Eyetv (hybrid)

look, i wasnt sure where to post this question!!!!
i would want to buy the hybrid elgato hardware + software, but i am not sure about one spec....
could i use this in the middle of a park, street???
like where would i get a portable antenna for this???

(old man voice) "Back in my day, we didn't have any fancy cable TV, we used an antenna. And we liked it!"
I assume that you mean over the air broadcast and not wireless TV.
The EyeTV Hybrid can display and record any over the air broadcast. It does not come with an antenna, so you will just need to stop in to Best Buy and get one.
No box is required, but you will likely get better reception with one, depending on where you live and how strong of an over the air signal you receive at your location.

  • Thinking of getting EyeTV Hybrid to convert VHS to digital - the right move?

    Hello,
I am soon going to be going back to Macintosh after a failed 17 year experiment with Windows and one of the things I will be wanting to do is transfer some home videos I own into a format that I can edit likely using I-movie.
I have reviewed several discussions on-line, and think I will be going with EyeTV Hybrid but I am wanting some fresh advice to make sure I am making the right decision.  The videos I will be wanting to transfer come in, what I believe, are two analog forms VHS-C (which I would play back using a VHS cartridge converter as the camera is dead) and Hi8MP which I would play back using a Samsung SCw62 Camcorder.
Essentially, I am looking for a good conversion but it does not have to be great.  I would like to be able to do some editing once they are converted, but these are home movies and I am treating them that way and not looking at producing a professional quality video.
So here are the options I have gathered online.  As I said, I think I am likely going to go for EyeTV Hybrid but would appreciate any feedback as to whether it’s the best option for me or whether I should be considering something else. Money is an issue and I really don't see myself going much above $200 on this.
From what I have read, EyeTV Hybrid seems like it might be my best option.  Its priced at around $150 which fits my budget and I understand the results are fairly good.  Any reason why I should be wary of this option?  Is it fairly straight forward to use? From what I understand, I all need to buy is this and it comes with the necessary software – am I correct?
I have read that video pass through in which the camera essentially converts analog to a digital signal. This does NOT appear to be an option for me unfortunately.  As I mentioned, I own a Samsung SCw62 Camcorder and I also own a Sony HDR-CX110.  Reading through the manuals I could see nothing that would suggest they could do this but I would be delighted to be informed that I am wrong.
There appeared to be a consensus on the threads I read that the Grass Valley ADVC300 analog DV converter would produce a high quality transfer.  However, the price that I have seen is about $400 and this is far more than I am willing to pay and I haven’t seen a used one on ebay.
The ADVC110 does fit my budget but I am wondering if it would be much better than the EyeTV Hybrid as the prices I have seen have been a little more than $200.
There appears to be a consensus that the Roxio Easy VHS to DVD will result in a fairly low quality video and is not recommended. Anyone disagree?
Are there any other options I should consider?
Finally, as I noted I want to make some nice home movies using my old analog tapes is there any reason why investing in Final Cut Express would help in the conversion process?
Thanks to everyone for your help.
    Cheers

There appeared to be a consensus on the threads I read that the Grass Valley ADVC300 analog DV converter would produce a high quality transfer.
I have a drawer full of analog-to-digital converters (including the EyeTV Hybrid).   After using the Grass Valley ADVC300 I find nothing else acceptable.   I appreciate your concerns about the cost you just have to decide how important these videos are.
Compared to today's standards DV Video's quality is not that great, so I don't want to lose ANYTHING in my conversion, I have no quality to "spare".
I've played around with countless other conversion systems, ranging in price from $79 to $399. Short verison, this is the ONLY unit to own. No dropped frames at all, even with questionable quality tapes, no jitter, great color, excellent sound quality. Zero setup with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11.
This is a prosumer deck. The time code function is alone worth the price if you have old analog footage. Absolutely NO "Out Of Sync" audio.
ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey but it WORKS.

  • Elgato EyeTV Hybrid tips & tricks

I didnt know where else to put this so im posting this here. I'm looking for any tips & tricks or whatever you want to call it with the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid for Mac. Reason this being is because im using an Xbox 360 with this and i feel my experience could be much better, with quality and responce time.
I know all the Converting/Encoding whichever is all being done by the iMac so i suppose id have to live with the response time but is there anything i can do to the settings for quality? Anything you want to suggest please do, id be happy to try it and give feedback.
    Thanks

There is no interface with the Eyetv to the Dish receiver that would permit channels to return. Your Eyetv is only as good as the channel the reciever is set to. In other words, your Eyetv will retrieve any channels that are not regulated by a reciever to interpolate them, ie: "Over the air" and/or a "straight cable connection" without a set top box. Whether it be a Dish network or a local cable company, any circumstance of a set top box will not be compatible with Eyetv for the lack of it's abilty to change the channels on that box. The only circumstance I have ever seen is when a viewing/recording device has an IR blaster that transmits the channel selection to that set top box and changes the channels much the same as you would with a remote. That being said, there is still the issue of that particular device knowing the IR codes to your particular box.
Your Eyetv is good for "Over the Air" and/or a straight Cable coax connection only. Sorry.

