F ireWire 400 to 800 cable issues

Hi Forum,
after getting my new Mac Pro 8 core with Snow Leopard I have connected my FireWire Devices with help 0f 400 to 800 cables as there is no FW 400 port anymore. My Devices are an Elgato EyeTV 200 and a MOTU ultralight.
The EyeTV device is not recognized and the MOTU does appear in the system profiler but not in the in the Audio Midi Setup....
Are you aware of any issues with that kind of cables?
Thanks
Oliver

Hi!
I am not sure if this is the right forum group, but a quick question:
Did you have any trouble operating / connecting your Pinnacle moviebox after installing Snow Leopard? I used it for digitising my vhs / hi8 recordings on my Leopard system, but after installing Snow Leopard on my MacBook, it has stopped working.

  • Firewire 400 to 800 cable not working

    Hi
I have just bought a third party Firewire 400 to 800 cable to connect from my Lacie drive's 800 port to the 400 port on my iBook. When I do this, the drive does not mount at all.
    Does anyone know why?

    Aldo

iBook forum this is not. Mac Pros are towers like G5 only Intel.
I would avoid LaCie, but that is me. Also, is the drive bus powered? not good. Have a good power supply?
    What did you do last?
    Have you run Disk Warrior?
Take the cable back and pick up new FireWire 400 case.

    they have cables also.

  • IPod Connector To Firewire 400 or 800 Cable?

Does such a thing exist? An iPod Dock Connector cable to either Firewire 400 or 800? I've run out of spare USB 2.0 ports on the back of my iMac, but both of my Firewire ports are still available. It would be great if I could connect my iPod Touch to one of these. Is it possible, or do iPods only work with USB 2.0 connections?

I quite agree. Three USB2.0 is extremely paltry, as many as eight would be still be sensible IMHO. I wonder if there are any iMac users without USB hubs.
I'm currently looking at one of these:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ministack/
It adds a USB2.0 hub, Firewire Hub and as much external storage as you need (Time Machine etc). Many of these will sit nicely on the iMac's plinth beneath the screen.

  • FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter issue

I recently got a new MacPro (model is in my signature).
    My setup:
I am using a Sony DSR-11 Deck to capture my footage. This deck connects via FireWire 400. The new mac does not have a FireWire 400 port. In anticipation of this, I bought a FireWire 9-6 Adapter (400 to 800).
    My Problem:
I am getting "dropped frames" error when trying to import footage.
    Possible Solution:
My guess is I will have to get a FireWire 400 PCI Express 2.0 card (if they make them).
    My Question:
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what was your solution? Do you know of a FireWire 400 card that works in the new MacPro that you would recommend?

I used a device as simple as this ->
    http://www.amazon.com/Firewire-800-9-6-Adapter-Rohs/dp/B000LGGAD4/ref=pdcp_e1
And a sony HDV camera this last weekend. I captured about 4 hours of stuff and didn't have a problem. This was to an iMac even. I know this doesn't solve your problem but I thought I'd highlight that it can work.
Apple even sells the Belkin cable (not that that is any proof) and I would think that if you using the right deck control setup the adaptor/cable should work.

  • Has anyone use FireWire 400-800 cable to hook up their "old" FW400 devices?

    Hello all.
Just wanna find out if anyone has started to use a FireWire 400 to 800 cable to hook up their existing FW400 external devices (like hard drives, etc) to the new Mac mini
Appreciate any feedback, performance. Thanks and cheers

Remember that the external iSight is a discontinued product and apple no longer support it. So they probably only gave the FW bus enough juice to power portable hardrives. Most other FW devices have their own power anyway.
I have seen this behaviour before with FW video capture devices. The manufacturers did not supply a psu with the device but there was a powersocket on the device should your mac not comfortably power the device you were expected to get a PSU or use a powered FW hub.

  • Fire wire 400 to 800

can you use fw400 from old mac book to fw 800 external drivers i have seen adapters the other way around but not this way

    Yes, here's some on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_19?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field -keywords=firewire+400+to+800+cable&sprefix=firewire+400+to+800%2Celectronics%2C 271
Or if you just want an adapter to use an existing 800 cable http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_19?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field -keywords=firewire+400+to+800+cable&sprefix=firewire+400+to+800%2Celectronics%2C 271#/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_4_16?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=firewire+ 400+to+800+adapter+for+mac&sprefix=firewire+400+to+%2Celectronics%2C264&rh=n%3A1 72282%2Ck%3Afirewire+400+to+800+adapter+for+mac

  • No Firewire 800 Cable

I just received my Mac Pro and my 30 inch Cinema Display.
The main power cable that is attached to the back of the Display splits, and also contains a second power cable, a USB cable and a FireWire 400 cable.
The problem is that new Mac Pros have only Firewire 800 inputs. Apple says they do not make a matching cable. That's ridiculous. I connected the cables. If I keep everything as is without an attached FireWire cable, what impact will this have on viewing my video editing?

Apple says they do not make a matching cable.
If needed, purchase a FireWire 400 to 800 cable or adapter, which are also known as 6 pin to 9 pin.
If I keep everything as is without an attached FireWire cable, what impact will this have on viewing my video editing?
The only function of the FireWire ports on the display is so the display can act as a FireWire hub. If you're not connecting any other FireWire devices to the display, you don't need to hook them up. The same is true for the USB ports.

  • Firewire 800 cables aren't working...

    Hi,
I just bought a couple of Firewire (1394B) cables for my external hard drives. I've been using Firewire 400 to 800 cables without any problems, but when I connect the 800 cable, my drives will not mount on my desktop.
    Any suggestions?
I've looked on line but can't seem to find any info.
    Thanks!

