EZ Quest Firewire 400 ext drive works in 10.4 (PPC) but won't mount in 10.6 (Intel)

I have an EZ Quest external FireWire 400 drive. Was working fine on my MDD Mac running OS X 10.4.11. NOW, when I hook it up to my iMac running OS X 10.6.8, it will not mount. Tried different ports. Tried device on and off at boot. Doesn't show up on desktop or in sidebar of finder window or in System Profiler. Drive powers up, but won't mount. Please help. Thanks. Dennis

I have the same problem. Two different EZQuest Quad interface drives suddenly won't mount on my 2010 iMac (Core Duo) via the firewire 800 or 400 ports. If I use a USB cable, both drives mount as normal, but I need the Firewire 800 ports to stream audio samples for Logic.
Both of these drives were working fine for over a year until I upgraded recently to 10.6.8 on the iMac and then tried to use one of the drives yesterday with a new 2012 MacBook Pro (10.7.4). The drive mounted once on the MacBook Pro, then disappeared and now will not mount on either the MacBook Pro or my iMac.
I tried resetting the PRAM and SMC on the iMac, but the drives still won't mount via firewire. The fact that both EZQuest drives still mount via USB indicates this is a firewire problem particular to Mac OS 10.6.8 and 10.7 rather than an external drive problem. It also seems that many people are experiencing this regardless of the external drive brand. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Do all FireWire 400 audio interfaces work on a FireWire 800 bus?

I have assumed that one can continue to use FW400 on the new MacBookPros with an adapter cable. But responding to a post where I noted that I was unable to daisychain an RME FW 400 to a FW800 harddisk, a forum member tells me that many FW400 audio-interfaces don't work on FW800 buses, and thus even an adapter cable would'nt work.
Is this true?
If so, the whole music/audio community on Mac will have to switch to PC, no other solution.

Although there might be a few specific devices that might have trouble, most firewire 400 devices will work with an adapter to 800. And unlike what a bunch of people on this forum complain about, having a 400 device chained with an 800 WILL NOT slow the 800 down. A few minutes doing some simple research on how firewire works would stop people from spreading incorrect information.

Possible but unlikely. PATA drive remain less expensive in bulk and PATA ->FW enclosures are more mature and wide spread than SATA->FW. Larger drive cap. drives are more likely to be SATA.

External Firewire drives power up, but won't mount.

I wanted to see if anyone else is having this problem. I recently upgraded my mom's laptop to OSX Lion after she experienced a lot of problems with Snow Leopard. All updates available from Software Update have been installed. Now 2 issues have arisen after the new install: 1) the FW 800 and 400 ports appear to be non-functional, and 2) the OS takes about 10 minutes to boot up to the desktop.
1) Regarding the FW ports: I have a couple external Firewire 800 hard drives that I use on other Macs so I know they're fully operational and mount without any issues. They're both 5400RPM drives that have been inserted into Macally external enclosures, and are of different capacities - one is 320GB and the other is 500GB. The enclosures offer FW 800, 400, USB 2.0 and mini-USB connectivity. But after upgrading the laptop I mentioned, neither of the drives will mount when using the FW 800 or 400 cables. They power up but won't mount, and they don't show up in the list in Disk Utility. However, the drives will power up and mount via USB.
I realize the laptop may have a hardware/port problem - but both 800 and 400 ports? Seems unlikely.
2) Any idea why it's taking the OS 10 minutes to boot up? I've shut down the laptop and rebooted it twice since the OS install, and both times took 10 minutes.
I may just install Lion on one of the hard drives, pull it and then pop it into the laptop to see if that makes any difference. Before I do that, can anyone recommend a hardware utility that can check the ports?

Ext HD recognized but won't mount

Trying to use my firewire/usb ext HD. It is recognized in disc utility and system profiler, but won't mount. I honestly can't remember whether the HD was disconnected or turned off before unmounting, but that's my suspicion. Tried connecting through usb---nothing. I've tried repairing with disc utility, but still nothing. I even had my neighbor plug it into his pc which wasn't any help (but nevermind that). Any advice?