  • Install eyetv hybrid software on new Mac mini

I just bought the new Mac mini ( without DVD drive) and was wondering if there is any way to get the eyetv hybrid software on it?  I previously had the old Mac mini and was able to insert the DVD for the install.  I just didn't think about that before buying the new one.  I searched the Elgato site but couldn't find the software. Maybe someone her can help?
    Thank you,
    Craig

    Hello Craig,
Do you have another Mac you can use Disk Utility on to make a DMG of the Install Disc, & move that to the new Mini?

  • Eyetv hybrid on intel imac

was wondering how 1080i works with the 24 inch intel imac or any other size with the intel dual core processors, my G5 imac works satisfactory but the specs on my eyetv hybrid is for a dual processor for 720p and 1080i signals from over the air digital tv, that is free by the way. Occasionaly my imac G5 will skip frames but the audio rarely goes out and I can't have anything else running when I use eyetv hybrid otherwise lots of skipped frames and audio drop-outs.
Please let me know, thank you.....

Works great on my mini and my iMac.
I sometimes surf the net during commercials without any issues.

  • EyeTv Hybrid Disaster

I just received my EyeTv Hyrbrid in the mail. I plugged it in went through the set-up and I got nothing. It recognizes none of my channels. I have Time Warner Cable. It hook directly into the wall with no box. Any suggestions on how to get this to work?

My guess is your Cable company scrambles their signals. I used Cox Cable and I called them and even though they said they didn't scramble their signals after I plugged in my EyeTv it only recognized about 6 channels. I have since installed a HDTV over the air antenna and I am very pleased with the EyeTv Hybrid.

  • EyeTV Hybrid users?

Im sorry if this is in the wrong thread. Does anyone here have the EyeTV hybrid and have a game console connected through it?
And if so, is it possible for the my Macbook Pro to play console games through the screen in 720p or 1080i
I know Eyetv supports these formats through cable and satelite but Im tech ******** and am looking for answers because the Elegato website is sparse with answers on this. Thanks!

I haven't used it much yet, but did hook it up to an external HD antenna. The picture was great, and the recording/playback very intuitive.
I tested it on my MBP, but waiting to install for the long-term on my Dual G5 machine (more storage there).
The Hybrid also comes with an IR remote, which is nice.
I haven't yet tested the TV listings service.
Yes. It would be cool to have a mini sling-box type option for this thing ..

  • EyeTV Hybrid - burning recorded TV to DVD

Hello, I was going to post this in the User Tips section but that section has had a bug all day and has not let me post. Anyway, does anybody know if you can burn recorded content from EyeTV Hybrid with iDVD already installed with OSX, or do you HAVE to purchase Toast? Toast is an awesome tool, but this is for my mother computer and she does not need/would not use any of its features.
On the website (http://www.elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyetvhybridna) it does say you need Toast to burn shows to DVD to watch on your TV, I'm just wondering if that really is the only way. It seems like the iLife apps could handle this task.
    Thanks

I don't know just how to explain a disk image, except when you open one, it become like a separate hard drive. If you are in iDVD, go to the File Menu, and down to Save as Disk Image. Save this on your desktop. Then, from the finder window, go to the Go Menu, down to Utilities, and open Disk Utility. You will want to open the disk image by double clicking it. Then, burn it from Disk Utility. If you search the Knowledge Base, or the iDVD discussions section, I'm sure there is a better explanation.
    Good luck!

  • EyeTV Hybrid Help (UK)

    Hi
Just purchased an EyeTV Hybrid so I can watch the digital Freeview channels
here in the UK but I cannot seem to recieve them.
I do a scan and it just picks up the 5 analogue channels, then gives a message - Switching to analogue.
I have it setup on an indoor ariel not 20 feet away from a TV that works on digital via an indoor ariel with no problems.
AM I doing something wrong here, does the EyeTV need a powerboosted indoor ariel, or do I need to connect a freeview box to it ?
Sorry to sound stupid but I am new to this.

    Hi
Seeing as this crazy forum does not allow editing after about 20 seconds I go to post again.
Just wondering, do I have to use the Tvtv service that come with it to use freeview ?

  • EyeTV Hybrid + HD cable box

    Hello all,
I recently purchased a 20'' iMac with the EyeTV Hybrid to watch tv on my Mac. For the money I paid for it, the performance is great. When I go full screen however, it seems that there is a decent amount of clarity lost in the picture.
Currently I run the cable wire straight from the wall into the hybrid. My question is, if I get a high definition box from my cable provider and run that into the hybrid, will my full screen picture improve drastically?
    Thanks in advance for replies.

If you are going right from the wall to the Hybrid, you are not delivering an HD signal to it. All HD over cable that I know of requires a decoder box.
Now you can plug in an HD antenna to the Hybrid and get the free over the air broadcast HD signal and that will be better.
Right now it sounds like you are just getting the SD content. HD will make a big difference.

