Fabric Interconnect and storage solutions

Dear
Please I would like to clarify a question, is that a solution of storage, such as EMC VNX5300 can be connected directly to a Fabric Interconnect, but would lose functionality when connected to a Nexus 5000 switch. I would like someone to clarify this doubt indicating that functionality is lost when direct connection would be advisable to FI or the Nexus.
Regards

In versions of UCS earlier than 2.1, you had the  option to useDirect Attached Storage DAS with UCS. However, you needed a SAN switch connected  to the FI so the switch could push the zone database to the FI. That is,  the UCS platform was not able to build a zone database
With the release of Version 2.1, UCS now has the  ability to build its own zone database. You can have DAS with UCS  without the need for a SAN switch to push the zoning configuration
hope this helps

  • Port-channel L2 problem with Fabric Interconnect and Nexus 7010

    Hi,
i using port-channel from both fabric interconnect to N7k with 3 cables per Fabric Interconnect.
but, my problem is when i creating port-channel, Fabric Interconnect don't support mode ON dan rate-mode share in Interface 10G Nexus 7010.
    I was trying :
    1. I using non dedicated port in Nexus 7010.
          - rate-mode share
          - channel-group 1 mode active
          - switchport mode trunk
when i using this option, the port-channel in Nexus 7010 was suspended
    2. I using non dedicated port in Nexus 7010
         - rate-mode share
         - channel group 1 mode on
         - switchport mode trunk
when i using this option, the port-channel in Nexus 7010 was came up, but in Fabric interconnect was failed.
    3. I using dedicated port in Nexus 7010
         - rate-mode share
         - channel group 1 mode active
         - switchport mode trunk
when i using this option, the port-channel in Nexus 7010 was suspended
    4. I using dedicated port in Nexus 7010
         - rate-mode dedicated
         - channel group 1 mode active
         - switchport mode trunk
when i using this option, the port-channel in Nexus 7010 was came up and running well.
but, the problem is my costumer do not want using a dedicated rate-mode. if i using dedicated mode the only available port is 8 interfaces instead of 32 ports. i want to using rate-mode share in nexus 7010.
is there any way to configuring port-channel using mode on in fabric interconnect ? i was trying using CLI to create port-channel in Fabric interconect but i cannot configure the channel group protocol.
i attach the topology of N7K with Fabric interconnect.
    regards,
    Berwin H

    Hi Manish,
the issue was solved, i was fix it last week.
    the solution is:
i enable the license grace-priode (since my license is Enterprise so cannot create VDC) then i create a VDC (ex: VDC 2)  so i allocate the interface on all module

N7K-M132XP-12 to VDC 2. after that i delete VDC 2 then all interface back to VDC 1 (default vdc). then i enable the rate-mode share in dedicated port and bundle into port-channel and its working.
i dont know why it must move to VDC first then it will working, maybe cisco can explain the reasons.

  • Oracle hardware and storage solution configuration questions

    Hi all,
I am configuring hardware and the storage solution for a project and am hoping to have some questions answered about using Oracle as the storage solution.
The current setup will have 2 Dell NX3100 NAS gateways each with dual quad core processors, 24GB of RAM, 12x2TB data disks, and running Windows Storage Server 2008 64bit as the OS.
Will also have direct attached storage of 2 Dell PowerVault MD1200 disk arrays, each disk array with 12 x 2Terabyte SAS disk drives giving a total of 36TB of storage space for each NAS Gateway.
Based on this information, is there any problem with two Oracle Standard Edition installation (1 per NAS) holding up to 36TB of data (mostly high res images) in this hardware configuration?
Does Oracle have a built in solution for replicating data between the 2 NAS heads and down to the disk arrays? Where the application sever will write to one of the NAS+disk arrays and then that data is written from the first NAS to the 2nd NAS+disk array? Currently I've used DoubleTake in other projects but am wondering if Oracle has something similar that is built in.
Finally, will Backup Exec Oracle agent work with this configuration for backing up the data to a Dell PowerVault ML6020 Tape backup device?
Thanks in advance for any insight.

