HELP!!!
When I go to print something, the printer acts ok but the page comes out blank. I have it set to "black ink only". My color cartridge is shown as empty. My black cartridge is full & new. I would have thought that setting it to black ink only" would avoid having to buy a color cartridge which I don't use??? Perhaps the color cartridge empty light doesn't allow it to display print? Help!

Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having some printing issues.
Just so you know, when the printer runs out of colour or black ink, that empty cartridge will need to be replaced before the unit will print.
What happens is that the printer will use the colour ink to make black ink if the printer is running a little low. This happens so that you can finnish print jobs and so that the ink delivery system does NOT dry out and cause damage to the printer.

Print spooler crashes whenever I try to print to Deskjet F4280 over the network.

I have a nice and cheap F4280 connected to my computer via USB. My computer is running Windows XP SP3 (downgraded from Vista, had the same problem with Vista as well). I can print fine from my printer, but whenever I try to print from a laptop over the wireless network, the print spooler on my computer crashes and the F4280 doesn't do anything.
I downloaded a Microsoft tool to restart the print spooler, but when I resend the document to the printer over the netword, the spooler drashes again.
I've downloaded all the latest drivers, and attempted to run the critical patch, but an error message said I was already up to date and didn't need to install it.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Resolution/Fix:
You first need to clear out your print queue to prevent the print spooler from crashing again.
On the computer designated as the server do the following:
Stop the printer spool service by right clicking on your My Computer icon and selecting "Manage"
Expand "Services and Applications" and the click on services
Browse through the list of services and find "Printer Spooler".
Right click on the "Print Spooler" service and select "Stop" if Stop is grayed out or disabled and "Start" is an available option, then the service is already stopped.
Go to the c:\Windows\System32\Spool\Printers folder
You should see some files in this directory with a .SHD file extension or a .SPL extension you will want to delete these. In some cases you may see other files in this directory as well, and in general it is safe to delete them. Files besides the .SHD and .SPL should be backed up before you delete them to be safe.
You may either reboot the computer or Start the "Print Spooler" service manually.
Once your print spool is clear you can now proceed with the following on the server computer:
Click on Start then control panel, and then Printer and Faxes
Right click on the HP Deskjet F4280 printer and select Properties
Click on the Advanced tab
Uncheck "Enable advanced printing features"
Click the OK button
You should now be able to print fine from any computer on the network

Can't print to shared Deskjet F4280

Can anyone help with this one?
Have an HP Deskjet F4280 connected to my Ultimate Vista 64 bit box via USB. Prints great.
Attempted to share on my home D-link wireless network.
Activated “shared printer” on the main box that is connected to the printer.
Linked to printer on second computer (also Ultimate Vista 64 bit) through “Add a printer”
Successfully printed a test page.
Tried to print from second computer on a variety of applications (ie notepad, word, etc) and nothing printed. Jobs disappeared into thin air.
Tried turning all knobs and pushing all buttons in printing preferences and nothing changed the outcome. Any ideas of suggestions?

OK.......After about 6 hours of effort into this one I have it resolved. BTW, HP customer support was worthless. They said the product can not be networked and suggested I return it.
Here's what fixed the issue.
1. Directly connected the printer to the second computer and installed the drivers from from the installation CD. Note that I did not install any other software (eg HP essentials, OCR etc.)
2. Reconnected the printer to the main box, making sure it still was identified as "shared".
3. "Added Printer" on second computer (network, not local). Successfully connected to HP F4200 series. Set this as the default printer.
4. Print a test page failed!
5. Successfully printed documents from word, excell, notepad and browser.
6. Note that I did not delete the non-default F4200 printer that was directly connected to the second computer.

F4280 wireless printing windows 7 64-bit, not showing printer in "devices and printers"

I am a little confused. Today I installed windows 7 64-bit on my acer 9423wsmi notebook. I installed my hp f4280 via a usb cable. It prints and scans. Now I try to install my wireless kit (came with the printer) which worked fine an vista 32-bit sp1. I looked up every driver etc. on hp.com and found the install guide for windows 7. Everything went as described and printing works even without the pc adapter. You might say what is the problem. Well I noticed the wireless (copy) isn't listed under "devices and printers". I found this a bit strange. I tried to install a printer via the windows wizard. But using the network option gives me the shared copy. And using a the usb02 virtual port to which the printer is connect yields the same result: a fully working printer but nowhere to be found in "devices and printers". I searched the internet for a solution but my search results get cluttered with support for the installation.
My questions:
Is this normal on this system with these settings?
Is there a way to let the printer appear in "devices and printers"?

