F1-F12 stopped working

I installed Wine and ran a Windows program. After I quit the Windows program, F1 thru F12 stopped doing what they are supposed to do. According to showkey the keys register as they are supposed to, but I can't, for example, ctrl-alt-Fx into other terminals.
Any ideas on what wine might have changed?

Ok, I was being stupid. Took me hours to realize I had an Fn key (that I never use) pressed and it was changing the output of the function keys.
Sorry about that.

  • [SOLVED] F1, F2... F12 Stopped Working on USB Keyboard

For some reason, my F1 through F12 keys stopped working on my USB keyboard. I can't tell if it's a problem with the keyboard or with the OS. This wouldn't be much of a problem except that I can't switch ttys, leaving me unable to startx without plugging in a PS/2 keyboard.
The last time I did an update was yesterday. The F1...F12 keys were working earlier today. I run an encrypted filesystem, and my mkinitcpio hooks are:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata usb usbinput keymap encrypt filesystems"
    Any ideas?

Didn't know I had an FLock key until you wrote that... and now it works!
Even though your suggestion was obvious, I might not have figured this out for a while. Thanks for saving me some frustration.

    Dear Barney-15E,
Your answer got me on the right track.  I followed the suggestions as well as I could.  Finally I ended up holding down the fn key as I pressed f10, f11& f12.  Each one now works as it had before something happened.

  • F12 - Go To Definition has stopped working.

    Hi,
About two weeks ago the F12 ( Go To Definition) stopped working.  Instead of going to a method it takes me to a class definition [From metadata].
Does anyone know how to fix this?
I'm using VS2010 Premium and the solution is C#/ASP/.net4 if that makes a difference.
    thanks

    Hi,
If we right click and choose go to definition, can it work well?
We can check the setting of keyboard from Option->Enviroment->Keyboard. When key F12 in the Press shortcut keys, what is the shortcut currently used by?
    Best regards,

    Hi
I don't know if this will help but try please following: perform complete shutdown - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2B03EY0002R01.htm
Start notebook again and press F12. There you should find option to enter BIOS settings. Enter BIOS settings and try to enable keyboard backlight there.

  • Windows 7 - browser stops working still connected

As the title says Windows 7, browser stops working after some time passes.
This effects IE and Chrome.  I can still ping www.google.com or it's IP address.  (all other computers on the network are fine)
I've used both the wired and wireless connection without the same results.
I reboot and it works, I walk away from the work station and then boom no browsing.
I've turned off the firewall, released and renewed the IP,  netsh winsock reset none off this worked.
I've gone into internet options and ensure that no "proxy' boxes are checked.
I've uninstalled the network card drives and restarted the machine.
I've ran Malwarebytes (no infections), ccleaner to check for registry problems.  Nothing there.
I've disabled the power saving options and uncheck "let windows turn this device off"
I've also ran Norton and Mcgafee uninstallers just be sure there aren't any residue from those installed.
    No bittorrent clients
So I'm online but can't browse on this one computer?  what's the deal please Help!

ctrl+alt+del to display the tasksmanager...Processes tab,

  • Internal sound stopped working

My internal sound suddenly stopped working. I can still hear sound with headphones, but the internal speakers are not functioning. The trademark start-up sound (Beatles Day in the Life rip off) is the only sound that comes out of the MacBook. Within Systmem Preferences, Sound, the output tab reads "The Selected Device Has No Output Controls." And within Utilities, Audio MIDI Setup, Audio Devises, the Built In Input Devise is active, but the box reads that "Output Is Not Suportted." Also when I try to adjust the volume with my F10, F11 and F12 keys, the Speaker Icon is in grey, all the audio bars are in whilte and there is the small circle with line throuh it below, that would indicate mute or no sound. Looking for direction to resolve the problem. Thanks.

This also worked for me. Red light on, put in jack, wiggle, pull out jack, red light gone, volume controls and sound work again. Thanks.

  • Function keys stop working

For a while now, I've been encountering a problem where functions keys stop working. Pressing F8 (for spaces) or F12 (for widgets) will simply yield a "bonk".
Another symptom is that processes which open on a desktop other than the current one will fail to open because the desktop seems reluctant to switch.
I know other people have experienced similar problems because there is a post about spaces' keyboard shortcuts not working. The issue has not been resolved for many many weeks now.
I use a logitech wireless keyboard and trackball (with the logitech control application installed)
Sometimes this error will occur immediately after booting up. Sometimes it will go for days working fine. I consistently have 4 applications running:
    - iTunes
    - Thunderbird
    - Firefox
    - Adium
The other most common apps I run are:
    - Quicktime
    - Aperture
    - iMovie
    - Preview
Yet Another symptom of the problem is that the machine will refuse to shut down or restart. If I kill every "windowed" process in Activity Monitor, the machine will STILL fail to shut down. Ultimately, I have to do a 5-second hard power-down.
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am running into the same issue
I use a Logitech Wireless Mouse.
The switch Spaces keys, F9/F10/F11 for Expose are not working either, the Mute/F10 Vol Up, Vol Down F11 and F12 work as does the Eject button.
F18 Show Dashboard or F4 Show Dashboard don't work either.

