop and use the eyedropper set to 1 pixel.

  • Eyedropper Tool sets Background color instead of Foreground

Q: Why does the Eyedropper Tool set the Background color instead of the Foreground color when I click in my image?
A: The reason for this is that the Background swatch is "targeted" to accept the color information passed on by the Eyedropper Tool when you use it to sample a color. You can reset the behavior by clicking on the Foreground swatch in your Colors Palette/Panel. See the image below:
    http://forums.adobe.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-1902897-1946/Eyedropper-Focus- Infographic.png
No matter which swatch is targeted, you can choose to temporarily sample color into the other swatch by holding down the Option key (ALT on Windows) while you sample with the Eyedropper Tool.
If you'd like to have the current Foreground and Background colors (as displayed in your Toolbox) switch places, simply tap the 'X' key on your keyboard.
Finally, to reset the Foreground and Background swatches to their default of black and white, simply tap the 'D' key.

Click on Windows and color.  There is a setting there to change from
foreground to background.  The one with the box around it is the default setting.

  • Eyedropper tool - Makes color RGB from CMYK image.

I made an image CMYK in photostop, and then placed it in an indesign file. When I used the eyedropper tool to grab a color from that graphic, the eyedropper tool made that color RGB. Our printer only accepts CMYK. So, I am a bit confused. How can I fix this? Or will this be a non-issue?
    Thanks

I can think of three possibilities for what happened.
If the image is missing (check the links panel) the eydropper is sampling the RGB screen preview.
If you pasted the image from Photoshop instead of Placing it, you only pasted the low resolution RGB screen preview, and you have more problems than the eyedropper color.
If you opened the color picker by double-clicking on the color box, then said OK while the cursor was in one of the RGB fields (the default state), the color was converted from CMYK to RGB.
The only time RGB is a non-issue is when you are outputting on a RGB device (screen or desktop printer). If the printer said he wants CMYK you need to give him CMYK, or pay him to fix it.

  • Problem: eyedropper tool gives me darker color

Hi all, I hope someone can help me with my problem. I'm on motion 3.0.2 that i have been using for a while but now I have a problem I can't find an answer to. For the past months, the eyedropper tool of any color property and effects gives me a darker color than what I click on. It's the same color but darker, a real hassle when trying to match two colors. Help anyone? Thanks

I've noticed this at times. I have no solution.

  • Eyedropper tool bug in CS6

I'm using Illustrator CS6 16.0.3 on Windows and have problem with eyedropper. When i hold shift and try to assign color from somewhere the foreground swatch is updated but the color of selected object itself stays the same. I work with photoreferences and it brings me a lot of discomfort so i'm planning to revert to CS5 until it's resolved.
I know that this is bug of the program itself and it was fixed on Mac several months ago with 16.0.4 update but the Windows update is still missing so the question is: when are we going to recieve this so much needed update?
    Seriously, Adobe, you're failing me.

I can ya'll exactly what's going on here, and yes, I think it's a dumb CS6 bug. Never happened to me before CS6. You might have noticed that sometimes the eyedropper tool works just fine and picks up the colors, and sometimes it doesn't. Here's the answer.
The eyedropper tool wont apply colors to groups of shapes, even if there is only one shape in that group. Don't ask me why, but that's the reason. Took me a while to find out. And it seems that if you use the shape building tool in any way it makes the object become a group... and then the eyedropper tool doesn't work properly again.
There are three basic temporary fixes:
    - Go into your group and change elements individually
    - Use the direct selection tool and select objects to color them individually
    - "Ungroup" the object (even if it's only one object!) and eyedrop to your hearts content
They take a bit more time, but at least you can get the colors you want.

  • DW CS4 Freezes when using eyedropper tool

Whenever using eyedropper tool to sample colors from any
source - Kuhler, another color section of the site, etc - DW CS4
freezes and I must reboot. Any ideas? I have already updated to
latest upgrade from Adobe - Have only had the program for less than
    a week.

I have DW CS4 on Windows XP Pro SP2 and experienced the same
thing. I can Pass the wand over the background and key in the

    eyedropper wand. Strange.

