EyeTV USB tuners

I was curious if anyone here has these, and how they perform on a macbook. They seem too good to be true, being able to receive HD TV channels on a macbook. I wasn't sure how well they work, or which one I should get. I think the EyeTV Diversity one would be best, as it has two antennas, and can get stronger signal/better picture. I wanted to know how well they would work on my macbook while riding in a car.

My Elgato Diversity works perfectly.

Anyone have an EyeTV USB tuner?

Since I'm rather pressed for space (and because my future roomie at SUNY Albany has already decided he hates me...but that's another story), I've been looking around for a TV tuner. I'm just curious if anyone out there has one of these things. I just ordered my 17" MBP, and I'm trying to load up on accessories before it arrives (supposedly by the 17th). Hey, 17 on 17. Mythbackend and hauppage USB tuner problems

I'm coming from using ubuntu for the last year and I've switched over to arch around a month ago. Everything on my server is running nicely and I've learnt more about Linux in the last few weeks than I did in a year of ubuntu, but I've got one last little problem I can't wrap my head around.
Please bear with me because I'm no where near my pc ( and won't be untill the weekend, but I've got remote ssh access to it if needs be )
with ubuntu I've been using a hauppage wintv nova T500 pci and a wintv USB stick. The pci card mounts itself as 2 USB tuners. I've loaded the firmware for the tuners (they both use the same firmware) and they show up when I check lsusb and dmesg.
I've tried mythtv from the repo and mythtv .22 built from the aur, both are giving me the same problem.
Mythbackend is loaded as a daemon in my rc.conf file and it loads fine but then errors out as it can't find any tuners. the only way I can get myth to work is to unplug the USB tuner and pci card, remove mythbackend from my daemons and when I start the pc up plug the USB tuner in after I get to the command prompt then manually start mythbackend. This way it works fine everytime but I can't use the pci tuner as I don't fancy plugging that in while the pc's on
any help would be Appreciated as it's driving me nuts, I can grab any logfiles anyones after once I finish work (posting this from my phone at work)

thats just the usb tuner plugged in, i took the pci one out before i left for the week.
to me it looks as if its registered properly and everythings fired in. But like i said im new to Arch and i was kinda used to just plugging stuff into ubunutu and it automagically working

the wire on the built in tuner on my hp touchsmart broke off. i want to replace the tuner with a usb tuner is this possible?

It won't be a 2nd tuner if as you said the primary tuner is broken.

USB or 1394 inputs for video?

I'm looking digitize some footage to my MBP from some VHS tapes, some DVDs, and TV on my DVR box. So either component S-Video or composite signal to some device. Called "encoding" right?
I don't want to burn DVDs on my recorder and then rip the VOB files with a 3rd party software. Looking at buying either: EyeTV USB converter sold at the Apple store or a Grass Valley box that outputs to 1394 firewire (400 and 800). Twice the cost, but better fps and quality on the Grass Valley?
USB or firewire? Which MBP input is best to use this purpose?

If your plan is just to digitize the video for watching on your computer, then the EyeTV 250 Plus will be fine.
On the other hand, if you want to edit the videos, then the Canopus (Grass Valley) box is the way to go.
The price difference isn't 2x. The EyeTv 250Plus is running about $165 vs. the Canopus ADVC-110 about $195 (at B&H PhotoVideo).
If you were talking about the EyeTV Hybrid, I wouldn't even bother; it's primarily intended for watching TV on your Mac.

EyeTV for bondi iMac?

Hi All,
I'm looking to use EyeTV with my Bondi iMac (rev B). Is there a certain model I should use? Obviously firewire is out of the question but is there a way round the USB 2.0 version so that it will work with my standard USB port? Or is there a USB 1.0 version available?

I have used the eyeTV USB device and the eyeTV 410 (digital TV firewire model in the UK) with a PowerMac G5 and have been impressed with both models. The 410 has been excellent and very reliable.
The eyeTV software (which is the same for all models) is very good, the editing software being particularly good and I would also recommend getting Toast which then makes making DVDs very easy.

EyeTV files sizes and types?

Hi,
Thinking of getting and EyeTV for use in the UK and with digital FreeView channels.
What sort of files does it generate?
Is it just a QuickTime file that can be played on any Mac?
What size files do you get for an average 30 mins show?
The reason I need to know is the TV I record will be sent to my friend in Canada to watch on their 20" iMac G5, I have a fixed IP and a 8MB pipe so they can log into my Mac and just download the shows they want.
What is the quality like I have the Formac DV studio with a TV tuner and the quality is bad all noise and interference lines in the images. Dont use it any more.
Any views are appreciated

The eyeTV 410 is a great piece of kit and I use mine all the time.
It records in a MPEG 2 format which can then be exported in a range of different file formats if required.
As it is native MPEG 2 format, combine it with Toast and it makes it very easy to burn DVDs of your recordings.
As it is MPEG 2 you can not play the native files using Quicktime (however the eyeTV software can play them). If you export as MPEG 2 then you will need the MPEG 2 component for Quicktime, or play them with VLC.
A 30 min show is approx 500MB.
However if you export to another format then you will be able to compress that file size.
The eyeTV 410 is four times the quality of my eyeTV USB which recorded analogue.