Hi Flash,
I still haven't fixed the problem. I assume you found this installation guide. If I follow this I still can't see the printer in "device and printers". But when I open a document (notepad, word) I can see the printer listed in the printer dialog. So I am able to print. Printer properties are a bit hard to reach but it works. I am still hoping some wizz kid from hp to come up with a solution . Keep me posted if you know something more.

10.4.11 and HP F4280 Printer Failure

PLEASE HELP!
I just had my Powermac 10.3.9 upgraded to a 10.4.11 and my HP F4280 printer won't print now as it used to. It shows that it's printing but nothing happens. It also displays that the documents "were" printed, even though they weren't. I tried to re-install the HP 4300 series software but this didn't help whatsoever. One thing I did notice is that the printer icon that shows up on my dock while printing looks nothing like my printer. Before we upgraded the computer, the icon looked identical. Is the computer selecting a printer that I don't have? This would explain why it "thinks" the documents were printed... But if that were the case, these documents wouldn't be on the same list as the ones that were printed before we upgraded the computer, right? And they are on the same list. Still it's odd that the icon looks different than it used to look and nothing like my printer as it used to. Scanning works by the way. It also displays my ink levels - so it's not a connection problem. It's driving me nuts! Please help!

Hi slice4444, and a warm welcome to the forums!
In Printer setup Utility, remove the instance of thatPrinter with the little - icon.
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go.
Try adding the Printer again. If that doesn't work...

How do i edit a scanned document on a Deskjet F4280?

All my scans end up in HP Photo and i cannot edit documents there. Can anyone tell me how to save my document scans so i can edit them?

As to saving scans so that you can edit them. What type of scan are you doing? (picture or text document) What type of edits are you attempting?

F4280 Photo Printing off edge

F4280 with WIndows 7. Trying to print 4x6 photo to HP advanced photo paper, 4x6 with tab. Unable to print correctly using windows, picassa or HP photosmart. Photo appropriately cropped to 4x6 size. Printer set to 4x6 with tab. Paper put in with tab at trailing end as per arrows on printer. Photo prints with half inch of photo cut off on leading (non-tabbed) end, and half inch blank on tabbed end. Does not matter whether I check off 4x6 or full page. Ideas?

Unless the Photo Company has an app for iOS devices, you can't from the iPad.
If the photos were captured by the iPad or imported from a digital camera with the iPad Camera Connection Kit, you can import the photos from the iPad with your computer as with any other digital camera and send the photos from your computer.

Deskjet F4280 - Prints a cartridge Alignment Page every few minutes

My F4280 has decided to printe cartridge alignment pages every time I turn it on or randomly as it just sits there. When I put the alignment page and hit resume (as it tells me to do) it goes throught some internal movement, then sits there for awhile, THEN prints out another chartridge alignment page. Tried reloading software, but problem still them.

this should help. When another page comes out of the printer, first disconnect it from the computer and then place the page on the scanner and hit resume. After its done reboot the printer to see if it will still print a page. If it keeps doing it check the quality of the page. there must be black on it and at least 1 color. not counting the color in the picture of the printer.

Sharing of an HP F4280 All-in-one

Not totally sure if it's an HP issue or a Mac OS trick I don't know about, but here is the situation:
I have an HP F4280 fully configured (i.e. all functions working perfectly) connected to an iMac via USB (this printer isn't networkable). I shared the printer and access it on my network from my MacBook... The printing works fine, but no copying or scanning: the HP setup program running from the MacBook won't find the printer and therefore won't configure it as a scanner copier... The MacBook finds it, and recognizes it as the proper model...
I tried to connect the printer directly to the MacBook to configure it once, then hook it back up to the iMac, but that isn't working... Has anyone managed to do this successfully?

While I don't have the HP all-in-one I do have a Xerox. In sharing this it can be connected to either computer and used for printing through the Airport Express network provided both computers are switched on. However it can't apparently be used through the network for scanning. This seems to be a limitation of usb networking and of the Airport Express capability. I think (from reading the specs) that other functions might be available to other machines if the all-in-one was connected through an Airport Extreme base station but I'm not sure of this. Likewise connection on an ethernet LAN ought to provide all functions to networked computers but my all-in-one doesn't have ethernet options.
I'm no expert on networking!