  • Two Fabric redundancy and storage flapping

    Hello!
I have a fairly new Nexus 5548 implementation, using the Nexus for stricly storage. I have two 5548s for two different Fabrics, for redundancy. They are two seperate fabrics, and the Nexus are not stacked so they are managed individually. When I have both Nexus online my VMware side starts flapping, and loosing storage which causes my ESXi hosts to lock up and VMs to go unresponsive. This does not happen 100% of the time, but it happens intermitentaly and sometimes is catestrophic to datacenter services. When I shut down one of the Nexus switches, storage comes back and everything is healthy.
All hosts are connected via 4GB FC (supposedly HP cant do 8GB without problems)
5/6 of my hosts are on HP c7000 enclosures via 10gb FlexFabric switches, the rest via UCS
Netapp clustered pair is the target. When the ESXi hosts loose storage, they are still flogi'd in to the storage and fabric
ESXi 5.0 w/newest (and correct) drivers. VMWare tech support sees no problems, other than the "storage is getting pulled from the host"
Newest firmware on everything HP & UCS
    Nexus running 5.0(3)N2(2a)
    Using per-iniator zoning
Fabric-A and Fabric-B are different VSANs
Any ideas? Do I have a design flaw in my fabric? HP, Cisco, Netapp, and VMware all pretty much have no clue. So this forum is a shot in the dark. Thanks for ANY ideas you guys can provide

could it be some kind of trespassing on the storage array ? LUNs start balancing between the controllers and eventually the host times out. Have you tried different failover (NMP) policy in ESXi ?

  • Port-channel Problem between Fabric Interconnect and N7K vPC

    Dear all,
I have a problem with Port-channel Uplink between Fabric Interconnect with N7K using vPC
This is my network topology for UCS Deployment
In N7K I has configured vPC for red link and green link, at Fabric Interconnect A I has configured Port-Channel with member is Port 1 and Port 2, uplink is red link. At Fabric Interconnect B, I has configured Port-Channel with member is Port 1 and Port 2, uplink is green link.
The show interface port-channel on N7K is good, every port-channel is up and have all member. But At Fabric Interconnnect, when I see on UCS Manager, the status of Port-Channel on Fabic A and Fabric B is fault with Additional Info: No operational member. Although all link is link up and I has status of Port-Channel is enable on UCS Manager. When I see the Properties of Port 1, Port 2 on Port-channel, I see the membership status is : individual. This mean port-channel is not up and no membership in this configuration. I want to using port-channel for load balance and plus more bandwidth for uplink to 20Gig. I don't understand why ?
Please help me resolve this problem, I has send the capture screen of UCS Manager when I show status of Port-channel and Port-member in port-channel in attach items.
Anyone can help me to resolve this, thanks you very much. Please reference attach items for more detail about fault.
    Thanks,
    Trung.

    Thanks Matthew very much,
I has resolved this problem. The reason of problem is miss match protocol of port-channel between N7K and Fabric Interconnect. The Fabric Interconnect always use LACP protocol, but N7K using Port-channel mode on, that why the port-channel failed. I has configured LACP for port-channel in N7K, it has resolved the problems.
    Thanks,
    Trung.

  • Fabric interconnect and Native Vlan

    Hi
I just want to ask a simple question
is there any precautions with native vlan between the Switched infrastructure and the Fabric interconnect ?!
I mean can I use any vlan as a native vlan ex.999 "anything but not 1" ?!

As a security best practice on trunks carrying multiple VLANs you should not allow the native vlan on the line.  When you have a single VLAN going to a device, an end node for example, the port should be configured as an access port with a single data VLAN, and potentially a voice vlan if that will be used.
For example, our N5Ks have a trunk to each of our UCS interconnects.  We set the native VLAN on the n5k side to 999. 999 is not in the allowed list for the trunk then, so the native VLAN never makes it to the ucs.  On the ucs then, any server that can handle VLANs (esxi for example) we send only tagged VLANs -- no VLAN is marked native, thus accomplishing the same thing as we did for the n5k to FI link.
It is recommended to not leave your native VLAN as 1 as best practice.  It's less of a concern if the native VLAN isn't in the allowed list, but to avoid mis configuration issues you should set it to another VLAN.

  • Changing fabric interconnect and cluster ip/sm/gw

I need to change the ip address/sm/gw of bnoth FI and the cluster but when I try to commit buffer
    it keeps telling me this

It is most likely easier to do this with GUI: Admin ===> Management Interface

  • Rebooting fabric interconnect and mac addresses

I rebooted the subordinate and noticed that I lose only one ping on a vm and saw that mac address show up in the primary.
After the subordinate came back online, I did a show mac address table on the subordinate and noticed that a bunch of mac addresses showed back on the subordinate.
how does ucs know what mac address to use for the subordinate  or primary when the subordinate comes back online?
the vm that i was pinging was initially on subordinate but after the reboot, it was on the primary.
but other mac addresses are already showing on the subordinate right after the reboot

  • Connecting Fabric Interconnect with MDS

    Dear Team,
Kindly share how to configure connectivity between Fabric Interconnect and MDS
what are the steps to be followed in establishing a successful connection between FI and MDS
We have a tape library from IBM and trying to connect the same to FI via MDS and want this Tape library to be detected on the guest VM running windows 2008 on Esxi( Service profile with 2 vhba already added),we are trying using Fibre connectivity.
Also please advice in which mode should we keep the FI (FC switching, end host etc)
    Thanks and Regards
    Jose