  • Eyedropper tool picks up wrong color

In Flash CC. It seems as though it's offset too far as it does not pick up the corre t color. Ive seen some talk of this here but for Mac. There seems to be nothing about Windows 8. How do I fix this? Without an eyedropper tool my Flash CC is relatively useless and I cant believe you havent fixed this since 2011 when I am noticing it first reported. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

There is a known on OSX 10.8 with eyedropper. To get the correct color, system display preferences should be set to "sRGB IEC61966-2.1".
Please see this link for reference - http://helpx.adobe.com/flash/kb/incorrect-color-eyedropper-tool-mac.html
What is the issue that you are seeing on Win8. can you provide some details on the steps involved?

  • Eyedropper tool fails to pick correct colors.

Hello, I'm facing a strange problem with eyedropper tool.
The background is a gradient mesh(ignore the crosses). I used eyedropper tool(shift-click/normal-click both gave the same result) on the background and it gave me a strange result. As you see the back ground is blue-to-black gradation but the color picked is green-ish from nowhere.
    How can I solve this?

This is a problem only with gradients because a gradient is an algorithm (formula) where all colors are only those defined with the color stops on the gradient tool (panel). The colors in between are generated on the fly in the color space  of the final output which in this case is the RGB color space (profile) of your monitor. As a workaround for this you can expand the gradient to steps or even rasterize it which will happen in the color space of the document and this will make all color values actually described one by one in the illustrator file either as vector object or in a raster image and then the eyedropper will be able to pick them as expected.
A simple example that demonstrate this: in a CMYK document create a gradient with two grayscale stops of 100% and 99%. then Shift clicking on this gradient will not pick an expected color but if you expend the gradient to two steps you will get two objects at 99% and 100%.

  • Eyedropper tool RGB and CMYK help!

When I try and sample a color from a graphic imported with the eyedropper tool, it automatically creates the swatch as RGB.  The imported graphic is CMYK and the document color mode is CMYK.  The InDesign file is set for Print.
Please help.  I hate having to select a swatch and then have to change it to CMYK every time!

For placed ai and pdf files the preview proxy is always RGB so the eyedropper gets RGB values. With image files the eyedropper will return the actual pixel color. If you are trying to get an exact match to the placed vector file's CMYK values, converting the proxy RGB values to CMYK won't work because the color will be a color managed conversion from RGB to CMYK.

  • Using the eyedropper tool to take a color from another file or website...

    Hi,
I'm new to Kuler, but recall being able to use the eyedropper tool in InDesign and click on an area of color from a file from another application or a website and have use it in the InDesign file.
    Am I incorrect?
If there is a way to do what I am asking if you could please explain how I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks and look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Not sure what exactly you are asking here.
However, wrt Kuler in Indesign, You can add swatches to Indesign Swatches Panel. You can apply color to ID Fill/Stroke color by simply double-clicking a color on Create Tab inside Kuler panel. Or you can take color from Fill/Stroke and set it as base in Create tab to create theme around it

  • Trouble Sampling Colors with Eyedropper Tool: InDesign CS5

    Hey everyone,
My name is Quin, and I've used InDesign CS5 for the past few years and am working on a magazine layout for the first time. I'm suddenly having a really difficult time getting the eye-dropper tool to extract color samples from images i've placed in my layout. These are either jpeg or PDF images. If I recall correctly, in my past use of the program, i could simply click the eyedropper tool in an image and get my color sample – but suddenly, i'm having trouble getting it to sample color/make a color swatch.
I tried double clicking the tool and excluding everything i wouldn't want it to sample. Tried locking/unlocking layers, tried making sure the image frame itself is selected, tried holding down option, tried trashing the preferences (using a 2012 MacBook Air with the latest version of OS X Mountain Lion)… most of the time when i attempt to sample a color, nothing shows up in the fill box, except the classic diaognal red line over white.
The exception is when i use the eyedropper to sample non-image base things i've already filled, like a retangle, it picks up the color fine. So it's likely image specific. Is there something really obvious that i'm missing? It's frustrating because i simply want to sample colors to get a rough idea for text colors and headlines that can match images, and there doesn't seem to be a quick way to do this…
Thanks so much for the help!
    -Quin