Hi, Jason. Is the drive powered by its own AC adapter, or is it a bus-powered unit? If the latter, its power requirements may exceed what the bus can provide, and the solution will be to power it externally (or if there's no place on it to plug in an AC adapter, replace its enclosure with one that can be powered externally).
Spinning up but failing to mount is classic behavior for a bus-powered drive that exceeds the bus's power budget. That your drive won't mount when connected either through a FW or a USB port strongly indicates that it isn't your connecting cable(s) at fault, since the likelihood that both types of cable are bad is very small.
You don't say whether the drive was recognized by the PC you connected it to. Was it?
Has this drive ever mounted properly on your Mac's desktop, or is it a new drive that has never been formatted on a Mac? Is Disk Utility able to format it (as Mac OS Extended) or not?

Hi, I have a MacBook I bought in 2008. The FireWire specs say " Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec"
I am considering a new external hard drive (the Iomega MiniMax) and want to use Firewire for this one. The specs for the hard drive say: "The MiniMax includes 2 fast FireWire 800 interfaces, a USB 2.0 hub, plus a FireWire 400 to 800 cable."
Will this FireWire 400 to 800 cable allow me to plug my FireWire 400 laptop port to this FireWire 800 harddrive port? It sounds like it will but I wanted a sanity check before I order it.

Firewire 400 External Drive Not Recognized in Yosemite

I have a Fantom external hard drive that is plugged into my Mac mini. The external hard drive uses the old firewire 400 standard. The mac mini only has a firewire 800 standard port. I have an adaptor to bridge the two, and this worked fine until I updated to Yosemite. Now the drive isn't recognized. Can anyone offer suggestions on what to do to get this drive to work on this computer?? None of the other macs in my house even have a firewire 800 port anymore.

my issue is... my fire wire 400wont read any firewire 400 device, but my 800 port works fine. however, e wheni route my f 400 devices through my 800 drive, or port, the 800 device is ultimately disengaged ( removed) by the system.
i can understand that a 400 port may be wear out but why would the dv cam or other device, routed through an 800, force the 800 device to shut down. in this case i am uising a power book 15 inch, 1.5 gig, with a lacie porsche 250 gig external 400 firewire ( wont read at all) and a lacie 800 firewire 200 gig drive.
seems to me that since the 800 reads fine, that a 400 device routed through it should be okay too.
any helpwould be greatly appreciated.
also the system profiler doesnt recognize a 400port, but does list an 800 port.

FireWire ports can be reset. Shut down the computer, disconnect all peripheral devices, remove the power cord and the battery. Wait twenty minutes, then restart the computer and check the port. If it still doesn't work, reset the Power Management Unit (PMU) according to the instructions for your specific model.
If neither of these steps help in your situation, then you will need to take the machine in for service.

Firewire 400 & 800 not working together

I have two 800 firewire external drives connected to my Macbook Pro. They're plugged into wall outlets. I also have my DVCAM deck connected via a 400 firewire cable. If the 400 is connected, one or both of the 800s disappears and vice versa. How can I have both the 400 and the 800s connected at the same time? I must have them connected simultaneously.

Okay. So, changing the FCP FW device didn't do anything noticeable right now. But I'm keeping it at that setting. I daisychained the old 400/800 drive to the 800 drives, using the 400 cable from my hub, which holds my printer and my deck, and the drive didn't like that--it didn't show up. So I plugged the deck directly into that drive, and voila! all three drives show up, and FCP is recognizing my deck. Great! Now I'm going to find out if there's room for another firewire card in the Macbook Pro. I'll let you know.

