'F11 key not working for reimaging hard drive on X201

Hello to all,
I I am having an issue with F11 key when booting up to engage in a recovery of factory partition of Windows 7 as it was shipped from factory, or as Lenovo calls it, Q drive. It is basically an image of Windows for reinstalling as was.
For some reason unknown to me, it will not work. I get no response.  Can anyone suggest a way to either get my F11 key to bring up the desired screens for a new image procedure, or any workarounds to this? I cannot access this through ThinkVantage either, which is a Lenovo help program. I have not reinstalled any new OS, nor have I reinstalled any previous versions of images of same OS. I have the x64 version.
I guess I could contact Lenovo and buy a new set of disks to do this, but it is too much money right now without trying something first.
I really need to reimage my laptop, as my Windows 7 pro has some serious issues that only a new installation (or new image in this case) will solve. Any and all answers will be greatly appreciated, and yes, the Q drive is showing up in Disk Management as around 6 or 7 GB, yet I have no idea of how to initiate this process at bootup.
Thanks in advance

Hi greg30,
it's possible that the F11 function has been corrupted, to check could you try the following please;  from a totally shut down state start the system and you should see a message stating "To interrupt normal start up........." do you see this message?
If you do see the message it should be telling you to press the blue ThinkVantage button which is at the rear left side of the keyboard.  When you press the button it should then offer you a menu with different options including F1 for BIOS, F12 for boot menu and F11 to recover system.  If when you press the blue ThinkVantage button does it offer you the F11 option?
Regarding creating recovery discs.  In Windows could  you take a look to see if you have the following or similar, (working from memory here),  hopefully similar to;  Start > Programs > Lenovo ThinkVantage (Tools / Technology) [or similar] > Create Recovery Media.
Using Acronis to clone the drive will only give you what you have; something may be missing from the boot sector if the above doesn't help.  It may be possible to repair the boot sector which could be tried if all of the above fails, but I confess to never having had to do so.

  • Why does installation cd not work for new hard drive for 2009 MacBook pro?

my hard drive died in my 2009 MacBook pro so I bought a 1tb ssd drive and had the store physically install the drive only.   I arrived home and stuck in the original installation disc and pressed and held the c key after the chime. Nothing happened. after a minute or so the screen turned black and rebooted up again with the chime.  It would continue to reboot whether I pressed the c key or not. when i pressed the d key it would say:
"Apple hardware test does not support this machine"
why why isn't this working like it is supposed to?

    Ryan,
Have you tried using the Startup Manager (holding down the option key) whilst booting? If everything works as it should, you should be given the option to choose the DVD to boot. Holding down the 'D' key should load the Apple Hardware Test.
    Good luck,

  • Screen not working after new hard drive installed

    Hi,
Can anyone help me, I just replaced my hard drive on my 15" G4 Aluminum Power Book as it had crashed and died on me. When I finished installing the new hard drive, when switching it on the screen remains blank. Does anyone have any Ideas why and how to get it working again. The screen was working before the hard drive crash. Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Here are the factory specs for your HP Pavilion dv6-1210sa Entertainment Notebook Computer. Based on the specs, the original hard drive was 250GB. This could be a factor in your issue. It could also be that the drive is an advanced format (AF) drive. Please provide the model of the drive for our review.

  • Boot disc not working on new hard drive

I have a Macbook Pro 5,5. My harddrive went bad and I replaced it with a new 500 HDD harddrive. When I put in my Mac OS X Install Disc 1 (Mac OS Version 10.4.10) and hold down the "C" key after the chime, all I get is the same white screen that initially starts up when I turn it on. The folder with a question mark doesnt show up (if I restart computer without install disc I will get the folder with question mark flashing however), and the disc drive will allow me to eject it fine if I restart and hold down the mouse, so I dont think it is the optical drive. Thoughts on whats going on?

    Solution:
    1. System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy
    2. Drag and drop or add your external hard drive in the Privacy window. This will reset the old preference.
    3. Then remove the external hard and close the System Preferences.
    4. Wait for 30 seconds. Spotlight will start indexing of your external hard drive.
Update: It's supposed to scan for 8 hours but it took only 15 minutes and stopped. I tested the search and it's still not working. It's strange that it works on my other two external hard drives (USB and Firewire) but not this particular one (USB). I have three external hard drives.

  • Recovery Disk wont work for new Hard drive.

I have a HP Pavilion dv5-2132dx with windows 7 64-bit. Recently a message started popping up warning that the hard drive might fail and I need to back up my data. I decided to buy a new hard drive. The hard drive a bought is 320GB SATA 7200RPM by western digital. It is the same brand and model as the hard drive currently in the computer. I popped in the new hard drive and inserted the recovery disks I bought from HP. The computer goes through the whole process of istalling the disks. However, on the final setup it shows the welcome screen. Then u hear a beep and then the screen goes black with a message saying that windows could not install and to try installing it again. I have done this 3 times and its always the same thing. Is this a Hard drive issue or a software issue and how can i get this to work?