Quin, I just had a eureka moment! I was having the exact same problem,  unable to sample color from images with the eyedropper tool, and when I sampled text to apply formatting, it strangely applied a black rule around the new text. The problem was intermittent, with the tool both working  and not working within the same document. I finally realized the tool was  misbehaving when sampling an item on the document, but worked fine when sampling images or text on the pasteboard.
So, the document I'm working on is an ad with a 1pt rule around the border. I have the border on it's own layer at the top level, and locked, so I can select items on the ad without the border getting in the way. What I found is, even though it's locked, the eyedropper tool is sampling the border from that layer!
I tried turning off  stroke  settings in the eyedropper options just gave my text a fill of 'none.' Turning off both stroke and fill settings had no effect on the new text at all. I tried unlocking the layer and just locking the border on it's own, but it still picked up the formatting from the border.
The only thing that worked is to hide the layer! Turn off the layer 'eyeball' and see if that works for you.

  • Why does the eyedropper tool set the background color swatch instead of the foreground?

Whenever I try to use the eyedropper tool in Photoshop CS5, the eyedroper sets the background color instead of the foreground. I know you can swap the colors with the arrows, but Photoshop used to be able to just put the color in the foreground swatch without me doing any extra manual work. How do I restore it?

Click on Windows and color.  There is a setting there to change from
foreground to background.  The one with the box around it is the default setting.

  • Why do you need to shift click to select stroke color with eyedropper tool?

    Hi,
    Quick question..
Why do you need to shift click to select the stroke color with the eyedropper tool?
I had the problem where I could not do this earlier and found the solution on this forum.
However I still do not understand the reason for this.
Appreciate if anyone could explain it to me.
    Thanks in advance.
    Nori

    Hi, Nori,
If you have the red and blue rectangle selected and the Fill square selected in the tool panel, as at bottom left, then hold the shift key down and click with the eyedropper on the green stroke in the upper rectangle, then the red fill will turn green but the stroke stays blue. If you select Stroke, as at bottom right, then shift-click with the eyedropper on the green stroke, the blue stroke will turn green but the fill stays red. With Fill selected and shift-click on the yellow fill, the red fill turns yellow; with Stroke selected the blue stroke turns yellow. If you do not depress the shift key, the red and blue rectangle will become yellow and green.
It's complicated to explain, but I think that if you try it step by step it will make sense to you.

  • Eyedropper tool selects wrong colour?

I've had this problem intermittently for a couple of months now and I've had no luck in resolving it. Sometimes restarting the program resolves it but only temporarily. I'm using the latest version of PS CC 2014.
The eyedropper tool is not selecting the correct colour. I'm definitely sampling from the current layer; I've even tried selecting a colour from a solid background and it's still wrong.  The only way I can get the correct colour is to click the colour picker/foreground and select it the long way.  That's a real pain.
For example right now, I have a 50% gray background.  If I use the eyedropper tool, I get 9f9f9f but if I use the colour picker I get the correct 808080.  Why is this happening?  How can I fix it?
    Many thanks!

Hello gener7, thank you for replying quickly!
I've tried changing my sampling size but this doesn't make a difference, particularly because this occurs even if I'm sampling from a solid colour.  With hope, I tried your suggestion of resetting the tool but unfortunately that didn't work either.
I've just quit PS and restarted it and hey! it's working properly again (for now!).  I don't call this a "fix" though because it shouldn't be happening in the first place and it's really annoying to have to keep restarting, especially when I'm in "the zone".

  • Eyedropper Selects Wrong Color

    Im using Photoshop CS5 (version 12.1 x64).
When I try to use the Eyedropper Tool on a thin (1-4 pixel) shape (both pathed and raster) it will select the incorrect color and only give me a lighter, similar color.
    See below:
This is me clicking right in the middle of this red line using the "pricision cursor" and it selects this pink color.
I did not have this problem in previous versions of Photoshop.
Anyone know why this is happening?

Check the eyedropper tool -- you have it set to sample a larger area than a single pixel, so it's mixing the surrounding white in with your red line.