USB Hi-Speed vs FireWire 400 external drive write speed comparison

Since there were a host of external hard drive questions, I thought I'd just try out my own speed test while I'm watching TV in the background.
The drives I used were a bus-powered 250 GB LaCie Little Disk USB Hi-Speed + FireWire 400, and an adapter-powered 320 GB Western Digital MyBook Home USB Hi-Speed + FireWire 400 + eSATA. I judged the speed by running Activity Monitor and checking for Disk Activity's Data written/sec. There didn't appear to be much else happening, so I thought that the average rate was an accurate indicator. I plugged them directly into my MacBook's ports (no hubs or daisy-chaining).
_LaCie Little Disk (using the USB power-sharing cable made no difference - I tried both):_
USB: 23-25 MB/sec.
FW400: 32-33 MB/sec
_Western Digital MyBook Home (7200 RPM):_
USB: steady 27 MB/sec
FW400: 32-33 MB/sec
So definitely FireWire won out, although I wasn't getting the same speeds as advertised. WD doesn't specify anything other than the interface's raw speed, and of course those are never achieved for bulk transfers due to negotiations, overhead, etc. LaCie advertises up to 41 MB/sec for FW400 and up to 34 MB/sec for USB.
I found it a little bit strange that the LaCie drive was a bit slower with USB than the WD drive, but that could have to do with the particular chipset used.

Will G3 Mac pro recognize large firewire 400 hard drive

I have an older G4 Mac Pro and I'm wondering if I can connect/use a larger hard drive via firewire 400. I understand there is a limitation on the size of drive attached internal, but does the same limit apply to firewire attached drives?

I have two FireWire 400 ports that aren't working. I normally use the FireWire 800 port, which works fine.
I've tried:
- Resetting the NVRAM
- Resetting the PRAM
- Resetting the SMU
I haven't been able to run Apple Hardware Test, it is not on my install disc and I must have lost the separate Apple Hardware Test CD... annoying!
1) First Question - Can I do any more to fix the FireWire ports?

What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device...
If the issue persists, try these steps:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Disconnect all devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).
3. Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.
4. Plug the computer back in and turn it on.
5. Reconnect the device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each port if you have more than one.

FireWire 400 & 800 Not working

I am hoping someone can help. I have an iMac running leopard 10.5.7. I had a MyBook 1TB hooked up via Firewire and piggy backed off of that was a WD 500gb firewire passport. Everything worked fine until I tried to hot swap the passport. I unplugged it and the MyBook immediately powered down. I tried hooking both of them back up and not go. I had the WD passport replaced and turns out its the iMac firewire. The new WD passport works fine on my Mybook and all the cables I have have been tested. Neither the 400 or 800 firewire are working however the USB are working just fine.
These are some of the remidies I have tried.
- Reset the PRAM (no go)
- Reset the SCM (still no go)
- Took to the apple store the only thing the genius did was boot in to Startup Manager and plug in a firewire HD. (they claim i need a new logic board $890)
Now I am avoid replacing the logic board because I still think it isn't that big of a problem. I mean it may be shorted but from what I have read if the Firewire wasn't working it wouldn't show up in the system profiler and mine is. This is what I said

Also I ran a hardware test that came with my mac (restarting hoding down D) and it said no hardware problems.
So now I post in hopes someone may have a suggestions before I replace the logic board.

I've had this problem, it is related to built-in firewire self-resetting fuses (which go off if there was a power surge or there was a short circuit, etc.). In order to fix it, you need to power down our Mac, then DISCONNECT THE POWER MAINS (this is important or otherwise it will not work!). Let the machine be disconnected for 2-5 minutes. Connect the mains back. Voila, it should work (the fuses get reset with no power supplied)! I spent several days until I've found this solution! Good luck!

PCIe USB 3.0 Card appears in system report, but won't mount drives

Bought an Orico PME-4U USB 3.0 4-port PCIe card with the Sata power cable.
Installations seems to go okay -- the card is powered by one of the empty hard drive bays. The card appears in my computer's System Report as follows:

When I plug in external drives, they receive power from the card, but nothing will mount.
Is it a faulty card? This is the second USB 3.0 card I've tried unsuccessfully.

Orico tech support had nothing to add beyond installing "GenericUSBXHCI.kext" and trying out different PCI slots.
I've tried two brands of PCIe USB 3.0 cards now and neither work.
I've also checked the SATA power cable and it works with the 4-port Firewire 800 PCIe card I have, so it's not that.
Anybody have any ideas?