    Hi,
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
Assuming that this is just a problem with the Recovery process, there is a straight forward work around.
Create a retail Windows 7 installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below ( this must be the exact version your notebook came with ) and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

  • System restore on DV6 not working after new hard drive installed (Vista 32-bit)

    Hi there,
I have a HP Pavilion Entertainment laptop (DV6 1210sa) and recently on start up I have been receiving a message saying that the hard drive is at imminent risk of failure. I therefore burned the restore CDs and bought a new hard drive: (A Toshiba 2.5 inch 80gb SATA hard drive 5400 RPM). The first part of the restore completes successfully then the HP screen appears after a restart and then goes to install windows, but before this begins I receive a message saying “Windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer.” I then have to restart and get the same message. Is this drive somehow incompatible? Is there something I’m missing?
    Thanks in advance

  • (Resolved) Windows 8 - Recovery Discs Do Not Work With New Hard Drive

    Update:
I decided to buy drive cloaning software.  I cloned my drive, that resolved the problem of installing the OS on the new drive.  Too bad neither HP's Restore disc's or this support fourm could help with this issue.
    Origional Post:
    Product Name:  HP Pavilion G4-2235DX
    Product Number:  C3Q50UAR#ABA
    BIOS:  Insyde F.26, 2/21/2013
    Processor: AMD A6-4400M APU w/ Radeon HD Graphics, 2700 Mhz, 2 Core(s)
    BIOS Mode:  UEFI
    SMBIOS Version:  2.7
    RAM:  12GB
    Operating System:  Windows 8 - 64bit (6.2.9200 Build 9200)
Situation:  I purchased this computer new as a refurbished model from a retail store.  I created system restore discs after initial setup using the HP Recovery Media Creation Utility.  This system has a 500 GB hard drive.  I purchased a Western Digital 1 TB hard drive to upgrade the drive in this notebook.  After swaping out the drives and trying to load the recovery onto the new 1TB hard drive in the same computer, an HP dialogue so states "This PC is not supported by the System Recovery Discs. You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these discs."  It gives a code (doesn't call it an error code) 0110-C3150UQ43#ABA underneath and only option is okay, the system reboots and follows the same pattern again and again.
I have upgraded drives in the past on Vista and 7 the same way using self created HP recovery discs with no issue, I do know what i'm doing.    I've seen discussion mentioning BIOS issues and other such problems.  I did try updating the BIOS to the one on the HP Support page (2013-03-01 , Version:F.26, 7.76M) and the recovery discs still will not work.  I found the CyberLink Recovery Discs Utility thread, however this solution/software has no support for Windows 8.  I have tried to run the utility and it fails, tried with compatiabity and it failed.  Why is this happening and what can be done to resolve this problem?
I tried using chat support but it won't let me get through to anyone, claiming my warranty is expired.  I just bought this computer 3 days ago and was assured a 90 day warranty.
    Please help, Thanks.

    Information on the warranty:
Refurbished computers are often erroneously marked as out of warranty, but it is simple to fix, and a phone representative could have corrected that for you. All computers' warranty start dates begin on the day they leave the factory. HP knows that there will be a period where the computer will sit on a shelf (for days or months) at the retailer. With refurbished computers, their 90-day warranties begin on the day they are refurbished. HP has no way of knowing what date the customer will buy the computer so the warranty start date stays the same until the customer registers the computer providing the date of purchase for the warranty system to be updated. If the registration process fails for some reason (rare, but it happens), phone technical support has a process they can initiate to have the warranty corrected. They only need a copy of the receipt showing the date of purchase.
I hope this information helps! Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks again for you post!

  • Recovery discs do not work with new hard drive

Hi I have come here desperately seeking help as I am not too knowledgeable with the workings of computers and I have spent an incredible amount of time just trying to get my laptop to some level of functionality.  I purchased a HP Envy and it had a corrupt hard drive which would not work from day one, laptop was new.  After a year of constant pressure on HP they finally decided to replace it and let me choose any laptop so I went with the Beats Envy 14 as it was the best one offered from the selection.  Low and behold the thing would not work properly from day one, again my brother who is much more of an expert said that there was definitely a hard drive issue so for the past 3 years I have put up with a computer that constantly crashes with BSOD, where I have lost data on numerous occasions (only so often I can back up), that I have had to constantly reset the thing using HP recovery discs, and that generally cannot cope when performing multiple tasks.   HP are most certainly shocking builds from my experience.  Then just last week the hard drive just craps itself and the laptop no longer will boot up.  I took it to a guy to get it at leYst working again so he has installed a new hard drive but with an old version of Windows 7.  I want to go back to the Windows version I was akin to on the HP recovery disk , and essentially have it all set up as before except for now having a workable hard drive however I get the message:  "This computer is not supported by the System Recovery Discs. You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these discs.Error: 0100 - 3385 - 3078" I also tried out of interest to load my old Windows 7 disc I had and XP but had no success.  Tried booting from startup etc and various things suggested on help forums.  Please tell me I am not stuck with this version of windows.  Whilst the discs included Windows 7 it was a totally different version, this home premium one is terrible. Any help/advice would be gratefully received. Thanks