  • USB port issues (hub, EyeTV Hybrid, speakers)

Balky USB ports continue to be a problem with me. Not to get off subject, but I had a horrible time with my old iBook that one day decided it didn't like to recognize my iPod Shuffle.
Now I've got a new MBP that doesn't seem to want to play nice with my Kensington USB pocket hub, Altec Lansing XT1 speakers and, particularly, an EyeTV Hybrid that worked great at install and ever since has shown as No Device Found.
I've tried restarting, plugging in devices in various sequences, resetting PRAM and performing an exorcism. I can get the speakers to work, and the hub with some effort. But I can't get the EyeTV Hybrid to make an encore appearance to save my life.
    Thoughts?

My USB hub does have external power, but the issue with the EyeTV Hybrid continues regardless of whether it is connected to the hub or directly to either of the computer's two USB ports.
I'm tempted to think I just need to replace the EyeTV unit, but I have had so many problems with Apple USB ports, I thought somebody out there might have found some solutions. They have been extraordinarily finicky about what they play nice with, it seems to me.

  • TVBook Pro vs EyeTV Hybrid?

    TVBook Pro or EyeTV Hybrid?
Hi guys, I've just purchased an EyeTV Hybrid but I'm considering returning it and getting instead a TVBook Pro (by Miglia), and some thoughts come to my mind:
    1. I'd free up the usb port currently used by the EyeTV Hybrid (good thing)
    2. EyeTV Hybrid offers an advantage, which is that in addition to digital television you can receive analog signal and you can connect your cable-box or DVD player, which is also good, but I don't really think I'll ever use it as here, where I live, I have no cable service and I don't really think I'll subscribe to one.
    3. EyeTV's got another advantage, which is that it can be used with any Mac with a USB port, not only with the MBPs, as opposed to the TVBook Pro that can only connect via the ExpressCard/34 slot.
    4. TVBook Pro takes less space as most of it is hidden within the computer.
    5. I got the EyeTV Hybrid from an Apple Store, do you think I'll be able to return it even having open the EyeTV (software) packaging? That's of paramount importance because if not, then this is the end of the story.
    6. Has anyone a feedback on the performance of the TVBook Pro? I must admit, I'm quite happy with the quality of the signal I've seen using the EyeTV Hybrid. I know, I know, that's got a lot to do with the antenna.
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

  • EyeTV Hybrid USB error

Hi, I use EyeTV Hybrid on my Imac. Since some time when I turn on the tv, it doesn't work. I get the message: 'The EyeTV Hybrid device will not operate because it is connected to a USB 1.1 port.' etc. As you know the Imac has USB 2.0 and before everything was working fine. Please tell me what is wrong.
    Kind regard
    Bernard Jas

    Hi Bernard/Txau-me,
The problem with these devices is cold solder joints - breaks in the 'welds' between components inside the tuner.
Heating the device (as works for some) temporarily expands the components - pressing the broken solder joints back together (until the device cools - and the components shrink back, breaking the joint again).
The only way to permanently fix this is by 'reflowing' (melting) the solder joints back together. I have fixed my Eyetv Hybrid by doing the following (caveat: This method could also break it permanently i.e even heating it up wont make it work - I took the gamble because I was tired of blow drying my Eyetv every day just to watch TV for an hour :P ) :
    1. Preheat your (electric - NOT gas) oven to 200c (~385f) - solder will only melt and be able to rejoin above 185c.
    2. Remove the plastic cover from your Eyetv (pressing the sides in a gently prise apart the case). You will melt this part if you don't remove it first.
*!! IMPORTANT !! - DO NOT* move the tuner while it is cooking or cooling down!! It will fall apart.
    3. Place the tuner on a folded piece of aluminium foil, and put on the middle rack in the oven. Cook for ~12 minutes.
    4. Turn off the oven and let cool completely.
    5. Remove the tuner, replace the plastic cover and enjoy pain free TV.
Good luck - let me know if this works for you.

  • EyeTV Hybrid / iSight driving me CRAZY!

I am trying to broadcast something on uStream.tv by using my EyeTV Hybrid.
The only choices uStream is giving me (as hardware installed) is a firewire input, dv input, and usb input. The USB input shows video / audio from my iSight. I want the video and audio to come from the EyeTV Hybrid instead. Any ideas on how to solve this??

    You're welcome, Urko.
Well done tracking down the source of the conflict!
FWIW, today I checked Focusrite's support pages and note that Scarlett 2i2/usb does NOT appear on the their list of products known to be compatible with Mac OS X Lion: http://www.focusrite.com/answerbase/en/article.php?id=1159
However, I did find several Focusrite articles concerning the Scarlett USB 2.0 Range products: http://www.focusrite.com/answerbase/en/category.php?id=108.   Article titles from that page, including "Scarlett 2i2", "Using iSight/Facetime HD webcam with your interface on a Mac", or "Latency issues using a Scarlett with Logic", may give you some cither ideas.
If properly applying the 10.7.5 Combo Update doesn't solve your problem, and if you don't get the real solution from info you find here, I agree that your best bet is direct help from Focusrite. They should best be able to tell you how to use their product with your Mac system.  http://us.focusrite.com/contact-support