F4280 Print Alignment Issues on Business Card Card Stock

I have a Deskjet F4280 All-in-One series printer. Two weeks ago I printed 250 business cards (front and back) on the printer and everything aligned perfectly. Today I've gone through page after page trying to print again and every time I print a page, the alignment is different! It seems to work properly on regular paper but when trying to print on the same exact card stock I used two weeks ago, every page starts in a different place and / or is skewed on the page. Any suggestions?

My HP Deskjet F4280 printer won't work with my new HP 2000 laptop w/ windows 8.1

I have a HP Deskjet F4280 printer. I recently bought a HP 2000 laptop. I put the printers install disk in the laptop to set up my printer but it says windows 8 doesn't support that printer! It also does say that windows 2000, XP, Vista are supported on the disk for the printer...help! Is there a work around?

Since the installation disk does not support Windows 8.1, I would suggest trying to download, and install the drivers directly from the HP Support website. I have included a link to the 'HP Deskjet F4200/F4224 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Driver'. Once the software is downloaded, open the software, and follow through the on screen instructions for installation.
Please let me know the outcome of installing the software.

HP Deskjet F4280 prints blank pages on Macbook

Hello,
My printer came with a macbook I bought in 2008 and worked wonderfully for years. Out of nowhere it stopped printing or making copies. The printer acts like it is doing the action but the pages come out blank or with spotty black marks where text should have appeared. I have a newer macbook now that runs OS X 10.10 and the printer shows up under my USB and in the printer & scanners. I'd appreciate any ideas on what to try. Thanks.

I read your post about your Deskjet F4280 showing some print quality problems when making print outs or copies. The spotty black marks could be a sign of a printhead problem.
Please try these steps to see if the issue can be resolved: Faded, Missing, or Dull Colors in Printouts
If the troubleshooting does not help at all, I would lastly suggest technical support.

F4280 driver for windows 7

I just bought a deskjet f4280. after i inserted the DVD enclosed and tried to download and to install, the screen said it isn't compatible.
I got on the www.hp.com/go/windows7 but still did not find the correct driver software.
Where can I find this driver software? please!

Try this:
Insert the setup disk in your CD/DVD drive. Choose to view the files in Explorer. Scroll down to the file "Setup," which is identified as an application.
Right-click the file and select "Properties." Click the "Compatibility" tab at the top of the resulting window.
Check off "Run this program in compatability mode for:" and choose "Windows Vista" from the pop-up menu.
ALSO check "Run this program as administrator" at the bottom of the window.
Press "Apply," then "OK."
Now you can double-click the "Setup" file and run the software installer.

Without more information, I would be guessing.
The cause could be your printer settings, the driver, and so on.....
Did you buy the printer at the same time? If so, I would contact the store for assistance (hopefully an Apple store).

HP Desktop Jet F4280 not scanning

hey guys, this isn't actually my all-in-one, its my dads but i am trying to help him fix it. First i will give you my dads computer information.
- HP Desktop Jet F4280
-Windows Vista (not sure if its home or whatever)
-Norton 2009
- He uses HP solution Center
Now my problem is that, he can scan, if he's lucky, parts of the pictures if it lets him, but almost all the time it actually stops before i could do anything, he told me that it worked fine before (not exactly sure how long before was) but now he can't even use the thing. he can make copies, print etc etc, he just cant scan. What ive tried to do is, turn off the firewall, turn off norton, and still a no go. When i push the scan button, the "scan window" would just freeze up and when i click it it would say "HP Cue Scan Flow Not Responding". Another error i get is a screen shot and it happens most of the time so it actually stops the scanner from scanning.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated for i am stuck, thanks.

mine is scanning but flickering in the tabs when you go to edit and freezes up for awhile before you can actually finish it. I am not getting any error messages but i noticed that the scanned image is slanted but after you have saved it and I go back in it seems fine. I believe there is an issue in the solution center. My documents seem fine, its just scanning the photos. Have you tried to just hit the scan button on the actual printer itself instead of just going through the solution center?

HP F4280 - Eats my ink I think!

I have an HP f4280 Inkjet all-in-one printer. I think it eats the ink for lunch. It is supposed to be rated at 200 pages for black and 160 for color.... however, I may get 100 (if I am lucky for black) and 50 for color. Is there an issue with this printer?

I understand that you are getting software errors when trying to open the software on your ENVY computer for the Officejet J6480.
You could try using the Printer Install Wizard on the ENVY computer, this will link up with the printer via the network connection and attempt to download and install the software.
