F13 Key

Hi all, I need to use the F13 key for an application, but clearly, the macbook pro has up to F12 only. Is there a way to be able to have the F13 somehow? Thanks a lot in advance mates. Bye
c4

On some keyboards, the keys, F13 through F24 are accessed using the Alt, Ctl or Shift key and an existing Fn key. I had to use this technique on an old mainframe keyboard.
For example, on some computers/systems, F13 will be Shift-F1, etc. It might be Alt-F1 or Ctl-F1 or some other key combination. You might try a few and see what happens.
No guarantee, just a thought based on my past experience.

  • Function Key F13

For years I've only used Shift/F13 for an Action in Photoshop (CS2) -- rotate 90 degrees anticlockwise. Today, F13, with or without Shift, suddenly takes a screenshot and puts .png files on my desktop. I have all Keystrokes switched off in System Prefs, and I've now even trashed Grab (I use Snapz Pro X or Screenflick anyway). I've repaired the Preferences, run TechTool Pro 4 over my discs, and restarted. Nothing makes any difference: F13 still takes a screenshot. What could make my iMac suddenly decide to do this?! BTW, I use a Logitech S530 cordless keyboard and mouse. I've added no new software, and haven't changed anything. NOTHING is set to use F13 apart from Photoshop. Can anyone help, please?

    @Dave -
Back to your original problem with your S 530 Mac Logitech Keyboard (and mouse combo - but I use a trackball and usually forget about that part) anyway....
I have primarily stuck with Tiger since the release of Leopard. Leopard has major issues. For everything good and new and innovative - there are just as many bad things with it. Otherwise Apple probably wouldn't have announced that Snow Leopard (10.6) is to be a Stability upgrade.
Anyway - I'm piping my 2 cents in as I have had the same problem recently.
I hvae had a primary install of Tiger with the Logitech S 530 Cordless White Mac Keyboard. It's a blast and I absolutely love the key response on it.
I also had a copy of Leopard running from an external FireWire Drive - mostly to check it out and wait for stuff to get Leopard compatible. Except that Leopard has proven to be problematic at best.
Was having this same exact problem on my FW Leo install. Except that I typically Map the Dashboard launch to F13. I was chalking the "forced Screenshot" up to yet more Leo issues. At this point I think it's a glitch in Logitech LCC software.
Recently my HD died inside my computer. Took it apart and upgraded the drive. Have spent the past week rebuilding and re-installing a fresh system of sorts.
This time out I decided to run Partitions - 'cause I still use Tiger for a few things and switching back and forth is no biggie. So I have Tiger on one Partition and Leo on a 2nd.
Runnin the latest 2.6 LCC for the S530 I think is the problem. After the OS install the first thing I always do is go thru and set User Prefs and settings throughout the OS. Then start installing 3rd party add-ons like LCC or Unsanity's Haxies or Growl etc... Well Dashboard via F13 was running just fine while I was tweaking and installing stuff. As I was jumping to it to monitor bandwidth and system processes via iStat Pro and also checking the weather for tomorrow.
The last thing I installed was LCC 2.6. Didn't think anything about it - went on doing other stuff and then needed to jump to Dashboard for 5 seconds. But no Dashboard - I hear a camera sound coming from my speakers. I try again and Screenshot after Screenshot ladning on the Desktop. I was doing a bunch of installs - not sure in what order - and decided to uninstall one at a time starting with LCC 2.6.
Then Test everything after each single uninstall. Sure enough - if I didn't regain accessing Dashboard via F13 as soon as I uninstalled LCC 2.6.
I went out to Logitech's website and dug around - not very organized and couldn not find the Product Page for the s530 within their site without going to Google and searching back into Logitech. Nobody specifically touched on the F13 Key issue - but Logitech posted that they are aware of issues pertaining to LCC and Leopard - even though they say that LCC v2.3.1 is compatible. Maybe it just barely functions. In between those 2 versions is 2.4. I dug around some more and found a copy of it and have installed it - but have yet to restart my computer to test if it works and maybe something Logitech tweaked in 2.6 broke.
I don't think this is a direct Apple problem - other than the fact that Apple tends to change and move things around within the OS from one version to the next Which tends to disrupt 3rd party add-ons. Then the 3rd parties have to go back and tweak their stuff to accommodate the new OS "design".
    I'll post something after I test v2.4.
PS if you uninstall the LCC you can use your keyboard just fine without it and like I said F-key mapping is regained. The Volume controls also work (up - down - mute). The Power Key works. Also the Play Controls (prev - next - play/ pause).
The Custom Mapped Keys don't work tho - Home - eMail - Spotlight - iTunes and iPhoto launch buttons.

  • Function keys F11 and higher not working as expected

Since I installed Leopard, my F11 through F15 keys act strange, the rest works OK. I use an external MS Comfort Curve keyboard with v6.2.1 (latest) of the Intellitype keyboard driver. I have switched off all keyboard shortcuts for function keys. I have set the System Preference to use the function keys as regular Function keys. Now the F11 is dead, the F12 is the eject, F13 through F15 are dead too. Switching the preference on or off only affects the F1 through F10 keys. There's no change for the F11 through F15 keys.
When I switch to Parallels 3 with Windows XP, the F11-key acts the same as the PrtScn (which is F13) key, the F12 key does nothing, F14 (ScrLk) and F15 (Pause/Break) are dead.
This IS annoying since I work on AS400 machines where you really need F11 and F12 + F23 (shift-F11) and F24 (shift-F12). Under Tiger, I did not have this problem - all settings worked as expected.

Software updates of all concerned programs ans OS's have resolved the issue.