Watch tv w/tuner on Imac, what software to use

I have a 20" Imac Intel and i have a universal usb tv tuner i had with a Dell laptop for work. If I connect it to my iMac, could i be able to watch tv with it? and if so what program or software would I need to do so.

eyetv 2 or 3 is as probably the best tv app out there for the mac
others are available but i have never used them but i can certainly vouch for eyetv as ive been using it for 3 years now and totally replaced the house tv with it

What programs can I watch with macbook tvtuners?

I am studing in UK (Oxford) and living in a college house where we have to share one tv in a common room among 20 students - which is fun but sometimes getting difficult.
So I thought I could buy one of those small USB tuners and connect it to my macbook to be able to watch for example BBC News in the morning.
So my question is:
1. Which tvtuners could you recommend?
2. I have heard a lot about EyeTV Hybrid but what programs will I be able to watch with it - assuming that I don't have cable tv in my room and I will have to connect an antena (do I have to buy it seperatly - if yes then which one is the best)

I'd reommend you look at the TV tuners from Elgato assuming you have a Mac.
You can basically watch any Freeview (Google it) terrestrial digital channels (or analogue ones if you get the EyeTV hybrid tuner) channels for nothing (your house (or even room) will need a TV licence though).
You will not be able to watch most pay per view digital terestrial channels like TopUpAnytime / TCM and probably other like Setanta Sports.
The EyeTv hybrid comes with a tiny aerial about 8" high - works reasonably well, but it will all be down to reception in your room/area how good this is. If it's poor you'll need a proper aerial feed or perhaps an extension co-axial cable to get a better position.
Yes you can watch BBC News and other BBC feeds.
Miglia also make Apple compatible TV tuner cards - they probably work well too, main difference is likely to be software.
BTW Elgato have just released EyeTV software version 3 so you may want to wait a bit or it'll cost to upgrade, though 2 works pretty well.

Power Mac G5 Dual Core freezing

Hi,
Everything works fine with my G5 with 4GB RAM, except one thing:
Sometimes when I work for a long time, my mouse justs freeze,
The red light near the RAM slots appears and the fans start being noisy ! (LED 7—Checkstop: red—contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider)
I reboot and all just works fine until the next freeze
I ran Hardware test and apple diagnotics many times but all the tests including the ram test passed successfully.
It happens like 1 or 2 time by day. I couldn't identify the cause or the frequency of the problem (maybe Eyetv usb box, or a spécific app that causes the computer freezing ??? !)

Power Mac G5 Dual Core 2,3 Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Curiously - we have two new Dual 2.3 G5s and they exhibit this same behavior. Suddenly freezing - and not necessarily while we have a lot of apps running. iTunes is always going in the background though. I'll start monitoring the temps on these machines and we'll see what happens. Does anyone know of a menubar app that might display CPU temp on the fly? Could be useful if we see a spike in temperature and then a crash.
One notable thing though, when it does crash, it crashes hard. Everything freezes, the audio (since iTunes is usually running) begins to skip on the last section of the track it was playing, sort of like a skipping record - only much faster. It also appears to have happened to one of the machines last night while it was asleep. I came in the morning the the fans were going crazy - and yes, the little red LED was on. What does that mean?

TV and games on your iMac G5, help please!

I want to watch Digital TV and play my games console on my G5. I have found the "EyeTV for DTT" by Elgato which has Digital TV but no connections for my games console. If I get an adapter which converts my game console outputs (yellow/red/white connections) to USB can I use the software for the "EyeTV for DTT" to access the picture from my games console without recording the picture? If so how would I be able to do it, will the software automatically recognise the games console?
P.S. I no there is another box called the "EyeTV Wonder USB 2.0" which has game console inputs but ONLY analogue TV and I want Digital.

The eyeTV DTT picture quality (if it is the same as the 410) is four times the quality of the eyeTV analogue picture quality.
On my blog entry you can see a screen shot of a 410 image capture, when operating in full screen I can certainly notice issues with the picture quality.
I don't have the eyeTV Wonder, I do have the older eyeTV USB model and I suspect that the quality of the console image will be fine in a window and noticeable at full screen. Remember consoles are designed to work on TVs not computer screens.