    Hi Jose,
The common steps to configure FC on FI and MDS as following :
    1. FI configured in NPV mode, ensure that all FC uplinks and vHBA of Blades have been assigned on correct VSAN
Verify if vHBA Flogi into the FI
        show npv flogi-table
        show npv status
    Example
    FI-A(nxos)# sh npv flogi-table
    SERVER                                                                  EXTERNAL
INTERFACE VSAN FCID             PORT NAME               NODE NAME       INTERFACE
    vfc703    10   0x330001 20:00:00:cc:1e:dc:01:0a 20:00:00:25:b5:00:00:03 San-po102
    vfc711    10   0x330002 20:00:00:cc:1e:dc:02:0a 20:00:00:25:b5:00:00:02 San-po102
Total number of flogi = 2.
    FI-A(nxos)# sh npv status
    npiv is enabled
    disruptive load balancing is disabled
    External Interfaces:
    ====================
      Interface: san-port-channel 102, State: Up
VSAN:   10, State: Up, FCID: 0x330000
      Number of External Interfaces: 1
    Server Interfaces:
    ==================
Interface: vfc703, VSAN:   10, State: Up
Interface: vfc711, VSAN:   10, State: Up
      Number of Server Interfaces: 2
    2. Enable NPIV mode on MDS, configure the link to FI as F port. Assign this port into correct VSAN
FI will become Node proxy, so verify if all vHBA have been detect on Upstream NPIV switch
    SW2(config)# sh npiv status
    NPIV is enabled
    SW2(config)# sh flogi database
INTERFACE        VSAN    FCID           PORT NAME               NODE NAME
    San-po102        10    0x330000  24:66:00:2a:6a:05:e9:00 20:0a:00:2a:6a:05:e9:01
    San-po102        10    0x330001  20:00:00:cc:1e:dc:01:0a 20:00:00:25:b5:00:00:03
                               [BLADE1-SAN-A]
    San-po102        10    0x330002  20:00:00:cc:1e:dc:02:0a 20:00:00:25:b5:00:00:02
                               [BLADE2-SAN-A]
    3. Configure zoning on the MDS (to make sure whether the issue on zoning or not, you can configure the default zone to permit)
    Example : zone default-zone permit vsan 1
Verify the zoning on Upstream NPIV switch
SW2(config)# SH ZONESet active vsan 10
    zoneset name ZONESET-VSAN10 vsan 10
      zone name INE-VSAN10 vsan 10
      * fcid 0x330001 [device-alias BLADE1-SAN-A]
      * fcid 0x330002 [device-alias BLADE2-SAN-A]
      * fcid 0x2a0000 [device-alias FC-SAN10]
    4. Ensure that vHBA of BLADE had been discovered on the storage device. Configure LUN masking on the storage
I really don't have enough knowledge of VMware hahaha.....so can't help for troubleshooting the VM....Really sorry
    Thanks,
    Gofi

    show-tech file uploaded.

    Padma,
    TAC Engineer sent below mail
    Hi Amit,
I’ve checked through the show tech you’ve uploaded and have not found any indicators of errors for the error message you are seeing.
As I mentioned in the call, the error is a transient error from which the fabric interconnects can automatically recover from. The recommended action is to wait for a few (10-15min) to see if the error clears automatically. If the error does not clear then we will need to do further troubleshooting. This error on its own is not a cause for worry. As you have HA in your system the management services would have failed over the to the other fabric interconnect and would not affect your system performance.
We can leave the system under observation for a few days to see if other errors occur concurrently with this error.
I will upload show-tech logs here, find my reply below
Is the alert generated only for FI B or both FIs ->> Amit: Alert generated for FI-B only
Any change in cluster state corresponding to alert time stamp ->> Amit: Unfortunately when this error generating we are unable to see the cluster state because of timing. If you can guide / suggest from any other location I can find the state that will be helpful
Cluster physical link status ->> Amit: Cluster link is OK
Does FI have any core dumps ->> Amit: I don't have any idea about this. How can check this ?

  • UCS-Fabric Interconnect Replacement

    Hello everybody,
I have a UCS domain with a failed Fabric Interconnect and i have to replace this Fabric. For me there is no action to do in the configuration of the new FI i just have to add it in the existing domain and give it the IP address, but i have a question about the firmware version. is the firmware automatically installing in the new Fabric or have i to install it manually ? the firmware version in my domain is 2.2(1b).
    Thanks for the answer
    Best Regards
    François Fiocre

    Hi Claudio
    I assume you talk about 10G copper, not 1G copper;
    and if 10G: CX-4 (Twinax) cables, or 10G Base-T ?
There is a 12-port 10GBASE-T module, but this is only supported on the Nexus 5596T so of no use on Nexus 5596UP switch, nor UCS FI.
Anyway, it is a not recommended to connect UCS FI Uplinks to a Nexus 22xx ? just think about the oversubscription ! you would like to have as much bandwidth Northbound as possible.