  • Xmodmap F13 issue

    Hello.
I am trying to remap my Caps Lock key to F13 using xmodmap. About a year ago this was working flawlessly when I was using Ratpoison. My .Xmodmap looks like this:
    remove Lock = Caps_Lock
    keycode 66 = F13
With the above configuration, once my X session starts, two odd things, and one normal thing happen. First, what's normal is that Caps Lock is disabled. The odd things, are that my system "beeps" when F13 (what was Caps_Lock) is pressed, and when I'm in a terminal it creates a '~' symbol. In insert mode using GVim, it prints '<F13>'. I have set up a keybind in my Openbox rc.xml to test the functionality of my new F13 key, but it isn't working. I generated a file of my entire keymap using xmodmap, and F13 was not listed as being used by any other keycode on the system before I began. I tried the following:
    remove Lock = Caps_Lock
    keycode 66 =
and Caps Lock is disabled, and the key appears to do nothing (as intended.) Does anyone know what is up with my F13 key? I would like to use it as an 'escape' key for my Openbox keybindings.
Edit: Tried another way, with the same results as previously posted.
    clear Lock
    keysym Caps_Lock = F13

Your questions led me to the solution - change the charset of the terminal to Central European (ISO-8859-2). Thanks for them.
There's still a minor issue there: bash echoes my commands encoded:
    coub@archbang:~$ čč
    bash: $'\350\350': command not found
But I don't care about that, so that's solved for me.

  • Apple external keyboard function key missing?

Hi - I have the new aluminium external keyboard (UK english, wired, full size with numeric keypad) and I notice that it doesn't have a Fn modifier key.
I have configured OS X on my MBP to use F1, F2, etc as standard function keys, requiring me to hold down Fn + key on the MBP to adjust brightness, volume, etc.
But on the external keyboard, due to the lack of an Fn key, I cannot control brightness, volume, etc. Is there any key combination I should be using to get the same effect?

The FN key is just below the F13 key on the full keyboard.

  • Using external keyboard with MBP...

    just wondering...
where is the fn (function) key on a aluminum mac keyboard?

On the Apple Wireless Keyboard it's in the same place as on the MBP keyboard - bottom left. On the Apple Keyboard (USB) it's just below the F13 key (above the 'inverted-T' arrow keys).

  • Moving clips, simple question

    a novice question,
I've got over two hours of clips, transitions, etc., as my film, and I want to go through and edit a few more times...
is it possible to delete a clip and move everthing to the right of that clip over with one move? I know highlighting/shift will move chunks, but that might be a pain at some point.
    Thanks.

Haven't read that manual yet, have you?
Make a copy of your sequence. mark in and out points on something you want to remove. hit the little delete key under the f13 key. What does that do? It's called a ripple delete.

  • Can't find a keyboard shortcut in System Preferences...

I'd like to change the command-w shortcut to the F13 key but can't find command-w in the list of keyboard shortcuts. What am I doing wrong?

    In which Application?
Say it's the finder, 1st make sure F13 isn't used in Expose/Dashboard, then in KB & Mouse scroll down to Application Keyboard Shortcuts, choose Finder, hit the plus sign, tyope in Close Window, then hit the F13 key, exit, force quit the Finder or restart for it to take effect.

  • F2, F7, F8, F9, F10, F11, F12 resetting use in Windows XP

    Hey all,
I was just curious how one might change the Apple keyboard settings when in Windows XP.
I am a game designer and need to use F keys for in game useage and I have not been able to track a way to change the use when in Windows mode.
Does someone perhaps know of a way to do this?
Also, can one make the F13 key the 'Print Now' button? That would help out immensely as well.
    Many thanks,

  • Keyboard Shortcuts for Launching Programs

How can I assign a keyboard shortcut to launch a program? For instance, the F13 key to launch Pages, etc.?

    Maybe I'm missing the point.
probably. the hint work as follows. you pick an application you want to launch with a shortcut, say, Pages, as the OP wants. you make a service using automator that launches Pages. you make this service available in all applications so that you can launch Pages no matter what application is currently active. you then make a shortcut to this service in system preferences->keyboard->keyboard shortcuts. because you made the service available in all applications the shortcut will work in all applications, i.e. always.

  • Stopping clips from moving along the timeline.....

    Hiya
Doing quite well with FCE. One thing I haven't worked out is how to 'lock' things in the timeline. eg: if I delete something or change the length then everything else shifts along the timeline.
    Please help!

There are two types of DELETE in FCE/FCP: 'ripple' and 'lift.'
A lift delete can be performed using the {delete} key on a standard keyboard (aka as backspace delete). This is the key just below the F11 and F12 keys. A lift delete will delete the selected clip without causing the other clips on the Timeline to shift.
A ripple delete can be performed using the {del} key (aka forward delete). This key is two keys below the F13 key (above the left arrow key) on a standard keyboard. The ripple delete will delete the selected clip and shift clips other clips on the Timeline to fill the gap.

  • New aluminum keyboard - Remap volume & player keys to F13 - F19?

(I couldn't see a 'Keyboards' or 'Other Hardware' section of the forum so thought I'd post here).
I've just bought the new aluminium keyboard. I'm loving it apart from the placement of the volume keys, iTunes/QuickTime control keys etc. I want to remap them to the F13 through to F19 keys.
Also I'd like to remove/disable the brightness controls from F1 & F2 (can't think why they thought of placing them there?)
    How would I do this?

    Also I'd like to remove/disable the brightness controls from F1 & F2
After you install the keyboard software

go to the "Keyboard Shortcuts" tab of "Keyboard & Mouse" system preference, scroll down to "Display" (near the bottom), and uncheck it.