no they were both 500gb. I read about that already, I heard about creating a partition for recovery etc but this is all a bit above me , as I said I am not very technical when it comes to the working of a computer.  These discs worked perfectly before but now with the new hard drive will not load at all.  I essentially hate the Windows Home Premium verions the guy who fixed it put on, whilst the discs had Windows 7 on them the icons were way smaller, the desktop neater, the buttons different, everything was a lot more modern and I was used to it.  This version looks like something from the 90s, have to constantly adjust size of Mozilla when browsing as it is huge.  I have my own version of Windows 7 on another disc but the hard drive will not let it load either........considering waiting for Windows 10 but again unsure if this new hard drive will even let that update Thanks

  • Recovery did not work with new hard drive

The original Toshiba HD(250G, sata1) of my laptop( ) crashed.
I bought new one (320G, sata 2, Western digit )
The problem is that, when I tried to use the recovery CD that I used to use it with old HD before, it did not work with this new HD well!?
After cd1 and cd2 finish installing it ask to take it out then restart, I do so, but when it comes to setup setting of windows.
An error message come out says " Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer’s hardware”
It restart and says again " Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on theis compuiter, restart the installation."
I have been trying to solve this a lot, but no way

  • Drivers and Software will not work on new hard drive

    Hello:
    Pavilion DV7-4270us
    Windows 7 64 bit
I installed new 500 GB hard drive into the above referenced notebook, as previously installed 640 GB hard drive from factory began to fail.
I have downloaded drivers and software for HP Media Smart, HP Simple Pass Fingerprint Reader, and HP Power Manager from HP Download page, and none of these work.
HP Support Assistant was downloaded and it works, however it says no updates needed.
Is this because I installed a hard drive not purchased from HP?
Thank you for any help you could provide.

No the laptop does not care where you bought the hard drive. Do you have any devices that are not working right in the Device Manager?

BUT I can't use the wireless key (FN+F8) anymore to switch between Bluetooth and the Wireless device. I can disable/enable them only from the control panel or the ConfigFree utility.
Any idea how to bring the FN key back to life?
    tnx.

    >I have just check a strange thing - when the WLAN switch is off, if I press the FN+F8 it >DOES respond and telling me that "Wireless communication is disabled, Please turn on >the wireless communication switch" all the other FN keys works.
Described issue is definitely not strange. It is logic that you can not switch between WLAN/BT if the hardware is disabled. This function is the same for years and the same happen on all older notebooks.
I have two notebooks and both with WLAN/BT and if the WLAN driver and BT stack are preinstalled properly there should not be any problems. If the WLAN switch is set to ON you should be able to use both devices. Check also options in ConfigFree

  • Spotlight search not working on external hard drive

    Hi all,
The spotlight search doesn't seem to be working on my external hard drive.
It is also not working as part of Time Machine, I cannot retreive anything via the spotlight search that has been backed on on the external drive.

and there is no issues with the external hard drive ( My book) ...  if I unplug the usb cable to the external hard drive and reboot the computer everything works but of course not the external hard drive because it is now unplugged ...... Help , I would like to keep the external hard drive plugged in all the time .....

The issue is the Canon camera not the brand of the external hard drive. Canon's implementation of the firewire prototcol seems particularly problematic. Acquiring another external hard drive from a different manufacturer is unlikely to fix the issue.
The reliable solution to your problem is to add a second firewire bus to your mac. Unfortunately only the G5 tower, MacPro or the MacBookPro come with the requisite slot to add a firewire card. Beyond the slot, the MacPro and G5 tower have the ability to add an additional internal drive which negates the need for an external drive for editing.
At this point you have three options from least to most expensive:
    1. capture to your system hard drive then move the files over to the external for editing.
    2. get a different camera/dv VTR to use as the capture device.
    3. get a MacPro or MacBookPro for your editing computer.
    Good luck.

  • Will this enclosure work for the hard drive on my G4 laptop.

I am looking for an enclosure that will all me to connect my G4 Laptop Hard drive...will this work?
    http://www.sourcingmap.com/brown-usb-sata-hdd-aluminum-external-hard-drive-enclo sure-case-p-18880.html

Pre-September 2003 Powerbook G4s without a PCMCIA slot will be limited to USB 1.1 speeds with this enclosure.
PCMCIA and Post September 2003 Powerbooks can use the hard drive with reasonable speed as USB 2 if there are no other USB 1.1 devices connected to the USB port. PCMCIA powered USB adapters exist that can be used for those Powerbooks with PCMCIA.
Neither series Powerbook will be able to boot Mac OS X from that enclosure. A Firewire enclosure would be needed to boot the the drive as an external drive, and know you have a reliable clone, if your purpose is to make a clone backup.
Note, you posted this question in the iBook G4 forum, yet your profile indicates you have a Powerbook G4. We can ask a moderator move your thread if your question is regarding Powerbooks.