  • FAS3220 and FAS2240 direct attach on fabric interconnect 6296UP

    Hello everybody
    I have the following architecture
    1 Cisco Catalyst 6509-E
    1 Cisco Catalyst 3560-x
    2 Fabric Interconnect 6296UP
    1 FAS 3220 (principal storage)
    1 FAS2240 (vault backup)
    1 chasis cisco UCS 5108
5 blade servers Cisco UCS B200M3
    Firmware version: 2.2(3c)
Fabric Interconnect are direct attach on fabric interconnect 6296up and the ports are configurated as FC storage ports
    My question is the following:
Can I zoning fabric interconnect with FAS3220 and FAS2240?
Can I present LUNS of FAS2240 and FAS3220 at the same time on the same boot policy, same san boot policy, and the same organization?
    Thanks for your help

Well, even if that was possible. You're accounting for a critical failure - i.e. a failure of two redundant devices (both 3220s, which I would have assume would be running in a cluster ... or 7mode).
While just upstream you have a single cat 6500 - which would be a single point of failure.
Logic would dictate to account for a single device failure all across the path before looking into multi-device failure.

  • Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/
Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

  • Physical Connectivity from Fabric Interconnect to MDS and Failover please suggest

    Dear Team
We have 2 FI and 2 MDS 1 SAN
    Currenlty the connectivity is
2 direct physical connections from FI-A to MDS1
2 direct physical Connections from FI-B to MDS2
From MDS 1 connection to SAN Primary controller
From MDS 1 connection to SAN Secondary controller
From MDS 2 connection to SAN primary controller
From MDS 2 connection to SAN Secondary controller
Hope the above connectivty is fine?
    we had looked at
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/ps4159/ps6409/ps5990/white_paper_c11_586100.html (as team always preferred to go via cisco standards)
In FI we have to cluster the FI and Primary and Subordinate, likewise here for MDS to we need to? or will it be done via FIs ?
If not these 2 MDs they work independent but sharing the configs that happens among them?
Now what ever changes (Zone Creation)we make on MDS1 hope that will get relpicated to MDS2 via FIs?
If MDS1 Fails will all the configuration be available on MDS2 and still the infra will be smooth running ? and vice versa?
Any additional steps to be done to achieve it?
Which is the best way to achieve it please suggest
    Thanks and Regards
    Jose

    Hi Jose.
    Physically your connectivity is good.
On the UCS side, the 'Primary' and 'Subordinate' role refer only to the Management of the system and which device is actually running UCS Manager.
Each MDS device will have separate configuration (zoning).  It's different between the 2 devices.
The blade itself will have a connection out each side, or 'SAN Fabric'.
    e.g.
               +----+
           +---+    +-----+
           |   |    |     |
           |   |    |     |
           |   |SAN |     |
           | +->----<--+  |
           | |         |  |
           | |         |  |
       +---+-+-+    +--+--+--+
       |       |    |        |
       |MDS-A  |    |MDS-B   |
       +--^-^--+    +---^-^--+
          | |           | |
       +--+-+--+    +---+-+--+
       |       |    |        |
       |UCS-A  |    | UCS-B  |
       +--+----+    +-----+--+
          |               |
          |               |
    VSAN100    +-----+    | VSAN200
          |    |     |    |
          +---->     <----+
               |Blade|
               +-----+
The blade will have a HBA on FabricA (VSAN100) and FabricB (VSAN200)
Each HBA will have a different WWPN, and on the SAN array, each controller will have a WWPN
So on MDS-A, the zoning will be:
    Blade WWPN A
    Storage WWPN Primary A
    Storage WWPN Secondary A
    MDS-B, the zoning will be:
    Blade WWPN B
    Storage WWPN Primary B
    Storage WWPN Secondary B
So the configuration is *not* synced between the two MDS devices, but they each have visibility to the blades vHBA device.  At the blade level, the Multipathing software on the Operating System will handle any failover.
On the UCS, we would generally use a Port Channel up to the MDS.

  • No link between IOM port 2/2/3 and fabric interconnect B

    Hello
I am trying to remove an uplink from an IOM to the fabric interconnect as its not required.  I have tried to reset the I/O module and re-acknowledge the chassis with no luck, it is still shown in the GUI with the error message as in the subject.  We are currently running 2.0(1s).  The kit isn't in production yet.
    Thanks for any help

Yes i agress thats a pretty heavy approach to clean it. No if you left it there as it is, there would have been no operational issues. It would have just left this fault in the UCSM.