  • Return key on iMac Keyboard Has Suddenly Stopped Working

I'm using an iMac purchased in April 2007 and it is using the older white Apple keyboard (model A1048).
All of a sudden, after a shutdown and a startup, the Return key has stopped working (the Enter key on the keypad still works).
Nothing was spilled on it and no one has hit it too hard. I popped off the key to check if there was anything that could explain why it wasn't working. No dirt and the key depresses properly.
I also took the keyboard over to a Dell PC running WinXP and tested it there as well. Every key worked except for the Return key.
So, my question is, is there some serious hardware flaw that basically means that I need to get a new keyboard or is there some other explanation and method for correcting the issue?

Having the same issue, would love to know if you were able to resolve it. I'm also not able to use Tab, Return, and F12 for some reason.

  • 17" unibody - volume keys stop working

after some time the f10/f11/f12 volume buttons stop working, (even the volume icon in the menu bar stops reacting) i have to go to sound in the system preferences pane to control the volume, or log out, after loging in they will work for a while - this can happen a few times a day
i didn't figure out what triggers them to stop working - does anybody know this problem or has a possible solution?

thank you for your reaction, it solved the problem temporarely,
    but the problem returned,
it looks as if it is triggered by using a headphone, after plugging them out, the keys don't
    work anymore
also with skype the sound acts strange, only the right speaker of the computer works - with
headphone both channels work - when i play itunes, both speakers work
i think i should do some testing with different programs and different headphones to isolate
the problem - suggestions are more than welcome

  • WiFi (Key) stopped working after upgrade to Windows 10

I thought I would post this on the forum for those who are having the same problem because help for this issue is few and far between compared to the number of pleas for assistance from HP owners. When I upgraded to Windows 10 on my Pavilion, the WiFi stopped working and I could not turn it on using the hot key (F12). I searched for answers and worked hours trying to solve it until I came upon the only suggestion that worked for me: I had to disable fast boot (power options, change what the buttons do, "change settings that are currently unavailable" (?!?)) , so I could get into the bios and then I went into the bios by pressing f10 during boot.  Reset them to defaults.  (Changed from default back to what I wanted) saved and the wifi button turned white after pressing during windows 10 boot up. EDIT: If it does not turn on right away, try turning it on through the wifi settings. I hope this can help a few, who like me, struggled endlessly for a problem that few HP mods seem to be responding to. Cheers.

Put your part number (PSKK2U-028002) in here. It will take you to a page that has 12 Windows 10-compatible downloads. Unfortunately, a WiFi driver is not one of them.
    But there is this:
Your selected Toshiba PC is supported for upgrade to Windows 10, but not all of the software for the upgrade is available at this time. Additional software will be posted here when it is ready. Please check back at a later time.

  • Dreamweaver 'Preview In Browser' Stops Working

This is DW CS6 on Windows 7.
I have several browsers set up for preview. I use the option "Preview using temporary file".
For no reason that I can figure out the preview will stop working. i.e. I hit F12 and nothing at all happens. My impression is that it will be trigered by the content of certain pages - jQuery served by CDN? or something like that? Once it starts NO pages work. If i restart Dreamweaver some pages will be OK, but then the problem will re-appear.

Thanks. I tried trashing the cache and even deleting the entire configuration folder. No joy.
But now I think I have the solution after a lot of time debugging (thanks Adobe).
    1) The problem is caused by a specific HTML file. (Though I have had different ones cause this in the past months. Presumably they have something in common).
    2) If I start DW, preview is fine. Once I try the problem file however, NO files can be previewed until I restart DW
    3) With the problem file, no 'tmp' file gets created
    4) I have CSE HTML validator. If I open the problem file in that, I can preview the page in my browser. So it's not as if the page kills the browser.
So what is it in the problem file that causes the problem?
Well the file is a Wordpress file with a "Thesis" theme, and one of the external CSS files has a long comment:
    File:            custom.css
    Description:    Custom styles for Thesis
    BASIC USAGE:
If you have enabled the custom stylesheet in the Thesis options panel, the <body> tag
will be appended with the "custom" class, like so: <body class="custom">. You can use
the "custom" class to override *any* CSS declarations contained in the style.css file.
For example, if you wish to change the default link color to green, you would add the
    following declarations to this file:
        .custom a, .custom a:visited { color: #090; }    <--- This makes links green
.custom a:hover { color: #00f; }    <--- This makes links blue when you mouse over them
    WHY THIS WORKS:
By using the "custom" class, you are creating more specific CSS declarations for HTML
elements. CSS styling is applied through rules of specificity, and because declarations
prepended with .custom are more specific, they get applied when the page is rendered!
More information about styling your Thesis installation using this file can be found
    in the User's Guide:
        http://diythemes.com/thesis/rtfm/customizing-thesis-with-customcss/
If I remove that comment, DW does not screw up.
Adobe - is anyone there? This is a bug. Can it be fixed?

  • Portege R500 - ctrl keys have stopped working

    Hi,
Both control keys have stopped working on my laptop. The fact that it is both of them suggests that it is not anything physically wrong with the key. I can't do any ctrl+letter e.g. copy, paste, select all, or even ctrl+alt+del
Can anyone suggest how to get these keys back?
    Many thanks
    Angus

    Hi
Any key combination which would disable the CTRL buttons is not known to me.
But I recommend checking the common keyboard options like FN+F10, FN+F11, FN+F12, Capslock, etc
Furthermore you could test the notebook with an external USB keyboard.
If the CTRL buttons would work using external keyboard, then this issue would be related to hardware problem.