CarbonCore stops working

I have a Mac Mini Server that now fails regularly. They symptom is always the same - at some point osascript crashes continuously and all GUI apps, including Crash Reporter, crash on launch. Apps already running are OK as long as they don't need to launch any helpers. The one common part of all logged crashed for all applications is this:

Both mounted volumes verify as OK. Time Machine keeps running fine and I can 'ls -lRe /' fine. I can't find any other errors in other logfiles and I have no idea what FSMount is doing. When the problem is active, I don't see anything unusual when running 'fs_usage'. Logging in remotely and issuing 'reboot' is the only fix I've found.
Any ideas on what to look at next?

The boot volume is a software RAID 0 of the internal drives, a Drobo FW800 is mounted for media files, and a LaCie 5big NAS is a TM backup. All are working and pass verification in diskutil during the failure. No I/O errors are logged anywhere for either of them.
After rebooting, everything is working except for this repeating error:
Pixelmemory servermgrd[73]: servermgr_info: unexpected Software Update state: crashed
I also see continuous errors for some daemons about my server not being a directory master. It's not supposed to be a directory master so I don't know why they are having problems with that.
There have been two recent changes so I may try reverting them: Elgato EyeTV (USB + DVR software) and a new CyberPower UPS (USB only). The failures didn't happen until over a month after those changes, though.
I hate rebooting to fix this because it breaks Jumbo Frames sometimes. I might have to reboot three times in a row. ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2303453&tstart=0 )

[Solved] mythtv-setup DVB (could not get card info/No such device)

I'm building a new Arch server which will replace my existing mythtv backend using a HP microserver. Other than my old machine not being updated in some time, the only difference is new box is 64bit. I have 2x Sony PlayTV USB DVB's and have left one plugged into each system.

Edit: I should add that I did a trial install of Ubuntu 12.04, upto date as of few days ago and it worked perfectly though I didn't note down what kernel version (was 64bit). Nothing has changed hardware wise.

It seems to affect dvb usb devices. I didn't see any evidence of this patch http://patchwork.linuxtv.org/patch/13563/ in current kernels, but it may have been rewritten. I haven't had to change my card setup and don't have usb tuners, so I haven't hit this problem.

I did stumble upon the femon thing at some point but I didn't see any explanation for it and all my googling for femon resulted in a plugin for VDR which totally had me stumped. After your post a tried a slightly different google string and found it was in the linuxtv-dvb-apps package. In hindsight a "pacman -Qo femon" would have given me the answer...

IMac and Virgin Media TiVo

Hi all, this may be a stupid question but is there a way of connecting a late 2009 iMac 27" to a Virgin Media TiVo box?
Currently we watch Freeview through EyeTV USB connected to rooftop arial.

Well this is the whole issue - apparently this will only work FROM the iMac TO and HDMI device, i.e. large screen etc to watch something played on the Mac on a larger screen etc.
Apparently the MDP will only accept MDP signals when sending data IN so if you are sending something FROM an HDMI port TO the MDP you will need a converted as it appears to only recognise MDP signals ie other MBP or iMacs etc.
But again, I dont know this so I am asking to see if anyone has experience.
JUst a bit of background, I do not own a TV and cant afford one right now. The Virgin Media service has only been preordered and has to be installed so there is time to cancel it should i find out that I cannot make this work.
I havent tried any of this but am researching to see if it is possible so I know whether to start the tivo service or not or to cancle it.
You might ask why am i using an iMAc as a TV, well we have all the other iDevices at home and it is currently already been used as a TV through the Elgado EyeTV USB stick to watch freeview.

Elgato EYE TV EZ Experience

I have been thinking about Elgato product for my iMac G5 but i am not sure about the efficiency/quality of TV adaptor for Desktops
Has anyone experience the eye TV EZ? I am quite interested about this one to use TV and most of it plug in a Nintendo, but not got the best feedback.
Is it really nice and fast stuff like elgato pretends?

I currntly own a EyeTV USB, an older model, while I'm not going to tell you that I have HD quality, it is a clearer picture than what you'd get on you run of the mill TV connected to a cable box.
on an iMac, you'll notice the fans rev up a little higher than normal.. the EyeTV is software driven not hardware driven, so it'll tend to get the system quite hot if running for hours on end. Though, it'll be fine to watch an evening of prime time TV, just don't leave it running all night as you may eventually fry something. (like a G5 CPU)
If you do get this Elgato product and you do accidently leave it on over night and wind up with unusually fast running fans, shutt off the iMac and manually restart the system holding the power button until it makes a funny beep noise. This will reset the section of the mother board that controls the system fans.
