F10, F11 & F12 keys no longer control sound

Hello everyone,
Our MacBook's FN keys no longer control the sound. F12 was turning on the Dashboard and F11 & F10.
I thought I'd fixed that using Expose, but I don't know how to restore sound control to the keyboard.
Help!
And thank you!
Eri

I think I fixed it in Keyboard and de-selecting the Function thing.
I think it's fixed.

Is there any way to either:
    1. make the F10, F11 and F12 keys provide the mute, sound lower and sound higher functions?
that's the default isn't it? if it doesn't work for you uncheck the box "use F1..." in system preferences->keybaord&mouse->keyboard.
    2. have the sound functions assigned to other keys and leave the F10, F11 and F12 keys with their display application windows, display dock and dashboard functions?
no. you can't reassign volume shortcuts. if you check the box mentioned above you'll have to use fn+F10 etc to get to them.
I've tried various settings in System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse, but without success so far.
    Three sets of questions:
    1. Is System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse the right place to be looking?
    2. If so, how should I set the preferences to accomplish what I'm trying to do?
    3. If not, what is the correct application, and what should I specifically do?
    Thanks.

Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Universal Access pane in System Preferences, click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by Mac OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.

    Hey Bill,
Check to see if the option for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys." is turned off. When it is turned on, you would need to hold the Fn key while hitting one of those keys will make it work they way icons are displayed. To find out where this option is, go to System Preferences > Keyboard and in the Keyboard tab is where you want to be. Take a look at the article below for more information.

    Dear Barney-15E,
Your answer got me on the right track.  I followed the suggestions as well as I could.  Finally I ended up holding down the fn key as I pressed f10, f11& f12.  Each one now works as it had before something happened.

Ever since I updated my Macbook Pro, the shortcuts on the F1-F12 keys no longer work. I used to press just the F12 key and I would be able to raise the volume, now it switches to the home page. I want the old shortcuts back and I don't know how to do that. Please help.

    updated from what to what?
Suggest you try a NVRAM / PRAM reset, as described by Apple:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Keyboard sound keys not working (F10, F11 & F12)

I just purchased a wired keyboard for my iMac and can't seem to get my volume control keys (F10, F11 and F12) working.  I've unticked the "Use all F1, F2 etc" box within system preferences > keyboard, and still doesn't seem to work.  Previously I was running the wireless bluetooth keyboard and had no issues.  I'm sure it's something quite simple, but any suggestions would make my life much easier..

    HI,
    Do an Archive and Install.
    To reinstall Mac OS X:
Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will be the only one available).
Click Options. *If you want to save your existing files, users, and network settings, select “Archive and Install,” and then select “Preserve Users and Network Settings.”* If you want to erase everything on your computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select “Erase and Install.” You can’t recover erased data.
    Click Continue.
Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you’d like to install, or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).
If you purchased a standalone version of Mac OS X, these installation instructions are in a booklet PDF file located on the Mac OS X Install Disc.
If you need to reinstall the version of Mac OS X that was on your computer when you purchased it, or if you need to restore all the software on your computer, including Apple, bundled third-party applications, and printer drivers, review the instructions in the manual that came with your computer.
If you need to reinstall Mac OS X and you’ve been using Time Machine for backup, you can easily restore your applications, files, and user settings from your Time Machine backup file after you’ve reinstalled Mac OS X.

  • My screen brightness(F1,F2), Keyboard backlight(F5, F6) & volume buttons(F10, F11, F12) no longer work.

Pretty sure no major updates, installations or uninstallations have occurred since it worked last.  Under the keyboard settings, the "Use all F1, F2, etc....." is uncheck which is normal.  Keyboard settings have been reset to default with no luck on fixing the problem.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Delete the System Preferences plist per these instructions:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4301
If that does not solve the problem, I suggest a reinstall of the OSX.
    Ciao.

  • My volume (F10, F11, F12)  will not work?

I can turn the volume to mute (f10) or I can turn it on (F11,12) but it is either on mute, or full blast. i read some other posts and trashing my files did not work. It has a (like no-smoking) symbol! I can't find anything to help me anywhere else online! Can anyone help me figure this out?

Hi rkoopman & welcome to the forums
I would start by going in to System Preferences/Keyboard and see if the option to use all F keys as standard function keys is checked, then move the the Keyboard Shortcuts tab and 'Keyboard & Text Input' to see what the F key settings are there...confirm there are no conflicts with your desired sound settings.
Next go to Sound Preferences and confirm you can raise/lower the sound settings normally there.
Finally, do you have an 3rd party programs that work to modify the Finder Menu bar or keys....any chance you're using Growl, as an example?

How can I reset my keypad so that the volume controls work (f11 and F 12)?  They now toggle back and forth between dashboard

Open the Keyboard System Preferences and check to see whether the 'Use all F1,F2, etc. keys as standard function keys' option is selected. If it is, uncheck the option and see if that resolves your issue.

  • F9, F10, F11, F12 don't work after startup

Every time i reset or reboot my mac, the four functions keys are unavailable. this really frustrates me. i lose functionality and have to tick the boxes again and again.
i run os x 10.4.8., installed no widgets, but I did install (and deleted) a screensaver application. that's it. since i also installed FCP and other software and don't have an external hard disk yet, i am somewhat frightened by using the reinstall CD's; i don't want to lose any of my other software/ files. does anybody have any ideas? my gratitude would be enormous.
there's better things to do on a sunday afternoon than trying to figure out how to remove this bug...

Something may be unbinding the "F" keys. Go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES module and select KEYBOARD & MOUSE. Open KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS and verify the settings for the "F" keys in question, modify as needed.
Next thing to do if that corrects it would be to check these settings after starting an application you suspect may be doing the changes.

  • F2, F7, F8, F9, F10, F11, F12 resetting use in Windows XP

    Hey all,
I was just curious how one might change the Apple keyboard settings when in Windows XP.
I am a game designer and need to use F keys for in game useage and I have not been able to track a way to change the use when in Windows mode.
Does someone perhaps know of a way to do this?
Also, can one make the F13 key the 'Print Now' button? That would help out immensely as well.
    Many thanks,