Are you sure those cables are 9-pin (fw800) to 6-pin (fw400) cables? I bought a couple of 9pin/6pin cables from monoprice to hook up a couple of external fw400 drives and the cables worked fine.
Here's the link to the cable I am using:

  • I am using IMovie 11 with a new iMac.  Unable to import video from a Panasonic PV-GS400 mini-DV camcorder using a Firewire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter which is then connected to a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter.

How can I get iMovie to recognize my Panasonic PV-GS400 as a device so I can import video to my iMac?  I have a FireWire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to the camcorder.  Since my new iMac has only Thunderbolt ports, I purchased a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter to connect to the cable.  I also purchased a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to connect to the computer.  My camcarder is still not recognized.

I would suggest that you try a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable along with the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Those Firewire 400 to 800 adapters do not seem to work well with iMovie.
The 9 pin to 4 pin cables are available at reasonable prices here, for example.

  • Firewire 400 - 800 cable?

Like many people I'm surprised and a little bit disappointed that the new G5 iMacs don't have a Firewire 800 port. Then, browsing the Apple store the other day, I saw that Belkin make an 800 to 400 Firewire cable. Is this cable for real? How can a cable make a 400 port 800?
Graetful for any views on whether this is a useful cable or a gimmick,
    Thanks Paul

    "How can a cable make a 400 port 800?"
It can't. All it does is allow you to plug a FW800 device into a FW400 port, just like a USB/parallel adapter will allow you to use an older printer with a new Mac that does not have that parallel port.

  • Logic Pro 9.1.7 firewire 400 and 800 not working

I am having issues with Logic Pro 9.1.7 recognizing FW 400 and 800 connections, and/or my FW interface (mbox2 pro).  When I open up LP I often do not hear any sound and have to reboot or reconnect FW cables, per another post suggestion with ProTools 9.  After 30 minutes of restarting twice, unplugging / plugging in FW cables, turning off/on FW drives, it's finally up and running.
But the weird thing is that sometimes it opens up fine and other times it does not.  I don't understand this variable, as my setup always remains the same.
I am guessing this is a Mac OS issue, but I'll list my setup in case anyone has any suggestions:
    MacBook Pro OS 16.6.8
Mbox2 Pro interface (blue) - connected via FW 400
Firewire drives on both 400 and 800 connections
I realize this could be a host of issues other than Logic Pro 9, such as Audio Midi Setup (which often doesn't recognize my Mbox2 Pro).  But again, thought I'd start here.
    thanks

If Audio MIDI Setup cannot see/recognise the MBox, then Logic will be unable to see it. Audio MIDI Setup is at OS level: if your MBox does not show up it is likely to be:
    Driver issues (highly likely)
    Cable Issues
    FW socket issues: hardware fault.

  • How to tell if Firewire 400 or 800? In any OS and this laptop: Toshiba Satellite A350D - BA3.

    Hello.
I was wondering how someone can tell the difference between Firewire 400 and 800 in their computer and in this model of Toshiba laptop: Toshiba Satellite A350D - BA3?
If a person looked in device manager or something would it say? With Usb it says Enhanced when it is usb2 compared to usb1. I don't know what usb3 says, I don't have it.
With firewire there is large sizes and small. On my laptop it is a mini firewire and it looks like a 4-pin inside. On the toshiba.ca site, in the product specs, it only says firewire.
I am planning on buying a cord that has a large connection on one end and a small connection size at the other end. Eg: Some cables for firewire are a 4-4pin, 6-4pin, 6-6pin, 9-4pin,9-6pin,9-9pin. There are also firewire 400 to 800 adapters. I'd like to buy the right cord for an external enclosure I bought to connect to the small laptop firewire port. The enclosure is a Vantec NexStar 3, 3.5" enclosure, usb2, eSATA, Firewire a/b. It has two firewire b ports in back, but an included cord converts b-a (the a is still to big for the laptop firewire).
Does anyone know if any of the mini ports are as fast as the larger ports? Will a 9-pin firewire 800 cable converting to a mini connection go at the mini connections speed if it is only firewire 400, I don't think it can force full F800 speed?
    Thanks.

  • The Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 cable?

I have a JVC digital video camera, and have lost some of the cables. Will a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 cable connected with a Firewire 800 - Firewire 400 cable (same as ieee1394?) transfer the videos to my MacBook Air?

The Thunderbolt to FW 800 cable provides a FW800 port that you can plug into. You can see what it looks like here.  If you have a FW cable that will connect to your camera and terminates in a FW800 plug, that should work.

  • If I move from Firewire 400 to 800 will download speed of video increase?

    Hi,
I have just upgraded from a MacMini (which had firewire 400) to a new iMac which only has firewire 800. I have a 3 year old JVC digital camcorder (GR-D340EK) with ilink out and previously used a Belkin cable to connect to my Macmini. My question is if I now purchase an ilink to FW800 cable for the iMac will the video download at twice the rate or am I just as well to purchase a cheaper FW 400 to 800 adapter, which I understand would only give me FW400 speeds (and could be used for other devices too)?
    Any advice guys?
    Regards
    Shakey

Either way, the speed of the connection will be the same. The device itself is FireWire 400, so it will not go any faster.
You can often find the cable for about the same price as the adapter. What you need, if the camera has the smaller FireWire connector, is a 9-pin to 4-pin cable, like this one

  • Firewire 400 to 800 to Thunderbolt

I have a new Macbook pro with only thunderbolt ports. Is there a 400 to thunderbolt cable? Or do I have to use the 400 to 800 and then the 800 to thunderbolt cable?

    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/mac_accessories/cables
This is the link to Apple's on-line store. They have the cables, you would need.
Also, if you leave in an area that has some good electronic stores you can try there also.
    Hope this helps.
